Finite difference method was extended to unstructured meshes to solve Euler equations. The spatial discretization is made of two steps. First, numerical fluxes are computed at the middle point of each edge with high order accuracy. In this step, a one-dimensional curvilinear stencil is assembled for each edge to perform one-dimensional fast non-uniform WENO interpolation derived in this paper, which is much easier and faster than multi-dimensional interpolation. The second step is to compute the divergence of fluxes at each vertex from the fluxes at nearby edges and vertices by least square approximation of multi-dimensional polynomials. The order of the WENO interpolation in the first step and the degree of the polynomial in the second step determined the order of accuracy of the spatial scheme. After that, explicit RungeKutta time discrete scheme is used to update conservative variables. Several canonical numerical cases were solved to test the accuracy, performance and the capability of shock capturing of the developed method.
We present a generalization of standard Yee approach for Cauchy problem in electrodynamic simulations on unstructured triangulated mesh. In the paper the whole flow from mesh creation to actual simulation is presented. The proposed computation flow is parallel ready and can be implemented for distributed systems (computation servers, GPU-s, etc.). We studied the influence of non-regular triangulation on stability and dispersion properties of numerical solution.
We propose the application of the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) technique to a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the simulation of moving boundary problems on unstructured meshes. To that end, the kinetic equations are mapped from a moving physical domain into a fixed computational domain. The resulting equations in the computational domain are then numerically solved using the second-order accurate finite element reconstruction on an unstructured mesh. It is shown that the problem regarding the geometric conservation law (GCL), which needs a special treatment in the ALE Navier-St…
We present a novel method for calculating interface curvature on 3D unstructured meshes from piecewise-linear interface reconstructions typically generated in the volume of fluid method. Interface curvature is a necessary quantity to calculate in order to model surface tension driven flow. Curvature needs only to be computed in cells containing an interface. The approach requires a stencil containing only neighbors sharing a node with a target cell, and calculates curvature from a least-squares paraboloid fit to the interface reconstructions. This involves solving a 6x6 symmetric linear system…
The theory and application of numerical methods for unstructured meshes have been improved significantly in recent years. Because the grids can be place arbitrarily in space, unstructured meshes can provide much higher spatial resolution than regular meshes. The built-in nature of mesh adaptivity for unstructured meshes gives one way to simulate highly dynamic, hierarchical problems involving both collisionless dark matter and collisional gas dynamics. In this paper, we describe algorithms to construct unstructured meshes from a set of points with periodic boundary conditions through Delaunay …
We present a new method for numerical hydrodynamics which uses a multidimensional generalisation of the Roe solver and operates on an unstructured triangular mesh. The main advantage over traditional methods based on Riemann solvers, which commonly use one-dimensional flux estimates as building blocks for a multidimensional integration, is its inherently multidimensional nature, and as a consequence its ability to recognise multidimensional stationary states that are not hydrostatic. A second novelty is the focus on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). By tailoring the algorithms specifically to …
This work is an attempt to develop an approximate scheme for estimating the volume-based truncation errors in the finite volume analysis of laminar flows. The volume-based truncation error is the net flow error across the faces of a control volume. Unfortunately, truncation error is not a natural outcome of the finite volume solution and needs to be estimated separately. Previous works in the literature estimate truncation error using either higher order interpolation schemes, higher order discretization schemes, or neglected terms in the discretization scheme. The first two approaches become …
In this paper we consider a level set reinitialization technique based on a high-order, local discontinuous Galerkin method on unstructured triangular meshes. A finite volume based subcell stabilization is used to improve the nonlinear stability of the method. Instead of the standard hyperbolic level set reinitialization, the flow of time Eikonal equation is discretized to construct an approximate signed distance function. Using the Eikonal equation removes the regularization parameter in the standard approach which allows more predictable behavior and faster convergence speeds around the inte…
As an extension of previous fourth-order compact gas kinetic scheme (GKS) on structured meshes (Ji et al. 2018), this work is about the development of a third-order compact GKS on unstructured meshes for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes solutions. Based on the time accurate high-order gas-kinetic evolution solution at a cell interface, the time dependent gas distribution function in GKS provides not only the flux function and its time derivative at a cell interface, but also the time accurate flow variables there at next time level. As a result, besides updating the conservative flow v…
We present a practical approach for constructing meshes of general rough surfaces with given autocorrelation functions based on the unstructured meshes of nominally smooth surfaces. The approach builds on a well-known method to construct correlated random numbers from white noise using a decomposition of the autocorrelation matrix. We discuss important details arising in practical applications to the physicalmodeling of surface roughness and provide a software implementation to enable use of the approach with a broad range of numerical methods in various fields of science and engineering.
The recently proposed high-order TENO scheme [Fu et al., Journal of Computational Physics, 305, pp.333-359] has shown great potential in predicting complex fluids owing to the novel weighting strategy, which ensures the high-order accuracy, the low numerical dissipation, and the sharp shock-capturing capability. However, the applications are still restricted to simple geometries with Cartesian or curvilinear meshes. In this work, a new class of high-order shock-capturing TENO schemes for unstructured meshes are proposed. Similar to the standard TENO schemes and some variants of WENO schemes, t…
In this numerical study, an original approach to simulate non-isothermal viscoelastic fluid flows at high Weissenberg numbers is presented. Stable computations over a wide range of Weissenberg numbers are assured by using the root conformation approach in a finite volume framework on general unstructured meshes. The numerical stabilization framework is extended to consider thermo-rheological properties in Oldroyd-B type viscoelastic fluids. The temperature dependence of the viscoelastic fluid is modeled with the time-temperature superposition principle. Both Arrhenius and WLF shift factors can…
Magnetic fields play an important role in many astrophysical systems and a detailed understanding of their impact on the gas dynamics requires robust numerical simulations. Here we present a new method to evolve the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on unstructured static and moving meshes that preserves the magnetic field divergence-free constraint to machine precision. The method overcomes the major problems of using a cleaning scheme on the magnetic fields instead, which is non-conservative, not fully Galilean invariant, does not eliminate divergence errors completely, and may produ…
ADER (Arbitrary DERivative in space and time) methods for the time-evolution of hyperbolic conservation laws have recently generated a fair bit of interest. The ADER time update can be carried out in a single step, which is desirable in many applications. However, prior papers have focused on the theory while downplaying implementation details. The purpose of the present paper is to make ADER schemes accessible by providing two useful formulations of the method as well as their implementation details on three-dimensional structured meshes. We therefore provide a detailed formulation of ADER sc…
This paper presents a highly robust third-order accurate finite volume weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) method for special relativistic hydrodynamics on unstructured triangular meshes. We rigorously prove that the proposed method is physical-constraint-preserving (PCP), namely, always preserves the positivity of the pressure and the rest-mass density as well as the subluminal constraint on the fluid velocity. The method is built on a highly efficient compact WENO reconstruction on unstructured meshes, a simple PCP limiter, the provably PCP property of the Harten--Lax--van Leer flux,…
We propose a nonlinear manifold learning technique based on deep convolutional autoencoders that is appropriate for model order reduction of physical systems in complex geometries. Convolutional neural networks have proven to be highly advantageous for compressing data arising from systems demonstrating a slow-decaying Kolmogorov n-width. However, these networks are restricted to data on structured meshes. Unstructured meshes are often required for performing analyses of real systems with complex geometry. Our custom graph convolution operators based on the available differential operators for…
A computationally accurate and efficient numerical method under a unified framework is crucial to various multi-scale scientific and engineering problems. So far, many numerical methods have encountered various challenges in efficiently solving multi-scale non-equilibrium flows that cover a wide range of Knudsen numbers, especially the three-dimensional hypersonic flows. In this study, a conservative implicit scheme is further presented for three-dimensional steady flows of diatomic gases in all flow regimes, where both the implicit microscopic kinetic equations based on Rykov model and the co…
A cell-centered implicit-explicit updated Lagrangian finite volume scheme on unstructured grids is proposed for a unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum fluid and solid mechanics. The scheme provably respects the stiff relaxation limits of the continuous model at the fully discrete level, thus it is asymptotic preserving. Furthermore, the GCL is satisfied by a compatible discretization that makes use of a nodal solver to compute vertex-based fluxes that are used both for the motion of the computational mesh as well as for the time evolution of the governing PDEs. Second-order …
In this paper we propose the first better than second order accurate method in space and time for the numerical solution of the resistive relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RRMHD) equations on unstructured meshes in multiple space dimensions. The nonlinear system under consideration is purely hyperbolic and contains a source term, the one for the evolution of the electric field, that becomes stiff for low values of the resistivity. For the spatial discretization we propose to use high order $\PNM$ schemes as introduced in \cite{Dumbser2008} for hyperbolic conservation laws and a high order acc…
A high order finite difference method is proposed for unstructured meshes to simulate compressible inviscid/viscous flows with/without discontinuities. In this method, based on the strong form equation, the divergence of the flux on each vertex is computed directly from fluxes nearby by means of high order least-square. In order to capture discontinuities, numerical flux of high order accuracy is calculated on each edge and serves as supporting data of the least-square computation of the divergence. The high accuracy of the numerical flux depends on the high order WENO interpolation on each ed…
This paper investigates the application of mesh adaptation techniques in the Non-Ideal Compressible Fluid Dynamic (NICFD) regime, a region near the vapor-liquid saturation curve where the flow behavior significantly departs from the ideal gas model, as indicated by a value of the fundamental derivative of gasdynamics less than one. A recent interpolation-free finite-volume adaptive scheme is exploited to modify the grid connectivity in a conservative way, and the governing equations for compressible inviscid flows are solved within the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework by including speci…
