We study site and bond percolation on directed simple random graphs with a given degree distribution and derive the expressions for the critical value of the percolation probability above which the giant strongly connected component emerges and the fraction of vertices in this component.
In this paper we show the existence of a sharp threshold for the appearance of a giant component after percolation of Cartesian products of graphs under assumptions on their maximum degrees and their isoperimetric constants. In particular, this generalises a work of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi from 1982 concerning percolation of the hypercube in high dimension.
We study the two most common types of percolation process on a sparse random graph with a given degree sequence. Namely, we examine first a bond percolation process where the edges of the graph are retained with probability p and afterwards we focus on site percolation where the vertices are retained with probability p. We establish critical values for p above which a giant component emerges in both cases. Moreover, we show that in fact these coincide. As a special case, our results apply to power law random graphs. We obtain rigorous proofs for formulas derived by several physicists for such …
A graph $G$ percolates in the $K_{r,s}$-bootstrap process if we can add all missing edges of $G$ in some order such that each edge creates a new copy of $K_{r,s}$, where $K_{r,s}$ is the complete bipartite graph. We study $K_{r,s}$-bootstrap percolation on the Erdős-Rényi random graph, and determine the percolation threshold for balanced $K_{r,s}$ up to a logarithmic factor. This partially answers a question raised by Balogh, Bollobás, and Morris. We also establish a general lower bound of the percolation threshold for all $K_{r,s}$, with $r\geq s \geq 3$.
Jigsaw percolation is a model for the process of solving puzzles within a social network, which was recently proposed by Brummitt, Chatterjee, Dey and Sivakoff. In the model there are two graphs on a single vertex set (the `people' graph and the `puzzle' graph), and vertices merge to form components if they are joined by an edge of each graph. These components then merge to form larger components if again there is an edge of each graph joining them, and so on. Percolation is said to occur if the process terminates with a single component containing every vertex. In this note we determine the t…
We study bond percolation for a family of infinite hyperbolic graphs. We relate percolation to the appearance of homology in finite versions of these graphs. As a consequence, we derive an upper bound on the critical probabilities of the infinite graphs.
A new Berry-Esseen bound for non-linear functionals of non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences is established. It is based on a discrete version of the Malliavin-Stein method and an analysis of the discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The result is applied to sub-graph counts and to the number of vertices having a prescribed degree in the Erdős-Renyi random graph. A further application deals with a percolation problem on trees.
Let G_n be a sequence of finite transitive graphs with vertex degree d=d(n) and |G_n|=n. Denote by p^t(v,v) the return probability after t steps of the non-backtracking random walk on G_n. We show that if p^t(v,v) has quasi-random properties, then critical bond-percolation on G_n has a scaling window of width n^{-1/3}, as it would on a random graph. A consequence of our theorems is that if G_n is a transitive expander family with girth at least (2/3 + eps) \log_{d-1} n, then the size of the largest component in p-bond-percolation with p={1 +O(n^{-1/3}) \over d-1} is roughly n^{2/3}. In particu…
Graph bootstrap percolation, introduced by Bollobás in 1968, is a cellular automaton defined as follows. Given a "small" graph $H$ and a "large" graph $G = G_0 \subseteq K_n$, in consecutive steps we obtain $G_{t+1}$ from $G_t$ by adding to it all new edges $e$ such that $G_t \cup e$ contains a new copy of $H$. We say that $G$ percolates if for some $t \geq 0$, we have $G_t = K_n$. For $H = K_r$, the question about the size of the smallest percolating graphs was independently answered by Alon, Frankl and Kalai in the 1980's. Recently, Balogh, Bollobás and Morris considered graph bootstrap perc…

We study the random graph obtained by random deletion of vertices or edges from a random graph with given vertex degrees. A simple trick of exploding vertices instead of deleting them, enables us to derive results from known results for random graphs with given vertex degrees. This is used to study existence of giant component and existence of k-core. As a variation of the latter, we study also bootstrap percolation in random regular graphs. We obtain both simple new proofs of known results and new results. An interesting feature is that for some degree sequences, there are several or even inf…

We use isoperimetric inequalities combined with a new technique to prove upper bounds for the site percolation threshold of plane graphs with given minimum degree conditions. In the process we prove tight new isoperimetric bounds for certain classes of hyperbolic graphs. This establishes the vertex isoperimetric constant for all triangular and square hyperbolic lattices, answering a question of Lyons and Peres. We prove that plane graphs of minimum degree at least $7$ have site percolation threshold bounded away from $1/2$, which was conjectured by Benjamini and Schramm, and make progress on a…
We give the first properties of independent Bernoulli percolation, for oriented graphs on the set of vertices $\Z^d$ that are translation-invariant and may contain loops. We exhibit some examples showing that the critical probability for the existence of an infinite cluster may be direction-dependent. Then, we prove that the phase transition in a given direction is sharp, and study the links between percolation and first-passage percolation on these oriented graphs.
We show that for all $d\in \{3,\ldots,n-1\}$ the size of the largest component of a random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices around the percolation threshold $p=1/(d-1)$ is $Θ(n^{2/3})$, with high probability. This extends known results for fixed $d\geq 3$ and for $d=n-1$, confirming a prediction of Nachmias and Peres on a question of Benjamini. As a corollary, for the largest component of the percolated random $d$-regular graph, we also determine the diameter and the mixing time of the lazy random walk. In contrast to previous approaches, our proof is based on a simple application of the swit…
We consider vertex percolation on pseudo-random $d-$regular graphs. The previous study by the second author established the existence of phase transition from small components to a linear (in $\frac{n}{d}$) sized component, at $p=\frac{1}{d}$. In the supercritical regime, our main result recovers the sharp asymptotic of the size of the largest component, and shows that all other components are typically much smaller. Furthermore, we consider other typical properties of the largest component such as the number of edges, existence of a long cycle and expansion. In the subcritical regime, we stre…
We present a large-deviations/thermodynamic approach to the classic problem of percolation on the complete graph. Specifically, we determine the large-deviation rate function for the probability that the giant component occupies a fixed fraction of the graph while all other components are ``small.'' One consequence is an immediate derivation of the ``cavity'' formula for the fraction of vertices in the giant component. As a by-product of our analysis we compute the large-deviation rate functions for the probability of the event that the random graph is connected, the event that it contains no …
We consider first-passage percolation on the class of "high-dimensional" graphs that can be written as an iterated Cartesian product $G\square G \square \dots \square G$ of some base graph $G$ as the number of factors tends to infinity. We propose a natural asymptotic lower bound on the first-passage time between $(v, v, \dots, v)$ and $(w, w, \dots, w)$ as $n$, the number of factors, tends to infinity, which we call the critical time $t^*_G(v, w)$. Our main result characterizes when this lower bound is sharp as $n\rightarrow\infty$. As a corollary, we are able to determine the limit of the so…
We prove non-universality results for first-passage percolation on the configuration model with i.i.d. degrees having infinite variance. We focus on the weight of the optimal path between two uniform vertices. Depending on the properties of the weight distribution, we use an example-based approach and show that rather different behaviors are possible. When the weights are a.s. larger than a constant, the weight and number of edges in the graph grow proportionally to loglog(n), as for the graph distances. On the other hand, when the continuous-time branching process describing the first passage…

Bounds for the expected return probability of the delayed random walk on finite clusters of an invariant percolation on transitive unimodular graphs are derived. They are particularly suited for the case of critical Bernoulli percolation and the associated heavy-tailed cluster size distributions. The upper bound relies on the fact that cartesian products of finite graphs with cycles of a certain minimal size are Hamiltonian. For critical Bernoulli bond percolation on the homogeneous tree this bound is sharp. The asymptotic type of the expected return probability for large times t in this case …
The jigsaw percolation process on graphs was introduced by Brummitt, Chatterjee, Dey, and Sivakoff as a model of collaborative solutions of puzzles in social networks. Percolation in this process may be viewed as the joint connectedness of two graphs on a common vertex set. Our aim is to extend a result of Bollobás, Riordan, Slivken, and Smith concerning this process to hypergraphs for a variety of possible definitions of connectedness. In particular, we determine the asymptotic order of the critical threshold probability for percolation when both hypergraphs are chosen binomially at random.
In this note we study some properties of infinite percolation clusters on non-amenable graphs. In particular, we study the percolative properties of the complement of infinite percolation clusters. An approach based on mass-transport is adapted to show that for a large class of non-amenable graphs, the graph obtained by removing each site contained in an infinite percolation cluster has critical percolation threshold which can be arbitrarily close to the critical threshold for the original graph, almost surely, as p approaches p_c. Closely related is the self-destructive percolation process, i…
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on the product graph of a regular tree and a line. We show that the triangle condition does not hold at the uniqueness threshold.
We determine the asymptotic speed of the first-passage percolation process on some ladder-like graphs (or width-2 stretches) when the times associated with different edges are independent and exponentially distributed but not necessarily all with the same mean. The method uses a particular Markov chain associated with the first-passage percolation process and properties of its stationary distribution.
We consider the discrete Boolean model of percolation on graphs satisfying a doubling metric condition. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the retention parameter of the underlying point process is small enough. We exhibit three families of interesting graphs where the main result of this work holds. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for ergodicity of the discrete Boolean model of percolation.
We define an inhomogeneous percolation model on "ladder graphs" obtained as direct products of an arbitrary graph $G = (V,E)$ and the set of integers $\mathbb{Z}$ (vertices are thought of as having a "vertical" component indexed by an integer). We make two natural choices for the set of edges, producing an unoriented graph $\mathbb{G}$ and an oriented graph $\vec{\mathbb{G}}$. These graphs are endowed with percolation configurations in which independently, edges inside a fixed infinite "column" are open with probability $q$, and all other edges are open with probability $p$. For all fixed $q$ …
We construct an example of a bounded degree, nonamenable, unimodular random rooted graph with $p_c=p_u$ for Bernoulli bond percolation, as well as an example of a bounded degree, unimodular random rooted graph with $p_c<1$ but with an infinite cluster at criticality. These examples show that two well-known conjectures of Benjamini and Schramm are false when generalised from transitive graphs to unimodular random rooted graphs.
We study asymptotic percolation as $N\to \infty$ in an infinite random graph ${\cal G}_N$ embedded in the hierarchical group of order $N$, with connection probabilities depending on an ultrametric distance between vertices. ${\cal G}_N$ is structured as a cascade of finite random subgraphs of (approximate) Erdös-Renyi type. We give a criterion for percolation, and show that percolation takes place along giant components of giant components at the previous level in the cascade of subgraphs for all consecutive hierarchical distances. The proof involves a hierarchy of random graphs with vertices …
Accessibility percolation is a new type of percolation problem inspired by evolutionary biology: a random number, called its fitness, is assigned to each vertex of a graph, then a path in the graph is accessible if fitnesses are strictly increasing through it. In the Rough Mount Fuji (RMF) model the fitness function is defined on the graph as $ω(v)=η(v)+θ\cdot d(v)$, where $θ$ is a positive number called the drift, $d$ is the distance to the source of the graph and $η(v)$ are i.i.d. random variables. In this paper we determine values of $θ$ for having RMF accessibility percolation on the hyper…

In this paper we study percolation on a roughly transitive graph G with polynomial growth and isoperimetric dimension larger than one. For these graphs we are able to prove that p_c < 1, or in other words, that there exists a percolation phase. The main results of the article work for both dependent and independent percolation processes, since they are based on a quite robust renormalization technique. When G is transitive, the fact that p_c < 1 was already known before. But even in that case our proof yields some new results and it is entirely probabilistic, not involving the use of Gromov's …
On a large finite connected graph let edges $e$ become "open" at independent random Exponential times of arbitrary rates $w_e$. Under minimal assumptions, the time at which a giant component starts to emerge is weakly concentrated around its mean.
We consider different problems within the general theme of long-range percolation on oriented graphs. Our aim is to settle the so-called truncation question, described as follows. We are given probabilities that certain long-range oriented bonds are open; assuming that the sum of these probabilities is infinite, we ask if the probability of percolation is positive when we truncate the graph, disallowing bonds of range above a possibly large but finite threshold. We give some conditions in which the answer is affirmative. We also translate some of our results on oriented percolation to the cont…
We prove that for a non-amenable, locally finite, connected, transitive, planar graph with one end, any automorphism invariant site percolation on the graph does not have exactly 1 infinite 1-cluster and exactly 1 infinite 0-cluster a.s. If we further assume that the site percolation is insertion-tolerant and a.s.~there exists a unique infinite 0-cluster, then a.s.~there are no infinite 1-clusters. The proof is based on the analysis of a class of delicately constructed interfaces between clusters and contours. Applied to the case of i.i.d.~Bernoulli site percolation on infinite, connected, loc…
In this paper we define a directed percolation over Erdos-Renyi graphs and derive weak limit results for the resulting stochastic process.
Geometric inhomogeneous random graphs (GIRGs) are a model for scale-free networks with underlying geometry. We study bootstrap percolation on these graphs, which is a process modelling the spread of an infection of vertices starting within a (small) local region. We show that the process exhibits a phase transition in terms of the initial infection rate in this region. We determine the speed of the process in the supercritical case, up to lower order terms, and show that its evolution is fundamentally influenced by the underlying geometry. For vertices with given position and expected degree, …
An important conjecture in percolation theory is that almost surely no infinite cluster exists in critical percolation on any transitive graph for which the critical probability is less than 1. Earlier work has established this for the amenable cases Z^2 and Z^d for large d, as well as for all non-amenable graphs with unimodular automorphism groups. We show that the conjecture holds for the basic classes of non-amenable graphs with non-unimodular automorphism groups: for decorated trees and the non-unimodular Diestel-Leader graphs. We also show that the connection probability between two verti…
Consider the problem of determining the maximal induced subgraph in a random $d$-regular graph such that its components remain bounded as the size of the graph becomes arbitrarily large. We show, for asymptotically large $d$, that any such induced subgraph has size density at most $2(\log d)/d$ with high probability. A matching lower bound is known for independent sets. We also prove the analogous result for sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs.

We prove that the heavy clusters are indistinguishable for Bernoulli percolation on quasi-transitive nonunimodular graphs. As an application, we show that the uniqueness threshold of any quasi-transitive graph is also the threshold for connectivity decay. This resolves a question of Lyons and Schramm (1999) in the Bernoulli percolation case and confirms a conjecture of Schonmann (2001). We also prove that every infinite cluster of Bernoulli percolation on a nonamenable quasi-transitive graph is transient almost surely.
Any infinite graph has site and bond percolation critical probabilities satisfying $p_c^{site}\geq p_c^{bond}$. The strict version of this inequality holds for many, but not all, infinite graphs. In this paper, the class of graphs for which the strict inequality holds is extended to a continuum percolation model. In Gilbert's graph with supercritical density on the Euclidean plane, there is almost surely a unique infinite connected component. We show that on this component $p_c^{site} > p_c^{bond}$. This also holds in higher dimensions.
In this note we study the phase transition for percolation on quasi-transitive graphs with quasi-transitively inhomogeneous edge-retention probabilities. A quasi-transitive graph is an infinite graph with finitely many different "types" of edges and vertices. We prove that the transition is sharp almost everywhere, i.e., that in the subcritical regime the expected cluster size is finite, and that in the subcritical regime the probability of the one-arm event decays exponentially. Our proof extends the proof of sharpness of the phase transition for homogeneous percolation on vertex-transitive g…
In this paper we consider independent site percolation in a triangulation of $\mathbb{R}^2$ given by adding $\sqrt{2}$-long diagonals to the usual graph $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We conjecture that $p_c=\frac{1}{2}$ for any such graph, and prove it for almost every such graph.
A simple lemma bounds $\mathrm{s.d.}(T)/\mathbb{E} T$ for hitting times $T$ in Markov chains with a certain strong monotonicity property. We show how this lemma may be applied to several increasing set-valued processes. Our main result concerns a model of first passage percolation on a finite graph, where the traversal times of edges are independent Exponentials with arbitrary rates. Consider the percolation time $X$ between two arbitrary vertices. We prove that $\mathrm{s.d.}(X)/\mathbb{E} X$ is small if and only if $Ξ/\mathbb{E} X$ is small, where $Ξ$ is the maximal edge-traversal time in th…
The study of random graphs has become very popular for real-life network modeling such as social networks or financial networks. Inhomogeneous long-range percolation (or scale-free percolation) on the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$, $d\ge1$, is a particular attractive example of a random graph model because it fulfills several stylized facts of real-life networks. For this model various geometric properties such as the percolation behavior, the degree distribution and graph distances have been analyzed. In the present paper we complement the picture about graph distances. Moreover, we prove continuity …
Schramm's Locality Conjecture asserts that the value of the critical percolation parameter $p_c$ of a graph satisfying $p_c<1$ depends only on its local structure. In this note, we prove this conjecture in the particular case of transitive graphs with polynomial growth. Our proof relies on two recent works about such graphs, namely supercritical sharpness of percolation by the same authors and a finitary structure theorem by Tessera and Tointon.
Bounds for the diameter and for the expansion of long-range percolation clusters on the cycle $\Z / N\Z$ are given.
Consider the following model of strong-majority bootstrap percolation on a graph. Let r be some positive integer, and p in [0,1]. Initially, every vertex is active with probability p, independently from all other vertices. Then, at every step of the process, each vertex v of degree deg(v) becomes active if at least (deg(v)+r)/2 of its neighbours are active. Given any arbitrarily small p>0 and any integer r, we construct a family of d=d(p,r)-regular graphs such that with high probability all vertices become active in the end. In particular, the case r=1 answers a question and disproves a conjec…
We study a random graph model which combines properties of the edge percolation model on Z^d and a classical random graph G(n,c/n). We show that this model, being a homogeneous random graph, has a natural relation to the so-called "rank 1 case" of inhomogeneous random graphs. This allows us to use the newly developed theory of inhomogeneous random graphs to describe completely the phase diagram in the case d=1. The phase transition is similar to the classical random graph, it is of the second order. We also find the scaled size of the largest connected component above the phase transition.
We prove that critical percolation on any quasi-transitive graph of exponential volume growth does not have a unique infinite cluster. This allows us to deduce from earlier results that critical percolation on any graph in this class does not have any infinite clusters. The result is new when the graph in question is either amenable or nonunimodular.
We extend some of the fundamental results about percolation on unimodular nonamenable graphs to nonunimodular graphs. We show that they cannot have infinitely many infinite clusters at critical Bernoulli percolation. In the case of heavy clusters, this result has already been established, but it also follows from one of our results. We give a general necessary condition for nonunimodular graphs to have a phase with infinitely many heavy clusters. We present an invariant spanning tree with $p_c=1$ on some nonunimodular graph. Such trees cannot exist for nonamenable unimodular graphs. We show a …
We propose an approach to calculate the critical percolation threshold for finite-sized Erdos-Renyi digraphs using minimal Hamiltonian cycles. We obtain an analytically exact result, valid non-asymptotically for all graph sizes, which scales in accordance with results obtained for infinite random graphs using the emergence of a giant connected component as marking the percolation transition. Our approach is general and can be applied to all graph models for which an algebraic formulation of the adjacency matrix is available.
We study a random graph model which is a superposition of the bond percolation model on $Z^d$ with probability $p$ of an edge, and a classical random graph $G(n, c/n)$. We show that this model, being a {\it homogeneous} random graph, has a natural relation to the so-called "rank 1 case" of {\it inhomogeneous} random graphs. This allows us to use the newly developed theory of inhomogeneous random graphs to describe the phase diagram on the set of parameters $c\geq 0$ and $0 \leq p<p_c$, where $p_c=p_c(d)$ is the critical probability for the bond percolation on $Z^d$. The phase transition is sim…
We consider bond percolation on random graphs with given degrees and bounded average degree. In particular, we consider the order of the largest component after the random deletion of the edges of such a random graph. We give a rough characterisation of those degree distributions for which bond percolation with high probability leaves a component of linear order, known usually as a giant component. We show that essentially the critical condition has to do with the tail of the degree distribution. Our proof makes use of recent technique introduced by Joos et al. [FOCS 2016, pp. 695--703], which…
We consider the standard model of i.i.d. bond percolation on $\mathbb Z^d$ of parameter $p$. When $p>p_c$, there exists almost surely a unique infinite cluster $\mathcal C_p$. Using the recent techniques of Cerf and Dembin, we prove that the variance of the graph distance in $\mathcal C_p$ between two points of $\mathcal C_p$ is sublinear. The main result extends the works of Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm, Benaim and Rossignol and Damron, Hanson and Sosoe for the study of the variance of passage times in first passage percolation without moment conditions on the edge-weight distribution.
We extend the jigsaw percolation model to analyze graphs where both underlying people and puzzle graphs are Erdős-Rényi random graphs. Let $p_{\text{ppl}}$ and $p_{\text{puz}}$ denote the probability that an edge exists in the respective people and puzzle graphs and define $p_{\text{eff}}= p_{\text{ppl}}p_{\text{puz}}$, the effective probability. We show for constants $c_1>1$ and $c_2> π^2/6$ and $c_3<e^{-5}$ if $min(p_{\text{ppl}},p_{\text{puz}}) > c_1 \log n /n$ the critical effective probability $p^c_{\text{eff}}$, satisfies $c_3 < p^c_{\text{eff}}n\log n < c_2.$
The theory of random graphs goes back to the late 1950s when Paul Erdős and Alfréd Rényi introduced the Erdős-Rényi random graph. Since then many models have been developed, and the study of random graph models has become popular for real-life network modelling such as social networks and financial networks. The aim of this overview is to review relevant random graph models for real-life network modelling. Therefore, we analyse their properties in terms of stylised facts of real-life networks.
