NiO thin films with various strains were grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and MgO substrates using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were characterized using an x-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The films grown on STO (001) substrate show a compressive in-plane strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced, resulting in an increase of the NiO phonon frequency. On the other hand, a tensile strain was detected in the NiO film grown on MgO (001) substrate which induces a softening of the phonon frequency. Overall, the variation of in-plane strain from -0.36% to +0.48% yields the decrease of the phonon frequency from 409.6 cm-1 to 377.5 cm-1 which occurs due to the ~1% change of the inter-atomic distances. The magnetic exchange -driven phonon splitting Delta(W) in three different sample, with relaxed (i.e. zero) strain, 0.36% compressive and 0.48% tensile strain was measured as a function of temperature. The Delta(W) increases on cooling in NiO relaxed film as in the previously published work on a bulk crystal. The splitting increases on cooling also in 0.48% tensile strained film, but Delta(W) is systematically 3-4 cm-1 smaller than in relaxed film. Since the phonon splitting is proportional to the non-dominant magnetic exchange interaction J1, the reduction of phonon splitting in tensile-strained film was explained by a diminishing J1 with lattice expansion. Increase of Delta(W) on cooling can be also explained by rising of J1 with reduced temperature.
The possibility of magnetic-order induced phonon anisotropy in single crystals of MnO and NiO is investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. Below Tn both compounds exhibit a splitting in their transverse optical phonon spectra of approximately 10%. This behavior illustrates that, contrary to general assumption, the dynamic properties of MnO and NiO are substantially non-cubic.
Phonon dispersion of detwinned NiO is measured using inelastic x-ray scattering. It is found that, near the zone center, the energy of the transverse optical phonon mode polarized parallel to the antiferromagnetic order is ~1 meV lower than that of the mode polarized perpendicular to the order, at room temperature. This is explained via anisotropic polarization of the Ni and O atoms, as confirmed using a Berry's phase approach with first-principles calculations. Our explanation avoids an apparent contradiction in previous discussions focusing on Heisenberg interaction.
We report a neutron scattering study of bond-stretching phonons in La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4), a doped antiferromagnet in which the added holes order in diagonal stripes at 45 deg to the Ni-O bonds. For the highest-energy longitudinal optical mode along the bonds, a softening of 20% is observed between the Brillouin zone center and zone boundary. At 45 deg to the bonds, a splitting of the same magnitude is found across much of the zone. Surprisingly, the charge-ordering wave vector plays no apparent role in the anomalous dispersions. The implications for related anomalies in the cuprates are discu…
Nickel oxide (NiO) has been studied extensively for various applications ranging from electrochemistry to solar cells [1,2]. In recent years, NiO attracted much attention as an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator material for spintronic devices [3-10]. Understanding the spin - phonon coupling in NiO is a key to its functionalization, and enabling AF spintronics' promise of ultra-high-speed and low-power dissipation [11,12]. However, despite its status as an exemplary AF insulator and a benchmark material for the study of correlated electron systems, little is known about the spin - phonon interac…

Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron-phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Mag…
We present a general methodology that enables the disentanglement of the electronic and lattice contributions to the metal-insulator transition by building an energy landscape from numerical solutions of the equation of state. The methodology works with any electronic structure method that provides electronic expectation values at given atomic positions. Applying the theory to rare-earth perovskite nickelates ($R$NiO$_3$) and Ruddlesden-Popper calcium ruthenates (Ca$_2$RuO$_4$) in bulk, heterostructure and epitaxially strained thin film forms using equation of state results from density functi…
Recent STM experiments reveal niobium diselenide to support domains of striped (1Q) charge order side-by-side with its better-known triangular (3Q) phase, suggesting that small variations in local strain may induce a quantum phase transition between the two. We use a theoretical model of the charge order in NbSe$_2$, based on a strong momentum- and orbital-dependent electron-phonon coupling, to study the effect of uniaxial strain. We find that as little as $0.1\%$ anisotropic shift in phonon energies breaks the threefold symmetry in favor of a 1Q state, in agreement with the experimental resul…
We report Raman light-scattering and optical conductivity measurements on a single crystal of La(1.775)Sr(0.225)NiO(4) which exhibits incommensurate charge-stripe order. The extra phonon peaks induced by stripe order can be understood in terms of the energies of phonons that occur at the charge-order wave vector, Q_c. A strong Fano antiresonance for a Ni-O bond-stretching mode provides clear evidence for finite dynamical conductivity within the charge stripes.

The microstructures and interfaces of two-phase vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films play a key role in the design of spintronic device architectures and their multifunctional properties. Here, we show how the microstructures in self-assembled VAN thin films of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3:NiO (LSMO:NiO) can be effectively tuned from nano-granular to nano-columnar, and to nano-maze by controlling the number of laser shots from the two constituent phase targets in the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) film growth. The observed microstructural induced strain is found to significantly enhance the magn…

For La_(1 2/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4 -- a commensurately doped Mott-Hubbard system -- charge- and spin-ordering in a stripe phase has been investigated by phononic and magnetic Raman scattering. Formation of a superlattice and an opening of a pseudo-gap in the electron-hole excitation spectra as well as two types of double-spin excitations -- within the antiferromagnetic domain and across the domain wall -- are observed below the charge-ordering transition. The temperature dependence suggests that the spin ordering is driven by charge ordering and that fluctuating stripes persist above the ordering tra…
Modification of interatomic distances due to high pressure leads to exotic phenomena, including metallicity, superconductivity and magnetism, observed in materials not showing such properties in normal conditions. In two-dimensional crystals, such as graphene, atomic bond lengths can be modified by more that 10 percent by applying in-plane strain, i.e., without generating high pressure in the bulk. In this work, we study the strain-induced Mott transition on a honeycomb lattice by using computationally inexpensive techniques, including Gutzwiller Wave Function (GWF) and different variants of G…
We have used polarized Raman scattering to probe lattice vibrations and charge ordering in 12 nm thick, epitaxially strained PrNiO$_3$ films, and in superlattices of PrNiO$_3$ with the band-insulator PrAlO$_3$. A carefully adjusted confocal geometry was used to eliminate the substrate contribution to the Raman spectra. In films and superlattices under tensile strain, which undergo a metal-insulator transition upon cooling, the Raman spectra reveal phonon modes characteristic of charge ordering. These anomalous phonons do not appear in compressively strained films, which remain metallic at all …
MnO thin films with various thicknesses and strains were grown on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition, then characterized using x-ray diffraction and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Films grown on (001)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit homogenous biaxial compressive strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced. For that reason, the frequency of doubly-degenerate phonon increases with the strain, and splits below Néel temperature TN due to the magnetic-exchange interaction. Films grown on (110)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit a huge phonon splitting already at room temperatur…
We report a linear dependence of the phonon splitting Δωon the non-dominant exchange coupling constant J_{nd} in the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, NiO, and in the frustrated antiferromagnetic oxide spinels CdCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4. It directly confirms the theoretical prediction of an exchange induced splitting of the zone-centre optical phonon for the monoxides and explains the magnitude and the change of sign of the phonon splitting on changing the sign of the non-dominant exchange also in the frustrated oxide spinels. The experimentally found linear relati…
