We give a generalization of the theorem of Bondal and Orlov about the derived categories of coherent sheaves on intersections of quadrics revealing its relation to projective duality. As an application we describe the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Fano 3-folds of index 1 and degrees 12, 16 and 18.
We discuss the relation between the graded stable derived category of a hypersurface and that of its hyperplane section. The motivation comes from the compatibility between homological mirror symmetry for the Calabi-Yau manifold defined by an invertible polynomial and that for the singularity defined by the same polynomial.
We explicit some general properties regarding surfaces with Prym-canonical hyperplane sections and the geometric genus of their possible singularities. Moreover, we construct new examples of this type of surfaces.
As is remarked by B. Totaro, R. Thomas essentially proved that the Hodge conjecture is inductively equivalent to the existence of a hyperplane section, called a generalized Thomas hyperplane section, such that the restriction to it of a given primitive Hodge class does not vanish. We study the relations between the vanishing cycles in the cohomology of a general fiber, and show that each relation between the vanishing cycles of type (0,0) with unipotent monodromy around a singular hyperplane section defines a primitive Hodge class such that this singular hyperplane section is a generalized Tho…
This paper investigates the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the generic hyperplane section of projective curves in positive characteristic case, and yields an application to a sharp bound on the regularity for nondegenerate projective varieties.
We prove that a general hyperplane section of a smooth Legendrian subvariety in a projective space admits Legendrian embedding into another projective space. This gives numerous new examples of smooth Legendrian subvarieties, some of which have positive Kodaira dimension.
A result of Beauville states that with a few positive characterstic exceptions, the smooth hyperplane sections of hypersurfaces of degree $d>2$ in projective space are not all isomorphic. We address the question of whether these sections vary as much as possible. In arbitrary characteristic, we show that this is the case for a general hypersurface.
A point $P$ in projective space is said to be Galois with respect to a hypersurface if the function field extension induced by the projection from $P$ is Galois. We present a hyperplane section theorem for Galois points. Precisely, if $P$ is a Galois point for a hypersurface, then $P$ is Galois for a general hyperplane section passing through $P$. As an application, we determine hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ with $n$-dimensional sets of Galois points.
By a theorem of Wahl, the canonically embedded curves which are hyperplane section of K3 surfaces are distinguished by the non-surjectivity of their Wahl map. In this paper we address the problem of distinguishing hyperplane sections of abelian surfaces. The somewhat surprising result is that the Wahl map of such curves is (tendentially) surjective, but their second Wahl map has corank at least 2 (in fact a more precise result is proved).
Theorem: If W is a smooth complex projective variety with h^1 (O-script_W) = 0, then a sufficiently ample smooth divisor X on W cannot be a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety, unless W is itself a Calabi-Yau. Corollary: A smooth hypersurface of degree d in P^n (n >= 2) is a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety iff n+2 <= d <= 2n+2. The method is to construct out of the variety W a universal family of all varieties Z for which X is a hyperplane section with normal bundle K_X, and examine the "bad" singularities of such Z. A motivation is to show many curves cannot be divisors on a…
We compute some numerical invariants of the lines on hyperplane sections of a smooth cubic threefold over complex numbers. We also prove that for any smooth hypersurface $X\subset \mathbb P^{n+1}$ of degree $d$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, if $d>n>1$ and $(n,d)\neq (2,3),(3,4)$, then a general hyperplane section only admits finitely many others which are isomorphic to it.
In this note, we give two applications of \cite[Theorem 3.1]{Hwang}. We first study the free family $\mathcal{K}$ of hyperplane sections of the smooth hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d\ge 3$. We prove that $X$ is determined by the free family $\mathcal{K}$ if $\dim(X)\ge 4$. As an application, we deduce that for $n\ge 4$, the hyperplane section of $X$ varies maximally in the moduli space of the smooth hypersurface of degree $d\ge 3$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We then study the free family of hyperplane sections of the smooth projective surface $X$ with Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\ge 0$.…
We construct smooth complex projective varieties of dimension 3 to 6 with variations of Hodge structure, by generalizing an example of J. Carlson and C. Simpson in dimension 2. Then, we study some of their properties, in particular their cohomology groups.
We show that any hyperplane section of a variety which is the inverse image of a smooth variety of dimension at least 2 by an endomorphism (wich is not an automorphism) of the projective space, is linearly complete. We stress the case of smooth surfaces in projective fourspace.
We use three different methods to count the number of lines in the plane whose intersection with a fixed general quintic has fixed cross-ratios. We compare and contrast these methods, shedding light on some classical ideas which underly modern techniques.
Let $S \subset \mathbb{P}^g$ be a smooth $K3$ surface of degree $2g-2$, $g \geq 3$. We classify all the cases for which $h^0(\mathcal{N}_{S/\mathbb{P}^g}(-2)) \neq 0$ and the cases for which $h^0(\mathcal{N}_{S/\mathbb{P}^g}(-2)) < h^0(\mathcal{N}_{C/\mathbb{P}^{g-1}}(-2))$ for $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{g-1}$ a general canonical curve section of $S$.
In this note we give a complete description of all the hyperplane section of the projective bundle associated to the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^2$ under its natural embedding in $\mathbb{P}^7.$ As an application one obtains a description of all possible deformations, in $\text{SL_3(\mathbb{C}}/B,$ of the co-dimension one sub-scheme which is the union of two fundamental Schubert divisors.
Given a smooth hyperplane section $H$ of a rational homogeneous space $G/P$ with Picard number one, we address the question whether it is always possible to lift an automorphism of $H$ to the Lie group $G$, or more precisely to Aut$(G/P)$. Using linear spaces and quadrics in $H$, we show that the answer is positive up to a few well understood exceptions related to Jordan algebras. When $G/P$ is an adjoint variety, we show how to describe Aut$(H)$ completely, extending results obtained by Prokhorov and Zaidenberg when $G$ is the exceptional group $G_2$.
Let p: M -> B be a Lagrangian fibration on a hyperkahler manifold of maximal holonomy (also known as IHS), and H the generator of the Picard group of B. We prove that the pullback $p^*(H)$ is a primitive class on M.
We prove a type of the Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem on Q-Fano 3-folds with Picard number one and $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities by using some degeneration method. As a byproduct, we obtain a new example of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with Picard number one whose invariants are $$(H_X^3, c_2 (X) \cdot H_X, {e} (X)) = (8, 44, -88),$$ where $H_X$, $e(X)$ and $c_2(X)$ are an ample generator of $\Pic(X)$, the topological Euler characteristic number and the second Chern class of $X$ respectively.
In this article we study, given a pair of integers (d,g), the problem of existence of a smooth, irreducible, non-degenerate curve in the projective n-domensional space of degree d and genus g (the Halphen-Castelnuovo Problem). We define two domains from the (d,g)-plane, D1,n and D2,n, and we prove that there is no gap in D1,n. This follows by constructing curves on some rational surfaces with hyperelliptic hyperplane sections, and from some previous Theorems of Ciliberto, Sernesi, and of the author. Moreover, in the last section, based on some results of Horrowitz, Ciliberto, Harris, Eisenbud,…
We study the essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS), defined by W. Ebeling and S. Gusein-Zade, as a generalization of isolated singularity. We prove in dimension $3$ a minimality theorem for the Milnor number of a generic hyperplane section of an EIDS, generalizing previous results by J. Snoussi in dimension $2$. We define strongly generic hyperplane sections of an EIDS and show that they are still EIDS. Using strongly general hyperplanes, we extend a result of Lê D. T. concerning constancy of the Milnor number.
We present algebraic and geometric arguments that give a complete classification of the rational normal scrolls that are hyperplane section of a given rational normal scrolls.
We prove the existence of Gysin morphisms for hyperplane sections that may not satisfy the usual hypotheses of the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem. As an application, we show the triviality of the Alexander polynomial of a particular class of non-symmetric line arrangements, thus providing positive evidence for a conjecture of Papadima and Suciu.
Given a real algebraic curve, embedded in projective space, we study the computational problem of deciding whether there exists a hyperplane meeting the curve in real points only. More generally, given any divisor on such a curve, we may ask whether the corresponding linear series contains an effective divisor with totally real support. This translates into a particular type of parametrized real root counting problem that we wish to solve exactly. On the other hand, it is known that for a given genus and number of real connected components, any linear series of sufficiently large degree contai…
We formulate and prove a weighted version of Zariski's hyperplane section theorem on the topological fundamental groups of the complements of hypersurfaces in a projective space. As an application, we calculate fundamental groups of the complements of certain singular projective plane curves.
We formulated a mirror-free approach to the mirror conjecture, namely, quantum hyperplane section conjecture, and proved it in the case of nonnegative complete intersections in homogeneous manifolds. For the proof we followed the scheme of Givental's proof of a mirror theorem for toric complete intersections.
It is known that the smooth rational threefolds of P^5 having a rational non-special surface of P^4 as general hyperplane section have degree d=3,... ,7. We study such threefolds X from the point of view of linear systems of surfaces in P^3, looking in each case fosr an explicit description of a birational map from P^3 to X. For d=3,..., 6 we prove that there exists a line L on X such that the projection map of X centered at L is birational; we completely describe the base loci B of the linear systems found in this way and give a description of any such threefold X as a suitable blowing-down o…

In this paper we describe projective curves and surfaces such that almost all their hyperplane sections are projectively equivalent. Our description is complete for curves and close to being complete for smooth surfaces. In the appendix we make some remarks on connections between the mentioned property of a projective variety and its adjunction properties.
We prove a certain 'fat hyperplane section' Weak Lefschetz-type theorem for etale cohomology of non-projective varieties, similar to a result of Goresky and MacPherson (over complex numbers). This statement easily yields certain (vast) generalizations of the 'ordinary' Weak Lefschetz and Barth's theorems in arbitrary characteristic (that do not require any stratified Morse theory for their proof).
Let $X$ be a cubic hypersurface in $\mathbb P^6$ or a hypersurface of degree greater than equal to $7$ in $\mathbb P^5$. In this note we try to understand, for a very general hyperplane section of $X$, the non-injectivity locus of the corresponding push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow group of certain dimension.
In this paper, we study the singularities of a general hyperplane section $H$ of a three-dimensional quasi-projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that if $X$ has only canonical singularities, then $H$ has only rational double points. We also prove, under the assumption that $p>5$, that if $X$ has only klt singularities, then so does $H$.
In this paper we study general hyperplane sections of adjoint and coadjoint varieties. We show that these are the only sections of homogeneous varieties such that a maximal torus of the automorphism group of the ambient variety stabilizes them. We then study their geometry, provide formulas for their classical cohomology rings in terms of Schubert classes and compute the quantum Chevalley formula. This allows us to obtain results about the semi-simplicity of the (small) quantum cohomology, analogous to those holding for (co)adjoint varieties.
In the present paper we completely classify locally free sheaves of rank $2$ with vanishing intermediate cohomology modules on the image of the Segre embedding $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2\subseteq\mathbb{P}^8$ and its general hyperplane sections. Such a classification extends similar already known results regarding del Pezzo varieties with Picard numbers $1$ and $3$ and dimension at least $3$.

The Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem asserts that an affine variety is homotopy equivalent to a space obtained from its generic hyperplane section by attaching some cells. The purpose of this paper is to describe attaching maps of these cells for the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement defined over real numbers. The cells and attaching maps are described in combinatorial terms of chambers. We also discuss the cellular chain complex with coefficients in a local system and a presentation for the fundamental group associated to the minimal CW-decomposition for the complement.
We present a construction of (faithful) group actions via derived equivalences in the general categorical setting of algebraic 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories. To each algebraic 2-Calabi--Yau category $\mathscr{C}$ satisfying standard mild assumptions, we associate a groupoid $\mathscr{G}_{ \mathscr{C} }$, named the green groupoid of $\mathscr{C}$, defined in an intrinsic homological way. Its objects are given by a set of representatives $\operatorname{mrig} \mathscr{C}$ of the equivalence classes of basic maximal rigid objects of $\mathscr{C}$, arrows are given by mutation, and relation…
This article classifies Knutsen K3 surfaces all of whose hyperplane sections are irreducible and reduced. As an application, this gives infinite families of K3 surfaces of Picard number two whose general hyperplane sections are Brill-Noether general curves.
Let $(X, A)$ be a nonsingular polarized toric 3-fold. We show that if the adjoint bundle of $A$ has no glabal section, then all ample line bundles on $X$ are normally generated. Even if the adjoint bundle is effective, if it is not big, then it is shown the normal generation. In particular, we show that all ample line bundles on a nonsingular toric Fano 3-fold are normally generated.
We prove that the exceptional complex Lie group $F_4$ has a transitive action on the hyperplane section of the complex Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. Our proof is direct and constructive. We use an explicit realization of the vector and spin actions of $\Spin(9,\C) \leq F_4$. Moreover, we identify the stabilizer of the $F_4$-action as a parabolic subgroup $P_4$ (with Levi factor $B_3T_1$) of the complex Lie group $F_4$. In the real case we obtain an analogous realization of $F_4^{(-20)}/P_4$.
In this paper, we discuss some necessary and sufficient condition for a curve to be arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, in terms of its general hyperplane section. We obtain a characterization of the degree matrices that can occur for points in the plane that are the general hyperplane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3. We prove that almost all the degree matrices with positive subdiagonal that occur for the general plane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P^3, arise also as degree matrices of the general plane section of some smooth, integral, non ari…
Only few categories of free arrangements are known in which Terao's conjecture holds. One of such categories consists of $3$-arrangements with unbalanced Ziegler restrictions. In this paper, we generalize this result to arbitrary dimensional arrangements in terms of flags by introducing unbalanced multiarrangements. For that purpose, we generalize several freeness criterions for simple arrangements, including Yoshinaga's freeness criterion, to unbalanced multiarrangements.
We determine the number of ${\mathbb{F}}_q$-rational points of hyperplane sections of classical determinantal varieties defined by the vanishing of minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix, and identify sections giving the maximum number of ${\mathbb{F}}_q$-rational points. Further we consider similar questions for sections by linear subvarieties of a fixed codimension in the ambient projective space. This is closely related to the study of linear codes associated to determinantal varieties, and the determination of their weight distribution, minimum distance and generalized Hamming weights.…
We describe the standard and Leray filtrations on the cohomology groups with compact supports of a quasi projective variety with coefficients in a constructible complex using flags of hyperplane sections on a partial compactification of a related variety. One of the key ingredients of the proof is the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for perverse sheaves and, in an appendix, we discuss the base change maps for constructible sheaves on algebraic varieties and their role in a proof, due to Beilinson, of the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem.
We prove a conjecture of Teissier asserting that if $f$ has an isolated singularity at $P$ and $H$ is a smooth hypersurface through $P$, then $\widetildeα_P(f)\geq \widetildeα_P(f\vert_H)+\frac{1}{θ_P(f)+1}$, where $\widetildeα_P(f)$ and $\widetildeα_P(f\vert_H)$ are the minimal exponents at $P$ of $f$ and $f\vert_H$, respectively, and $θ_P(f)$ is an invariant obtained by comparing the integral closures of the powers of the Jacobian ideal of $f$ and of the ideal defining $P$. The proof builds on the approaches of Loeser and Elduque-Mustata. The new ingredients are a result concerning the behav…
Let C be a Brill-Noether-Petri curve of genus g\geq 12. We prove that C lies on a polarized K3 surface, or on a limit thereof, if and only if the Gauss-Wahl map for C is not surjective. The proof is obtained by studying the validity of two conjectures by J. Wahl. Let I_C be the ideal sheaf of a non-hyperelliptic, genus g, canonical curve. The first conjecture states that, if g\geq 8, and if the Clifford index of C is greater than 2, then H^1(P^{g-1}, I_C^2(k))=0, for k\geq 3. We prove this conjecture for g\geq 11. The second conjecture states that a Brill-Noether-Petri curve of genus g\geq 12 …
