Let $\{U_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ and $\{V_m\}_{m \geq 0}$ be two linear recurrence sequences. We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of integers $c$ in the range $[-x, x]$ which can be represented as differences $ U_n - V_m$. In particular, the density of such integers is $0$.
Let $\{U_n\}_{n \geqslant 0}$ and $\{G_m\}_{m \geqslant 0}$ be two linear recurrence sequences defined over the integers. We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of integers $c$ in the range $[-x, x]$ which can be represented as differences $ U_n - G_m$, when $x$ goes to infinity. In particular, the density of such integers is $0$.
By the theory of elliptic curves, we study the integers representable as the product of the sum of four integers with the sum of their reciprocals and give a sufficient condition for the integers with a positive representation.
The set of integers which can be written as the sum of four prime cubes has lower density at least $0.009664$. This improves earlier bounds of $0.003125$ by Ren and $0.005776$ by Liu.
We prove that the greatest positive integer that is not expressible as a linear combination with integer coefficients of elements of the set $\{n^2,(n+1)^2,\ldots \}$ is asymptotically $O(n^2)$, verifying thus a conjecture of Dutch and Rickett. Furthermore we ask a question on the representation of integers as sum of four large squares.
Given a polynomial $f(x_1,x_2,\ldots, x_t)$ in $t$ variables with integer coefficients and a positive integer $n$, let $α(n)$ be the number of integers $0\leq a<n$ such that the polynomial congruence $f(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_t)\equiv a\ (mod\ n)$ is solvable. We describe a method that allows to determine the function $α$ associated to polynomials of the form $c_1x_1^k+c_2x_2^k+\cdots+c_tx_t^k$. Then we apply this method to polynomials that involve sums and differences of squares, mainly to the polynomials $x^2+y^2, x^2-y^2$ and $x^2+y^2+z^2$.
We study elements of second order linear recurrence sequences $(G_n)_{n= 0}^{\infty}$ of polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[x]$ which are decomposable, i.e. representable as $G_n=g\circ h$ for some $g, h\in \mathbb{C}[x]$ satisfying $\operatorname{deg}g,\operatorname{deg}h>1$. Under certain assumptions, and provided that $h$ is not of particular type, we show that $\operatorname{deg}g$ may be bounded by a constant independent of $n$, depending only on the sequence.
Let $w(n)$ be an additive non-negative integer-valued arithmetic function which is equal to $1$ on primes. We study the distribution of $n + w(n)$ $\pmod p$ and give a lower bound for the density of the set of numbers which are not representable as $n + w(n)$.
We prove that for a positive integer a the integer sequence P(n) satisfying for all n, -infty<n<infty, the recurrence P(n)=a+P(n-phi(a)), phi(a) the Euler function, generates in increasing order all integers P(n) coprime to a.The finite Fourier expansion of P(n) is given in terms of a, n, and the phi(a)-th roots of unity. Properties of the sequence are derived.
It is commonly known that $ζ(2k) = q_{k}\frac{ζ(2k + 2)}{π^2}$ with known rational numbers $q_{k}$. In this work we construct recurrence relations of the form $\sum_{k = 1}^{\infty}r_{k}\frac{ζ(2k + 1)}{π^{2k}} = 0$ and show that series representations for the coefficients $r_{k} \in \mathbb{R}$ can be computed explicitly.
Let $S = \{q_1, \ldots , q_s\}$ be a finite, non-empty set of distinct prime numbers. For a non-zero integer $m$, write $m = q_1^{r_1} \ldots q_s^{r_s} M$, where $r_1, \ldots , r_s$ are non-negative integers and $M$ is an integer relatively prime to $q_1 \ldots q_s$. We define the $S$-part $[m]_S$ of $m$ by $[m]_S := q_1^{r_1} \ldots q_s^{r_s}$. Let $(u_n)_{n \ge 0}$ be a linear recurrence sequence of integers. Under certain necessary conditions, we establish that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists an integer $n_0$ such that $[u_n]_S\leq |u_n|^{\varepsilon}$ holds for $n > n_0$. Our pro…
Let $(u_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a nondegenerate linear recurrence of integers, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of positive integers $n$ such that $u_n$ and $n$ are relatively prime. We prove that $\mathcal{A}$ has an asymptotic density, and that this density is positive unless $(u_n / n)_{n \geq 1}$ is a linear recurrence.
We consider a family of integer sequences generated by nonlinear recurrences of the second order, which have the curious property that the terms of the sequence, and integer multiples of the ratios of successive terms (which are also integers), appear interlaced in the continued fraction expansion of the sum of the reciprocals of the terms. Using the rapid (double exponential) growth of the terms, for each sequence it is shown that the sum of the reciprocals is a transcendental number.
We survey and prove properties a family of recurrences bears in relation to integer representations, compositions, the Pascal triangle, sums of digits, Nim games and Beatty sequences.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals and in minimal Weierstrass form, and let $P=(x_1/z_1^2,y_1/z_1^3)$ be a rational point of infinite order on $E$, where $x_1,y_1,z_1$ are coprime integers. We show that the integer sequence $(z_n)$ defined by $nP=(x_n/z_n^2,y_n/z_n^3)$ for all $n\ge 1$ does not eventually coincide with $(u_{n^2})$ for any choice of linear recurrence sequence $(u_n)$ with integer values.
For each positive integer $N$, define $$S'_N \ =\ \{1 < d < \sqrt{N}: d|N\}\mbox{ and }L'_N \ =\ \{\sqrt{N} < d < N : d|N\}.$$ Recently, Chentouf characterized all positive integers $N$ such that the set of small divisors $\{d\le \sqrt{N}: d|N\}$ satisfies a linear recurrence of order at most two. We nontrivially extend the result by excluding the trivial divisor $1$ from consideration, which dramatically increases the analysis complexity. Our first result characterizes all positive integers $N$ such that $S'_N$ satisfies a linear recurrence of order at most two. Moreover, our second result ch…
Let $S= \{ p_1, \ldots, p_s\}$ be a finite, non-empty set of distinct prime numbers and $(U_{n})_{n \geq 0}$ be a linear recurrence sequence of integers of order $r$. For any positive integer $k,$ we define $(U_j^{(k)})_{j\geq 1}$ an increasing sequence composed of integers of the form $U_{n_k} +\cdots + U_{n_1}, \ n_k>\cdots >n_1$. Under certain assumptions, we prove that for any $ε>0,$ there exists an integer $n_{0}$ such that $[U_j^{(k)}]_S < \left(U_j^{(k)}\right)^ε,$ for $ j > n_0,$ where $[m]_S$ denote the $S$-part of the positive integer $m$. On further assumptions on $(U_{n})_{n \geq 0…
We give upper and lower bounds for the largest integer not representable as positive linear combination of three given integers, disproving an upper bound conjectured by Beck, Einstein and Zacks.
We consider a Dirichlet series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a_n^{-s}$, where $a_n$ satisfies a linear recurrence of arbitrary degree with integer coefficients. Under suitable hypotheses, we prove that it has a meromorphic continuation to the complex plane, giving explicit formulas for its pole set and residues, as well as for its finite values at negative integers, which are shown to be rational numbers. To illustrate the results, we focus on some concrete examples which have also been studied previously by other authors.
Let $d \ge 3$ be an integer and let $P \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ whose Galois group is $S_d$. Let $(a_n)$ be a linearly recuresive sequence of integers which has $P$ as its characteristic polynomial. We prove, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, that the lower density of the set of primes which divide at least one element of the sequence $(a_n)$ is positive.
For every nonconstant monic polynomial $g \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$, let $\mathfrak{M}(g)$ be the set of positive integers $m$ for which there exist an integer linear recurrence $(s_n)_{n \geq 0}$ having characteristic polynomial $g$ and a positive integer $M$ such that $(s_n)_{n \geq 0}$ has exactly $m$ distinct residues modulo $M$. Dubickas and Novikas proved that $\mathfrak{M}(X^2 - X - 1) = \mathbb{N}$. We study $\mathfrak{M}(g)$ in the case in which $g$ is divisible by a monic quadratic polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ with roots $α,β$ such that $αβ= \pm 1$ and $α/ β$ is not a root of unity. We …
We propose a new definition of effective formulas for problems in enumerative combinatorics. We outline the proof of the fact that every linear recurrence sequence of integers has such a formula. It follows from a lower bound that can be deduced from the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem and the Subspace Theorem. We will give details of this deduction that is due to P. Corvaja in the full version of this extended abstract.
Let $F$ be an integral linear recurrence, $G$ be an integer-valued polynomial splitting over the rationals, and $h$ be a positive integer. Also, let $\mathcal{A}_{F,G,h}$ be the set of all natural numbers $n$ such that $\gcd(F(n), G(n)) = h$. We prove that $\mathcal{A}_{F,G,h}$ has a natural density. Moreover, assuming $F$ is non-degenerate and $G$ has no fixed divisors, we show that $\mathbf{d}(\mathcal{A}_{F,G,1}) = 0$ if and only if $\mathcal{A}_{F,G,1}$ is finite.
Here, we give upper and lower bounds on the count of positive integers $n\le x$ dividing the $n$th term of a nondegenerate linearly recurrent sequence with simple roots.
Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a fixed linear recurrence sequence of integers with order at least two, and for any positive integer $\ell$, let $\ell \cdot 2^{\ell} + 1$ be a Cullen number. Recently in \cite{bmt}, generalized Cullen numbers in terms of linear recurrence sequence $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ under certain weak assumptions has been studied. However, there is an error in their proof. In this paper, we generalize their work, as well as our result fixes their error. In particular, for a given polynomial $Q(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ we consider the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1} + \cdots + U_{n_k} = \ell…
Let $(U_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ and $(V_m)_{m=0}^\infty$ be two linear recurrence sequences. For fixed positive integers $k$ and $\ell$, fixed $k$-tuple $(a_1,\dots,a_k)\in \mathbb{Z}^k$ and fixed $\ell$-tuple $(b_1,\dots,b_\ell)\in \mathbb{Z}^\ell$ we consider the linear equation $$a_1U_{n_1}+\cdots +a_k U_{n_k}=b_1V_{m_1}+\cdots + b_\ell V_{m_\ell}$$ in the unknown non-negative integers $n_1,\dots,n_k$ and $m_1,\dots,m_\ell$. Under the assumption that the linear recurrences $(U_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ and $(V_m)_{m=0}^\infty$ have dominant roots and under the assumption of further mild restrictions we sho…
Given a sequence of distinct positive integers $w_0 , w_1, w_2, \ldots$ and any positive integer $n$, we define the discriminator function $\mathcal{D}_{\bf w}(n)$ to be the smallest positive integer $m$ such that $w_0,\ldots, w_{n-1}$ are pairwise incongruent modulo $m$. In this paper, we classify all binary recurrent sequences $\{w_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ consisting of different integer terms such that $\mathcal{D}_{\bf w}(2^e)=2^e$ for every $e\geq 1.$ For all of these sequences it is expected that one can actually give a fairly simple description of $\mathcal{D}_{\bf w}(n)$ for every $n\ge 1.$ For …
There is a growing literature on sums of reciprocals of polynomial functions of recurrence relations with constant coefficients and fixed depth, such as Fibonacci and Tribonacci numbers, products of such numbers, and balancing numbers (numbers $n$ such that the sum of the integers less than $n$ equals the sum of the $r$ integers immediately after, for some $r$ which is called the balancer of $n$; If $n$ is included in the summation, we have the cobalancing numbers, and $r$ is called the cobalancer of $n$). We generalize previous work to reciprocal sums of depth two recurrence sequences with ar…
Let $F$ and $G$ be linear recurrences over a number field $\mathbb{K}$, and let $\mathfrak{R}$ be a finitely generated subring of $\mathbb{K}$. Furthermore, let $\mathcal{N}$ be the set of positive integers $n$ such that $G(n) \neq 0$ and $F(n) / G(n) \in \mathfrak{R}$. Under mild hypothesis, Corvaja and Zannier proved that $\mathcal{N}$ has zero asymptotic density. We prove that $\#(\mathcal{N} \cap [1, x]) \ll x \cdot (\log\log x / \log x)^h$ for all $x \geq 3$, where $h$ is a positive integer that can be computed in terms of $F$ and $G$. Assuming the Hardy-Littlewood $k$-tuple conjecture, o…
Given a positive integer $n$, the small divisors of $n$ are defined as the positive divisors that do not exceed $\sqrt{n}.$ Ianucci previously classified all $n$ for which the small divisors of $n$ form an arithmetic progression. In this paper, we classify all $n$ for which the small divisors of $n$ form a linear recurrence of order at most two.
Given positive integers $a_1,...,a_n$ with $\gcd(a_1,...,a_n) = 1$, we call an integer t representable if there exist nonnegative integers $m_1,...,m_n$ such that $t = m_1 a_1 + ... + m_n a_n$. In this paper, we discuss the linear diophantine problem of Frobenius: namely, find the largest integer which is not representable. We call this largest integer the Frobenius number $g(a_1,...,a_n)$. We extend this problem to asking for the smallest integer $g_k(a_1,...,a_d)$ beyond which every integer is represented more than k times. We concentrate on the case d=2 and prove statements about $g_k(a,b)$…
Let t[n] be a sequence that satisfies a first order homogeneous recurrence t[n] = Q[n]*t[n-1], where Q is a polynomial with integer coefficients. The asymptotic behavior of the p-adic valuation of t[n] is described under the assumption that all the roots of Q in Z/pZ have nonvanishing derivative.
In this paper, we present a method for estimating the least common multiple of a large class of binary linear recurrence sequences. Let $P,Q,R_0$, and $R_1$ be fixed integers and let $\boldsymbol{R}=\left(R_n\right)_{n}$ be the recurrence sequence defined by $R_{n+2}=PR_{n+1}-QR_{n}$ $(\forall n\geq 0)$. Under some conditions on the parameters, we determine a rational nontrivial divisor for $L_{k,n}:=\mathrm{lcm}\left(R_k,R_{k+1},\dots,R_n\right)$, for all positive integers $n$ and $k$, such that $n\geq k$. As consequences, we derive nontrivial effective lower bounds for $L_{k,n}$ and we estab…
In this work we show that based on a conjecture for the pair correlation of integers representable as sums of two squares, which was first suggested by Connors and Keating and reformulated here, the second moment of the distribution of the number of representable integers in short intervals is consistent with a Poissonian distribution, where "short" means of length comparable to the mean spacing between sums of two squares. In addition we present a method for producing such conjectures through calculations in prime power residue rings and describe how these conjectures, as well as the above st…
Stewart (2013) proved that the biggest prime divisor of the $n$th term of a Lucas sequence of integers grows quicker than $n$, answering famous questions of Erdős and Schinzel. In this note we obtain a fully explicit and, in a sense, uniform version of Stewart's result.
For a class of Lucas sequences ${x_n}$, we show that if $n$ is a positive integer then $x_n$ has a primitive prime factor which divides $x_n$ to an odd power, except perhaps when $n = 1, 2, 3 or 6$. This has several desirable consequences.
Given a recurrent sequence ${\bf U}:=\{U_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ we consider the problem of counting ${\mathcal M}_U(x)$, the number of integers $n\le x$ such that $U_n=u^2+nv^2$ for some integers $u,v$. We will show that ${\mathcal M}_U(x)\ll x(\log x)^{-0.05}$ for a large class of ternary sequences. Our method uses many ingredients from the proof of Alba González and the second author that ${\mathcal M}_F(x)\ll x(\log x)^{-0.06}$, with $\bf F$ the Fibonacci sequence.
We study sets of the form $A = \big\{ n \in \mathbb N \big| \lVert p(n) \rVert_{\mathbb R / \mathbb Z} \leq \varepsilon(n) \big\}$ for various real valued polynomials $p$ and decay rates $\varepsilon$. In particular, we ask when such sets are bases of finite order for the positive integers. We show that generically, $A$ is a basis of order $2$ when $\operatorname{deg} p \geq 3$, but not when $\operatorname{deg} p = 2$, although then $A + A$ still has asymptotic density $1$.
Let $\{ {U_{n}\}_{n \geq 0} }$ be a non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive discriminant. Let $\{p_1,\ldots, p_s\}$ be fixed prime numbers and $\{b_1,\ldots ,b_s\}$ be fixed non-negative integers. In this paper, we obtain the finiteness result for the solution of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_{1}} + \cdots + U_{n_{t}} = b_1 p_1^{z_1} + \cdots+ b_s p_s^{z_s} $ under certain assumptions. Moreover, we explicitly solve the equation $F_{n_1}+ F_{n_2}= 2^{z_1} +3^{z_2}$, in non-negative integers $n_1, n_2, z_1, z_2$ with $z_2\geq z_1$. The main tools used in this work are the lower …
Using a method we have utilized previously, namely through a finite power series expansion which also sometimes is known as the "radix polynomial" representation of an integer, we find an upper bound for a van der Waerden number that has a recurrence property.
In this paper, we shall establish a rather general asymptotic formula in short intervals for a classe of arithmetic functions and announce two applications about the distribution of divisors of square-full numbers and integers representable as sums of two squares.
In this paper we construct two types of Hessenberg matrices with the properties that every weighted isobaric polynomial (WIP) appears as a determinant of one of them, and as the permanent of the other. Every integer sequence which is linearly recurrent is representable by (an evaluation of) some linearly recurrent sequence of WIPs. WIPs are symmetric polynomials written on the elementary symmetric polynomial basis. Among them are the generalized Fibonacci polynomials and the generalized Lucas polynomials, which already have these sweeping representing properties. Among the integer sequences di…
Let $(x_n)_{n\geq0}$ be a linear recurrence of order $k\geq2$ satisfying $$x_n=a_1x_{n-1}+a_2x_{n-2}+\dots+a_kx_{n-k}$$ for all integers $n\geq k$, where $a_1,\dots,a_k,x_0,\dots, x_{k-1}\in \mathbb{Z},$ with $a_k\neq0$. In [`The quotient set of $k$-generalised Fibonacci numbers is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_p$', \emph{Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.} \textbf{96} (2017), 24-29], Sanna posed an open question to classify primes $p$ for which the quotient set of $(x_n)_{n\geq0}$ is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this article, we find a sufficient condition for denseness of the quotient set of the $k$th-order linea…
Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
In this paper we give an improvement of the degree of the homogeneous linear recurrence with integer coefficients that exponential sums of symmetric Boolean functions satisfy. This improvement is tight. We also compute the asymptotic behavior of symmetric Boolean functions and provide a formula that allows us to determine if a symmetric boolean function is asymptotically not balanced. In particular, when the degree of the symmetric function is a power of two, then the exponential sum is much smaller than $2^n$.
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
Given coprime positive integers $a_1 < ...< a_d$, the Frobenius number $F$ is the largest integer which is not representable as a non-negative integer combination of the $a_i$. Let $g$ denote the number of all non-representable positive integers: Wilf conjectured that $d \geq \frac{F+1}{F+1-g}$. We prove that for every fixed value of $\lceil \frac{a_1}{d} \rceil$ the conjecture holds for all values of $a_1$ which are sufficiently large and are not divisible by a finite set of primes. We also propose a generalization in the context of one-dimensional local rings and a question on the equality $…
