We present a simple direct discretization for functionals used in the variational mesh generation and adaptation. Meshing functionals are discretized on simplicial meshes and the Jacobian matrix of the continuous coordinate transformation is approximated by the Jacobian matrices of affine mappings between elements. The advantage of this direct geometric discretization is that it preserves the basic geometric structure of the continuous functional, which is useful in preventing strong decoupling or loss of integral constraints satisfied by the functional. Moreover, the discretized functional is a function of the coordinates of mesh vertices and its derivatives have a simple analytical form, which allows a simple implementation of variational mesh generation and adaptation on computer. Since the variational mesh adaptation is the base for a number of adaptive moving mesh and mesh smoothing methods, the result in this work can be used to develop simple implementations of those methods. Numerical examples are given.
In the discretization of differential problems on complex geometrical domains, discretization methods based on polygonal and polyhedral elements are powerful tools. Adaptive mesh refinement for such kind of problems is very useful as well and states new issues, here tackled, concerning good quality mesh elements and reliability of the simulations. In this paper we numerically investigate optimality with respect to the number of degrees of freedom of the numerical solutions obtained by the different refinement strategies proposed. A geometrically complex geophysical problem is used as test prob…
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
Anisotropic mesh quality measures and anisotropic mesh adaptation are studied for polygonal meshes. Three sets of alignment and equidistribution measures are developed, one based on least squares fitting, one based on generalized barycentric mapping, and the other based on singular value decomposition of edge matrices. Numerical tests show that all three sets of mesh quality measures provide good measurements for the quality of polygonal meshes under given metrics. Based on one of these sets of quality measures and using a moving mesh partial differential equation, an anisotropic adaptive poly…
We propose and analyze a finite-difference discretization of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. It is known that if the discretization is made with respect to an underlying periodic lattice of spacing $δ$, the discretized functionals $Γ$-converge to the Mumford-Shah functional only if $δ\ll\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$ being the elliptic approximation parameter of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Discretizing with respect to stationary, ergodic and isotropic random lattices we prove this $Γ$-convergence result also for $δ\sim\varepsilon$, a regime at which the discretization with respect to …
We consider finite element discretizations of Maxwell's equations coupled with a non-local hydrodynamic Drude model that accurately accounts for electron motions in metallic nanostructures. Specifically, we focus on a posteriori error estimation and mesh adaptivity, which is of particular interest since the electromagnetic field usually exhibits strongly localized features near the interface between metals and their surrounding media. We propose a novel residual-based error estimator that is shown to be reliable and efficient. We also present a set of numerical examples where the estimator dri…

Discrete Fracture Network models are largely used for very large scale geological flow simulations. For this reason numerical methods require an investigation of tools for efficient parallel solutions on High Performance Computing systems. In this paper we discuss and compare several partitioning and reordering strategies, that result to be highly efficient and scalable, overperforming the classical mesh partitioning approach used to partition a conforming mesh among several processes.
A new anisotropic mesh adaptation strategy for finite element solution of elliptic differential equations is presented. It generates anisotropic adaptive meshes as quasi-uniform ones in some metric space, with the metric tensor being computed based on hierarchical a posteriori error estimates. A global hierarchical error estimate is employed in this study to obtain reliable directional information of the solution. Instead of solving the global error problem exactly, which is costly in general, we solve it iteratively using the symmetric Gauss--Seidel (GS) method. Numerical results show that a …
Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBM) stand out for their simplicity and computational efficiency while offering the possibility of simulating complex phenomena. While they are optimal for Cartesian meshes, adapted meshes have traditionally been a stumbling block since it is difficult to predict the right physics through various levels of meshes. In this work, we design a class of fully adaptive LBM methods with dynamic mesh adaptation and error control relying on multiresolution analysis. This wavelet-based approach allows to adapt the mesh based on the regularity of the solution and leads to a ver…
We propose and analyze computationally a new fictitious domain method, based on higher order space-time finite element discretizations, for the simulation of the nonstationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on evolving domains. The physical domain is embedded into a fixed computational mesh such that arbitrary intersections of the moving domain's boundaries with the background mesh occur. The potential of such cut finite element techniques for higher order space-time finite element methods has rarely been studied in the literature so far and deserves further elucidation. The key ingre…
In this paper we present an algorithm that is able to generate locally regular node layouts with spatially variable nodal density for interiors of arbitrary domains in two, three and higher dimensions. It is demonstrated that the generated node distributions are suitable to use in the RBF-FD method, which is demonstrated by solving thermo-fluid problem in 2D and 3D. Additionally, local minimal spacing guarantees are proven for both uniform and variable nodal densities. The presented algorithm has time complexity $O(N)$ to generate $N$ nodes with constant nodal spacing and $O(N \log N)$ to gene…
The present work aims at the application of finite element discretizations to a class of equilibrium problems involving moving constraints. Therefore, a Moreau--Yosida based regularization technique, controlled by a parameter, is discussed and, using a generalized $Γ$-convergence concept, a priori convergence results are derived. The latter technique is applied to the discretization of the regularized problems and is used to prove the convergence to the orginal equilibrium problem, when both -- regularization and discretization -- are imposed simultaneously. In addition, a primal-dual gap tech…

A finite element-based image segmentation strategy enhanced by an anisotropic mesh adaptation procedure is presented. The methodology relies on a split Bregman algorithm for the minimisation of a region-based energy functional and on an anisotropic recovery-based error estimate to drive mesh adaptation. More precisely, a Bayesian energy functional is considered to account for image spatial information, ensuring that the methodology is able to identify inhomogeneous spatial patterns in complex images. In addition, the anisotropic mesh adaptation guarantees a sharp detection of the interface bet…
In the past decade, a combination of unfitted finite elements (or XFEM) with the Nitsche method has become a popular discretization method for elliptic interface problems. This development started with the introduction and analysis of this Nitsche-XFEM technique in the paper [A. Hansbo, P. Hansbo, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 191 (2002)]. In general, the resulting linear systems have very large condition numbers, which depend not only on the mesh size $h$, but also on how the interface intersects the mesh. This paper is concerned with the design and analysis of optimal preconditioners fo…
A second-order face-centred finite volume strategy on general meshes is proposed. The method uses a mixed formulation in which a constant approximation of the unknown is computed on the faces of the mesh. Such information is then used to solve a set of problems, independent cell-by-cell, to retrieve the local values of the solution and its gradient. The main novelty of this approach is the introduction of a new basis function, utilised for the linear approximation of the primal variable in each cell. Contrary to the commonly used nodal basis, the proposed basis is suitable for computations on …

As the resolution of digital images increase significantly, the processing of images becomes more challenging in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we consider image segmentation by solving a partial differentiation equation (PDE) model based on the Mumford-Shah functional. We develop a new algorithm by combining anisotropic mesh adaptation for image representation and finite element method for solving the PDE model. Comparing to traditional algorithms solved by finite difference method, our algorithm provides faster and better results without the need to resizing the images to l…

For the first time we introduce an error estimator for the numerical approximation of the equations describing the dynamics of sea ice. The idea of the estimator is to identify different error contributions coming from spatial and temporal discretization as well as from the splitting in time of the ice momentum equations from further parts of the coupled system. The novelty of the error estimator lies in the consideration of the splitting error, which turns out to be dominant with increasing mesh resolution. Errors are measured in user specified functional outputs like the total sea ice extent…
It is known that the solution of a conservative steady-state two-sided fractional diffusion problem can exhibit singularities near the boundaries. As consequence of this, and due to the conservative nature of the problem, we adopt a finite volume elements discretization approach over a generic non-uniform mesh. We focus on grids mapped by a smooth function which consist in a combination of a graded mesh near the singularity and a uniform mesh where the solution is smooth. Such a choice gives rise to Toeplitz-like discretization matrices and thus allows a low computational cost of the matrix-ve…
We propose a mesh adaptation procedure for Cartesian quadtree meshes, to discretize scalar advection-diffusion-reaction problems. The adaptation process is driven by a recovery-based a posteriori estimator for the $L^2(Ω)$-norm of the discretization error, based on suitable higher order approximations of both the solution and the associated gradient. In particular, a metric-based approach exploits the information furnished by the estimator to iteratively predict the new adapted mesh. The new mesh adaptation algorithm is successfully assessed on different configurations, and turns out to perfor…
This work presents a novel interpolation-free mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations within the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework. For the spatial discretization, we consider a residual distribution scheme, which provides a pretty simple way to achieve high order accuracy on unstructured grids. Thanks to a special interpretation of the mesh connectivity changes as a series of fictitious continuous deformations, we can enforce by construction the so-called geometric conservation law, which helps to avoid spurious oscillations while solving the governing equations over dynamic d…
