When time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) are solved numerically in a domain with curved boundary or on a curved surface, mesh error and geometric approximation error caused by the inaccurate location of vertices and other interior grid points, respectively, could be the main source of the inaccuracy and instability of the numerical solutions of PDEs. The role of these geometric errors in deteriorating the stability and particularly the conservation properties are largely unknown, which seems to necessitate very fine meshes especially to remove geometric approximation error. This paper aims to investigate the effect of geometric approximation error by using a high-order mesh with negligible geometric approximation error, even for high order polynomial of order p. To achieve this goal, the high-order mesh generator from CAD geometry called NekMesh is adapted for surface mesh generation in comparison to traditional meshes with non-negligible geometric approximation error. Two types of numerical tests are considered. Firstly, the accuracy of differential operators is compared for various p on a curved element of the sphere. Secondly, by applying the method of moving frames, four different time-dependent PDEs on the sphere are numerically solved to investigate the impact of geometric approximation error on the accuracy and conservation properties of high-order numerical schemes for PDEs on the sphere.
We develop a fourth order accurate finite difference method for the three dimensional elastic wave equation in isotropic media with the piecewise smooth material property. In our model, the material property can be discontinuous at curved interfaces. The governing equations are discretized in second order form on curvilinear meshes by using a fourth order finite difference operator satisfying a summation-by-parts property. The method is energy stable and high order accurate. The highlight is that mesh sizes can be chosen according to the velocity structure of the material so that computational…

Additional grid points are often introduced for the higher-order polynomial of a numerical solution with curvilinear elements. However, those points are likely to be located slightly outside the domain, even when the vertices of the curvilinear elements lie within the curved domain. This misallocation of grid points generates a mesh error, called geometric approximation error. This error is smaller than the discretization error but large enough to significantly degrade a long-time integration. Moreover, this mesh error is considered to be the leading cause of conservation error. Two novel sche…

This paper develops entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh schemes for the 2D and 3D special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) equations. They are built on the ES finite volume approximation of the RHD equations in curvilinear coordinates, the discrete geometric conservation laws, and the mesh adaptation implemented by iteratively solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of the mesh adaption functional in the computational domain with suitably chosen monitor functions. First, a sufficient condition is proved for the two-point entropy conservative (EC) flux, by mimicking the derivation of the conti…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
We present a Trefftz-type finite element method on meshes consisting of curvilinear polygons. Local basis functions are computed using integral equation techniques that allow for the efficient and accurate evaluation of quantities needed in the formation of local stiffness matrices. To define our local finite element spaces in the presence of curved edges, we must also properly define what it means for a function defined on a curved edge to be "polynomial" of a given degree on that edge. We consider two natural choices, before settling on the one that yields the inclusion of complete polynomia…
Standard numerical methods for hyperbolic PDEs require for stability a CFL-condition which implies that the time step size depends on the size of the elements of the mesh. On cut-cell meshes, elements can become arbitrarily small and thus the time step size cannot take the size of small cut-cells into account but has to be chosen based on the background mesh elements. A remedy for this is the so called DoD (domain of dependence) stabilization for which several favorable theoretical and numerical properties have been shown in one and two space dimensions. Up to now the method is restricted to s…
In this paper, we propose a meshfree method based on the Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) to solve both classical and fractional PDEs. The proposed method takes advantage of the analytical Laplacian of Gaussian functions so as to accommodate the discretization of the classical and fractional Laplacian in a single framework and avoid the large computational cost for numerical evaluation of the fractional derivatives. These important merits distinguish it from other numerical methods for fractional PDEs. Moreover, our method is simple and easy to handle complex geometry and local refinement,…
We propose a state redistribution method for high order discontinuous Galerkin methods on curvilinear embedded boundary grids. State redistribution relaxes the overly restrictive CFL condition that results from arbitrarily small cut cells and explicit time stepping. Thus, the scheme can take time steps that are proportional to the size of cells in the background grid. The discontinuous Galerkin scheme is stabilized by postprocessing the numerical solution after each stage or step of an explicit time stepping method. This is done by temporarily merging the small cells into larger, possibly over…
This paper develops high-order accurate entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes for the two- and three-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations, which is the high-order accurate extension of [J.M. Duan and H.Z. Tang, Entropy stable adaptive moving mesh schemes for 2D and 3D special relativistic hydrodynamics, J. Comput. Phys., 426(2021), 109949]. The key point is the derivation of the higher-order accurate entropy conservative (EC) and ES finite difference schemes in the curvilinear coordinates by carefully dealing …
This article considers the extension of two-grid $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for the numerical approximation of second-order quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems of monotone type to the case when agglomerated polygonal/polyhedral meshes are employed for the coarse mesh approximation. We recall that within the two-grid setting, while it is necessary to solve a nonlinear problem on the coarse approximation space, only a linear problem must be computed on the original fine finite element space. In this article, the coarse space will be constructed by agglome…
In this paper, we develop a new free-stream preserving (FP) method for high-order upwind conservative finite-difference (FD) schemes on the curvilinear grids. This FP method is constrcuted by subtracting a reference cell-face flow state from each cell-center value in the local stencil of the original upwind conservative FD schemes, which effectively leads to a reformulated dissipation. It is convenient to implement this method, as it does not require to modify the original forms of the upwind schemes. In addition, the proposed method removes the constraint in the traditional FP conservative FD…
In this article, an advanced differential quadrature (DQ) approach is proposed for the high-dimensional multi-term time-space-fractional partial differential equations (TSFPDEs) on convex domains. Firstly, a family of high-order difference schemes is introduced to discretize the time-fractional derivative and a semi-discrete scheme for the considered problems is presented. We strictly prove its unconditional stability and error estimate. Further, we derive a class of DQ formulas to evaluate the fractional derivatives, which employs radial basis functions (RBFs) as test functions. Using these D…

We consider a mesh-based approach for training a neural network to produce field predictions of solutions to parametric partial differential equations (PDEs). This approach contrasts current approaches for "neural PDE solvers" that employ collocation-based methods to make point-wise predictions of solutions to PDEs. This approach has the advantage of naturally enforcing different boundary conditions as well as ease of invoking well-developed PDE theory -- including analysis of numerical stability and convergence -- to obtain capacity bounds for our proposed neural networks in discretized domai…
In this paper, we want to clarify the Gibbs phenomenon when continuous and discontinuous finite elements are used to approximate discontinuous or nearly discontinuous PDE solutions from the approximation point of view. For a simple step function, we explicitly compute its continuous and discontinuous piecewise constant or linear projections on discontinuity matched or non-matched meshes. For the simple discontinuity-aligned mesh case, piecewise discontinuous approximations are always good. For the general non-matched case, we explain that the piecewise discontinuous constant approximation comb…
Medusa, a novel library for implementation of strong form mesh-free methods, is described. We identify and present common parts and patterns among many such methods reported in the literature, such as node positioning, stencil selection and stencil weight computation. Many different algorithms exist for each part and the possible combinations offer a plethora of possibilities for improvements of solution procedures that are far from fully understood. As a consequence there are still many unanswered questions in mesh-free community resulting in vivid ongoing research in the field. Medusa implem…
We develop and analyze an ultraweak formulation of linear PDEs in nondivergence form where the coefficients satisfy the Cordes condition. Based on the ultraweak formulation we propose discontinuous Petrov--Galerkin (DPG) methods. We investigate Fortin operators for the fully discrete schemes and provide a posteriori estimators for the methods under consideration. Numerical experiments are presented in the case of uniform and adaptive mesh-refinement.
In \cite{cheung2019optimally}, the authors presented two finite element methods for approximating second order boundary value problems on polytopial meshes with optimal accuracy without having to utilize curvilinear mappings. This was done by enforcing the boundary conditions through judiciously chosen polynomial extension operators. The $H^1$ error estimates were proven to be optimal for the solutions of both the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. It was also proven that the Dirichlet problem approximation converges optimally in $L^2$. However, optimality of the Neumann approximat…
We devised a first order time stepping ensemble hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for a group of parameterized convection diffusion PDEs with different initial conditions, body forces, boundary conditions and coefficients in our earlier work [3]. We obtained an optimal convergence rate for the ensemble solutions in $L^\infty(0,T;L^2(Ω))$ on a simplex mesh; and obtained a superconvergent rate for the ensemble solutions in $L^2(0,T;L^2(Ω))$ after an element-by-element postprocessing if polynomials degree $k\ge 1$ and the coefficients of the PDEs are independent of time. In this wo…
We introduce a fast direct solver for variable-coefficient elliptic partial differential equations on surfaces based on the hierarchical Poincaré-Steklov method. The method takes as input an unstructured, high-order quadrilateral mesh of a surface and discretizes surface differential operators on each element using a high-order spectral collocation scheme. Elemental solution operators and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps tangent to the surface are precomputed and merged in a pairwise fashion to yield a hierarchy of solution operators that may be applied in $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ operations for a mes…
Approximating PDEs on surfaces by the diffuse interface approach allows us to use standard numerical tools to solve these problems. This makes it an attractive numerical approach. We extend this approach to vector-valued surface PDEs and explore their convergence properties. In contrast to the well-studied case of scalar-valued surface PDEs, the optimal order of convergence can only be achieved if certain relations between mesh size and interface width are fulfilled. This difference results from the increased coupling between the surface geometry and the PDE for vector-valued quantities define…
In this paper, we present a novel parallel dimension-independent node positioning algorithm that is capable of generating nodes with variable density, suitable for meshless numerical analysis. A very efficient sequential algorithm based on Poisson disc sampling is parallelized for use on shared-memory computers, such as modern workstations with multi-core processors. The parallel algorithm uses a global spatial indexing method with its data divided into two levels, which allows for an efficient multi-threaded implementation. The addition of bootstrapping enables the algorithm to use any number…
This work presents a high-accuracy, mesh-free, generalized Stokes theorem-based numerical quadrature scheme for integrating functions over trimmed parametric surfaces and volumes. The algorithm relies on two fundamental steps: (1) We iteratively reduce the dimensionality of integration using the generalized Stokes theorem to line integrals over trimming curves, and (2) we employ numerical antidifferentiation in the generalized Stokes theorem using high-order quadrature rules. The scheme achieves exponential convergence up to trimming curve approximation error and has applications to computatio…
