We formulate a tropical analogue of Grothendieck's section conjecture: that for every stable graph G of genus g>2, and every field k, the generic curve with reduction type G over k satisfies the section conjecture. We prove many cases of this conjecture. In so doing we produce many examples of curves satisfying the section conjecture over fields of geometric interest, and then over p-adic fields and number fields via a Chebotarev argument. We construct two Galois cohomology classes o_1 and o_2, which obstruct the existence of pi_1-sections and hence of rational points. The first is an abelian obstruction, closely related to the period of a curve and to a cohomology class on the moduli space of curves M_g studied by Morita. The second is a 2-nilpotent obstruction and appears to be new. We study the degeneration of these classes via topological techniques, and we produce examples of surface bundles over surfaces where these classes obstruct sections. We then use these constructions to produce curves over p-adic fields and number fields where each class obstructs pi_1-sections and hence rational points. Among our geometric results are a new proof of the section conjecture for the generic curve of genus g>2, and a proof of the section conjecture for the generic curve of even genus with a rational divisor class of degree one (where the obstruction to the existence of a section is genuinely non-abelian).
This paper deals with Arakelov vector bundles over an arithmetic curve, i.e. over the set of places of a number field. The main result is that for each semistable bundle E, there is a bundle F such that $E \otimes F$ has at least a certain slope, but no global sections. It is motivated by an analogous theorem of Faltings for vector bundles over algebraic curves and contains the Minkowski-Hlawka theorem on sphere packings as a special case. The proof uses an adelic version of Siegel's mean value formula.
This short paper shows that a projective bundle over a smooth variety with a section can be uniquely recovered from the embedding of the section in its second infinitesimal neighborhood within the bundle.
In this paper we study the positivity of the cotangent bundle of projective manifolds. We conjecture that the cotangent bundle is pseudoeffective if and only the manifold has non-zero symmetric differentials. We confirm this conjecture for most projective surfaces that are not of general type.
We propose a new method, using deformation theory, to study the maximal rank conjecture. For line bundles of extremal degree, which can be viewed as the first case to test the conjecture, we prove that maximal rank conjecture holds by our new method.
In this note we give a complete description of all the hyperplane section of the projective bundle associated to the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^2$ under its natural embedding in $\mathbb{P}^7.$ As an application one obtains a description of all possible deformations, in $\text{SL_3(\mathbb{C}}/B,$ of the co-dimension one sub-scheme which is the union of two fundamental Schubert divisors.
In this paper we construct new examples of stable bundles of rank 2 of small degree with 4 sections on a smooth irreducible curve of maximal Clifford index. The corresponding Brill-Noether loci have negative expected dimension of arbitrarily large absolute value.
In this work we give a method for computing sections of homogeneous vector bundles on any rational homogeneous variety G/P of type ADE. Our main tool is the equivalence of categories between homogeneous vector bundles on G/P and finite dimensional representations of a given quiver with relations. Our result generalizes the work of Ottaviani and Rubei [OR06].
We prove an $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type for extending holomorphic sections of line bundles from a subvariety which is given as a maximal log-canonical center of a pair and is of general codimension in a projective variety. Our method of proof indicates that such a setting is the most natural one in a sense, for general $L^2$ extension of line bundle sections.
Consider the scheme B_{2,L}^k of stable vector bundles of rank two and fixed determinant L which have at least k sections. Under suitable numerical conditions and for generic L, we show the existence of a component of the expected dimension of B_{2,L}^k.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. In this paper we use conic bundles to obtain correct lower bounds or a wide class of surfaces over number fields for which the conjecture is still far from being proved. For example, we obtain the conjectured lower bound of Manin's conjecture for any del Pezzo surface whose Picard rank is sufficiently large, or for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces after possibly an extension of the ground field of small degree.
A famous conjecture attributed to Kodaira asks whether any compact Kaehler manifold can be approximated by projective manifolds. We confirm this conjecture on projectivized direct sums of three line bundles on three-dimensional complex tori which appears rather surprising in view of expected dimensions of certain families of tori. We also discuss possible counter examples.
We consider the locus of sections of a vector bundle on a projective scheme that vanish in higher dimension than expected. We show that after applying a high enough twist, any maximal component of this locus consists entirely of sections vanishing along a subscheme of minimal degree. In fact, we will give a more refined description of this locus, which will allow us to deduce its limit in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
In this paper we study holomorphic vector bundles with singular Hermitian metrics whose curvature are Hermitian matrix currents. We obtain an extension theorem for holomorphic jet sections of nef holomorphic vector bundle on compact Kähler manifolds. Using it we prove that Fano manifolds with strong Griffiths nef tangent bundles are rational homogeneous spaces.
For $C$ a stable curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$, and $\mathcal{D}$ the determinant of cohomology line bundle on $\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C)$, we show the section ring for the pair $(\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C), \mathcal{D})$ is finitely generated. Three applications are given.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>2$. We prove that any rank $3$ nilpotent semistable Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ on $X$ is a strongly semistable Higgs bundle. This gives a partially affirmative answer to a conjecture of Lan-Sheng-Zuo \cite{LanShengZuo12ii}\footnotemark[1]. In addition, we prove a tensor product theorem for strongly semistable Higgs bundles with $p$ satisfying some bounds (Theorem \ref{TensorTheorem}). From this we reprove a tensor theorem for semistable Higgs bundles on the condition that the Lan-Sheng-Zuo c…
We consider a class of tautological top intersection products on the moduli space of stable pairs consisting of semistable vector bundles together with N sections on a smooth complex projective curve C. We show that when N is large, these intersection numbers can equally be computed on the Grothendieck Quot scheme of coherent sheaf quotients of the rank N trivial sheaf on C. The result has applications to the calculation of the intersection theory of the moduli space of semistable bundles on C.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension 4 and let L be an ample line bundle on X. In this paper, we study a natural number m such that h^{0}(m(K_{X}+L))>0 for any polarized 4-folds (X,L) with κ(K_{X}+L)\geq 0.
In this short note, we will gives several remarks on rational points of varieties whose cotangent bundles are generated by global sections. For example, we will show that if the sheaf of differentials of a projective variety X over a number field k is ample and generated by global sections, then the set of k-rational points of X is finite.
The Hartshorne conjecture predicts that two submanifolds X and Y in a projective manifold Z with ample normal bundles meets as soon as dim X + dim Y is at least dim Z. We mostly assume slightly stronger that one of the normal bundles is positive in the sense of Griffiths. We observe that the conjecture holds generically, relate it to question on cones of cycles and verify it in various cases.
We establish the equidistribution of zeros of random holomorphic sections of powers of a semipositive singular Hermitian line bundle, with an estimate of the convergence speed.
Let $X$ be a Fano manifold which is the zero scheme of a general global section $s$ in an irreducible homogenous vector bundle over a Grassmannian. We prove that the restriction of the Plücker embedding embeds $X$ projectively normal, and that every small deformation of $X$ comes from a deformation of the section $s$. These results are strengthened in the case of Fano 4-folds.
Let $S \subset \mathbb{P}^g$ be a smooth $K3$ surface of degree $2g-2$, $g \geq 3$. We classify all the cases for which $h^0(\mathcal{N}_{S/\mathbb{P}^g}(-2)) \neq 0$ and the cases for which $h^0(\mathcal{N}_{S/\mathbb{P}^g}(-2)) < h^0(\mathcal{N}_{C/\mathbb{P}^{g-1}}(-2))$ for $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{g-1}$ a general canonical curve section of $S$.
Let $f:X\to S$ be an extremal contraction from a threefolds with terminal singularities onto a surface (so called Mori conic bundle). We study some particular cases of such contractions: quotients of usual conic bundles and index two contractions. Assuming Reid's general elephants conjecture we also obtain a rough classification. We present many examples.
Let $M$ be a compact, holomorphic symplectic Kaehler manifold, and $L$ a non-trivial line bundle admitting a metric of semi-positive curvature. We show that some power of $L$ is effective. This result is related to the hyperkaehler SYZ conjecture, which states that such a manifold admits a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, if $L$ is not big.
We introduce tropical vector bundles, morphisms and rational sections of these bundles and define the pull-back of a tropical vector bundle and of a rational section along a morphism. Afterwards we use the bounded rational sections of a tropical vector bundle to define the Chern classes of this bundle and prove some basic properties of Chern classes. Finally we give a complete classification of all vector bundles on an elliptic curve up to isomorphisms.
We prove de Cataldo-Hausel-Migliorini's P=W conjecture in arbitrary rank for parabolic Higgs bundles labeled by the affine Dynkin diagrams $\tilde{A}_0$, $\tilde{D}_4$, $\tilde{E}_6$, $\tilde{E}_7$, and $\tilde{E}_8$. Our proof relies on the study of the tautological classes on the Hilbert scheme of points on an elliptic surface with respect to the perverse filtration.
Let E be an ample vector bundle of rank r on a complex projective manifold X such that there exists a section $s \in Γ(\cal E)$ whose zero locus Z = (s = 0) is a smooth submanifold of the expected dimension dim X - r: = n -r. Assume that Z is not minimal; we investigate the hypothesis under which the extremal contractions of Z can be lifted to X. Finally we study in detail the cases in which Z is a scroll, a quadric bundle or a del Pezzo fibration.
In this article we prove, in a simple way, that for any complete toric variety, and for any Cartier divisor, the ring of global sections of multiples of the line bundle associated to the divisor is finitely generated.
In this paper we study the distribution of successive minima of global sections of powers of a metrized ample line bundle on a variety over a number field. We develop criteria for there to exist a measure on the real line describing the limiting behavior of this distribution as one considers increasing powers of the bundle. When this measure exists, we develop methods for determining it explicitly. We present applications to the distribution of Petersson norms of cusp forms of increasing weight for SL_2(Z) and to the minimal sup norm of algebraic functions on adelic subsets of curves arising i…
If a finite group acts holomorphically on a pair (X,L), where X is a complex projective manifold and L a line bundle on it, for every k the space of holomorphic global section of the k-th power of L splits equivariantly according to the irreducible representations of G. We consider the asymptotic growth of these summands, under various positivity conditions on L. The methods apply also to the context of almost complex quantization.
The classifying space BDiff$(S_{g,n})$ of the orientation-preserving diffeomorphism group of the surface $S_{g,n}$ of genus $g>1$ with $n$ ordered marked points has a universal bundle \[ S_g \to \text{UDiff}(S_{g,n})\xrightarrowπ\text{BDiff}(S_{g,n}). \] The fixed $n$ points provide $n$ sections $s_i$ of $π$. In this paper we prove a conjecture of R. Hain that any section of $π$ is homotopic to some $s_i$. Let $\text{PConf}_n(S_g)$ be the ordered $n$-tuples of distinct points on $S_g$. As part of the proof, we prove a result of independent interest: any surjective homomorphism $π_1(\text{PConf…
We give a new proof of Kollár's conjecture on the pushforward of the dualizing sheaf twisted by a variation of Hodge structure. This conjecture was settled by M. Saito via mixed Hodge modules and has applications in the investigation of Albanese maps. Our technique is the $L^2$-method and we give a concrete construction and proofs of the conjecture. The $L^2$ point of view allows us to generalize Kollár's conjecture to the context of non-abelian Hodge theory.
We propose, motivate and give evidence for a relation between the $\mathcal D$-modules of the quantum cohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold $X$ and a projective bundle $\PP(\oplus L_i)$ over $X$.
Consider the Fano surface of a conic bundle embedded in $\mathbb P^5$. Let $i$ denote the natural involution acting on this surface. In this note we provide an obstruction to the identity action of the involution on the group of algebraically trivial zero cycles modulo rational equivalence on the surface.
Let R be a regular local ring, containing a finite field. Let G be a reductive group scheme over R. We prove that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial, if it is trivial over the fraction field of R. If the regular local ring R contains an infinite field this result is proved in [FP]. Thus the conjecture is true for regular local rings containing a field.
Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be the ring of integers in an algebraic number field $K$ and let $S:=\operatorname{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_K)$. Let $T_0,\ldots,T_n$ be regular schemes of finite type over $S$ and let $X$ be a scheme of finite type over $T_n$ with a stratification of closed subschemes (a generalized cellular decomposition) \[ \emptyset=X_{-1} \subseteq X_0 \subseteq \cdots \subseteq X_{n-1} \subseteq X_n:=X \] with $X_i-X_{i-1}=E_i$ where $E_i$ is a vector bundle of rank $d_i$ on $T_i$. We prove that if the Beilinson-Soule vanishing conjecture and Soule conjecture holds for $T_i$ it follows the s…
Our interest is a regularity of a minimal singular metric of a line bundle. One main conclusion of our general result in this paper is the existence of continuous Hermitian metrics with semi-positive curvatures on the so-called Zariski's example of a line bundle defined over the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at some twelve points. This is an example of a line bundle which is nef, big, not semi-ample, and whose section ring is not finitely generated. We generalize this result to the higher dimensional case when the stable base locus of a line bundle is a smooth hypersurface with a holomorphic tubul…
We first present a Skoda type division theorem for holomorphic sections of line bundles on a projective variety which is essentially the most general, compared to previous ones. It is derived from Varolin's theorem as a corollary. Then we revisit Geometric Effective Nullstellensatz and observe that even this general Skoda division is far from sufficient to yield stronger Geometric Effective Nullstellensatz such as `vanishing order $1$ division', which could be used for finite generation of section rings by the basic finite generation lemma. To resolve this problem, we develop a notion of pseud…
This paper contains results on stable bundles of rank 2 with space of sections of dimension 4 on a smooth irreducible projective algebraic curve $C$. There is a known lower bound on the degree for the existence of such bundles; the main result of the paper is a geometric criterion for this bound to be attained. For a general curve $C$ of genus 10, we show that the bound cannot be attained, but that there exist Petri curves of this genus for which the bound is sharp. We interpret the main results for various curves and in terms of Clifford indices and coherent systems.
Let $X$ be any smooth simply connected projective surface. We consider some moduli space of pure sheaves of dimension one on $X$, i.e. $\mhu$ with $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0)$ and $L$ an effective line bundle on $X$, together with a series of determinant line bundles associated to $r[\mo_X]-n[\mo_{pt}]$ in Grothendieck group of $X$. Let $g_L$ denote the arithmetic genus of curves in the linear system $\ls$. For $g_L\leq2$, we give a upper bound of the dimensions of sections of these line bundles by restricting them to a generic projective line in $\ls$. Our result gives, together with Göttsche's computati…
A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov which predicts that, if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that $X$ has canonical singularities and $Z$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein, then $Z$ is always $\frac{1}{2}$-lc, and the multiplicities of the fibers over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$. Both values $\frac{1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative …
In a series of papers [Pan0], [Pan1], [Pan2], [Pan3] we give a detailed and better structured proof of the Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture for semi-local regular rings containing a finite field. The outline of the proof is the same as in [P1],[P2],[P3]. If the semi-local regular ring contains an infinite field, then the conjecture is proved in [FP]. Thus the conjecture is true for regular local rings containing a field. A proof of Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal bundles over a semi-local regular ring containing an arbitrary field is given in [Pan3]. That proof is heavily based on …
In a previous paper we have constructed a compactification $KGl_n$ of the general linear group $Gl_n$, which in many respects is analogous to the so called wonderful compactification of adjoint semisimple algebraic groups as studied by De Concini and Procesi. In particular there is an action of $G=Gl_n\times Gl_n$ on this compactification. In this paper we show how the space of global section of an arbitrary $G$-linearized line bundle on $KGl_n$ decomposes canonically into a direct sum of simple $G$-modules which are themselves given as the spaces of global sections of line bundles on the prod…
The Prym-Green Conjecture predicts that the resolution of a generic n-torsion paracanonical curve of every genus is natural. The conjecture has mostly been studied so far for level 2, that is, for Prym-canonical curves. Using a construction of Barth and Verra that realizes torsion bundles on sections of special K3 surfaces, we prove the Prym-Green Conjecture for curves of odd genus g and torsion bundles of sufficiently high order with respect to g. We also give partial results in even genus. In the process, we confirm the expectation of Barth and Verra concerning the number of curves in a fixe…
We construct canonical non-vanishing global sections of powers of the Hodge bundle on each Ekedahl-Oort stratum of a Hodge type Shimura variety. In particular we recover the quasi-affineness of the Ekedahl-Oort strata. In the projective case, this gives a very short proof of non-emptiness of Ekedahl-Oort strata. It follows that the Newton strata are also nonempty, by a result of S.Nie. We also deduce the fact that the $μ$-ordinary locus is determined by the Ekedahl-Oort strata of its image by any embedding.
Let X be a smooth, connected, projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. In "Flat vector bundles and the fundamental group in non-zero characteristics" (Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup. Pisa Cl. Sci. (4) 2 (1975)), Gieseker conjectured that every stratified bundle (i.e. every O-coherent D-module) on X is trivial, if and only if the étale fundamental group of X is trivial. This was proven by Esnault-Mehta in "Simply connected projective manifolds in characteristic p> 0 have no nontrivial stratified bundles" (Invent. Math. 181 (2010)). Building on the classical situa…
