We have studied the effects of band filling and bandwidth control on the chemical potential in perovskite manganites $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$ ($R$ : rare earth, $A$ : alkaline earth) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. A suppression of the doping-dependent chemical potential shift was observed in and around the CE-type charge-ordered composition range, indicating that there is charge self-organization such as stripe formation or its fluctuations. As a function of bandwidth, we observed a downward chemical potential shift with increasing bandwidth due to the reduction of the orthorhombic distortion. After subtracting the latter contribution, we found an upward chemical potential shift in the ferromagnetic metallic region $0.3<x<0.5$, which we attribute to the enhancement of double-exchange interaction involving the Jahn-Teller-split $e_g$ band.
A recent, major, puzzle in the core-level photoemission spectra of doped manganites is the observation of a 1-2 eV wide shoulder with intensity varying with temperature T as the square of the magnetization over a T scale of order 200K, an order of magnitude less than electronic energies. This is addressed and resolved here, by extending a recently proposed two electron fluid l-b model for these systems to include core-hole effects. The shoulder arises from a rapid redistribution of e_g electron density, as a function of T, between the highly localized (l) and band-like (b) states. Furthermore,…
By using laboratory x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES) at a synchrotron facility, we report an empirical semi-quantitative relationship between the valence/core-level x-ray photoemission spectral weight and electrical conductivity in La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} as a function of x. In the Mn 2p_{3/2} HX-PES spectra, we observed the shoulder structure due to the Mn^{3+} well-screened state. However, the intensity at x=0.8 was too small to explain its higher electrical conductivity than x=0.0, which confirms our recent analysis on the Mn 2p_{3/2} X…
Photoemission data taken with hard x-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the bilayered, colossal magnetoresistant manganite La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (LSMO) with 0.30<x<0.50 are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard x-ray excitation it is shown that the core level footprint of the electronic structure of the LSMO cleavage surface is identical to that of the bulk. Furthermore, by comparing the core level shift of the different elements as a function of doping level x, it is shown that microscopic phase separation is unlikely to occur for this particular manga…
We report the bulk sensitive Hard X-ray (hv=5.95keV) core level photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the intrinsic electronic structure of strained (La0.85Ba0.15)MnO3 thin films. In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrained film with 300nm thickness. Cluster calculations revealed that the intensity corresponded to the density of the state at the Fermi level relating to the magnitude of the ferromagnetic order. The satel…
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d $\to$ 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions…
Motivated by the recent optical and photoemission measurements on half-metallic ferromagnetic three-dimensional manganites, we combine a tight-binding fit of the one-particle bandstructure with the dynamical mean-field theory, which treats the dynamical orbital correlations and the combination of Jahn-Teller and doping-induced disorder on the same footing. We show how all of the above effects are necessary to obtain good semiquantitative agreement with experimental features. As applications, we show how modest external magnetic fields drive drastic changes in the optical spectrum, demonstratin…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data for the bilayer manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 show that, upon lowering the temperature below the Curie point, a coherent polaronic metallic groundstate emerges very rapidly with well defined quasiparticles which track remarkably well the electrical conductivity, consistent with macroscopic transport properties. Our data suggest that the mechanism leading to the insulator-to-metal transition in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 can be regarded as a polaron coherence condensation process acting in concert with the Double Exchange interaction.
The ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic interaction between localized spins is a minimal description of the competing kinetic t and magnetic K energy terms which generate the rich physics of manganite systems. Motivated by the discovery in one dimension of homogeneous ``island phases'', we consider the possibility of analogous phases in higher dimensions. We characterize the phases present at commensurate fillings, and consider in detail the effects of phase separation in all filling and parameter regimes. We deduce that island and flux phases are stable for intermediat…
We deduce a model relevant for the anomalous metallic state of Sr doped manganites at low temperatures within the ferromagnetic phase. It provides a natural explanation to several anomalous features observed experimentally, such as the vanishing Drude contribution in optical conductivity, the pseudo-gap in the density of states, an the unusual dispersion observed in photoemission.
We have analyzed different correlation functions in a realistic spin-orbital model for half-doped manganites. Using a finite-temperature diagonalization technique the CE phase was found in the charge-ordered phase in the case of small antiferromagnetic interactions between $t_{2g}$ electrons. It is shown that a key ingredient responsible for stabilization of the CE-type spin and orbital-ordered state is the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) interaction between next-nearest Mn$^{+3}$ neighbors mediated by the breathing mode distortion of Mn$^{+4}$ octahedra and displacements of Mn$^{+4}$ ions. The t…
By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the bilayer colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite, $La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7}$, we provide the complete mapping of the Fermi level spectral weight topology. Clear and unambiguous bilayer splitting of the in-plane 3d$_{x^2-y^2}$ band, mapped throughout the Brillouin zone, and the full mapping of the 3d$_{3z^2-r^2}$ band are reported. Peculiar doping and temperature dependencies of these bands imply that as transition from the ferromagnetic metallic phase approaches, either as a function of doping or temperature, coherence along …
The correlated-band theory implemented as a combination of the local-density approximation with the dynamical mean-field theory is applied to PuO2. An insulating electronic structure, consistent with the experimental valence-band photoemission spectra, is obtained. The calculations yield a nonmagnetic ground state that is characterized by a noninteger filling of the plutonium 5f shell. The noninteger filling as well as the satellites appearing in the 4f core-level photoemission spectra originate in a sizable hybridization of the 5f shell with the 2p states of oxygen.
Magnon self energy due to spin-charge coupling is calculated for the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model using a diagrammatic expansion scheme. Systematically incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections, the expansion scheme explicitly preserves the continuous spin rotation symmetry and hence the Goldstone mode. Due to a near cancellation of the correlation-induced quantum correction terms at intermediate coupling and optimal band filling relevant for ferromagnetic manganites, the renormalized magnon energies for the correlated FKLM are nearly i…
Photoemission spectra of the paramagnetic insulating (PI) phase of (V_0.972Cr_0.028)_2O_3, taken in ultra high vacuum up to the unusually high temperature (T) of 800 K, reveal a property unique to the Mott-Hubbard (MH) insulator and not observed previously. With increasing T the MH gap is filled by spectral weight transfer, in qualitative agreement with high-T theoretical calculations combining dynamical mean field theory and band theory in the local density approximation.
In this study, we report the observation of a pseudogap associated with the insulator-metal transition in compositions of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ system with no charge ordering. Our valence band photoemission study shows that the observed shifts in the near Fermi level density of states are abrupt at the Curie transtion and occur over an energy scale of $\sim$ 1 eV, strongly suggesting that the charge-ordering gap observed earlier in other manganites and the pseudogap observed here may indeed have same origin. These results could be understood within the framework of models based on electronic…
We derive an effective Hamiltonian that takes into account the quantum nature of phonons and models cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the adiabatic regime and at strong electron-phonon coupling in one dimension. Our approach involves mapping a strong-coupling problem to a weak-coupling one by using a duality transformation. Subsequently, a sixth-order perturbation theory is employed in the polaronic frame of reference where the small parameter is inversely (directly) proportional to the coupling (adiabaticity). We study charge and orbital order in ferromagnetic manganite chains and address the…
Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we report the first band dispersions and distinct features of the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic metallic phase of the prototypical metal-insulator transition material V$_2$O$_3$. Along the $c$-axis we observe both an electron pocket and a triangular hole-like FS topology, showing that both V 3$d$ $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^π$ states contribute to the FS. These results challenge the existing correlation-enhanced crystal field splitting theoretical explanation for the transition mechanism and pave the way for the solution of this myste…
We report on an a $μ$SR and $^{55}$Mn NMR investigation of the magnetic order parameter as a function of temperature in the optimally doped La$_{5/8}$(Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ and in the underdoped La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ metallic manganite families. The study is aimed at unraveling the effect of lattice distortions, implicitly controlled by the Ca-Sr isoelectronic substitution, from that of hole doping $x$ on the Curie temperature $T_c$ and the order of the magnetic transition. At optimal doping, the transitions are second order at all $y$ values, inclu…
The photoemission spectrum and the specific heat are studied in the Hubbard model of small clusters including orbital degeneracy. We focus on the degeneracy and valence dependence in the limit of a large Coulomb interaction. For integer valence, it is found that the degeneracy increases the width of the photoemission spectrum and it reduces the contribution from the charge degrees of freedom to the specific heat. A deviation from integer valence reduces the width of the photoemission spectrum.
The widely used Double-Exchange model for manganites is shown to support various "striped" phases at filling fractions 1/n (n=3, 4, 5...), in the previously unexplored regime of narrow bandwidth and small Jahn-Teller coupling. Working in two dimensions, our main result is that these stripes can be individually spin flipped without a physically relevant change in the energy, i.e., we find a large groundstate manifold with nearly degenerate energies. The two-dimensional spin system thus displays an unexpected dynamically generated dimensional reduction into decoupled one-dimensional stripes, eve…
An improved formulation of the one-step model of photoemission from crystal surfaces is proposed which overcomes different limitations of the original theory. Considering the results of an electronic-structure calculation, the electronic (one-particle) potential and the (many-body) self-energy, as given quantities, we derive explicit expressions for the dipole transition-matrix elements. The theory is formulated within a spin-polarized, relativistic framework for general nonspherical and space-filling one-particle potentials and general nonlocal, complex and energy-dependent self-energies. It …
We calculate the photoemission spectral function of the one-dimensional Hubbard model away from half filling using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group method. An approach for calculating momentum-dependent quantities in finite open chains is presented. Comparison with exact Bethe Ansatz results demonstrates the unprecedented accuracy of our method. Our results show that the photoemission spectrum of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor TTF-TCNQ provides evidence for spin-charge separation on the scale of the conduction band width.
The exact nature of the low temperature electronic phase of the manganite materials family, and hence the origin of their colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) effect, is still under heavy debate. By combining new photoemission and tunneling data, we show that in La{2-2x}Sr{1+2x}Mn2O7 the polaronic degrees of freedom win out across the CMR region of the phase diagram. This means that the generic ground state is that of a system in which strong electron-lattice interactions result in vanishing coherent quasi-particle spectral weight at the Fermi level for all locations in k-space. The incoherence of …
Density waves are inherent to the phase diagrams of materials that exhibit unusual, and sometimes extraordinarily useful properties, such as superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. While the pure charge density waves (CDW) are well described by an itinerant approach, where electrons are treated as waves propagating through the crystal, the charge-orbital ordering (COO) is usually explained by a local approach, where the electrons are treated as localized on the atomic sites. Here we show that in the half-doped manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 (LSMO) the electronic susceptibility, calculated …
The electron doping of undoped high-$T_c$ cuprates via the transfer of charge from manganites (or other oxides) using heterostructure geometries is here theoretically discussed. This possibility is mainly addressed via a detailed analysis of photoemission and diffusion voltage experiments, which locate the Fermi level of manganites above the bottom of the upper Hubbard band of some cuprate parent compounds. A diagram with the relative location of Fermi levels and gaps for several oxides is presented. The procedure discussed here is generic, allowing for the qualitative prediction of the charge…
Electronic structures of very dilute Cr- or Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}MnO_{3} (NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using the Mn and Cr 2p -> 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. The Cr 3d states with t^3_{2g} configuration are at ~ 1.3 eV below E_F, and the Cr e_{g} states do not participate in the formation of the band near E_F. Cr- and Ru-induced ferromagnetism and insulator-to-metal transitions can be understood with …
Perovskite manganite thin films, $Pr_{0.55}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_y)_{0.45}MnO_3$, have been studied using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy in order to clarify the consequence of the competition between ferromagnetic metal (FM) and charge-orbital ordered insulator (COOI). Films with $y$ = 0.40 undergo uniform paramagnetic insulator to FM transition. On the other hand, in films with $y$ = 0.25, the composition near the bicritical point, phase separation of COOI and FM domains is indicated by the spectral change below 125 K. Interestingly, between 50 K and 70 K, the visible laser illumination transfers the…
We present angle-resolved photoemission studies of (La1-zPrz)2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 with x=0.4 and z=0.1,0.2 and 0.4 along with density functional theory calculations and x-ray scattering data. Our results show that the bilayer splitting in the ferromagnetic metallic phase of these materials is small, if not completely absent. The charge carriers are therefore confined to a single MnO2-layer, which in turn results in a strongly nested Fermi surface. In addition to this, the spectral function also displays clear signatures of an electronic ordering instability well below the Fermi level. The increase …
In a recent letter, Pothuizen et al. reported angle-resolved photoemission data on the single-layer insulating cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2. This comment addresses the issue whether it is possible to deduce an accurate value for the O 2p hopping integral $t_{pp}$ from these experiments, and also cautions against drawing conclusions concerning scattering mechanisms in the CuO_2 plane from a line-width analysis.
We propose angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (AR-2PPES) as a technique to detect the location of the bottom of the upper Hubbard band (UHB) in two-dimensional insulating cuprates. The AR-2PPES spectra are numerically calculated for small Hubbard clusters. When the pump photon excites an electron from the lower Hubbard band, the bottom of the UHB is less clear, but when an electron in the nonbonding oxygen band is excited, the bottom of the UHB can be identified clearly, accompanied with additional spectra originated from the spin-wave excitation at half filling.
Polarization-controlled synchrotron radiation was used to map the electronic structure of buried conducting interfaces of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ in a resonant angle-resolved photoemission experiment. A strong dependence on the light polarization of the Fermi surface and band dispersions is demonstrated, highlighting the distinct Ti 3d orbitals involved in 2D conduction. Samples with different 2D doping levels were prepared and measured by photoemission, revealing different band occupancies and Fermi surface shapes. A direct comparison between the photoemission measurements and advanced first-prin…
The nature of metallicity and the level of electronic correlations in the antiferromagnetically ordered parent compounds are two important open issues for the iron-based superconductivity. We perform a temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Fe1.02Te, the parent compound for iron chalcogenide superconductors. Deep in the antiferromagnetic state, the spectra exhibit a "peak-dip-hump" line shape associated with two clearly separate branches of dispersion, characteristics of polarons seen in manganites and lightly-doped cuprates. As temperature increases towards t…
Studying the nature and consequences of electron-phonon interaction in manganites is an area of intense ongoing research. Here, in an attempt to model charge and orbital ordering in manganites displaying C-type antiferromaganetism, we study cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in two-band one-dimensional chains in the regimes of both strong and weak electron-phonon couplings. These chains exhibit orbital ferromagnetism with only $d_{z^2}$ orbitals being occupied. At strong coupling and in the antiadiabatic regime, using a controlled analytic nonperturbative treatment that accounts for the quantum na…
We have performed a photoemission study of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_{3+y/2}$ near the filling-control metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of hole doping. Mass renormalization deduced from the spectral weight and the width of the quasi-particle band around the chemical potential $μ$ is compared with that deduced from the electronic specific heat. The result implies that, near the MIT, band narrowing occurs strongly in the vicinity of $μ$. Spectral weight transfer occurs from the coherent to the incoherent parts upon antiferromagnetic ordering, which we associate with the partial gap open…
In correlated electron materials, electrons often self-organize and form a variety of patterns with potential ordering of charges, spins, and orbitals, which are believed to be closely connected to many novel properties of these materials including superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions, and the CMR effect. How these real-space patterns affect the conductivity and other properties of materials (which are usually described in momentum space) is one of the major challenges of modern condensed matter physics. Moreover, although the presence of static stripes is indisputable, the existence…
We have studied the electronic structure of $β$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$, which becomes a superconductor under pressure, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Clear band dispersions is observed only along the chain direction, indicating the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) electronic structure. The spectra of the V 3d band are dominated by a Gaussian-like broad feature at $\sim$ 1 eV below the Fermi level ($E_F$) with negligible intensity at $E_F$, which we attribute to strong electron-phonon coupling as in other 1D polaronic metals. In the momentum space, the spectra show a maximum intensity a…
Complexity in the hybridization physics revealed by depth-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of single crystalline novel Kondo lattice systems, CeCuX$_2$ (X = As/Sb)
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the T'-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also post-growth reduction annealing is necessary. In the case of thin films, however, well-designed reduction annealing alone without Ce doping can induce superconductivity in the T'-type cuprates. In order to unveil the origin of superconductivity in the Ce-undoped T'-type cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopies on superconducting and non-superconducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=$ 0, 0.15, and 0.19…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaCr$_2$As$_2$, which has the same crystal structure as BaFe$_2$As$_2$, a parent compound of Fe-based superconductors. We determine the Fermi surface of this material and its band dispersion over 5 eV of binding energy. Very moderate band renormalization (1.35) is observed for only two bands. We attribute this small renormalization to enhanced direct exchange as compared to Fe in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and to a larger contribution of the $e_g$ orbitals in the composition of the bands forming the Fermi surface, leading to an effec…
We present an exact diagonalization study of the single particle spectral function in the 1D and 2D t-J model. By studying the scaling properties with J and t we find a simple building pattern in 1D and show that every spectral feature can be uniquely assigned by a spinon and holon momentum. We find two types of low energy excitations: a band with energy scale J and high spectral weight disperses upwards in the interior part of the Brillouin zone and reaches E_F at k_F, and a band with energy scale t and low spectral weight disperses downwards in the outer part of the zone, touching E_F at 3k_…
The local-density approximation combined with the dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) is applied to the paramagnetic phase of light actinide dioxides: UO2, NpO2, and PuO2. The calculated band gaps and the valence-band electronic structure are in a very good agreement with the optical absorption experiments as well as with the photoemission spectra. The hybridization of the actinide 5f shell with the 2p states of oxygen is found to be relatively large, it increases the filling of the 5f orbitals from the nominal ionic configurations with two, three, and four electrons to nearly half-integer …
Photo-excitation is a very powerful way to instantaneously drive a material into a novel quantum state without any fabrication, and variable ultrafast techniques have been developed to observe how electron-, lattice-, and spin-degrees of freedom change. One of the most spectacular phenomena is photo-induced superconductivity, and it has been suggested in cuprates that the transition temperature Tc can be enhanced from original Tc with significant lattice modulations. Here we show another photo-induced high-Tc superconducting state in the iron-based superconductor FeSe with semi-metallic hole a…
We report the first observation of changes in the electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) across the filling-control metal-insulator (MI) transition by means of in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of epitaxial thin films. The Fermi surface gradually disappears near the MI transition by transferring the spectral weight from the coherent band near the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) to the lower Hubbard band, whereas a pseudogap behavior also exists in the ARPES spectra in the close vicinity of $E_{F}$ for the metallic LSMO. These results indicate that the spectral…
The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_{3}$ have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not cha…
We have performed photoemission and soft x-ray absorption studies of pyrochlore-type Ru oxides, namely, the filling-control system Sm$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ and the bandwidth-control system Sm$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$, which show insulator-to-metal transition with increasing Ca and Bi concentration, respectively. Core levels and the O 2$p$ valence band in Sm$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ show almost the same amount of monotonous upward energy shifts with Ca concentration, which indicates that the chemical potential is shifted downward due to hole doping. The Ru 4$d$ band in Sm$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$Ru$_2$…
We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the Ni-based superconductor SrNi$_2$As$_2$. Electron and hole Fermi surface pockets are observed, but their different shapes and sizes lead to very poor nesting conditions. The experimental electronic band structure of SrNi$_2$As$_2$ is in good agreement with first-principles calculations after a slight renormalization (by a factor 1.1), confirming the picture of Hund's exchange-dominated electronic correlations decreasing with increasing filling of the $3d$ shell in the Fe-, Co- and Ni-based compounds. These findings emphasize…
We investigated \LAO\ - \STO\ heterointerfaces grown either in oxygen rich or poor atmosphere by soft x-ray spectroscopy. Resonant photoemission across the Ti L$_{2,3}$ absorption edge of the valence band and Ti 2p core level spectroscopy directly monitor the impact of oxygen treatment upon the electronic structure. Two types of Ti$^{3+}$ related charge carriers are identified. One is located at the Fermi energy and related to the filling of the \STO\ conduction band. It appears for low oxygen pressure only. The other one is centered at E$_{B}$ $\approx$ 1 eV and independent of the oxygen pres…
Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is a magnetic Weyl semimetal, in which ferromagnetic ordering at 177K is predicted to stabilize Weyl points. We perform temperature and spatial dependent angle--resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements through the Curie temperature ($T_c$), which show large band shifts and renormalization concomitant with the onset of magnetism. We argue that Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ evolves from a Mott ferromagnet below $T_c$ to a correlated metallic state above $T_c$. To understand the magnetism, we derive a tight-binding model of Co-$3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals on the kagome lattice. At the fi…
The spectral function $A({\bf q}, ω)$ of doped $t-J$ ladders is presented on clusters with up to $2 \times 20$ sites at zero temperature applying a recently developed technique that uses up to $\sim 6 \times 10^6$ rung-basis states. Similarities with photoemission results for the 2D cuprates are observed, such as the existence of a gap at $(π,0)$ near half-filling (caused by hole pair formation) and flat bands in its vicinity. These features should be observable in ARPES experiments on ladders. The main result of the paper is the nontrivial evolution of the spectral function from a narrow band…
The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where t…
