We investigate the \emph{last passage percolation} problem on transitive tournaments, in the case when the edge weights are independent Bernoulli random variables. Given a transitive tournament on $n$ nodes with random weights on its edges, the last passage percolation problem seeks to find the weight $X_n$ of the heaviest path, where the weight of a path is the sum of the weights on its edges. We give a recurrence relation and use it to obtain a (bivariate) generating function for the probability generating function of $X_n$. This also gives exact combinatorial expressions for $\mathbb{E}[X_n]$, which was stated as an open problem by Yuster [\emph{Disc. Appl. Math.}, 2017]. We further determine scaling constants in the limit laws for $X_n$. Define $β_{tr}(p) := \lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{\mathbb{E}[X_n]}{n-1}$. Using singularity analysis, we show \[ β_{tr}(p) = \left(\sum_{n\geq 1}(1-p)^{n\choose 2}\right)^{-1}. \] In particular, $β_{tr}(0.5) = \left(\sum_{n\geq 1} 2^{-{n\choose 2}}\right)^{-1} = 0.60914971106...$. This settles the question of determining the value of $β_{tr}(0.5)$, initiated by Yuster. $β_{tr}(p)$ is also the limiting value in the strong law of large numbers for $X_n$, given by Foss, Martin, and Schmidt [\emph{Ann. Appl. Probab.}, 2014]. We also derive the scaling constants in the functional central limit theorem for $X_n$ proved by Foss et al.
We construct a combinatorial function F which computes the number of oriented Hamiltonian paths of any given type, in a transitive tournament. We also study many properties of F that arise, and reach some observations.
Tournaments are graphs obtained by assigning a direction for every edge in an undirected complete graph. We give a formula for the number of isomorphism classes of vertex-transitive tournaments with prime order. For that, we introduce Cayley tournaments, which are special Cayley digraphs, and show that there is a one to one identification between the isomorphism classes of vertex-transitive tournaments with prime order and the isomorphism classes of Cayley tournaments with prime order.
A tournament H is quasirandom-forcing if the following holds for every sequence (G_n) of tournaments of growing orders: if the density of H in G_n converges to the expected density of H in a random tournament, then (G_n) is quasirandom. Every transitive tournament with at least 4 vertices is quasirandom-forcing, and Coregliano et al. [Electron. J. Combin. 26 (2019), P1.44] showed that there is also a non-transitive 5-vertex tournament with the property. We show that no additional tournament has this property. This extends the result of Bucic et al. [Combinatorica 41 (2021), 175-208] that the n…
Let $\vec{T}_k$ be the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. We show that every oriented graph on $n=4m$ vertices with minimum total degree $(11/12+o(1))n$ can be partitioned into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_4$'s, and this bound is asymptotically tight. We also improve the best known bound on the minimum total degree for partitioning oriented graphs into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_k$'s.
The oriented Ramsey number $\vec{r}(H)$ for an acyclic digraph $H$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any $n$-vertex tournament contains a copy of $H$ as a subgraph. We prove that the $1$-subdivision of the $k$-vertex transitive tournament $H_k$ satisfies $\vec{r}(H_k)= O(k^2\log\log k)$. This is tight up to multiplicative $\log\log k$-term. We also show that if $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament with $Δ^+(T)-δ^+(T)= O(n/k) - k^2$, then $T$ contains a $1$-subdivision of $\vec{K}_k$, a complete $k$-vertex digraph with all possible $k(k-1)$ arcs. This is also tight up to multiplicative constant.
In an earlier paper the first two authors have shown that self-complementary graphs can always be oriented in such a way that the union of the oriented version and its isomorphically oriented complement gives a transitive tournament. We investigate the possibilities of generalizing this theorem to decompositions of the complete graph into three or more isomorphic graphs. We find that a complete characterization of when an orientation with similar properties is possible seems elusive. Nevertheless, we give sufficient conditions that generalize the earlier theorem and also imply that decompositi…
The study of problems concerning subdivisions of graphs has a rich history in extremal combinatorics. Confirming a conjecture of Burr and Erdős, Alon proved in 1994 that subdivided graphs have linear Ramsey numbers. Later, Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov showed that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\varepsilon n^2$ edges contains a $1$-subdivision of the complete graph on $c_{\varepsilon}\sqrt{n}$ vertices, resolving another old conjecture of Erdős. In this paper we consider the directed analogue of these problems and show that every tournament on at least $(2+o(1))k^2$ vertices contains th…
A tournament is $k$-spectrally monomorphic if all the $k\times k$ principal submatrices of its adjacency matrix have the same characteristic polynomial. Transitive $n$-tournaments are trivially $k$-spectrally monomorphic. We show that there are no other for $k\in \{3,\ldots,n-3\} $. Furthermore, we prove that for $n\geq 5$, a non-transitive $n$-tournament is $(n-2)$-spectrally monomorphic if and only if it is doubly regular. Finally, we give some results on $(n-1)$-spectrally monomorphic regular tournaments.
Solving the kernel perfect problem by (simple) forbidden subdigraphs for digraphs in some families of generalized tournaments and generalized bipartite tournaments
We show that for every positive integer $k$, any tournament can be partitioned into at most $2^{ck}$ $k$-th powers of paths. This result is tight up to the exponential constant. Moreover, we prove that for every $\varepsilon>0$ and every integer $k$, any tournament on $n\ge \varepsilon^{-Ck}$ vertices which is $\varepsilon$-far from being transitive contains the $k$-th power of a cycle of length $Ω(\varepsilon n)$; both bounds are tight up to the implied constants.
A multipath in a directed graph is a disjoint union of paths. The multipath complex of a directed graph ${\tt G}$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the multipaths of ${\tt G}$. We compute the Euler characteristic, and associated generating function, of the multipath complex for some families of graphs, including transitive tournaments and complete bipartite graphs. Then, we compute the homotopy type of multipath complexes of linear graphs, polygons, small grids and transitive tournaments. We show that they are all contractible or wedges of spheres. We introduce a new technique for deco…
We answer a question of Benjamini and Schramm by proving that under reasonable conditions, quotienting a graph strictly increases the value of its percolation critical parameter $p_c$. More precisely, let $\mathcal{G}=(V,E)$ be a quasi-transitive graph with $p_c(\mathcal{G})<1$, and let $G$ be a nontrivial group that acts freely on $V$ by graph automorphisms. Assume that $\mathcal{H}:=\mathcal{G}/G$ is quasi-transitive. Then one has $p_c(\mathcal{G})<p_c(\mathcal{H})$. We provide results beyond this setting: we treat the case of general covering maps and provide a similar result for the unique…
Akin to the Erdős-Rademacher problem, Linial and Morgenstern made the following conjecture in tournaments: for any $d\in (0,1]$, among all $n$-vertex tournaments with $d\binom{n}{3}$ many 3-cycles, the number of 4-cycles is asymptotically minimized by a special random blow-up of a transitive tournament. Recently, Chan, Grzesik, Král' and Noel introduced spectrum analysis of adjacency matrices of tournaments in this study, and confirmed this for $d\geq 1/36$. In this paper, we investigate the analogous problem of minimizing the number of cycles of a given length. We prove that for integers $\el…
We show that digraphs with no transitive tournament on $3$ vertices and in which every induced directed cycle has length $3$ can have arbitrarily large dichromatic number. This answers to the negative a question of Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl (and extends some of their results).
