We study exceptional collections of line bundles on surfaces. We prove that any full cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles on a rational surface is an augmentation in the sense of L.Hille and M.Perling. We find simple geometric criteria of exceptionality (strong exceptionality, cyclic strong exceptionality) for collections of line bundles on weak del Pezzo surfaces. As a result, we classify smooth projective surfaces admitting a full cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles. Also, we provide an example of a weak del Pezzo surface of degree 2 and a full strong exceptional collection of line bundles on it which does not come from augmentations, thus answering a question by Hille and Perling.
In this paper we study the connection between rigid sheaves and separable-exceptional objects on Fano varieties over arbitrary fields. We give criteria for a rigid vector bundle on a Fano variety to be the direct sum of separable-exceptional bundles and for a separable-exceptional vector bundle to be part of a full separable-exceptional collection.
We study the normal bundles of the exceptional sets of isolated simple small singularities in the higher dimension when the Picard group of the exceptional set is $\mathbb{Z}$ and the normal bundle of it has some good filtration. In particular, for the exceptional set is a projective space with the split normal bundle, we generalized Nakayama and Ando's results to higher dimension. Moreover, we also generalize Laufer's results of rationality and embedding dimension to higher dimension.
We study full exceptional collections of line bundles on surfaces. We prove that any full strong exceptional collection of line bundles on a weak del Pezzo surface of degree $\ge 3$ is an augmentation in the sense of L.Hille and M.Perling, while for some weak del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ the above is not true. We classify smooth projective surfaces possessing a cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles of maximal length: we prove that they are weak del Pezzo surfaces and find all types of weak del Pezzo surfaces admitting such a collection. We find simple criteria of exceptional…
Exceptional sequences of line bundles on a smooth projective toric surface are automatically full when they can be constructed via augmentation. By using spherical twists, we give examples that there are also exceptional sequences which can not be constructed this way but are nevertheless full.
We study strong exceptional collections of line bundles on Fano toric Deligne-Mumford stacks $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ with rank of Picard group at most two. We prove that any strong exceptional collection of line bundles generates the derived category of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$, as long as the number of elements in the collection equals the rank of the (Grothendieck) $K$-theory group of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$.
In 1981 J. Wahl described smoothings of surface quotient singularities with no vanishing cycles. Given a smoothing of a projective surface X of this type, we construct an associated exceptional vector bundle on the nearby fiber Y in the case H^{2,0}(Y)=H^1(Y)=0. If Y is the projective plane we show that our construction establishes a bijective correspondence between the possible degenerate surfaces X and exceptional bundles on Y modulo dualizing and tensoring by line bundles. If Y is of general type then our construction establishes a connection between components of the boundary of the moduli…
A recent construction of Hacking relates the classification of stable vector bundles on a surface of general type with $p_g = 0$ and the boundary of the moduli space of deformations of the surface. In the present paper we analyze this relation for Godeaux surfaces. We provide a description of certain boundary components of the moduli space of Godeaux surfaces. Also we explicitly construct certain exceptional vector bundles of rank 2 on Godeaux surfaces, stable with respect to the canonical class, and examine the correspondence between the boundary components and such exceptional vector bundles…

We prove that the only rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number 1 of the exceptional algebraic groups admitting irreducible equivariant Ulrich vector bundles are the Cayley plane $E_6/P_1$ and the $E_7$-adjoint variety $E_7/P_1$. From this result, we see that a general hyperplane section $F_4/P_4$ of the Cayley plane also has an equivariant but non-irreducible Ulrich bundle.
Let $Y$ be a smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ with ${\rm Char}\ k\nmid n$, and let $π:X\rightarrow Y$ be a $n$-cyclic covering branched along a smooth divisor $B$. We show that under some conditions $\mathscr{T}_X$ is semi-stable with respect to $π^*\mathcal {H}$ if the tangent bundle $\mathscr{T}_Y$ is semi-stable with respect to some ample line bundle $\mathcal {H}$ on $Y$.
We show that there exists a cubic threefold defined by an invertible polynomial that, when quotiented by the maximal diagonal symmetry group, has a derived category which does not have a full exceptional collection consisting of line bundles. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture of Lekili and Ueda.
We prove that any numerically exceptional collection of maximal length, consisting of line bundles, on a smooth del Pezzo surface is a standard augmentation in the sense of L.Hille and M.Perling. We deduce that any such collection is exceptional and full.
Let $X$ be a toric Del-Pezzo surface and let $Crit(W) \subset (\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^n$ be the solution scheme of the Landau-Ginzburg system of equations. Denote by $X^{\circ}$ the polar variety of $X$. Our aim in this work is to describe a map $L : Crit(W) \rightarrow Fuk_{trop}(X^{\circ})$ whose image under homological mirror symmetry corresponds to a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles.
Let W be the germ of a smooth complex surface around an exceptional curve and let E be a rank 2 vector bundle on W. We study the cohomological properties of a finite sequence $E_i, 1 \leq i \leq t$ of rank 2 vector bundles canonically associated to E. We calculate numerical invariants of E in terms of the $E_i.$ If S is a compact complex smooth surface and E is a rank 2 bundle on the blow- up of S at a point, we show that all values of $c_2(E)-c_2(π_* E^{\vee\vee})$ that are numerically possible are actually attained.
We explore relations between Higgs bundles that result from isogenies between low-dimensional Lie groups, with special attention to the spectral data for the Higgs bundles. We focus on isogenies onto $SO(4,C)$ and $SO(6,C)$ and their split real forms. Using fiber products of spectral curves, we obtain directly the desingularizations of the (necessarily singular) spectral curves associated to orthogonal Higgs bundles. In the case of $SO(6,C)$ our construction can be interpreted as a new description of Recillas' trigonal construction.
We use constructions of surfaces as abelian covers to write down exceptional collections of line bundles of maximal length for every surface $X$ in certain families of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K_X^2=3,4,5,6,8$. We also compute the algebra of derived endomorphisms for an appropriately chosen exceptional collection, and the Hochschild cohomology of the corresponding quasiphantom category. As a consequence, we see that the subcategory generated by the exceptional collection does not vary in the family of surfaces. Finally, we describe the semigroup of effective divisors on each …
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ of $\dim X\geq 4$ and Picard number $ρ(X)=1$. Suppose that $X$ satisfies $H^i(X,F^{m*}_X(\Omg^j_X)\otimes\Ls^{-1})=0$ for any ample line bundle $\Ls$ on $X$, and any nonnegative integers $m,i,j$ with $0\leq i+j<\dim X$, where $F_X:X\rightarrow X$ is the absolute Frobenius morphism. We prove that by procedures combining taking smooth hypersurfaces of dimension $\geq 3$ and cyclic covers along smooth divisors, if the resulting smooth projective variety $Y$ has ample (resp. nef) canonical bundle …
This paper constructs tilting bundles obtained from full strong exceptional collections of line bundles on all smooth $4$-dimensional toric Fano varieties. The tilting bundles lead to a large class of explicit Calabi-Yau-$5$ algebras, obtained as the corresponding rolled-up helix algebra. A database of the full strong exceptional collections can be found in the package QuiversToricVarieties for the computer algebra system Macaulay2.
Given a del Pezzo surface of degree d between 1 and 6, possibly with rational double points, we construct a "tautological" holomorphic G-bundle over X, where G is a reductive group which is an appropriate conformal form of the simply connected complex linear group whose coroot lattice is isomorphic to the primitive cohomology of the minimal resolution of X. For example, in case d=3 and X is a smooth cubic surface, the rank 27 vector bundle over X associated to the G-bundle constructed above and the standard 27-dimensional representation of E_6 is a direct sum of the line bundles associated to …
We construct new examples of exceptional collections of line bundles on the variety of Borel subgroups of a split semisimple linear algebraic group G of rank 2 over a field. We exhibit exceptional collections of the expected length for types A_2 and B_2=C_2 and prove that no such collection exists for type G_2. This settles the question of the existence of full exceptional collections of line bundles on projective homogeneous G-varieties for split linear algebraic groups G of rank at most 2.
We construct quasi-phantom admissible subcategories in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Beauville surface $S$. These quasi-phantoms subcategories appear as right orthogonals to subcategories generated by exceptional collections of maximal possible length 4 on $S$. We prove that there are exactly 6 exceptional collections consisting of line bundles (up to a twist) and these collections are spires of two helices.
We investigate maximal exceptional sequences of line bundles on (P^1)^3, i.e. those consisting of 2^r elements. For r=3 we show that they are always full, meaning that they generate the derived category. Everything is done in the discrete setup: Exceptional sequences of line bundles appear as special finite subsets s of the Picard group Z^r of (P^1)^r, and the question of generation is understood like a process of contamination of the whole Z^r out of an infectious seed s.
We establish a gluing construction for Higgs bundles over a connected sum of Riemann surfaces in terms of solutions to the $\text{Sp(4}\text{,}\mathbb{R}\text{)}$-Hitchin equations using the linearization of a relevant elliptic operator. The construction can be used to provide model Higgs bundles in all the $2g-3$ exceptional components of the maximal $\text{Sp(4}\text{,}\mathbb{R}\text{)}$-Higgs bundle moduli space, which correspond to components solely consisted of Zariski dense representations. This also allows a comparison between the invariants for maximal Higgs bundles and the topologica…
It is proved that any strictly exceptional collection generating the derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety X with \rk K_0(X) = \dim X + 1 constists of locally free sheaves up to a common shift.
An algebraic variety X is embedded to the order k via a line bundle L if the global sections of L generate all (simultaneous) jets of order k on X or if they separate all zero-dimensional subschemes of length at most k+1. Even though we refer to both situations as "higher order embeddings", the first notion (in which case L is said to be k-jet ample) is stronger than the second one (when L is k-very ample). The purpose of this paper is to study higher order embeddings of cyclic coverings π:Y\to X via line bundles given by pulling back "sufficiently positive" line bundles on X. Given a line bun…
In this paper we deal with algebro-geometrical problems connected with testing S-duality conjecture for super-symmetric Yang-Mills quantum field theories in four dimensions. We describe all field configurations such that beta function coefficient for gauge groups of rank 1 and 2 is zero or negative. We also give special series of such field configurations for gauge groups of an arbitrary rank. Realization of one of the series discovers a connection with exceptional bundles. That points again at relation between S-duality and string duality.
In an unpublished preprint, A. King conjectured that there are tilting bundles over projective varieties which are obtained as invariant quotients of affine spaces for linear actions of reductive groups. The goal of this paper is to give further examples of strong exceptional sequences of vector bundles on certain projective varieties. These are obtained as geometric invariant quotients of affine spaces by linear actions of reductive groups, as in King's conjecture.
We consider a surface that admits a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein degeneration to a cyclic quotient singularity $\frac{1}{dn^2}(1,dna-1)$. Under several technical assumptions, we construct $d$ exceptional vector bundles of rank $n$ which are orthogonal to each other.
We compute an explicit formula for the first Chern class of the Hodge Bundle over the space of admissible cyclic $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$ covers of $n$-pointed rational stable curves as a linear combination of boundary strata. We then apply this formula to give a recursive formula for calculating certain Hodge integrals containing $λ_1$. We also consider covers with a ${\mathbb{Z}}/{2\mathbb{Z}}$ action for which we compute $λ_2$ as a linear combination of codimension two boundary strata.
Inspired by Bondal's conjecture, we study the behavior of exceptional sequences of line bundles on rational C*-surfaces under homogeneous degenerations. In particular, we provide a sufficient criterion for such a sequence to remain exceptional under a given degeneration. We apply our results to show that, for toric surfaces of Picard rank 3 or 4, all full exceptional sequences of line bundles may be constructed via augmentation. We also discuss how our techniques may be used to construct noncommutative deformations of derived categories.
Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected complex Lie group, ${\goth{g}}$ its Lie algebra. I remove the restriction ``$G$ is of classical type or $G_2$'' made on $G$ in the papers of Beauville, Laszlo and myself [L-S] and [B-L-S] on the moduli of principal G-bundles over a curve. As I will just "patch" the missing technical points, this note should be seen as an appendix to the above cited papers.
We examine the moduli of framed holomorphic bundles over the blowup of a complex surface, by studying a filtration induced by the behavior of the bundles on a neighborhood of the exceptional divisor.
We study the algebraic geometry of twisted Higgs bundles of cyclic type along complex curves. These objects, which generalize ordinary cyclic Higgs bundles, can be identified with representations of a cyclic quiver in a twisted category of coherent sheaves. Referring to the Hitchin fibration, we produce a fibre-wise geometric description of the locus of such representations within the ambient twisted Higgs moduli space. When the genus is 0, we produce a concrete geometric identification of the moduli space as a vector bundle over an associated (twisted) A-type quiver variety; we count the numb…
The derived category of bounded complexes of coherent sheaves is one of the most important algebraic invariants of a smooth projective variety. An important approach to understand derived categories is to construct full strongly exceptional sequences. The problem of characterizing smooth projective varieties which have a full strongly exceptional collection and investigate whether there is one consisting of line bundles is a classical and important question in Algebraic Geometry. Not all smooth projective varieties have a full strongly exceptional collection of coherent sheaves. In this paper …
The paper consists of three parts. In the first of them different kinds stability are discussed. In particular, the stability concept with respect to nef divisor is introduced. A structure of rigid and superrigid vector bundles on smooth projective surfaces with nef anticanonical class is studied in the second part. We prove that any superrigid bundle has a unique exceptional filtration. In the last part we give constructive description of exceptional bundles on these surfaces.
We describe a relation between the invariants of $n$ ordered points in $P^d$ and of points contained in a union of linear subspaces $P^{d1}\cup P^{d2} \subset P^d$. This yields an attaching map for GIT quotients parameterizing point configurations in these spaces, and we show that it respects the Segre product of the natural GIT polarizations. Associated to a configuration supported on a rational normal curve is a cyclic cover, and we show that if the branch points are weighted by the GIT linearization and the rational normal curve degenerates, then the admissible covers limit is a cyclic cove…
We prove that the cyclic homology of a scheme with an ample line bundle coincides with the cyclic homology of its category of algebraic vector bundles. As a byproduct of the proof, we obtain a new construction of the Chern character of a perfect complex on a ringed space.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface with a full strong exceptional sequence $\mathfrak{E}$. Under certain conditions, we describe the moduli spaces of framed sheaves on a line in $X$ via linear data, i.e. by realizing them as principal bundles over a stack of representations of the bound quiver associated to $\mathfrak{E}$.
Let M(v) be the moduli of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces X of Mukai vector v. If v is primitive, than it is expected that M(v) is deformation equivalent to some Hilbert scheme and weight two hogde structure can be described by H^*(X,Z). These are known by Mukai, O'Grady and Huybrechts if rank is 1 or 2, or the first Chern class is primitive. Under some conditions on the dimension of M(v), we shall show that these assertion are true. For the proof, we shall use Huybrechts's results on symplectic manifolds.
Given a collection of line bundles on a complete toric variety, the Macaulay2 package QuiversToricVarieties contains functions to construct its quiver of sections and check whether the collection is strong exceptional. It contains a database of full strong exceptional collections of line bundles for smooth Fano toric varieties of dimension less than or equal to 4.
The line bundle $12M-D$ on the perfect compactification $A_g^P$ is nef; we show here that in positive characteristic it is semi-ample and that in all characteristics its exceptional locus is the closure of the locus of abelian varieties with an elliptic factor.
We construct a full strong exceptional collection consisting of line bundles on any two-dimensional smooth toric weak Fano stack. The total endomorphism algebra of the resulting collection is isomorphic to the path algebra of a quiver with relations associated with a dimer model and a perfect matching on it.
