This paper presents a method to generate valid high order meshes with optimized geometrical accuracy. The high order meshing procedure starts with a linear mesh, that is subsequently curved without taking care of the validity of the high order elements. An optimization procedure is then used to both untangle invalid elements and optimize the geometrical accuracy of the mesh. Standard measures of the distance between curves are considered to evaluate the geometrical accuracy in planar two-dimensional meshes, but they prove computationally too costly for optimization purposes. A fast estimate of the geometrical accuracy, based on Taylor expansions of the curves, is introduced. An unconstrained optimization procedure based on this estimate is shown to yield significant improvements in the geometrical accuracy of high order meshes, as measured by the standard Haudorff distance between the geometrical model and the mesh. Several examples illustrate the beneficial impact of this method on CFD solutions, with a particular role of the enhanced mesh boundary smoothness.
In this paper, a high order free-stream preserving finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is developed for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on curvilinear meshes. Under the constrained transport framework, magnetic potential evolved by a Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equation is introduced to control the divergence error. In this work, we use the alternative formulation of WENO scheme [10] for the nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law, and design a novel method to solve the magnetic potential. Theoretical derivation and numerical results show that the scheme …
The hybrid kinetic-ion fluid-electron plasma model is widely used to study challenging multi-scale problems in space and laboratory plasma physics. Here, a novel conservative scheme for this model employing implicit particle-in-cell techniques is extended to arbitrary coordinate systems via curvilinear maps from logical to physical space. The scheme features a fully non-linear electromagnetic formulation with a multi-rate time advance - including sub-cycling and orbit-averaging for the kinetic ions. By careful choice of compatible particle-based kinetic-ion and mesh-based fluid-electron discre…

The recently proposed high-order TENO scheme [Fu et al., Journal of Computational Physics, 305, pp.333-359] has shown great potential in predicting complex fluids owing to the novel weighting strategy, which ensures the high-order accuracy, the low numerical dissipation, and the sharp shock-capturing capability. However, the applications are still restricted to simple geometries with Cartesian or curvilinear meshes. In this work, a new class of high-order shock-capturing TENO schemes for unstructured meshes are proposed. Similar to the standard TENO schemes and some variants of WENO schemes, t…
We present a new fourth-order, finite-volume hydrodynamics code named Apsara. The code employs a high-order, finite-volume method for mapped coordinates with extensions for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. Apsara can handle arbitrary structured curvilinear meshes in three spatial dimensions. The code has successfully passed several hydrodynamic test problems, including the advection of a Gaussian density profile and a nonlinear vortex and the propagation of linear acoustic waves. For these test problems, Apsara produces fourth-order accurate results in case of smooth grid mappings. The …
Finite difference method was extended to unstructured meshes to solve Euler equations. The spatial discretization is made of two steps. First, numerical fluxes are computed at the middle point of each edge with high order accuracy. In this step, a one-dimensional curvilinear stencil is assembled for each edge to perform one-dimensional fast non-uniform WENO interpolation derived in this paper, which is much easier and faster than multi-dimensional interpolation. The second step is to compute the divergence of fluxes at each vertex from the fluxes at nearby edges and vertices by least square ap…
A high fidelity flow simulation for complex geometries for high Reynolds number ($Re$) flow is still very challenging, which requires more powerful computational capability of HPC system. However, the development of HPC with traditional CPU architecture suffers bottlenecks due to its high power consumption and technical difficulties. Heterogeneous architecture computation is raised to be a promising solution of difficulties of HPC development. GPU accelerating technology has been utilized in low order scheme CFD solvers on structured grid and high order scheme solvers on unstructured meshes. T…
A high order finite difference method is proposed for unstructured meshes to simulate compressible inviscid/viscous flows with/without discontinuities. In this method, based on the strong form equation, the divergence of the flux on each vertex is computed directly from fluxes nearby by means of high order least-square. In order to capture discontinuities, numerical flux of high order accuracy is calculated on each edge and serves as supporting data of the least-square computation of the divergence. The high accuracy of the numerical flux depends on the high order WENO interpolation on each ed…
We present a new high-order accurate Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin (DG) hydrodynamic method to simulate material dynamics (for e.g., gasses, fluids, and solids) with up to fourth-order accuracy on cubic meshes. The variables, such as specific volume, velocity, specific total energy, and deformation gradient fields within a cell, are represented with a polynomial constructed from a novel hierarchical orthogonal basis about the center of mass, which decouples the moments of the solution because the mass matrix is diagonal. The discontinuity in the polynomials at the cell boundary is addresse…
Applying high-order finite-difference schemes, like the extensively used linear-upwind or WENO schemes, to curvilinear grids can be problematic. The geometrically induced error from grid Jacobian and metrics evaluation can pollute the flow field, and degrade the accuracy or cause the simulation failure even when uniform flow imposed, i.e. free-stream preserving problem. In order to address this issue, a method for general linear-upwind and WENO schemes preserving free-stream on stationary curvilinear grids is proposed. Following Lax-Friedrichs splitting, this method rewrites the numerical flux…
We describe a semi-structured method for the generation of high-order hybrid meshes suited for the simulation of high Reynolds number flows. This is achieved through the use of highly stretched elements in the viscous boundary layers near the wall surfaces. CADfix is used to first repair any possible defects in the CAD geometry and then generate a medial object based decomposition of the domain that wraps the wall boundaries with partitions suitable for the generation of either prismatic or hexahedral elements. The latter is a novel distinctive feature of the method that permits to obtain well…
Efficient simulation of plasmas in various contexts often involves the use of meshes that conform to the intrinsic geometry of the system under consideration. We present here a description of a new magnetohydrodynamic code, Gamera (Grid Agnostic MHD for Extended Research Applications), designed to combine geometric flexibility with high-order spatial reconstruction and constrained transport to maintain the divergence-free magnetic field. Gamera carries on the legacy of its predecessor, the LFM (Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry), a research code whose use in space physics has spanned three decades. At the t…
A finite element solution of an ion channel dielectric continuum model such as Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) and a system of Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations (PNP) requires tetrahedral meshes for an ion channel protein region, a membrane region, and an ionic solvent region as well as an interface fitted irregular tetrahedral mesh of a simulation box domain. However, generating these meshes is very difficult and highly technical due to the related three regions having very complex geometrical shapes. Currently, an ion channel mesh generation software package developed in Lu's research group i…
The main result in this paper is a provably entropy stable shock capturing approach for the high order entropy stable DGSEM based on a hybrid blending with a subcell low order variant. Since it is possible to rewrite a high order SBP operator into an equivalent conservative finite volume form, we were able to design a low order scheme directly with the LGL nodes that is compatible to the discrete entropy analysis used for the proof of the entropy stable DGSEM. Furthermore, we present a hybrid low order/high order discretisation where it is possible to seamlessly blend between the two approache…
