We consider a class of smooth mixing flows $T^{α,γ}$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with one degenerated fixed point $x_0\in \mathbb{T}^2$ of power type $γ\in (-1,0)$. We prove that for a $G_δ$ dense set of $α\in \mathbb{T}$, a prime number theorem for $T^{α,γ}$ holds along a full upper density subsequence. In particular it follows that for every $x\in \mathbb{T}^2\setminus\{x_0\}$, the prime orbit $\mathbb{T}^2$.
We also show that there exists a class of smooth weakly mixing flows on $\mathbb{T}^2$ for which a prime number theorem holds. In fact we show that there exists a dense set of smooth functions (in the uniform topology) for which prime number theorem holds quantitatively (with an error term $\log^{-A}N$).
We show existence of smooth, weakly mixing reparametrizations of some linear flows on $\mathbb{T}^2$ for which all orbits sampled at prime times are dense.
We consider suspension semiflows of an angle multiplying map on the circle and study the distributions of periods of their periodic orbits. Under generic conditions on the roof function, we give an asymptotic formula on the number $π(T)$ of prime periodic orbits with period $\le T$. The error term is bounded, at least, by \[ \exp((1-\frac{1}{4\lceil χ_{\max}/h_{\mathrm{top}}\rceil}+\varepsilon) h_{\top} T)\qquad {in the limit $T\to \infty$} \] for arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$, where $h_{\mathrm{top}}$ and $χ_{\max}$ are respectively the topological entropy and the maximal Lyapunov exponen…
We obtain an analogue of the prime number theorem for a class of branched covering maps on the $2$-sphere called expanding Thurston maps $f$, which are topological models of some rational maps without any smoothness or holomorphicity assumption. More precisely, by studying dynamical zeta functions and, more generally, dynamical Dirichlet series for $f$, we show that the number of primitive periodic orbits of $f$, ordered by a weight on each point induced by a non-constant (eventually) positive real-valued Hölder continuous function $ϕ$ on $S^2$ satisfying some additional regularity conditions,…
For a rational polynomial $f$ and rational numbers $c, u$, we put $f_c(x):=f(x)+c$, and consider the Zsigmondy set $\mathcal{Z}(f_c,u)$ associated to the sequence $\{f_c^n(u)-u\}_{n\geq 0}$, where $f_c^n$ is the $n$-st iteration of $f_c$. In this paper, we prove that if $u$ is a rational critical point of $f$, then there exists an $\mathbf M_f>0$ such that $\mathbf M_f\geq \max_{c\in \mathbb{Q}}\{\#\mathcal{Z}(f_c,u)\}$.
Let $(b_n) = (b_1, b_2, ...)$ be a sequence of integers. A primitive prime divisor of a term $b_k$ is a prime which divides $b_k$ but does not divide any of the previous terms of the sequence. A zero orbit of a polynomial $f(z)$ is a sequence of integers $(c_n)$ where the $n$-th term is the $n$-th iterate of $f$ at 0. We consider primitive prime divisors of zero orbits of polynomials. In this note, we show that for integers $c$ and $d$, where $d > 1$ and $c \neq \pm 1$, every iterate in the zero orbit of $f(z) = z^d + c$ contains a primitive prime whenever zero has an infinite orbit. If $c = \…
We introduce a modification of Pillai's prime map: the prime-power map. This map fixes $1$, divides its argument by $p$ if it is a prime-power $p^k$, otherwise subtracts from its argument the largest prime-power not exceeding it. We study the iteration of this map over the positive integers, developing, firstly, results parallel to those known for the prime map. Subsequently, we compare its dynamical properties to those of a more manageable variant of the map under which any orbit admits an explicit description. Finally, we present some experimental observations, based on which we conjecture t…
Let $X$ be a closed invariant subset of the half--open annulus $\mathbb{A}$ such that $\mathbb{A} \setminus X$ is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{A}$. We prove that either the rotation number of all forward semi--orbits of accessible points of $X$ are well--defined and equal to the prime end rotation number or the same is true for all backward semi--orbits of accessible points of $X$.
We give a complete solution of the following problem: Find, classify and count the (classes of) periodic orbits on an equilateral triangle. We prove that Fagnano's period 3 orbit is the only periodic orbit with odd period. A periodic orbit is either prime or some d-fold iterate thereof. We count prime and iterate periodic orbits of period $2n$ via a bijection with a certain partition of $n$, then count only prime orbits using the prime factorization of $n$.
We present lower bounds for the orbit length of reduction modulo primes of parametric polynomial dynamical systems defined over the integers, under a suitable hypothesis on its set of preperiodic points over $\mathbb C$. Applying recent results of Baker and DeMarco~(2011) and of Ghioca, Krieger, Nguyen and Ye~(2017), we obtain explicit families of parametric polynomials and initial points such that the reductions modulo primes have long orbits, for all but a finite number of values of the parameters. This generalizes a previous lower bound due to Chang~(2015). As a by-product, we also slighly …
Free Borel $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are smoothly equivalent if there is a Borel bijection between the phase spaces that maps orbits onto orbits and is a $C^{\infty}$-smooth orientation preserving diffeomorphism between orbits. We show that all free non-tame Borel $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are smoothly equivalent in every dimension $d \ge 2$. This answers a question of B. Miller and C. Rosendal.
For the ternary quadratic form Q(x) = x^2 + y^2 - z^2 and a non-zero Pythagorean triple x_0 in Z^3 lying on the cone Q(x) = 0, we consider an orbit O = x_0 Gamma of a finitely generated subgroup Gamma < SO_Q(Z) with critical exponent exceeding 1/2. We find infinitely many Pythagorean triples in O whose hypotenuse, area, and product of side lengths have few prime factors, where "few" is explicitly quantified. We also compute the asymptotic of the number of such Pythagorean triples of norm at most T, up to bounded constants.
This is a text written for the Ennio De Giorgi Colloquio volume. It covers analogies between algebraic number theory and knot theory, analogies between analytic number theory and certain dynamical systems, and a report on our construction of dynamical systems for arithmetic schemes which realize some of these analogies.
The main purpose of this paper is to prove the smooth local orbital linearization theorem for smooth vector fields which admit a complete set of first integrals near a nondegenerate singular point. The main tools used in the proof of this theorem are the formal orbital linearization theorem for formal integrable vector fields, the blowing-up method, and the Sternberg-Chen isomorphism theorem for formally-equivalent smooth hyperbolic vector fields.
We prove the finiteness of the Zsigmondy set associated to the critical orbit of f(z) = z^d+c for rational values of c by finding an effective bound on the size of the set. For non-recurrent critical orbits, the Zsigmondy set is explicitly computed by utilizing effective dynamical height bounds. In the general case, we use Thue-style Diophantine approximation methods to bound the size of the Zsigmondy set when d >2, and complex-analytic methods when d=2.
In this paper, the general perturbation problem of piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with two switching planes is considered. Firstly, when the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov vector function is derived which can be used to study the number of periodic orbits bifurcated from the period annuli. Then, by using the obtained Melnikov vector function, we get an upper bound of the number of periodic orbits of a concrete $n$-dimensional piecewise smooth differential system.
By varying a parameter of a one-dimensional piecewise smooth map, stable periodic orbits are observed. In this paper, complete analytic characterization of these stable periodic orbits is obtained. An interesting relationship between the cardinality of orbits and their period is established. It is proved that for any $n$, there exist $ϕ(n)$ distinct admissible patterns of cardinality $n$. An algorithm to obtain these distinct admissible patterns is outlined. Additionally, a novel algorithm to find the range of parameter for which the orbit exists is proposed.
Given a polynomial f(z) = z^d + c over a global field K and a_0 in K, we study the density of prime ideals of K dividing at least one element of the orbit of a_0 under f. The density of such sets for linear polynomials has attracted much study, and the second author has examined several families of quadratic polynomials, but little is known in the higher-degree case. We show that for many choices of d and c this density is zero for all a_0, assuming K contains a primitive dth root of unity. The proof relies on several new results, including some ensuring the number of irreducible factors of th…
Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.
The Conley theory has a tool to guarantee the existence of periodic trajectories in isolating neighborhoods of semi-dynamical systems. We prove that the positive trajectories generated by a piecewise-smooth vector field $Z=(X, Y)$ defined in a closed manifold of three dimensions without the scape region produces a semi-dynamical system. Thus, we have built a semiflow that allows us to apply the classical Conley theory. Furthermore, we use it to guarantee the existence of periodic orbits in this class of piecewise-smooth vector fields.
We prove that the orbit of a non-periodic point at prime values of the horocycle flow in the modular surface is dense in a set of positive measure. For some special orbits we also prove that they are dense in the whole space (assuming the Ramanujan/Selberg conjectures for GL(2)/Q). In the process, we derive an effective version of Dani's Theorem for the (discrete) horocycle flow.
Let $ϕ(x) = x^d + c$ be an integral polynomial of degree at least 2, and consider the sequence $(ϕ^n(0))_{n=0}^\infty$, which is the orbit of $0$ under iteration by $ϕ$. Let $D_{d,c}$ denote the set of positive integers $n$ for which $n \mid ϕ^n(0)$. We give a characterization of $D_{d,c}$ in terms of a directed graph and describe a number of its properties, including its cardinality and the primes contained therein. In particular, we study the question of which primes $p$ have the property that the orbit of $0$ is a single $p$-cycle modulo $p$. We show that the set of such primes is finite wh…
A dynamic sieve method is designed according to the basic sieve method. It mainly refers to the symbolic dynamics theory. By this method, we could connect the prime system with familiar 'Logistic Mapping'. An interesting discovery is that the pattern of primes could be depicted by a series of orbits of this mapping. Some heuristic proofs for open problems like twin primes are obtained through this relation. This research gives a new viewpoint for the distribution of prime numbers.
We consider functional differential equations(FDEs) which are perturbations of smooth ordinary differential equations(ODEs). The FDE can involve multiple state-dependent delays or distributed delays (forward or backward). We show that, under some mild assumptions, if the ODE has a nondegenerate periodic orbit, then the FDE has a smooth periodic orbit. Moreover, we get smooth dependence of the periodic orbit and its frequency on parameters with high regularity. The result also applies to FDEs which are perturbations of some evolutionary partial differential equations(PDEs). The proof consists i…
Let $K$ be a global function field of characteristic $p$ and degree $D$ over $\mathbb F_{p}(t)$. We consider dynamical systems over the projective line $\mathbb P^1(K)$ defined by rational maps with at most one prime of bad reduction. The main result is an optimal bound for cycle lengths that only depends on $p$ and $D$. A bound for the cardinality of finite orbits is given as well. Our method is based on a careful analysis (for every prime of good reduction) of the $\mathfrak p$-adic distances between points belonging to the same finite orbit, in part motivated by previous work by Canci and P…
Let G:=SO(n,1)^\circ and Γbe a geometrically finite Zariski dense subgroup with critical exponent delta bigger than (n-1)/2. Under a spectral gap hypothesis on L^2(Γ\ G), which is always satisfied for delta>(n-1)/2 for n=2,3 and for delta>n-2 for n>= 4, we obtain an {\it effective} archimedean counting result for a discrete orbit of Γin a homogeneous space H\G, where H is the trivial group, an affine symmetric subgroup or a horospherical subgroup. More precisely, we show that for any effectively well-rounded family {B_T} of compact subsets in H\G, there exists η>0 such that #[e]\G\cap B_T=M(B_…
The investigation of the phase-space properties of structures encountered in a dynamical system is essential for understanding their formation and enhancement. In the present paper we explore the phase space in energy intervals where we have orbits that act as building blocks for boxy-peanut (b/p) and "{\sf X}-shaped" structures in rotating potentials of galactic type. We underline the significance of the rotational tori around the 3D families x1v1 and x1v1$^{\prime}$ that have been bifurcated from the planar x1 family. These tori play a multiple role: (i) They belong to quasi-periodic orbits …
We show that every parabolic orbit of a two-degree of freedom integrable system admits a $C^\infty$-smooth Hamiltonian circle action, which is persistent under small integrable $C^\infty$ perturbations. We deduce from this result the structural stability of parabolic orbits and show that they are all smoothly equivalent (in the non-symplectic sense) to a standard model. Our proof is based on showing that every symplectomorphism of a neighbourhood of a parabolic point preserving the integrals of motion is Hamiltonian whose generating function is smooth and constant on the connected components o…
We address the problem of counting periodic orbits of vector fields on smooth closed manifolds. The space of non-constant periodic orbits is enlarged to a complete space by adding the ghost orbits, which are decorations of the zeros of vector fields. Associated with any compact and open subset $Γ$ of the moduli space of periodic and ghost orbits, we define an integer weight. When the vector field moves along a path, and $Γ$ deforms in a compact and open family, we show that the weight function stays constant. We also give a number of examples and computations, which illustrate the applications…
