In this note we give a complete description of all the hyperplane section of the projective bundle associated to the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^2$ under its natural embedding in $\mathbb{P}^7.$ As an application one obtains a description of all possible deformations, in $\text{SL_3(\mathbb{C}}/B,$ of the co-dimension one sub-scheme which is the union of two fundamental Schubert divisors.
We establish that the isomorphy type as an abstract algebraic variety of the complement of an ample hyperplane sub-bundle H of a projective space bundle of rank r-1 over the projective line depends only on the the r-fold self-intersection of H . In particular it depends neither on the ambient bundle nor on a particular ample hyperplane sub-bundle with given r-fold self-intersection. Our proof exploits the unexpected property that every such complement comes equipped with the structure of a non trivial torsor under a vector bundle on the affine line with a double origin.
We prove using an extension of Saito's criterion that the algebra of differential operators tangent to a free hyperplane arrangement is generated by the derivations of the arrangement, recovering in this way a result of F. J. Calderón-Moreno.
In this article, we give a counterexample to the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for non-singular quasi-projective varieties. A classical result of Hamm-Lê shows that Lefschetz hyperplane theorem can hold for hyperplanes in general position. We observe that the condition of ``hyperplane'' is strict in the sense that it is not possible to replace it by higher degree hypersurfaces. The counterexample is very simple: projective space minus finitely many points. Moreover, as an intermediate step we prove that the Grothendieck-Lefschetz theorem also fails in the quasi-projective case.
In this note, we give two applications of \cite[Theorem 3.1]{Hwang}. We first study the free family $\mathcal{K}$ of hyperplane sections of the smooth hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d\ge 3$. We prove that $X$ is determined by the free family $\mathcal{K}$ if $\dim(X)\ge 4$. As an application, we deduce that for $n\ge 4$, the hyperplane section of $X$ varies maximally in the moduli space of the smooth hypersurface of degree $d\ge 3$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We then study the free family of hyperplane sections of the smooth projective surface $X$ with Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\ge 0$.…
This paper investigates the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the generic hyperplane section of projective curves in positive characteristic case, and yields an application to a sharp bound on the regularity for nondegenerate projective varieties.
We prove that a general hyperplane section of a smooth Legendrian subvariety in a projective space admits Legendrian embedding into another projective space. This gives numerous new examples of smooth Legendrian subvarieties, some of which have positive Kodaira dimension.
For each $1\leq n\leq6$ we present formulas for the number of $n-$nodal curves in an $n-$dimensional linear system on a smooth, projective surface. This yields in particular the numbers of rational curves in the system of hyperplane sections of a generic $K3-$surface imbedded in \p{n} by a complete system of curves of genus $n$ as well as the number {\bf17,601,000} of rational ({\em singular}) plane quintic curves in a generic quintic threefold.
In this paper we describe projective curves and surfaces such that almost all their hyperplane sections are projectively equivalent. Our description is complete for curves and close to being complete for smooth surfaces. In the appendix we make some remarks on connections between the mentioned property of a projective variety and its adjunction properties.
In this short article, we determine the bigness of the tangent bundle $T_X$ of the projective bundle $X=\mathbb{P}_C(E)$ associated to a vector bundle $E$ on a smooth projective curve $C$.
We investigate the universal cover of projective threefolds whose tangent bundle is a direct sum of subbundles in case the Kodaira dimension is not 1 and 2. We also prove results on Fano manifolds with splitting tangent bundles in any dimension.
We show that any hyperplane section of a variety which is the inverse image of a smooth variety of dimension at least 2 by an endomorphism (wich is not an automorphism) of the projective space, is linearly complete. We stress the case of smooth surfaces in projective fourspace.
We study ample vector bundles on smooth projective stacks. In particular, we prove that the tangent bundle for the weighted projective stack $\mathbb{P}(a_0,...,a_n)$ is ample. A result of Mori shows that the only smooth projective varieties with ample vector bundle are isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^N$ for some $N$. Extending our geometric spaces from varieties to projective stacks, we are able to provide a new example. This leaves the open question of knowing if the only smooth projective stacks are the weighted projective stacks.
We introduce a generalized notion of Schwarzenberger bundle on the projective space. Associated to this more general definition, we give an ad-hoc notion of jumping subspaces of a Steiner bundle on ${\Bbb P^n}$ (which in rank $n$ coincides with the notion of unstable hyperplane introduced by Vallès, Ancona and Ottaviani). For the set of jumping hyperplanes, we find a sharp bound for its dimension. We also classify those Steiner bundles whose set of jumping hyperplanes have maximal dimension and prove that they are generalized Schwarzenberger bundles.
For a hypersurface in a projective space, we consider the set of pairs of a point and a line in the projective space such that the line intersects the hypersurface at the point with a fixed multiplicity. We prove that this set of pairs forms a smooth variety for a general hypersurface.
In this paper we present a way of computing the degree of the secant (resp., tangent) variety of a smooth projective surface, under the assumption that the divisor giving the embedding in the projective space is $3$-very ample. This method exploits the link between these varieties and the Hilbert scheme $0$-dimensional subschemes of length $2$ of the surface.
This paper generalises Mori's famous theorem about "Projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles" to normal projective varieties in the following way: A normal projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$ with ample tangent sheaf is isomorphic to the complex projective space.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$ whose tangent bundle is nef. We prove that $X$ admits a smooth morphism $X \to M$ such that the fibers are Fano varieties with nef tangent bundle and $T_M$ is numerically flat. We also prove that extremal contractions exist as smooth morphisms. As an application, we prove that, if the Frobenius morphism can be lifted modulo $p^2$, then $X$ admits, up to a finite étale Galois cover, a smooth morphism onto an ordinary abelian variety whose fibers are products of projective spaces.
We establish a general theory for projective dimensions of the logarithmic derivation modules of hyperplane arrangements. That includes the addition-deletion and restriction theorem, Yoshinaga-type result, and the division theorem for projective dimensions of hyperplane arrangements. They are generalizations of the free arrangement cases, that can be regarded as the special case of our result when the projective dimension is zero. The keys to prove them are several new methods to determine the surjectivity of the Euler and the Ziegler restriction maps, that is combinatorial when the projective…
In this article, we give numerical restrictions on the Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on higher-dimensional manifolds, which are inspired by the results of Casnati in the case of surfaces. As a by-product, we prove that the only projective manifolds whose tangent bundle is Ulrich are the twisted cubic and the Veronese surface. Moreover, we prove that the cotangent bundle is never Ulrich.
A result of Beauville states that with a few positive characterstic exceptions, the smooth hyperplane sections of hypersurfaces of degree $d>2$ in projective space are not all isomorphic. We address the question of whether these sections vary as much as possible. In arbitrary characteristic, we show that this is the case for a general hypersurface.
We give an explicit parametrization of the Hilbert schemes of rational curves C in P^n having a given splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle from P^n to C. The adopted technique uses the description of such curves as projections of a rational normal curve from a suitable linear vertex and a classification of those vertices that correspond to the required splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle. This classification involves the study of a suitable PGL(2) action on the relevant Grassmannian variety.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. A recent conjecture of S. Kovács states that if t\ he $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of the tangent bundle $T_X$ contains the $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of an ample vector bundle, then $X$ is either a projective space or a smooth quadric hypersurface. This conjecture is appealing since it is a common generalization of Mori's, Wahl's, Andreatt\ a-Wísniewski's, and Araujo-Druel-Kovács's characterizations of these spaces. In this paper I give a proof affirming this conjecture for varieties with Picard number 1.
Let $(X, A)$ be a nonsingular polarized toric 3-fold. We show that if the adjoint bundle of $A$ has no glabal section, then all ample line bundles on $X$ are normally generated. Even if the adjoint bundle is effective, if it is not big, then it is shown the normal generation. In particular, we show that all ample line bundles on a nonsingular toric Fano 3-fold are normally generated.
We formulate and prove a weighted version of Zariski's hyperplane section theorem on the topological fundamental groups of the complements of hypersurfaces in a projective space. As an application, we calculate fundamental groups of the complements of certain singular projective plane curves.
We construct smooth complex projective varieties of dimension 3 to 6 with variations of Hodge structure, by generalizing an example of J. Carlson and C. Simpson in dimension 2. Then, we study some of their properties, in particular their cohomology groups.
We give a generalization of the theorem of Bondal and Orlov about the derived categories of coherent sheaves on intersections of quadrics revealing its relation to projective duality. As an application we describe the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Fano 3-folds of index 1 and degrees 12, 16 and 18.
We give a simple combinatorial proof of the toric version of Mori's theorem that the only $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties with ample tangent bundle are the projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$.
A point $P$ in projective space is said to be Galois with respect to a hypersurface if the function field extension induced by the projection from $P$ is Galois. We present a hyperplane section theorem for Galois points. Precisely, if $P$ is a Galois point for a hypersurface, then $P$ is Galois for a general hyperplane section passing through $P$. As an application, we determine hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ with $n$-dimensional sets of Galois points.
In this article, we study projective log smooth pairs with numerically flat normalized logarithmic tangent bundle. Generalizing works of Jahnke-Radloff and Greb-Kebekus-Peternell, we show that, passing to an appropriate finite cover and up to isomorphism, these are the projective spaces or the log smooth pairs with numerically flat logarithmic tangent bundles blown-up at finitely many points away from the boundary. On the other hand, the structure of log smooth pairs with numerically flat logarithmic tangent bundle is well understood: they are toric fiber bundles over finite étale quotients of…
We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.
We investigate when the tangent bundle of a projective manifold has a non-trivial first order (or positive-dimensional) deformation. This leads to a new conjectural characterization of the complex projective space.
In this paper we compute certain two-point integrals over a moduli space of stable maps into projective space. Computation of one-point analogues of these integrals constitutes a proof of mirror symmetry for genus-zero one-point Gromov-Witten invariants of projective hypersurfaces. The integrals computed in this paper constitute a significant portion in the proof of mirror symmetry for genus-one GW-invariants completed in a separate paper. These integrals also provide explicit mirror formulas for genus-zero two-point GW-invariants of projective hypersurfaces. The approach described in this pap…
Let $ϕ: X \to \mathbb P^n$ be a double cover branched along a smooth hypersurface of degree $2m, 2 \leq m \leq n-1$. We study the varieties of minimal rational tangents $\mathcal C_x \subset \mathbb P T_x(X)$ at a general point $x$ of $X$. We describe the homogeneous ideal of $\mathcal C_x$ and show that the projective isomorphism type of $\mathcal C_x$ varies in a maximal way as $x$ varies over general points of $X$. Our description of the ideal of $\mathbb C_x$ implies a certain rigidity property of the covering morphism $ϕ$. As an application of this rigidity, we show that any finite morphi…
Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us …
Given a very ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety, the variation of Hodge structure associated to the universal family of hyperplane sections can be thought of as a $D$-module with action generated by the Gauss-Manin connection. The decomposition theorem for a projective morphism and results similar to the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem tell us that the only nontrivial part of this VHS occurs in the middle degree corresponding to the vanishing cohomology of the hyperplane sections. We use Nori's connectivity theorem to give an explicit description of the cohomology sheaves of the de …
In this article there are two main results. The first result gives a formula, in terms of a log resolution, for the graded pieces of the Hodge filtration on the cohomology of a unitary local system of rank one on the complement of an arbitrary divisor in a smooth projective complex variety. The second result is an application of the first. We give a combinatorial formula for the spectrum of a hyperplane arrangement. M. Saito recently proved that the spectrum of a hyperplane arrangement depends only on combinatorics. However, a combinatorial formula was missing. The formula is achieved by a dif…
We show that the cohomology of a rank 1 local system on the complement of a projective hyperplane arrangement can be calculated by the Aomoto complex in certain cases even if the condition on the sum of the residues of connection due to Esnault et al is not satisfied. For this we have to study the localization of Hodge-logarithmic differential forms which are defined by using an embedded resolution of singularities. As an application we can compute certain monodromy eigenspaces of the first Milnor cohomology group of the defining polynomial of the reflection hyperplane arrangement of type $G_{…
We first describe the tangent space to the affine flag manifold associated to a simple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ at the distinguished point starting from standard definitions. We then construct projective lines in the affine flag manifold tangent to given root vectors associated to imaginary roots of the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra and describe in which Schubert varieties they lie.
Theorem: If W is a smooth complex projective variety with h^1 (O-script_W) = 0, then a sufficiently ample smooth divisor X on W cannot be a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety, unless W is itself a Calabi-Yau. Corollary: A smooth hypersurface of degree d in P^n (n >= 2) is a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety iff n+2 <= d <= 2n+2. The method is to construct out of the variety W a universal family of all varieties Z for which X is a hyperplane section with normal bundle K_X, and examine the "bad" singularities of such Z. A motivation is to show many curves cannot be divisors on a…
One version of the classical Lefschetz hyperplane theorem states that for $U \subset \mathbb P^n$ a smooth quasi-projective variety of dimension at least $2$, and $H \cap U$ a general hyperplane section, the resulting map on étale fundamental groups $π_1(H \cap U) \rightarrow π_1(U)$ is surjective. We prove a generalization, replacing the hyperplane by a general $\operatorname{PGL}_{n+1}$-translate of an arbitrary projective variety: If $U \subset \mathbb P^n$ is a normal quasi-projective variety, $X$ is a geometrically irreducible projective variety of dimension at least $n + 1 - \dim U$, and…
In this article we exhibit certain projective degenerations of smooth $K3$ surfaces of degree $2g-2$ in $\Bbb P^g$ (whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane class), to a union of two rational normal scrolls, and also to a union of planes. As a consequence we prove that the general hyperplane section of such $K3$ surfaces has a corank one Gaussian map, if $g=11$ or $g\geq 13$. We also prove that the general such hyperplane section lies on a unique $K3$ surface, up to projectivities. Finally we present a new approach to the classification of prime Fano threefolds of index one, which doe…
The family of varieties of minimal rational tangents on a quasi-homogeneous projective manifold is isotrivial. Conversely, are projective manifolds with isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents quasi-homogenous? We will show that this is not true in general, even when the projective manifold has Picard number 1. In fact, an isotrivial family of varieties of minimal rational tangents needs not be locally flat in differential geometric sense. This leads to the question for which projective variety Z, the Z-isotriviality of varieties of minimal rational tangents implies local flatness. O…
We study the variety of common tangents for up to four quadric surfaces in projective three-space, with particular regard to configurations of four quadrics admitting a continuum of common tangents. We formulate geometrical conditions in the projective space defined by all complex quadric surfaces which express the fact that several quadrics are tangent along a curve to one and the same quadric of rank at least three, and called, for intuitive reasons: a basket. Lines in any ruling of the latter will be common tangents. These considerations are then restricted to spheres in Euclidean three-spa…
A point $p\in\mathbb{P}^N$ of a projective space is $h$-identifiable, with respect to a variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, if it can be written as linear combination of $h$ elements of $X$ in a unique way. Identifiability is implied by conditions on the contact locus in $X$ of general linear spaces called non weak defectiveness and non tangential weak defectiveness. We give conditions ensuring non tangential weak defectiveness of an irreducible and non-degenerated projective variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, and we apply these results to Segre-Veronese varieties.
Suppose that $X$ is a projective manifold whose tangent bundle $T_X$ contains a locally free strictly nef subsheaf. We prove that $X$ is isomorphic to a projective bundle over a hyperbolic manifold. Moreover, if the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ is virtually abelian, then $X$ is isomorphic to a projective space.
A classical approach to investigate a closed projective scheme $W$ consists of considering a general hyperplane section of $W$, which inherits many properties of $W$. The inverse problem that consists in finding a scheme $W$ starting from a possible hyperplane section $Y$ is called a {\em lifting problem}, and every such scheme $W$ is called a {\em lifting} of $Y$. Investigations in this topic can produce methods to obtain schemes with specific properties. For example, any smooth point for $Y$ is smooth also for $W$. We characterize all the liftings of $Y$ with a given Hilbert polynomial by a …
The cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces can be approached both with vertex algebra tools and equivariant tools. Using the first tool, we study the existence and the structure of universal formulas for the Chern classes of the tangent bundle over the Hilbert scheme of points on a projective surface. The second tool leads then to nice generating formulas in the particular case of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane.
