We present a comparative numerical study for three functionals used for variational mesh adaptation. One of them is a generalisation of Winslow's variable diffusion functional while the others are based on equidistribution and alignment. These functionals are known to have nice theoretical properties and work well for most mesh adaptation problems either as a stand-alone variational method or combined within the moving mesh framework. Their performance is investigated numerically in terms of equidistribution and alignment mesh quality measures. Numerical results in 2D and 3D are presented.
A new topography adapted mesh generation process tailored to simulate Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) flows on complex terrains is presented. The mesher is fully automatic given: the maximum and minimum surface mesh size, the size of the first element of the boundary layer, the maximum size in the boundary layer and the size at the top of the domain. The following contributions to the meshing workflow for ABL flow simulation are performed. First, we present a smooth topography modeling to query first and second order geometry derivatives. Second, we propose a new adaptive meshing procedure to…
We present the near-Maximal Algorithm for Poisson-disk Sampling (nMAPS) to generate point distributions for variable resolution Delaunay triangular and tetrahedral meshes in two and three-dimensions, respectively. nMAPS consists of two principal stages. In the first stage, an initial point distribution is produced using a cell-based rejection algorithm. In the second stage, holes in the sample are detected using an efficient background grid and filled in to obtain a near-maximal covering. Extensive testing shows that nMAPS generates a variable resolution mesh in linear run time with the number…

We present numerical experiments for geophysics electromagnetic (EM) modeling based upon high-order edge elements and supervised $h+p$ refinement approaches on massively parallel computers. Our high-order $h+p$ refinement strategy is based on and extends the PETGEM code. We focus on the performance study in terms of accuracy, convergence rate, and computational effort to solve real-life 3D setups based on synthetic and experimental data for energy reservoir characterization. These test cases show variable resolution discretization needs and realistic physical parameters. In general, our numeri…
This paper presents a novel spline-based meshing technique that allows for usage of boundary-conforming meshes for unsteady flow and temperature simulations in co-rotating twin-screw extruders. Spline-based descriptions of arbitrary screw geometries are generated using Elliptic Grid Generation. They are evaluated in a number of discrete points to yield a coarse classical mesh. The use of a special control mapping allows to fine-tune properties of the coarse mesh like orthogonality at the boundaries. The coarse mesh is used as a 'scaffolding' to generate a boundary-conforming mesh out of a fine…

Trimming consists of cutting away parts of a geometric domain, without reconstructing a global parametrization (meshing). It is a widely used operation in computer aided design, which generates meshes that are unfitted with the described physical object. This paper develops an adaptive mesh refinement strategy on trimmed geometries in the context of hierarchical B-spline based isogeometric analysis. A residual a posteriori estimator of the energy norm of the numerical approximation error is derived, in the context of the Poisson equation. The estimator is proven to be reliable, independently o…
