We present a new iterative technique based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation and smoothing for the generation and smoothing of curvilinear meshes from straight-sided or other curvilinear meshes. Our technique approximates the coordinate deformation maps in both the interior and boundary of the curvilinear output mesh by using only scattered nodes on the boundary of the input mesh as data sites in an interpolation problem. Our technique produces high-quality meshes in the deformed domain even when the deformation maps are singular due to a new iterative algorithm based on modification of the RBF shape parameter. Due to the use of RBF interpolation, our technique is applicable to both 2D and 3D curvilinear mesh generation without significant modification.
We develop a fourth order accurate finite difference method for the three dimensional elastic wave equation in isotropic media with the piecewise smooth material property. In our model, the material property can be discontinuous at curved interfaces. The governing equations are discretized in second order form on curvilinear meshes by using a fourth order finite difference operator satisfying a summation-by-parts property. The method is energy stable and high order accurate. The highlight is that mesh sizes can be chosen according to the velocity structure of the material so that computational…
Positivity-Preserving and Entropy-Stable Oscillation-Eliminating DGSEM for the Compressible Euler Equations on Curvilinear Meshes with Adaptive Mesh Refinement
In this paper, a high order free-stream preserving finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is developed for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on curvilinear meshes. Under the constrained transport framework, magnetic potential evolved by a Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equation is introduced to control the divergence error. In this work, we use the alternative formulation of WENO scheme [10] for the nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law, and design a novel method to solve the magnetic potential. Theoretical derivation and numerical results show that the scheme …
$H^1$-conforming Galerkin methods on polygonal meshes such as VEM, BEM-FEM and Trefftz-FEM employ local finite element functions that are implicitly defined as solutions of Poisson problems having polynomial source and boundary data. Recently, such methods have been extended to allow for mesh cells that are curvilinear polygons. Such extensions present new challenges for determining suitable quadratures. We describe an approach for integrating products of these implicitly defined functions, as well as products of their gradients, that reduces integrals on cells to integrals along their boundar…
The Modified Direct Method (MDM) is an iterative mesh smoothing method for smoothing planar and surface meshes, which is developed from the non-iterative smoothing method originated by Balendran [1]. When smooth planar meshes, the performance of the MDM is effectively identical to that of Laplacian smoothing, for triangular and quadrilateral meshes; however, the MDM outperforms Laplacian smoothing for tri-quad meshes. When smooth surface meshes, for trian-gular, quadrilateral and quad-dominant mixed meshes, the mean quality(MQ) of all mesh elements always increases and the mean square error (M…
When time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) are solved numerically in a domain with curved boundary or on a curved surface, mesh error and geometric approximation error caused by the inaccurate location of vertices and other interior grid points, respectively, could be the main source of the inaccuracy and instability of the numerical solutions of PDEs. The role of these geometric errors in deteriorating the stability and particularly the conservation properties are largely unknown, which seems to necessitate very fine meshes especially to remove geometric approximation error. Th…

This paper develops entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh schemes for the 2D and 3D special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) equations. They are built on the ES finite volume approximation of the RHD equations in curvilinear coordinates, the discrete geometric conservation laws, and the mesh adaptation implemented by iteratively solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of the mesh adaption functional in the computational domain with suitably chosen monitor functions. First, a sufficient condition is proved for the two-point entropy conservative (EC) flux, by mimicking the derivation of the conti…
We present a Trefftz-type finite element method on meshes consisting of curvilinear polygons. Local basis functions are computed using integral equation techniques that allow for the efficient and accurate evaluation of quantities needed in the formation of local stiffness matrices. To define our local finite element spaces in the presence of curved edges, we must also properly define what it means for a function defined on a curved edge to be "polynomial" of a given degree on that edge. We consider two natural choices, before settling on the one that yields the inclusion of complete polynomia…
In this paper, we develop a new free-stream preserving (FP) method for high-order upwind conservative finite-difference (FD) schemes on the curvilinear grids. This FP method is constrcuted by subtracting a reference cell-face flow state from each cell-center value in the local stencil of the original upwind conservative FD schemes, which effectively leads to a reformulated dissipation. It is convenient to implement this method, as it does not require to modify the original forms of the upwind schemes. In addition, the proposed method removes the constraint in the traditional FP conservative FD…
In this work a non-conservative balance law formulation is considered that encompasses the rotating, compressible Euler equations for dry atmospheric flows. We develop a semi-discretely entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin method on curvilinear meshes using a generalization of flux differencing for numerical fluxes in fluctuation form. The method uses the skew-hybridized formulation of the element operators to ensure that, even in the presence of under-integration on curvilinear meshes, the resulting discretization is entropy stable. Several atmospheric flow test cases in one, two, and three …
The smoothing technique of Savitzky and Golay is extended to data defined on multidimensional meshes. A smoothness-increasing accuracy-conserving (SIAC) filter is defined that is suitable for use with finite-element computation.
Four adaptations of the smoothed aggregation algebraic multigrid (SA-AMG) method are proposed with an eye towards improving the convergence and robustness of the solver in situations when the discretization matrix contains many weak connections. These weak connections can cause higher than expected levels of fill-in within the coarse discretization matrices and can also give rise to sub-optimal smoothing within the prolongator smoothing phase. These smoothing drawbacks are due to the relatively small size of some diagonal entries within the filtered matrix that one obtains after dropping the w…
This work describes a concise algorithm for the generation of triangular meshes with the help of standard adaptive finite element methods. We demonstrate that a generic adaptive finite element solver can be repurposed into a triangular mesh generator if a robust mesh smoothing algorithm is applied between the mesh refinement steps. We present an implementation of the mesh generator and demonstrate the resulting meshes via examples.
This work studies three multigrid variants for matrix-free finite-element computations on locally refined meshes: geometric local smoothing, geometric global coarsening, and polynomial global coarsening. We have integrated the algorithms into the same framework-the open-source finite-element library deal.II-, which allows us to make fair comparisons regarding their implementation complexity, computational efficiency, and parallel scalability as well as to compare the measurements with theoretically derived performance models. Serial simulations and parallel weak and strong scaling on up to 147…
We propose and analyze optimal additive multilevel solvers for isogeometric discretizations of scalar elliptic problems for locally refined T-meshes. Applying the refinement strategy in Morgenstern and Peterseim (2015, Comput. Aided Geom. Design, 34, 50-66) we can guarantee that the obtained T-meshes have a multilevel structure, and that the associated T-splines are analysis-suitable, for which we can define a dual basis and a stable projector. Taking advantage of the multilevel structure, we develop two BPX preconditioners: the first on the basis of local smoothing only for the functions affe…
A high order finite difference method is proposed for unstructured meshes to simulate compressible inviscid/viscous flows with/without discontinuities. In this method, based on the strong form equation, the divergence of the flux on each vertex is computed directly from fluxes nearby by means of high order least-square. In order to capture discontinuities, numerical flux of high order accuracy is calculated on each edge and serves as supporting data of the least-square computation of the divergence. The high accuracy of the numerical flux depends on the high order WENO interpolation on each ed…
