We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of relative weights of the different valence states and spin-state configurations. Employing the concept of fluctuating valence in a correlated solid, we demonstrate that in MnO, FeO, and CoO a Mott insulator-metal transition and collapse of the local moments is accompanied by a sharp crossover of the spin-state and valence configurations. Our microscopic explanation of the magnetic collapse differs from the accepted picture and points out a remarkable dynamical coexistence (frustration) of the high-, intermediate-, and low-spin states. In particular, in MnO, the magnetic collapse is found to be driven by the appearance of the intermediate-spin state (IS), competing with the low-spin (LS) state; in FeO, we observe a conventional high-spin to low-spin (HS-LS) crossover. Most interestingly, in CoO, we obtain a remarkable (dynamical) coexistence of the HS and LS states, i.e., a HS-LS frustration, up to high pressure. Our results demonstrate the importance of quantum fluctuations of the valence and spin states for the understanding of quantum criticality of the Mott transitions.
We report complex band structure (CBS) calculations for the four late transition metal monoxides, MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO, in their paramagnetic phase. The CBS is obtained from density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to take into account correlation effects. The so-called $β$ parameters, governing the exponential decay of the transmission probability in the non-resonant tunneling regime of these oxides, are extracted from the CBS. Different model constructions are examined in the DMFT part of the calculation. The calculated $β$ parameters provide theoretica…
An approach to compute exchange parameters of the Heisenberg model in plane-wave-based methods is presented. This calculation scheme is based on the Green's function method and Wannier function projection technique. It was implemented in the framework of the pseudopotential method and tested on such materials as NiO, FeO, Li2MnO3, and KCuF3. The obtained exchange constants are in a good agreement with both the total energy calculations and experimental estimations for NiO and KCuF3. In the case of FeO our calculations explain the pressure dependence of the Néel temperature. Li2MnO3 turns out t…
We investigate the magnetic properties of archetypal transition-metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO under very high pressure by x-ray emission spectroscopy at the Kβline. We observe a strong modification of the magnetism in the megabar range in all the samples except NiO. The results are analyzed within a multiplet approach including charge-transfer effects. The pressure dependence of the emission line is well accounted for by changes of the ligand field acting on the d electrons and allows us to extract parameters like local d-hybridization strength, O-2p bandwidth and ionic crystal field acro…
The total, orbital and spin moment of the Co2+ ion in CoO has been calculated within the quasi-atomic approach with taking into account strong correlations, crystal-field interactions and the intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling. The orbital moment of 1.39 μB amounts at 0 K, in the magnetically-ordered state, to more than 34% of the total moment (4.01 μB). The same calculations yield for NiO the orbital and total moment of 0.46 μB and 2.45 μB, respectively. PACS No: 71.70.E; 75.10.D Keywords: 3d magnetism, crystal field, spin-orbit coupling, orbital moment, CoO, NiO
The crystal field splitting and d bandwidth of the 3d transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO are analyzed as a function of pressure within density functional theory. In all four cases the 3d bandwidth is significantly larger than the crystal field splitting over a wide range of compressions. The bandwidth actually increases more as pressure is increased than the crystal field splitting. Therefore the role of increasing bandwidth must be considered in any explanation of a possible spin collapse that these materials may exhibit under pressure.
In multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ a cycloidal antiferromagnetic structure is coupled to a large electric polarization at room temperature, giving rise to magnetoelectric functionality that may be exploited in novel multiferroic-based devices. In this paper, we demonstrate that by substituting samarium for 10% of the bismuth ions the periodicity of the room temperature cycloid is increased, and by cooling below $\sim15$ K the magnetic structure tends towards a simple G-type antiferromagnet, which is fully established at 1.5 K. We show that this transition results from $f-d$ exchange coupling, which ind…
We report a detail theoretical study of the electronic structure and phase stability of transition metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO in their paramagnetic cubic B1 structure by employing dynamical mean-field theory of correlated electrons combined with \emph{ab initio} band structure methods (DFT+DMFT). Our calculations reveal that under pressure these materials exhibit a Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) which is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. Moreover…
The variational cluster approximation proposed by Potthoff is applied to the calculation of the single-particle spectral function of the transition metal oxides MnO, CoO and NiO. Trial self-energies and the numerical value of the Luttinger-Ward functional are obtained by exact diagonalization of a TMO6-cluster. The single-particle parameters of this cluster serve as variational parameters to construct a stationary point of the grand potential of the lattice system. The stationary point is found by a crossover procedure which allows to go continuously from an array of disconnected clusters to t…
Ordered electronic phases are intimately related to emerging phenomena such as high Tc superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The coupling of electronic charge with other degrees of freedom such as lattice and spin are of central interest in correlated systems. Their correlations have been intensively studied from femtosecond to picosecond time scales, while the dynamics of ordered electronic phases beyond nanoseconds are usually assumed to follow a trivia thermally driven recovery. Here, we report an unusual slowing down of the recovery of an electronic phase across a first-order p…
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments show that spin dynamics in the charge ordered insulating ground state of the double-layer perovskite YBaFe2O5 is well described in terms of eg superexchange interactions. Above the Verwey transition at TV = 308 K, t2g double exchange-type conduction within antiferromagnetic FeO2--BaO--FeO2 double layers proceeds by an electron hopping process that requires a spin flip of the five-fold coordinated Fe ions, costing an energy 5<J>S^2 of approximately 0.1 eV. The hopping process disrupts near-neighbor spin correlations, leading to massive damping of zone-bo…
The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling, the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l = even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result of competition between magnetic and charge order.
We report a detailed neutron scattering study of the ordering of spins and holes in oxygen-doped La(2)NiO(4.133). The single-crystal sample exhibits the same oxygen-interstitial order but better defined charge-stripe order than that studied previously in crystals with d = 0.125. In particular, charge order is observed up to a temperature at least twice that of the magnetic transition, T_m = 110.5 K. On cooling through T_m, the wave vector ε, equal to half the charge-stripe density within an NiO(2) layer, jumps discontinuously from 1/3 to 0.2944. It continues to decrease with further cooling, s…
We investigate the consequences of the stripe formation in the nickelate La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 for the details of its crystal structure and electronic states. Our data are based on numerical simulations within density functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The on-site Coulomb interaction is included in terms of the LDA+U scheme. Structure optimization of preliminary experimental data indicates a strong interaction between the structural and electronic degrees of freedom. In particular, we find a segregation of the diagonal filled stripes induced by a delicate interp…
NiO thin films with various strains were grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and MgO substrates using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were characterized using an x-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The films grown on STO (001) substrate show a compressive in-plane strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced, resulting in an increase of the NiO phonon frequency. On the other hand, a tensile strain was detected in the NiO film grown on MgO (001) substrate which induces a softening of the phonon frequency. Overall, the variation of in…
Here we present a study of the entanglement in the electronic structure of the late transition metal monoxides - MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO - obtained by means of density-functional theory in the local density approximation combined with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). The impurity problem is solved through Exact Diagonalization (ED), which grants full access to the thermally mixed many-body ground state density operator. The quality of the electronic structure is affirmed through a direct comparison between the calculated electronic excitation spectrum and photoemission experiments. Our t…
We use the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method to calculate the Hubbard $U$ parameter in four one-dimensional magnetic transition metal atom oxides of composition XO$_2$ (X = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) on Ir(100). In addition to the expected screening of the oxide, i.e., a significant reduction of the $U$ value by the presence of the metal substrate, we find a strong dependence on the electronic configuration (multiplet) of the X($d$) orbital. Each particular electronic configuration attained by atom X is dictated by the O ligands, as well as by the charge transfer and hybridization with…
We discuss the recently proposed LDA'+DMFT approach providing consistent parameter free treatment of the so called double counting problem arising within the LDA+DMFT hybrid computational method for realistic strongly correlated materials. In this approach the local exchange-correlation portion of electron-electron interaction is excluded from self consistent LDA calculations for strongly correlated electronic shells, e.g. d-states of transition metal compounds. Then the corresponding double counting term in LDA+DMFT Hamiltonian is consistently set in the local Hartree (fully localized limit -…
The paper reports theoretical evidence that the multi-spin-axis magnetic structure proposed in 1964 by van Laar actually does exist in CoO. This tetragonal spin arrangement produces both the strong tetragonal and the weaker monoclinic distortion experimentally observed in this material. The monoclinic distortion is proposed to be a "monoclinic-like" distortion of the array of the oxygen atoms, comparable with the rhombohedral-like distortion of the oxygen atoms recently proposed to be present in NiO and MnO. The monoclinic-like distortion has no influence on the tetragonal magnetic structure w…
We report an investigation of Metal Insulator Transition (MIT) using conductivity and magnetoconductance (MC) measurements down to 0.3 K in Nd_{0.7}La_{0.3}NiO_{3} films grown on crystalline substrates of LaAlO_{3} (LAO), SrTiO_{3} (STO), and NdGaO_{3}(NGO) by pulsed laser deposition. The film grown on LAO experiences a compressive strain and shows metallic behavior with the onset of a weak resistivity upturn below 2 K which is linked to the onset of weak localization contribution. Films grown on STO and NGO show a crossover from a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) resistance regime to Ne…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe quasi-two-dimensional layered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ nickelates and study it using correlated wave functions on $8 \times 8 $ and $6 \times 6 $ clusters. The effective Hamiltonian includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons (intraorbital $U$ and Hund's exchange $J_H$) and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller distortions (static modes). The experimental ground state phases with inhomogeneous charge, spin and orbital order at the dopings $x=1/3$ and $x=1/2$ are reproduced very wel…
Using the first-principles density functional approach, we investigate Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$, a material of double perovskite structure synthesized recently. According to the calculations, Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$ is a ferrimagnetic Mott-insulator influenced by the cooperative effect of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb interactions of Fe-3$d$ and Os-5$d$ electrons, as well as the crystal field. When Fe is replaced with Ni, the system exhibits half metallic (HM) states desirable for spintronic applications. In [Ca$_2$Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$OsO$_6$]$_2$, HM ferrimagnetism is observed with $μ_{\rm tot}=2μ_{\rm B}…
We have measured the photoemission spectra of Nd$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$, where the metal-insulator transition and the Néel ordering occur at the same temperature for $x \lesssim 0.4$ and the metal-insulator transition temperature ($T_{MI}$) is higher than the Néel temperature for $x \gtrsim 0.4$. For $x \le 0.4$, the spectral intensity at the Fermi level is high in the metallic phase above $T_{MI}$ and gradually decreases with cooling in the insulating phase below $T_{MI}$ while for $x > 0.4$ it shows a pseudogap-like behavior above $T_{MI}$ and further diminishes below $T_{MI}$. The results…
Polycrystalline Nd$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$NiO$_3$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.5$) compounds were synthesized in order to investigate the character of the metal-insulator (MI) phase transition in this series. Samples were prepared through the sol-gel route and subjected to heat treatments at $\sim$1000 $^\circ$C under oxygen pressures as high as 80 bar. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD), electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and Magnetization $M(T)$ measurements were performed on these compounds. The results of NPD and XRD indicated that the samples crystallize in an orthorhombic distorted pe…
We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations …
The existence of a stripe-liquid phase in a layered nickelate, La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4), is demonstrated through neutron scattering measurements. We show that incommensurate magnetic fluctuations evolve continuously through the charge-ordering temperature, although an abrupt decrease in the effective damping energy is observed on cooling through the transition. The energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic scattering are parametrized with a damped-harmonic-oscillator model describing overdamped spin-waves in the antiferromagnetic domains defined instantaneously by charge stripes.
Commensurability effects for nickelates have been studied by the first neutron experiments on La5/3Sr1/3NiO4. Upon cooling, this system undergoes three successive phase transitions associated with quasi-two-dimensional (2D) commensurate charge and spin stripe ordering in the NiO$_2$ planes. The two lower temperature phases (denoted as phase II and III) are stripe lattice states with quasi-long-range in-plane charge correlation. When the lattice of 2D charge stripes melts, it goes through an intermediate glass state (phase I) before becoming a disordered liquid state. This glass state shows sho…
Superconductivity can be destroyed by a magnetic field with an upper bound known as the Pauli-limit in spin-singlet superconductors. Almost all the discovered superconductors are spin-singlet, with the highest transition temperature $T_c$ at ambient pressure achieved in the cuprate family. The closest cuprate analogue is the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate, which hosts substantial structural and electronic similarity to the cuprate. A previous magnetotransport study on Nd$_{0.775}$Sr$_{0.225}$NiO$_2$ has observed an isotropic Pauli-limited upper critical field. Here, we report a l…
We consider magnetostriction in magnetic materials. Starting from a microscopic lattice model of the magneto-elastic coupling, we derive the continuum magnetostriction Hamiltonian in cubic ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In ferromagnets, our results agree with established results. In antiferromagnets, we find a new central contribution which reflects the spin ordering. The additional term is essential in certain antiferromagnets where magnetic moments order in antiparallel ferromagnetic planes characterized by a normal axis. In such antiferromagnets, we predict that the magnetostrictive str…
