We consider a family of variational time discretizations that are generalizations of discontinuous Galerkin (dG) and continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) methods. The family is characterized by two parameters. One describes the polynomial ansatz order while the other one is associated with the global smoothness that is ensured by higher order collocation conditions at both ends of the subintervals. The presented methods provide the same stability properties as dG or cGP. Provided that suitable quadrature rules of Hermite type for evaluating the integrals in the variational conditions are used, the variational time discretization methods are connected to special collocation methods. For this case, we will present error estimates, numerical experiments, and a computationally cheap postprocessing that allows to increase both the accuracy and the global smoothness by one order.
We consider various filtered time discretizations of the periodic Korteweg--de Vries equation: a filtered exponential integrator, a filtered Lie splitting scheme as well as a filtered resonance based discretisation and establish convergence error estimates at low regularity. Our analysis is based on discrete Bourgain spaces and allows to prove convergence in $L^2$ for rough data $u_{0} \in H^s,$ $s>0$ with an explicit convergence rate.
We present a unified analysis for a family of variational time discretization methods, including discontinuous Galerkin methods and continuous Galerkin-Petrov methods, applied to non-stiff initial value problems. Besides the well-definedness of the methods, the global error and superconvergence properties are analyzed under rather weak abstract assumptions which also allow considerations of a wide variety of quadrature formulas. Numerical experiments illustrate and support the theoretical results.
Maximal parabolic $L^p$-regularity of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface is shown by pulling back the problem to the initial surface and studying the maximal $L^p$-regularity on a fixed surface. By freezing the coefficients in the parabolic equations at a fixed time and utilizing a perturbation argument around the freezed time, it is shown that backward difference time discretizations of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface along characteristic trajectories can preserve maximal $L^p$-regularity in the discrete setting. The result is applied to prove the stability an…
We analyze Galerkin discretizations of a new well-posed mixed space-time variational formulation of parabolic PDEs. For suitable pairs of finite element trial spaces, the resulting Galerkin operators are shown to be uniformly stable. The method is compared to two related space-time discretization methods introduced in [IMA J. Numer. Anal., 33(1) (2013), pp. 242-260] by R. Andreev and in [Comput. Methods Appl. Math., 15(4) (2015), pp. 551-566] by O. Steinbach.
We propose a monotone discretization for the integral fractional Laplace equation on bounded Lipschitz domains with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The method is inspired by a quadrature-based finite difference method of Huang and Oberman, but is defined on unstructured grids in arbitrary dimensions with a more flexible domain for approximating singular integral. The scale of the singular integral domain not only depends on the local grid size, but also on the distance to the boundary, since the Hölder coefficient of the solution deteriorates as it approaches the boundary. By usi…
Biharmonic wave equations are of importance to various applications including thin plate analyses. In this work, the numerical approximation of their solutions by a $C^1$-conforming in space and time finite element approach is proposed and analyzed. Therein, the smoothness properties of solutions to the continuous evolution problem is embodied. High potential of the presented approach for more sophisticated multi-physics and multi-scale systems is expected. Time discretization is based on a combined Galerkin and collocation technique. For space discretization the Bogner--Fox--Schmit element is…
Variational integrators have traditionally been constructed from the perspective of Lagrangian mechanics, but there have been recent efforts to adopt discrete variational approaches to the symplectic discretization of Hamiltonian mechanics using Hamiltonian variational integrators. In this paper, we will extend these results to the setting of Hamiltonian multisymplectic field theories. We demonstrate that one can use the notion of Type II generating functionals for Hamiltonian partial differential equations as the basis for systematically constructing Galerkin Hamiltonian variational integrato…

We present a well-posed ultra-weak space-time variational formulation for the time-dependent version of the linear Schrödinger equation with an instationary Hamiltonian. We prove optimal inf-sup stability and introduce a space-time Petrov-Galerkin discretization with optimal discrete inf-sup stability. We show norm-preservation of the ultra-weak formulation. The inf-sup optimal Petrov-Galerkin discretization is shown to be asymptotically norm-preserving, where the deviation is shown to be in the order of the discretization. In addition, we introduce a Galerkin discretization, which has subopti…
We present two semidiscretizations of the Camassa-Holm equation in periodic domains based on variational formulations and energy conservation. The first is a periodic version of an existing conservative multipeakon method on the real line, for which we propose efficient computation algorithms inspired by works of Camassa and collaborators. The second method, and of primary interest, is the periodic counterpart of a novel discretization of a two-component Camassa-Holm system based on variational principles in Lagrangian variables. Applying explicit ODE solvers to integrate in time, we compare t…
We present a finite element variational integrator for compressible flows. The numerical scheme is derived by discretizing, in a structure preserving way, the Lie group formulation of fluid dynamics on diffeomorphism groups and the associated variational principles. Given a triangulation on the fluid domain, the discrete group of diffeomorphisms is defined as a certain subgroup of the group of linear isomorphisms of a finite element space of functions. In this setting, discrete vector fields correspond to a certain subspace of the Lie algebra of this group. This subspace is shown to be isomorp…
Compatible discretizations, such as finite element exterior calculus, provide a discretization framework that respect the cohomological structure of the de Rham complex, which can be used to systematically construct stable mixed finite element methods. Multisymplectic variational integrators are a class of geometric numerical integrators for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories, and they yield methods that preserve the multisymplectic structure and momentum-conservation properties of the continuous system. In this paper, we investigate the synthesis of these two approaches, by constructin…
A recent paper [J. A. Evans, D. Kamensky, Y. Bazilevs, "Variational multiscale modeling with discretely divergence-free subscales", Computers & Mathematics with Applications, 80 (2020) 2517-2537] introduced a novel stabilized finite element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which combined residual-based stabilization of advection, energetic stability, and satisfaction of a discrete incompressibility condition. However, the convergence analysis and numerical tests of the cited work were subject to the restrictive assumption of a divergence-conforming choice of velocity and …
This article is concerned with the construction and analysis of new time discretizations for the KdV equation on a torus for low-regularity solutions below $H^1$. New harmonic analysis tools, including new averaging approximations to the exponential phase functions, new frequency decomposition techniques, and new trilinear estimates of the KdV operator, are established for the construction and analysis of time discretizations with higher convergence orders under low-regularity conditions. In addition, new techniques are introduced to establish stability estimates of time discretizations under …
Variational phase-field models of fracture are widely used to simulate nucleation and propagation of cracks in brittle materials. They are based on the approximation of the solutions of free-discontinuity fracture energy by two smooth function: a displacement and a damage field. Their numerical implementation is typically based on the discretization of both fields by nodal $\mathbb{P}^1$ Lagrange finite elements. In this article, we propose a nonconforming approximation by discontinuous elements for the displacement and nonconforming elements, whose gradient is more isotropic, for the damage. …
Stochastic evolution equations with compensated Poisson noise are considered in the variational approach with monotone and coercive coefficients. Here the Poisson noise is assumed to be time-homogeneous with $σ$-finite intensity measure on a metric space. By using finite element methods and Galerkin approximations, some explicit and implicit discretizations for this equation are presented and their convergence is proved. Polynomial growth condition and linear growth condition are assumed on the drift operator, respectively for the implicit and explicit schemes.
A high-accuracy time discretization is discussed to numerically solve the nonlinear fractional diffusion equation forced by a space-time white noise. The main purpose of this paper is to improve the temporal convergence rate by modifying the semi-implicit Euler scheme. The solution of the equation is only Hölder continuous in time, which is disadvantageous to improve the temporal convergence rate. Firstly, the system is transformed into an equivalent form having better regularity than the original one in time. But the regularity of nonlinear term remains unchanged. Then, combining Lagrange mea…
This paper presents the variational discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, in which the viscosity and the heat conduction terms are handled within the variational approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics as developed by one of the authors. In a first part, we review the variational framework for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) system in the smooth setting. In a second part, we review a discrete exterior calculus based on discrete diffeomorphisms then proceed to establish the spatially discretized variational principle for the NSF system through the use of this discre…
In this paper, we extend the work of Brenner and Sung [Math. Comp. 59, 321--338 (1992)] and present a regularity estimate for the elastic equations in concave domains. Based on the regularity estimate we prove that the constants in the error estimates of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations for the elastic equations/eigenvalue problem are independent of the Lame constant, which means the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations are locking-free. We also establish two kinds of two-grid discretization schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem and analyze that w…
A key advantage of isogeometric discretizations is their accurate and well-behaved eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes. For degree two and higher, however, optical branches of spurious outlier frequencies and modes may appear due to boundaries or reduced continuity at patch interfaces. In this paper, we introduce a variational approach based on perturbed eigenvalue analysis that eliminates outlier frequencies without negatively affecting the accuracy in the remainder of the spectrum and modes. We then propose a pragmatic iterative procedure that estimates the perturbation parameters in such a way …

We apply exponential Runge Kutta time discretizations to semilinear evolution equations $\frac { {\rm d} U}{{\rm d} t}=AU+B(U)$ posed on a Hilbert space ${\mathcal Y}$. Here $A$ is normal and generates a strongly continuous semigroup, and $B$ is assumed to be a smooth nonlinearity from ${\mathcal Y}_\ell = D(A^\ell)$ to itself, and $\ell \in I \subseteq [0,L]$, $L \geq 0$, $0,L \in I$. In particular the semilinear wave equation and nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary conditions or posed on ${\mathbb R}^d$ fit into this framework. We prove convergence of order $O(h^{\min(\ell,…
