Convergence of an adaptive collocation method for the stationary parametric diffusion equation with finite-dimensional affine coefficient is shown. The adaptive algorithm relies on a recently introduced residual-based reliable a posteriori error estimator. For the convergence proof, a strategy recently used for a stochastic Galerkin method with an hierarchical error estimator is transferred to the collocation setting. Extensions to other variants of adaptive collocation methods (including the classical one proposed in the paper "Dimension-adaptive tensor-product quadratuture" Computing (2003) by T. Gerstner and M. Griebel) is explored.
Based on the Fourier extension, we propose an oversampling collocation method for solving the elliptic partial differential equations with variable coefficients over arbitrary irregular domains. This method only uses the function values on the equispaced nodes, which has low computational cost and versatility. While a variety of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, it shows that the approximation error fast reaches a plateau with increasing the degrees of freedom, due to the inherent ill-conditioned of frames.
We propose and analyse a fully adaptive strategy for solving elliptic PDEs with random data in this work. A hierarchical sequence of adaptive mesh refinements for the spatial approximation is combined with adaptive anisotropic sparse Smolyak grids in the stochastic space in such a way as to minimize the computational cost. The novel aspect of our strategy is that the hierarchy of spatial approximations is sample dependent so that the computational effort at each collocation point can be optimised individually. We outline a rigorous analysis for the convergence and computational complexity of t…
In this paper, we present and study $C^1$ Petrov-Galerkin and Gauss collocation methods with arbitrary polynomial degree $k$ ($\ge 3$) for one-dimensional elliptic equations. We prove that, the solution and its derivative approximations converge with rate $2k-2$ at all grid points; and the solution approximation is superconvergent at all interior roots of a special Jacobi polynomial of degree $k+1$ in each element, the first-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at all interior $k-2$ Lobatto points, and the second-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at $k-1$ Gauss poi…
We obtained convergence rates of the collocation approximation by deep ReLU neural networks of solutions to elliptic PDEs with lognormal inputs, parametrized by $\boldsymbol{y}$ from the non-compact set $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. The approximation error is measured in the norm of the Bochner space $L_2(\mathbb{R}^\infty, V, γ)$, where $γ$ is the infinite tensor product standard Gaussian probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^\infty$ and $V$ is the energy space. We also obtained similar results for the case when the lognormal inputs are parametrized on $\mathbb{R}^M$ with very large dimension $M$, and th…
We introduce a new numerical method based on machine learning to approximate the solution of elliptic partial differential equations with collocation using a set of sigmoidal functions. We show that a feedforward neural network with a single hidden layer with sigmoidal functions and fixed, random, internal weights and biases can be used to compute accurately a collocation solution. The choice to fix internal weights and bias leads to the so-called Extreme Learning Machine network. We discuss how to determine the range for both internal weights and biases in order to obtain a good underlining a…

This work is a follow-up to our previous contribution ("Convergence of sparse collocation for functions of countably many Gaussian random variables (with application to elliptic PDEs)", SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 2018), and contains further insights on some aspects of the solution of elliptic PDEs with lognormal diffusion coefficients using sparse grids. Specifically, we first focus on the choice of univariate interpolation rules, advocating the use of Gaussian Leja points as introduced by Narayan and Jakeman ("Adaptive Leja sparse grid constructions for stochastic collocation and high-dimensional …
We present a meshfree generalized finite difference method for solving Poisson's equation with a diffusion coefficient that contains jump discontinuities up to several orders of magnitude. To discretize the diffusion operator, we formulate a strong form method that uses a smearing of the discontinuity; and a conservative formulation based on locally computed Voronoi cells. Additionally, we propose a novel conservative formulation for enforcing Neumann boundary conditions that is compatible with the conservative formulation of the diffusion operator. Finally, we introduce a way to switch from t…
In this article, a formulation of a point-collocation method in which the unknown function is approximated using global expansion in tensor product Bernstein polynomial basis is presented. Bernstein polynomials used in this study are defined over general interval [a,b]. Method incorporates several ideas that enable higher numerical efficiency compared to Bernstein polynomial methods that have been previously presented. The approach is illustrated by a solution of Poisson, Helmholtz and Biharmonic equations with Dirichlet and Neumann type boundary conditions. Comparisons with analytical solutio…
We consider computing eigenspaces of an elliptic self-adjoint operator depending on a countable number of parameters in an affine fashion. The eigenspaces of interest are assumed to be isolated in the sense that the corresponding eigenvalues are separated from the rest of the spectrum for all values of the parameters. We show that such eigenspaces can in fact be extended to complex-analytic functions of the parameters and quantify this analytic dependence in way that leads to convergence of sparse polynomial approximations. A stochastic collocation method on an anisoptropic sparse grid in the …
The main target of this paper is to present a new and efficient method to solve a nonlinear free boundary mathematical model of atherosclerosis. This model consists of three parabolics, one elliptic and one ordinary differential equations that are coupled together and describe the growth of a plaque in the artery. We start our discussion by using the front fixing method to fix the free domain and simplify the model by changing the mix boundary condition to a Neumann one by applying suitable changes of variables. Then, after employing a nonclassical finite difference and the collocation method …
A general adaptive refinement strategy for solving linear elliptic partial differential equation with random data is proposed and analysed herein. The adaptive strategy extends the a posteriori error estimation framework introduced by Guignard and Nobile in 2018 (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 56, 3121--3143) to cover problems with a nonaffine parametric coefficient dependence. A suboptimal, but nonetheless reliable and convenient implementation of the strategy involves approximation of the decoupled PDE problems with a common finite element approximation space. Computational results obtained using suc…

We use trivariate spline functions for the numerical solution of the Dirichlet problem of the 3D elliptic Monge-Ampére equation. Mainly we use the spline collocation method introduced in [SIAM J. Numerical Analysis, 2405-2434,2022] to numerically solve iterative Poisson equations and use an averaged algorithm to ensure the convergence of the iterations. We shall also establish the rate of convergence under a sufficient condition and provide some numerical evidence to show the numerical rates. Then we present many computational results to demonstrate that this approach works very well. In parti…
We present a direct numerical method for the solution of an optimal control problem controlling the growth of LDL, HDL and plaque. The optimal control problem is constrained with a system of coupled nonlinear free and mixed boundary partial differential equations consisting of three parabolics one elliptic and one ordinary differential equations. In the first step, the original problem is transformed from a free boundary problem into a fixed one and from the mixed boundary condition to a Neumann one. Then, employing a fixed point-collocation method, we solve the optimal control problem. In eac…
We consider a linear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with a generic uniformly bounded parametric coefficient. The solution to this PDE problem is approximated in the framework of stochastic Galerkin finite element methods. We perform a posteriori error analysis of Galerkin approximations and derive a reliable and efficient estimate for the energy error in these approximations. Practical versions of this error estimate are discussed and tested numerically for a model problem with non-affine parametric representation of the coefficient. Furthermore, we use the error reduction indica…
Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have recently gained popularity for solving partial differential equations, given the fact they escape the curse of dimensionality. In this paper, we present Physics Informed Neural Networks as an underdetermined point matching collocation method then expose the connection between Galerkin Least Square (GALS) and PINNs, to develop an a priori error estimate, in the context of elliptic problems. In particular, techniques that belong to the realm of least square finite elements and Rademacher complexity analysis are used to obtain the error estimate.
This paper addresses the nonlinear elliptic curl-curl equation with uncertainties in the material law. It is frequently employed in the numerical evaluation of magnetostatic fields, where the uncertainty is ascribed to the so-called B-H curve. A truncated Karhunen-Loève approximation of the stochastic B-H curve is presented and analyzed with regard to monotonicity constraints. A stochastic non-linear curl-curl formulation is introduced and numerically approximated by a finite element and collocation method in the deterministic and stochastic variable, respectively. The stochastic regularity is…

In this paper, we are concerned with the quantification of uncertainties that arise from intra-day oscillations in the demand for natural gas transported through large-scale networks. The short-term transient dynamics of the gas flow is modelled by a hierarchy of hyperbolic systems of balance laws based on the isentropic Euler equations. We extend a novel adaptive strategy for solving elliptic PDEs with random data, recently proposed and analysed by Lang, Scheichl, and Silvester [J. Comput. Phys., 419:109692, 2020], to uncertain gas transport problems. Sample-dependent adaptive meshes and a mo…
The determination of exponentially stable equilibria and their basin of attraction for a dynamical system given by a general autonomous ordinary differential equation can be achieved by means of a contraction metric. A contraction metric is a Riemannian metric with respect to which the distance between adjacent solutions decreases as time increases. The Riemannian metric can be expressed by a matrix-valued function on the phase space. The determination of a contraction metric can be achieved by approximately solving a matrix-valued partial differential equation by mesh-free collocation using R…
