The variational cluster approximation proposed by Potthoff is applied to the calculation of the single-particle spectral function of the transition metal oxides MnO, CoO and NiO. Trial self-energies and the numerical value of the Luttinger-Ward functional are obtained by exact diagonalization of a TMO6-cluster. The single-particle parameters of this cluster serve as variational parameters to construct a stationary point of the grand potential of the lattice system. The stationary point is found by a crossover procedure which allows to go continuously from an array of disconnected clusters to the lattice system. The self-energy is found to contain irrelevant degrees of freedom which have marginal impact on the grand potential and which need to be excluded to obtain meaningful results. The obtained spectral functions are in good agreement with experimental data.
The possibility of magnetic-order induced phonon anisotropy in single crystals of MnO and NiO is investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. Below Tn both compounds exhibit a splitting in their transverse optical phonon spectra of approximately 10%. This behavior illustrates that, contrary to general assumption, the dynamic properties of MnO and NiO are substantially non-cubic.
In contrary to authors of Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 126406 (2004) claiming "the band picture to be a reasonable starting point for the description of the electronic structure of NiO, much better than the ligand-field picture", we argue that the many-electron CEF approach is physically adequate starting point for discussion of the electronic structure and magnetism of NiO.
We claim that any approach neglecting the spin-orbit coupling and the orbital magnetism is not physically adequate for 3d oxides, including NiO, and that in reaching "excellent agreement" in a Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 126406 (2004) paper too small experimental value of 1.9 muB has been taken for the Ni magnetic moment despite publication of a new experimental value of 2.2 muB, at 300 K yielding 2.6 muB at T = 0 K, already in a year of 1998.
We report complex band structure (CBS) calculations for the four late transition metal monoxides, MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO, in their paramagnetic phase. The CBS is obtained from density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to take into account correlation effects. The so-called $β$ parameters, governing the exponential decay of the transmission probability in the non-resonant tunneling regime of these oxides, are extracted from the CBS. Different model constructions are examined in the DMFT part of the calculation. The calculated $β$ parameters provide theoretica…
We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of rela…
In this paper I report evidence that the antiferromagnetic and insulating ground state of MnO is caused by a nonadiabatic atomic-like motion as it is evidently the case in NiO. In addition, I show that the experimental findings of Goodwin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006), 96,~047209] corroborate my suggestion that the rhombohedral-like distortion in antiferromagnetic MnO as well as in antiferromagnetic NiO is an inner distortion of the monoclinic base-centered Bravais lattice of the antiferromagnetic phases.
A GW approximation (GWA) method named U+GWA is proposed, where we can start GWA with more localized wave functions obtained by the local spin-density approximation (LSDA)+U method. Then GWA and U+GWA are applied to MnO, NiO, and V$_2$O$_3$ in antiferromagnetic phase. The band gaps and energy spectra show an excellent agreement with the experimentally observed results and are discussed in details. The calculated width of d-bands of V$_2$O$_3$ is much narrower than that of the observed one which may be a mixture of t$_{2g}^2$ multiplet and single electron t$_{2g}$ level. GWA or U+GWA does not wo…
The accurate ab-initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab-initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single particle spectral function of the two correlated $d$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab-initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the non-lo…
We describe the ground- and excited-state electronic structure of bulk MnO and NiO, two prototypical correlated electron materials, using coupled cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD). As a corollary, this work also reports the first implementation of unrestricted periodic ab initio equation-of motion CCSD. Starting from a Hartree-Fock reference, we find fundamental gaps of 3.46 eV and 4.83 eV for MnO and NiO respectively for the 16 unit supercell, slightly overestimated compared to experiment, although finite-size scaling suggests that the gap is more severely overestimated…
The Hubbard model is implemented in real-space Green's function calculations of x-ray spectra using an effective self-energy adapted from the LSDA+U method of Anisimov et al. This self-energy consists of an energy-dependent many-pole approximation to the GW self-energy with an additive correction due to on-site Coulomb repulsion among the partially filled localized-electron states. This leads to a GW+U approach which provides an efficient procedure to account for local correlation effects on x-ray spectra. Results are presented for the spin and angular momentum projected density of states of M…
The total, orbital and spin moment of the Co2+ ion in CoO has been calculated within the quasi-atomic approach with taking into account strong correlations, crystal-field interactions and the intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling. The orbital moment of 1.39 μB amounts at 0 K, in the magnetically-ordered state, to more than 34% of the total moment (4.01 μB). The same calculations yield for NiO the orbital and total moment of 0.46 μB and 2.45 μB, respectively. The low-doped magnetic perovskite La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3 undergoes within the paramagnetic-semiconducting phase a first-order structural transition due to antiferrodistorsive ordering of Jahn-Teller deformed MnO_6 octahedra. This allows to study not only the influence of the spin configuration on the magneto-transport properties (CMR effect) but also the role of orbital order and disorder. The orbital ordering transition (at 269 K in zero magnetic field) causes a doubling of the resistivity (regardless of the CMR effect in applied magnetic fields) and a drop of the paramagnetic susceptibility. …
Spin, charge, and orbital structures in models for doped manganites are studied by a combination of analytic mean-field and numerical relaxation techniques. At realistic values for the electron-phonon and antiferromagnetic $t_{2g}$ spin couplings, a competition between a ferromagnetic (FM) phase and a charge-orbital ordered (COO) insulating state is found for $x$=1/4, 3/8, and 1/2, as experimentally observed in Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ for $x$=0.3$\sim$0.5. The theoretical predictions for the spin-charge-orbital ordering pattern are compared with experiments. The FM-COO energy difference is s…
We investigate the magnetic properties of archetypal transition-metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO under very high pressure by x-ray emission spectroscopy at the Kβline. We observe a strong modification of the magnetism in the megabar range in all the samples except NiO. The results are analyzed within a multiplet approach including charge-transfer effects. The pressure dependence of the emission line is well accounted for by changes of the ligand field acting on the d electrons and allows us to extract parameters like local d-hybridization strength, O-2p bandwidth and ionic crystal field acro…
X-Ray diffraction, ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in order to investigate the effect of Ag substitution for Pr in the polycrystalline Pr$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$MnO$_3$ (0.0$\leq$x$\leq$0.25) manganites. The XRD results show that the samples crystallize in the O'-orthorhombic structure with a cooperative Jahn-Teller deformation. We give evidence that the Ag$^{+}$ is not substituted at the Pr$^{3+}$ site in the PrMnO$_{3}$ structure. The increase of $T_{C}$ up to 130 K is suggested to be due to further oxidation of manganite grains by the oxygen released from the …
We present magnetization studies in a series of phase separated La$_{0.5}$Ca$%_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ samples, with different low temperature fractions of the ferromagnetic (FM) and charge ordered-antiferromagnetic (CO-AFM) phases. A particular experimental procedure probes the effect of the magnetic field applied while cooling the samples, which promotes FM fraction enlargement and enhances the melting of the CO phase. The response of the system depending on its magnetic field history indicates the existence of three different regimes in the phase separated state which develops below T$_{C}$. Our da…
We present Raman scattering studies of the structural and magnetic phases that accompany temperature- and field-dependent melting of charge- and orbital-order (COO) in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3. Our results show that thermal and field-induced COO melting in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 exhibits three stages in a heterogeneous melting process associated with a structural change: a long-range, strongly JT distorted/COO regime; a coexistence regime; and weakly JT distorted/PM or FM phase. We provide a complete structural phase diagram of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 for the temperature and field ranges 6<=…
The paper reports theoretical evidence that the multi-spin-axis magnetic structure proposed in 1964 by van Laar actually does exist in CoO. This tetragonal spin arrangement produces both the strong tetragonal and the weaker monoclinic distortion experimentally observed in this material. The monoclinic distortion is proposed to be a "monoclinic-like" distortion of the array of the oxygen atoms, comparable with the rhombohedral-like distortion of the oxygen atoms recently proposed to be present in NiO and MnO. The monoclinic-like distortion has no influence on the tetragonal magnetic structure w…
Neutron powder diffraction measurements, combined with magnetization and resistivity data, have been carried out in the doped perovskite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x=0.47$, 0.50, and 0.53) to elucidate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the system around the composition corresponding to an equal number of Mn3+ and Mn4+. At room temperature all three samples are paramagnetic and single phase, with crystallographic symmetry Pnma. The samples then all become ferromagnetic (FM) at $T_C\approx 265$ K. At $\sim 230$ K, however, a second distinct crystallographic phase (denoted A-I…
We discuss the recently proposed LDA'+DMFT approach providing consistent parameter free treatment of the so called double counting problem arising within the LDA+DMFT hybrid computational method for realistic strongly correlated materials. In this approach the local exchange-correlation portion of electron-electron interaction is excluded from self consistent LDA calculations for strongly correlated electronic shells, e.g. d-states of transition metal compounds. Then the corresponding double counting term in LDA+DMFT Hamiltonian is consistently set in the local Hartree (fully localized limit -…
We report x-ray scattering studies of broad peaks located at a (0.5 0 0)/(0 0.5 0)-type wavevector in the paramagnetic insulating phases of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} and Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}. We interpret the scattering in terms of correlated polarons and measure isotropic correlation lengths of 1-2 lattice constants in both samples. Based on the wavevector and correlation lengths, the correlated polarons are found to be consistent with CE-type bipolarons. Differences in behavior between the samples arise as they are cooled through their respective transition temperatures and become ferromagn…
We investigate the consequences of the stripe formation in the nickelate La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 for the details of its crystal structure and electronic states. Our data are based on numerical simulations within density functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The on-site Coulomb interaction is included in terms of the LDA+U scheme. Structure optimization of preliminary experimental data indicates a strong interaction between the structural and electronic degrees of freedom. In particular, we find a segregation of the diagonal filled stripes induced by a delicate interp…
We present resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) results from small band width manganites (Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$, which show that the CE-type spin ordering (SO) at the phase boundary is stabilized only below the canted antiferromagnetic transition temperature and enhanced by ferromagnetism in the macroscopically insulating state (FM-I). Our results reveal the fragility of the CE-type ordering that underpins the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in this system, as well as an unexpected cooperative interplay between FM-I and CE-type SO which is in contrast to the competitive interplay between the …
Here we present a study of the entanglement in the electronic structure of the late transition metal monoxides - MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO - obtained by means of density-functional theory in the local density approximation combined with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). The impurity problem is solved through Exact Diagonalization (ED), which grants full access to the thermally mixed many-body ground state density operator. The quality of the electronic structure is affirmed through a direct comparison between the calculated electronic excitation spectrum and photoemission experiments. Our t…
We present a quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (QSGW) implementation for periodic systems based on crystalline Gaussian basis sets. Our QSGW approach is based on a full-frequency analytic continuation GW scheme with Brillouin zone sampling and employs the Gaussian density fitting technique. We benchmark our QSGW implementation on a set of weakly-correlated semiconductors and insulators as well as strongly correlated transition metal oxides including MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO. Band gap, band structure, and density of states are evaluated using finite size corrected QSGW. We find that although QSG…
