The Steiner $k$-eccentricity of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum Steiner distance over all $k$-subsets of $V (G)$ which contain $v$. In this note, we design a linear algorithm for computing the Steiner $3$-eccentricities and the connective Steiner $3$-eccentricity index on a tree and thus improving a quadratic algorithm presented in [G. Yu, X. Li, \emph{Connective Steiner 3-eccentricity index and network similarity measure}, Appl. Math. Comput. 386 (2020), 125446.]
The Steiner tree enumeration problem is a well known problem that asks for enumerating Steiner trees. Numerous theoretical works proposed algorithms for the problem and analyzed their complexity, but there are no practical algorithms and experimental studies. In this paper, we study the Steiner tree enumeration problem practically. We define a problem cost-constrained minimal Steiner tree enumeration problem, which enumerates minimal Steiner trees with costs not larger than a given threshold. To solve the problem, we propose a binary decision diagram (BDD)-based algorithm. The BDD-based algori…
In this note we consider the Steiner tree problem under Bilu-Linial stability. We give strong geometric structural properties that need to be satisfied by stable instances. We then make use of, and strengthen, these geometric properties to show that $1.562$-stable instances of Euclidean Steiner trees are polynomial-time solvable. We also provide a connection between certain approximation algorithms and Bilu-Linial stability for Steiner trees.
Kimelfeld and Sagiv [Kimelfeld and Sagiv, PODS 2006], [Kimelfeld and Sagiv, Inf. Syst. 2008] pointed out the problem of enumerating $K$-fragments is of great importance in a keyword search on data graphs. In a graph-theoretic term, the problem corresponds to enumerating minimal Steiner trees in (directed) graphs. In this paper, we propose a linear-delay and polynomial-space algorithm for enumerating all minimal Steiner trees, improving on a previous result in [Kimelfeld and Sagiv, Inf. Syst. 2008]. Our enumeration algorithm can be extended to other Steiner problems, such as minimal Steiner for…
In the Directed Steiner Tree (DST) problem the input is a directed edge-weighted graph $G=(V,E)$, a root vertex $r$ and a set $S \subseteq V$ of $k$ terminals. The goal is to find a min-cost subgraph that connects $r$ to each of the terminals. DST admits an $O(\log^2 k/\log \log k)$-approximation in quasi-polynomial time, and an $O(k^ε)$-approximation for any fixed $ε> 0$ in polynomial-time. Resolving the existence of a polynomial-time poly-logarithmic approximation is a major open problem in approximation algorithms. In a recent work, Friggstad and Mousavi [ICALP 2023] obtained a simple and e…
We give the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for quasi-bipartite instances of Directed Steiner Tree on graphs that exclude fixed minors. In particular, for $K_r$-minor-free graphs our approximation guarantee is $O(r\cdot\sqrt{\log r})$ and, further, for planar graphs our approximation guarantee is 20. Our algorithm uses the primal-dual scheme. We employ a more involved method of determining when to buy an edge while raising dual variables since, as we show, the natural primal-dual scheme fails to raise enough dual value to pay for the purchased solution. As a consequence, we also …
Embeddings of graphs into distributions of trees that preserve distances in expectation are a cornerstone of many optimization algorithms. Unfortunately, online or dynamic algorithms which use these embeddings seem inherently randomized and ill-suited against adaptive adversaries. In this paper we provide a new tree embedding which addresses these issues by deterministically embedding a graph into a single tree containing $O(\log n)$ copies of each vertex while preserving the connectivity structure of every subgraph and $O(\log^2 n)$-approximating the cost of every subgraph. Using this embeddi…
We consider the problem of computing a Steiner tree of minimum cost under a hop constraint which requires the depth of the tree to be at most $k$. Our main result is an exact algorithm for metrics induced by graphs with bounded treewidth that runs in time $n^{O(k)}$. For the special case of a path, we give a simple algorithm that solves the problem in polynomial time, even if $k$ is part of the input. The main result can be used to obtain, in quasi-polynomial time, a near-optimal solution that violates the $k$-hop constraint by at most one hop for more general metrics induced by graphs of boun…
The $k$-Steiner-2NCS problem is as follows: Given a constant $k$, and an undirected connected graph $G = (V,E)$, non-negative costs $c$ on $E$, and a partition $(T, V-T)$ of $V$ into a set of terminals, $T$, and a set of non-terminals (or, Steiner nodes), where $|T|=k$, find a minimum-cost two-node connected subgraph that contains the terminals. We present a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for the unweighted problem, and a randomized PTAS for the weighted problem. We obtain similar results for the $k$-Steiner-2ECS problem, where the input is the same, and the algorithmic goal is to find a…

In the Steiner Tree Augmentation Problem (STAP), we are given a graph $G = (V,E)$, a set of terminals $R \subseteq V$, and a Steiner tree $T$ spanning $R$. The edges $L := E \setminus E(T)$ are called links and have non-negative costs. The goal is to augment $T$ by adding a minimum cost set of links, so that there are 2 edge-disjoint paths between each pair of vertices in $R$. This problem is a special case of the Survivable Network Design Problem, which can be approximated to within a factor of 2 using iterative rounding~\cite{J2001}. We give the first polynomial time algorithm for STAP with …
We give a dynamic programming solution to find the minimum cost of a diameter constrained Steiner tree in case of directed graphs. Then we show a simple reduction from undirected version to the directed version to realize an algorithm of similar complexity i.e, FPT in number of terminal vertices. Other natural variants of constrained Steiner trees are defined by imposing constraints on the min-degree and size of the Steiner tree and some polynomial time reductions among these problems are proven. To the best of our knowledge, these fairly simple reductions are not present in the literature pri…
In this paper, we consider the Uniform Cost-Distance Steiner Tree Problem in metric spaces, a generalization of the well-known Steiner tree problem. Cost-distance Steiner trees minimize the sum of the total length and the weighted path lengths from a dedicated root to the other terminals, which have a weight to penalize the path length. They are applied when the tree is intended for signal transmission, e.g. in chip design or telecommunication networks, and the signal speed through the tree has to be considered besides the total length. Constant factor approximation algorithms for the uniform …
