In this paper, we present and study $C^1$ Petrov-Galerkin and Gauss collocation methods with arbitrary polynomial degree $k$ ($\ge 3$) for one-dimensional elliptic equations. We prove that, the solution and its derivative approximations converge with rate $2k-2$ at all grid points; and the solution approximation is superconvergent at all interior roots of a special Jacobi polynomial of degree $k+1$ in each element, the first-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at all interior $k-2$ Lobatto points, and the second-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at $k-1$ Gauss points, with an order of $k+2$, $k+1$, and $k$, respectively. As a by-product, we prove that both the Petrov-Galerkin solution and the Gauss collocation solution are superconvergent towards a particular Jacobi projection of the exact solution in $H^2$, $H^1$, and $L^2$ norms. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
In this paper, a new $C^1$-conforming Petrov-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations is designed and analyzed. The trail space of the proposed method is a $C^1$-conforming ${\mathbb Q}_k$ (i.e., tensor product of polynomials of degree at most $k$) finite element space while the test space is taken as the $L^2$ (discontinuous) piecewise ${\mathbb Q}_{k-2}$ polynomial space. Existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is proved and optimal error estimates in all $L^2, H^1, H^2$-norms are established. In addition, superconvergence properties of the new method are investigated an…

We propose and study numerically the implicit approximation in time of the Navier-Stokes equations by a Galerkin-collocation method in time combined with inf-sup stable finite element methods in space. The conceptual basis of the Galerkin-collocation approach is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs in terms of less complex algebraic systems of the latter. Regularity of higher order in time of the discrete solution is ensured furthe…
This paper investigate on numerical analysis on modified Single-layer approach to exterior Dirichlet problem of Laplace equation. We complete the convergence and error analysis of Petrov-Galerkin and Galerkin-Collocation methods with trigonometric basis for the induced modified Symm's integral equation of the first kind on analytic boundary. Besides, utilizing the composite trapezial quadrature formula and trigonometric interpolation to handle the singularity in modified logarithmic kernel, we establish the numerical procedure for implementation. On these numerical examples, we compare the eff…
We present a unified analysis for a family of variational time discretization methods, including discontinuous Galerkin methods and continuous Galerkin-Petrov methods, applied to non-stiff initial value problems. Besides the well-definedness of the methods, the global error and superconvergence properties are analyzed under rather weak abstract assumptions which also allow considerations of a wide variety of quadrature formulas. Numerical experiments illustrate and support the theoretical results.
The Radial Point Interpolation Mixed Collocation (RPIMC) method is proposed in this paper for transient analysis of diffusion problems. RPIMC is an efficient purely meshless method where the solution of the field variable is obtained through collocation. The field function and its gradient are both interpolated (mixed collocation approach) leading to reduced $C$-continuity requirement compared to strong-form collocation schemes. The method's accuracy is evaluated in heat conduction benchmark problems. The RPIMC convergence is compared against the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Mixed Collocatio…

We consider a family of variational time discretizations that are generalizations of discontinuous Galerkin (dG) and continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) methods. The family is characterized by two parameters. One describes the polynomial ansatz order while the other one is associated with the global smoothness that is ensured by higher order collocation conditions at both ends of the subintervals. The presented methods provide the same stability properties as dG or cGP. Provided that suitable quadrature rules of Hermite type for evaluating the integrals in the variational conditions are used, the…
In this paper, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spectral discretisation matrices resulted from the Legendre dual-Petrov-Galerkin (LDPG) method for the $m$th-order initial value problem (IVP): $u^{(m)}(t)=σu(t),\, t\in (-1,1)$ with constant $σ\not=0$ and usual initial conditions at $t=-1,$ are associated with the generalised Bessel polynomials (GBPs). The essential idea of the analysis is to properly construct the basis functions for the solution and its dual spaces so that the matrix of the $m$th derivative is an identity matrix, and the mass matrix is then identical or app…
Three kinds of Fragile Points Methods based on Petrov-Galerkin weak-forms (PG-FPMs) are proposed for analyzing heat conduction problems in nonhomogeneous anisotropic media. This is a follow-up of the previous study on the original FPM based on a symmetric Galerkin weak-form. The trial function is piecewise-continuous, written as local Taylor expansions at the Fragile Points. A modified Radial Basis Function-based Differential Quadrature (RBF-DQ) method is employed for establishing the local approximation. The Dirac delta function, Heaviside step function, and the local fundamental solution of …
