The accurate ab-initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab-initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single particle spectral function of the two correlated $d$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab-initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the non-local screening physics of these materials. We derive the method, discuss aspects of the embedding and choices of physically important orbitals, and compare our results to x-ray and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as bremsstrahlung-isochromat spectroscopy.
The possibility of magnetic-order induced phonon anisotropy in single crystals of MnO and NiO is investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. Below Tn both compounds exhibit a splitting in their transverse optical phonon spectra of approximately 10%. This behavior illustrates that, contrary to general assumption, the dynamic properties of MnO and NiO are substantially non-cubic.
In contrary to authors of Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 126406 (2004) claiming "the band picture to be a reasonable starting point for the description of the electronic structure of NiO, much better than the ligand-field picture", we argue that the many-electron CEF approach is physically adequate starting point for discussion of the electronic structure and magnetism of NiO.
The valence band electronic structure of Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ has been investigated across its paramagnetic metallic (PMM) - ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) - antiferromagnetic insulator (AFMI) transition. Using surface sensitive high resolution photoemission we have conclusively demonstrated the presence of a pseudogap of magnitude 80 meV in the near Fermi level electronic spectrum in the PMM and FMM phases and finite intensity at the Fermi level in the charge ordering (CO)-AFMI phase. The pseudogap behavior is explained in terms of the strong electron-phonon interaction and the formation…
We claim that any approach neglecting the spin-orbit coupling and the orbital magnetism is not physically adequate for 3d oxides, including NiO, and that in reaching "excellent agreement" in a Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 126406 (2004) paper too small experimental value of 1.9 muB has been taken for the Ni magnetic moment despite publication of a new experimental value of 2.2 muB, at 300 K yielding 2.6 muB at T = 0 K, already in a year of 1998.
In this study, we report the observation of a pseudogap associated with the insulator-metal transition in compositions of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ system with no charge ordering. Our valence band photoemission study shows that the observed shifts in the near Fermi level density of states are abrupt at the Curie transtion and occur over an energy scale of $\sim$ 1 eV, strongly suggesting that the charge-ordering gap observed earlier in other manganites and the pseudogap observed here may indeed have same origin. These results could be understood within the framework of models based on electronic…
Using valence band photoemission we have demonstrated the presence of a pseudogap in the near Fermi level electronic spectrum of some of the mixed phase compositions of Sm$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ system. The pseudogap was found to grow in size over a large region of the phase diagram of this system, finally leading to a metal-insulator transition. We have made a study comparing the near Fermi level behaviors of this system to those of a canonical double exchange system, namely, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$. This study intends to highlight one of the important differences between the phase separated an…
By using laboratory x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES) at a synchrotron facility, we report an empirical semi-quantitative relationship between the valence/core-level x-ray photoemission spectral weight and electrical conductivity in La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} as a function of x. In the Mn 2p_{3/2} HX-PES spectra, we observed the shoulder structure due to the Mn^{3+} well-screened state. However, the intensity at x=0.8 was too small to explain its higher electrical conductivity than x=0.0, which confirms our recent analysis on the Mn 2p_{3/2} X…
We have investigated the shifts of the core-level photoemission spectra of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films grown on three kinds of substrates, SrTiO$_3$, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$, and LaAlO$_3$. The experimental shifts of the La 4d and Sr 3d core levels are almost the same as the calculation, which we attribute to the absence of covalency effects on the Madelung potentials at these atomic sites due to the nearly ionic character of these atoms. On the other hand, the experimental shifts of the O $1s$ and Mn $2p$ core levels are negligibly small, in disagr…
The variational cluster approximation proposed by Potthoff is applied to the calculation of the single-particle spectral function of the transition metal oxides MnO, CoO and NiO. Trial self-energies and the numerical value of the Luttinger-Ward functional are obtained by exact diagonalization of a TMO6-cluster. The single-particle parameters of this cluster serve as variational parameters to construct a stationary point of the grand potential of the lattice system. The stationary point is found by a crossover procedure which allows to go continuously from an array of disconnected clusters to t…
We have performed a depth-profile analysis of an all-oxide p-n junction diode n-ZnO/p-NiO using photoemission spectroscopy combined with Ar-ion sputtering. Systematic core-level shifts were observed during the gradual removal of the ZnO overlayer, and were interpreted using a simple model based on charge conservation. Spatial profile of the potential around the interface was deduced, including the charge-depletion width of 2.3 nm extending on the ZnO side and the built-in potential of 0.54 eV.
We report complex band structure (CBS) calculations for the four late transition metal monoxides, MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO, in their paramagnetic phase. The CBS is obtained from density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to take into account correlation effects. The so-called $β$ parameters, governing the exponential decay of the transmission probability in the non-resonant tunneling regime of these oxides, are extracted from the CBS. Different model constructions are examined in the DMFT part of the calculation. The calculated $β$ parameters provide theoretica…
We have studied the chemical potential shift in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ and the charge ordering transition in La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ by photoemission spectroscopy. The result shows a large ($\sim$ 1 eV/hole) downward shift of the chemical potential with hole doping in the high-doping regime ($δ\gtrsim$ 0.33) while the shift is suppressed in the low-doping regime ($δ\lesssim$ 0.33). This suppression is attributed to a segregation of doped holes on a microscopic scale when the hole concentration is lower than $δ\simeq 1/3$. In the $δ= 1/3$ sample, the photoemission intensity at the chemic…
We have studied the chemical potential shift and changes in the electronic density of states near the Fermi level ($E_F$) as a function of carrier concentration in Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ (PCMO, $0.2 \le x \le 0.65$) through the measurements of photoemission spectra. The results showed that the chemical potential shift was suppressed for $x \agt 0.3$, where the charge exchange (CE)-type antiferromagnetic charge-ordered state appears at low temperatures. We consider this observation to be related to charge self-organization such as stripe formation on a microscopic scale in this composition ran…
We have performed x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) on thin films of (001) and (200) oriented La(0.67)Ca(0.33)MnO(3) grown on (100) and (110) SrTiO(3) substrates by off-axis sputtering. The films were examined by XPS without exposing them to air. We have compared the core levels and the valence spectra between the two different orientations, as well as after the effects of air exposure and annealing in UHV. We find that the surfaces are very stable against exposure to air. Comparing the measured intensity ratios to a model for the uniform termination of the film shows the terminating laye…
We have studied the chemical potential shift in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) as a function of doped hole concentration by core-level x-ray photoemission. The shift is monotonous, which means that there is no electronic phase separation on a macroscopic scale, whereas it is consistent with the nano-meter scale cluster formation induced by chemical disorder. Comparison of the observed shift with the shift deduced from the electronic specific heat indicates that hole doping in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) is well described by the rigid-band picture. In particular no mass enhancement toward the metal-insulator bounda…
We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of rela…
In this paper I report evidence that the antiferromagnetic and insulating ground state of MnO is caused by a nonadiabatic atomic-like motion as it is evidently the case in NiO. In addition, I show that the experimental findings of Goodwin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006), 96,~047209] corroborate my suggestion that the rhombohedral-like distortion in antiferromagnetic MnO as well as in antiferromagnetic NiO is an inner distortion of the monoclinic base-centered Bravais lattice of the antiferromagnetic phases.
We have studied the temperature evolution of the inverse photoemission spectra of phase separated La$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$MnO$_{3}$. To identify the features in the room temperature experimental spectra, band structure calculations using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method were carried out. We find that the features generated by local moment disorder calculations give a better match with the experimental spectrum. In the insulating phase, we observed unusually an increased intensity at around the Fermi level. This puzzling behaviour is attributed to the shift in the chemical potential t…
A GW approximation (GWA) method named U+GWA is proposed, where we can start GWA with more localized wave functions obtained by the local spin-density approximation (LSDA)+U method. Then GWA and U+GWA are applied to MnO, NiO, and V$_2$O$_3$ in antiferromagnetic phase. The band gaps and energy spectra show an excellent agreement with the experimentally observed results and are discussed in details. The calculated width of d-bands of V$_2$O$_3$ is much narrower than that of the observed one which may be a mixture of t$_{2g}^2$ multiplet and single electron t$_{2g}$ level. GWA or U+GWA does not wo…
The Curie temperature and x-ray photoemission spectra of thin films of La_{0.67}(Ca_{x}Sr_{1-x})_{0.33}MnO_{3} (LCSMO) have been studied as a function of the Ca/Sr ratio. The films were grown by off-axis cosputtering from individual targets of La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} (LCMO) and La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3} (LSMO) onto (100) oriented NdGaO_{3} substrates. The films grow with a (100) orientation, with no other orientations observed by x-ray diffraction. For the alloy mixtures, the Curie temperature, T_C, varies slowly as the Ca/Sr is decreased, remaining $\approx$ 300 K, while for the LCMO and LS…
We have performed an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-crystal surfaces of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) substrates by laser molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure near the Fermi level ($E_{F}$). The experimental results were compared with the band-structure calculation based on LDA + $U$. The band structure of LSMO thin films consists of several highly dispersive O 2$p$ derived bands in the binding energy range of 2.0 - 6.0 eV and Mn 3$d$ derived bands near $E_{F}$. ARPES spectra around t…
We describe the ground- and excited-state electronic structure of bulk MnO and NiO, two prototypical correlated electron materials, using coupled cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD). As a corollary, this work also reports the first implementation of unrestricted periodic ab initio equation-of motion CCSD. Starting from a Hartree-Fock reference, we find fundamental gaps of 3.46 eV and 4.83 eV for MnO and NiO respectively for the 16 unit supercell, slightly overestimated compared to experiment, although finite-size scaling suggests that the gap is more severely overestimated…
We have studied the temperature dependence of the photoemission spectra of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ (PCMO) with $x=0.25$, 0.3 and 0.5. For $x=0.3$ and 0.5, we observed a gap in the low-temperature CE-type charge-ordered (CO) phase and a pseudogap with a finite intensity at the Fermi level ($E_F$) in the high-temperature paramagnetic insulating (PI) phase. Within the CO phase, the spectral intensity near $E_F$ gradually increased with temperature. These observations are consistent with the results of Monte Carlo simulations on a model including charge ordering and ferromagnetic fluctuations [H. …
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results for thin films of the three-dimensional manganese perovskite La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$. We show that the transition temperature ($T_c$) from the paramagnetic insulating to ferromagnetic metallic state is closely related to details of the electronic structure, particularly to the spectral weight at the ${\bf k}$-point, where the sharpest step at the Fermi level was observed. We found that this ${\bf k}$-point is the same for all the samples, despite their different $T_c$. The change of $T_c$ is discussed in terms of kinetic energy o…
Using hard x-ray (HX ; $hν$ = 5.95 keV) synchrotron photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we study the intrinsic electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. Comparison of Mn 2$p$ core-levels with Soft x-ray (SX ; $hν$ $\sim$ 1000 eV) -PES shows a clear additional well-screened feature only in HX-PES. Take-off-angle dependent data indicate its bulk ($\ge$ 20 Å) character. The doping and temperature dependence track the ferromagnetism and metallicity of the LSMO series. Cluster model calculations including charge transfer from doping induced states show good agreement, confirm…
Perovskite manganite thin films, $Pr_{0.55}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_y)_{0.45}MnO_3$, have been studied using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy in order to clarify the consequence of the competition between ferromagnetic metal (FM) and charge-orbital ordered insulator (COOI). Films with $y$ = 0.40 undergo uniform paramagnetic insulator to FM transition. On the other hand, in films with $y$ = 0.25, the composition near the bicritical point, phase separation of COOI and FM domains is indicated by the spectral change below 125 K. Interestingly, between 50 K and 70 K, the visible laser illumination transfers the…
Perovskite-type BiNiO$_3$ is an insulating antiferromagnet in which a charge disproportionation occurs at the Bi site. La substitution for Bi suppresses the charge disproportionation and makes the system metallic. We have measured the photoemission and x-ray absorption (XAS) spectra of Bi$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$ to investigate how the electronic structure changes with La doping. From Ni $2p$ XAS, we observed an increase of the valence of Ni from 2+ toward 3+. Combined with the core-level photoemission study, it was found that the average valence of Bi remains $\sim 4+$ and that the Ni valence…
Using a combination of {\it ab initio} bandstructure methods and dynamical mean-field theory we study the single-particle spectrum of the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO. Good agreement with photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectra is obtained for both stoichiometric and hole-doped systems. In spite of a large Ni-$d$ spectral weight at the top of the valence band the doped holes are found to occupy mainly the ligand $p$ orbitals. Moreover, high hole doping leads to a significant reconstruction of the single-particle spectrum accompanied by a filling of the correlation gap.
In spite of extensive studies on NiO and their accomplishments, the rich physics still raises unsolved physical problems. In particular, the nature of the two-peak structure in the valence band photoemission spectra is still controversial. By using \textit{ab initio} LQSGW+DMFT, the two-peak structure is shown to be driven by the concerted effect of antiferromagnetic ordering and intersite electron hopping. Magnetic ordering in the Ni-$e_{g}$ orbitals splits majority- and minority-spin Ni-$t_{2g}$ levels due to local Hund's coupling. Strong hybridization between O-$p$ and Ni-$e_g$, a signature…
We have re-examined the valence-band (VB) and core-level electronic structure of NiO by means of hard and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The spectral weight of the lowest energy state found to be enhanced in the bulk sensitive Ni 2p core-level PES. A configuration-interaction model including the bound state screening has shown significant agreement with the core-level spectra, and the off and on-resonance VB spectra. These results identify the lowest energy state in core-level and VB-PES as the Zhang-Rice doublet bound state, consistent with the spin-fermion model and recent ab i…
We have investigated change in the electronic structures of atomically-controlled La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films as a function of hole-doping level ($x$) in terms of {\it in situ} photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The {\it in situ} PES measurements on a well-ordered surface of high-quality epitaxial LSMO thin films enable us to reveal their intrinsic electronic structures, especially the structure near the Fermi level ($E_F$). We have found that overall features of valence band as well as the core levels monotonically shifted towa…
The bandstructure of the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO is computed by using a combination of an {\it ab initio} bandstructure method and the dynamical mean-field theory with a quantum Monte-Carlo impurity solver. Employing a Hamiltonian which includes both Ni-d and O-p orbitals we find excellent agreement with the energy bands determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This solves a long-standing problem in solid state theory. Most notably we obtain the low-energy Zhang-Rice bands with strongly k-dependent orbital character discussed previously in the context of lo…
We present experimental and theoretical results for the variation of the O 1s intensity from a NiO(001) surface as the excitation energy is varied through the Ni 2p1/2,3/2 absorption resonances, and as the incidence angle of the radiation is varied from grazing to larger values. For grazing incidence, a strong multi-atom resonant photoemission (MARPE) effect is seen on the O 1s intensity as the Ni 2p resonances are crossed, but its magnitude decreases rapidly as the incidence angle is increased. Resonant x-ray optical (RXRO) calculations are found to predict these effects very well, although t…
We have studied the effects of band filling and bandwidth control on the chemical potential in perovskite manganites $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$ ($R$ : rare earth, $A$ : alkaline earth) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. A suppression of the doping-dependent chemical potential shift was observed in and around the CE-type charge-ordered composition range, indicating that there is charge self-organization such as stripe formation or its fluctuations. As a function of bandwidth, we observed a downward chemical potential shift with increasing bandwidth due to the reduction of the orthorh…
X-ray photoemission spectra generally exhibit satellite features in addition to the quasi-particle peaks due to many-body excitations, which have been of considerable theoretical and experimental interest. However, the satellites attributed to charge-transfer (CT) excitations in correlated materials have proved difficult to calculate from first principles. Here we report a real-time, real-space approach for such calculations based on a cumulant representation of the core-hole Green's function and time-dependent density functional theory. This approach also yields an interpretation of CT satell…
The Hubbard model is implemented in real-space Green's function calculations of x-ray spectra using an effective self-energy adapted from the LSDA+U method of Anisimov et al. This self-energy consists of an energy-dependent many-pole approximation to the GW self-energy with an additive correction due to on-site Coulomb repulsion among the partially filled localized-electron states. This leads to a GW+U approach which provides an efficient procedure to account for local correlation effects on x-ray spectra. Results are presented for the spin and angular momentum projected density of states of M…
By introducing electron screening in the extended Koopmans' theorem we correctly describe the band gap opening in weakly as well as strongly correlated systems. We show this by applying our method to bulk LiH, Si, and paramagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic NiO. Although incorrect features remain in the full photoemission spectra, this is a remarkable result for an ab-initio electronic structure method and it opens the way to a unified description of photoemission spectra at weak and strong correlation.
Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental results and interpretation of ARPES data using empirical tight-binding band-structure calculations. Results are presented for SrVO$_3$ (SVO) bulk single crystals, and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. In the case of SVO, from comparison of…
We study $1s$ and $2p$ hard x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in a series of late transition metal oxides: Fe$_2$O$_3$ (3$d^{5}$), FeTiO$_3$ (3$d^{6}$), CoO (3$d^{7}$) and NiO (3$d^{8}$). The experimental spectra are analyzed with two theoretical approaches: the MO$_6$ cluster model and the local density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Owing to the absence of the core-valence multiplets and spin-orbit coupling, 1$s$ XPS is found to be a sensitive probe of chemical bonding and nonlocal charge-transfer screening, providing complementary information to 2$p$ XPS. The 1$s$…
In this work we explore the performance of a recently derived many-body effective energy theory for the calculation of photoemission spectra in the regime of strong electron correlation. We apply the theory to paramagnetic MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO, which are typical examples of strongly correlated materials and, therefore, a challenge for standard theories. We show that our methods open a correlation gap in all the oxides studied without breaking the symmetry. Although the materials seem similar, we show that an analysis of the occupation numbers reveals that the nature of the gap is not the sam…
We report the bulk sensitive Hard X-ray (hv=5.95keV) core level photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the intrinsic electronic structure of strained (La0.85Ba0.15)MnO3 thin films. In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrained film with 300nm thickness. Cluster calculations revealed that the intensity corresponded to the density of the state at the Fermi level relating to the magnitude of the ferromagnetic order. The satel…
We present a method for the calculation of photoemission spectra in terms of reduced density matrices. We start from the spectral representation of the one-body Green's function G, whose imaginary part is related to photoemission spectra, and we introduce a frequency-dependent effective energy that accounts for all the poles of G. Simple approximations to this effective energy give accurate spectra in model systems in the weak as well as strong correlation regime. In real systems reduced density matrices can be obtained from reduced density-matrix functional theory. Here we use this approach t…
Electronic structures of very dilute Cr- or Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}MnO_{3} (NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using the Mn and Cr 2p -> 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. The Cr 3d states with t^3_{2g} configuration are at ~ 1.3 eV below E_F, and the Cr e_{g} states do not participate in the formation of the band near E_F. Cr- and Ru-induced ferromagnetism and insulator-to-metal transitions can be understood with …
Charge excitations across an electronic band gap play an important role in opto-electronics and light harvesting. In contrast to conventional semiconductors, studies of above-band-gap photoexcitations in strongly correlated materials are still in their infancy. Here we reveal the ultrafast dynamics controlled by Hund's physics in strongly correlated photo-excited NiO. By combining time-resolved two-photon photoemission experiments with state-of-the-art numerical calculations, an ultrafast ($\lesssim$ 10\,fs) relaxation due to Hund excitations and related photo-induced in-gap states are identif…
We have revisited the valence band electronic structure of NiO by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) together with theoretical calculations using both the GW method and the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approaches. The effective impurity problem in DMFT is solved through the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We show that the LDA+DMFT method alone cannot explain all the observed structures in the HAXPES spectra. GW corrections are required for the O bands and Ni-s and p derived states to properly position their binding energies. Our r…
We investigate the magnetic properties of archetypal transition-metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO under very high pressure by x-ray emission spectroscopy at the Kβline. We observe a strong modification of the magnetism in the megabar range in all the samples except NiO. The results are analyzed within a multiplet approach including charge-transfer effects. The pressure dependence of the emission line is well accounted for by changes of the ligand field acting on the d electrons and allows us to extract parameters like local d-hybridization strength, O-2p bandwidth and ionic crystal field acro…
We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering u…
We report on a comparative study of the valence band electronic structure of NiO as bulk material and of NiO as impurity in MgO. From the impurity we have been able to determine reliably the parameters which describe the local correlations, thereby establishing the compensated-spin character of the first ionization state or the state created by hole doping. Using bulk-sensitive x-ray photoemission we identify pronounced satellite features in the valence band of bulk NiO which cannot be explained by single-site many body approaches nor by mean field calculations. We infer the presence of screen…

We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic Raman scattering studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the bulk samples of the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to Nd $3d$ and O $1s$ XPS spectra, we conclude that NdNiO$_2$ has a large transfer energy. From the analysis of the main line of the Ni $2p_{3/2}$ XPS, we confirm the NiO$_2$ planes in NdNiO$_2$ are of Mott-Hubbard type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak positio…
We present a quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (QSGW) implementation for periodic systems based on crystalline Gaussian basis sets. Our QSGW approach is based on a full-frequency analytic continuation GW scheme with Brillouin zone sampling and employs the Gaussian density fitting technique. We benchmark our QSGW implementation on a set of weakly-correlated semiconductors and insulators as well as strongly correlated transition metal oxides including MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO. Band gap, band structure, and density of states are evaluated using finite size corrected QSGW. We find that although QSG…
Dynamical Hubbard approach to correlated materials: the case of transition-metal monoxides
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne(洛桑联邦理工学院);California Institute of Technology(加州理工学院);Colleege Champittet(尚皮泰学院);PSI Center for Scientific Computing, Theory and Data(瑞士保罗谢勒研究所科学计算、理论与数据中心)
We introduce a first principles approach to determine the strength of the electronic correlations based on the fully self consistent GW approximation. The approach provides a seamless interface with dynamical mean field theory, and gives good results for well studied correlated materials such as NiO. Applied to the recently discovered iron arsenide materials, it accounts for the noticeable correlation features observed in optics and photoemission while explaining the absence of visible satellites in X-ray absorption experiments and other high energy spectroscopies.
