Let $K$ be a global function field of characteristic $p$ and degree $D$ over $\mathbb F_{p}(t)$. We consider dynamical systems over the projective line $\mathbb P^1(K)$ defined by rational maps with at most one prime of bad reduction. The main result is an optimal bound for cycle lengths that only depends on $p$ and $D$. A bound for the cardinality of finite orbits is given as well. Our method is based on a careful analysis (for every prime of good reduction) of the $\mathfrak p$-adic distances between points belonging to the same finite orbit, in part motivated by previous work by Canci and Paladino. Valuable insight is provided by a certain family of polynomials. In this case we also gain a good deal of information about the structure and size of the set of periodic points for polynomials of given degree.
We show that certain abelian varieties over $\Q$ with bad reduction at one prime only are modular by using methods based on the tables of Odlyzko and class field theory.
We tabulate polynomials in Z[t] with a given factorization partition, bad reduction entirely within a given set of primes, and satisfying auxiliary conditions associated to 0, 1, and infinity. We explain how these sets of polynomials are of particular interest because of their role in the construction of nonsolvable number fields of arbitrarily large degree and bounded ramification. Finally we discuss the similar but technically more complicated tabulation problem corresponding to removing the auxiliary conditions.
In this paper we study the problem of how to determine all elliptic curves defined over an arbitrary number field $K$ with good reduction outside a given finite set of primes $S$ of $K$ by solving $S$-unit equations. We give examples of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ and quadratic fields.
In this paper we introduce a new problem called the Isogenous Embedding Problem (IEP). The existence of solutions to this problem is related to the primes of bad reduction of CM curves of genus $3$ and we can detect potentially good reduction in absence of solutions. We propose an algorithm for computing the solutions to the IEP and run the algorithm through different families of curves. We were able to prove the reduction type of some particular curves at certain primes that were open cases in [LLLR21].
We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators…
Let X be a curve over a number field K with genus g>=2, $\pp$ a prime of O_K over an unramified rational prime p>2r, J the Jacobian of X, r=rank J(K), and $\scrX$ a regular proper model of X at $\pp$. Suppose r<g. We prove that #X(K)<=#\scrX(F_{\pp})+2r, extending the refined version of the Chabauty-Coleman bound to the case of bad reduction. The new technical insight is to isolate variants of the classical rank of a divisor on a curve which are better suited for singular curves and which satisfy Clifford's theorem.
Let l be a prime. We show that there do not exist any non-zero semi-stable abelian varieties over Q with good reduction outside l if and only if l=2, 3, 5, 7 or 13. We show that any semi-stable abelian variety over Q with good reduction outside l=11 is isogenous to a power of the Jacobian variety of the modular curve X_0(11). In addition we show that there do not exist any non-zero abelian varieties over Q with good reduction outside l acquiring semi-stable reduction at l over a tamely ramified extension if and only if l \le 5.
Let $p\ge5$ be a prime and $T$ a Kodaira type of the special fiber of an elliptic curve. We estimate the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ up to height $X$ with Kodaira type $T$ at $p$. This enables us find the proportion of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$, when ordered by height, with Kodaira type $T$ at a prime $p\ge5$ inside the set of all elliptic curves. This proportion is a rational function in $p$. For instance, we show that $\displaystyle\frac{p^8(p-1)}{p^9-1}$ of all elliptic curves with bad reduction at $p$ are of multiplicative reduction. Furthermore, we prove that the pri…
An abelian surface $A_{/{\mathbb Q}}$ of prime conductor $N$ is favorable if its 2-division field $F$ is an ${\mathcal S}_5$-extension with ramification index 5 over ${\mathbb Q}_2$. Let $A$ be favorable and let $B$ be any semistable abelian variety of dimension $2d$ and conductor $N^d$ such that $B[2]$ is filtered by copies of $A[2]$. We give a sufficient class field theoretic criterion on $F$ to guarantee that $B$ is isogenous to $A^d$. As expected from our paramodular conjecture, we conclude that there is one isogeny class of abelian surfaces for each conductor in $\{277, 349,461,797,971\}$…
Let $K$ be a number field and $ϕ\in K(z)$ a rational function. Let $S$ be the set of all archimedean places of $K$ and all non-archimedean places associated to the prime ideals of bad reduction for $ϕ$. We prove an upper bound for length of finite orbits of $ϕ$ in $\mathbb{P}_1(K)$ depending only on the cardinality of $S$.
Let $k$ be an algebraic closed field of characteristic zero. Let $K$ be the rational function field $K=k(t)$. Let $ϕ$ be a non isotrivial rational function in $K(z)$. We prove a bound for the cardinality of the set of $K$--rational preperiodic points for $ϕ$ in terms of the number of places of bad reduction and the degree $d$ of $ϕ$.
Let f(t) be a rational function of degree at least 2 with rational coefficients. For a given rational number x_0, define x_{n+1}=f(x_n) for each nonnegative integer n. If this sequence is not eventually periodic, then the difference x_{n+1}-x_n has a primitive prime factor for all sufficiently large n. This result provides a new proof of the infinitude of primes for each rational function f of degree at least 2.
Let $K$ be a number field and let $ϕ$ in $K(z)$ be a rational function of degree $d\geq 2$. Let $S$ be the places of bad reduction for $ϕ$ (including the archimedan places). Let $Per(ϕ,K)$, $PrePer(ϕ, K)$, and $Tail(ϕ,K)$ be the set of $K$-rational periodic, preperiodic, and purely preperiodic points of $ϕ$, respectively. The present paper presents two main results. The first result gives a bound for $|PrePer(ϕ,K)|$ in terms of the number of places of bad reduction $|S|$ and the degree $d$ of the rational function $ϕ$. This bound significantly improves a previous bound given by J. Canci and L.…
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.
Let $ϕ$ be an endomorphism of the projective line defined over a global field $K$. We prove a bound for the cardinality of the set of $K$-rational preperiodic points for $ϕ$ in terms of the number of places of bad reduction. The result is completely new in the function fields case and it is an improvement of the number fields case. An important tool is an $S$-unit equation theorem in 2 variables.
We consider approximation of vectors $\mathbf{z}\in F\otimes\mathbb{R}\cong\mathbb{R}^r\times\mathbb{C}^s$ by elements of a number field $F$ and construct examples of badly approximable vectors. These examples come from compact subspaces of $SL_2(\mathcal{O}_F)\backslash SL_2(F\otimes\mathbb{R})$ naturally associated to (totally indefinite, anisotropic) $F$-rational binary quadratic and Hermitian forms, a generalization of the well-known fact that quadratic irrationals are badly approximable over $\mathbb{Q}$.
The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions for when a polynomial or rational function over a field K is prime using its order of vanishing at infinity and the resultant.
We provide an explicit bound on the number of periodic points of a rational function defined over a number field, where the bound depends only on the number of primes of bad reduction and the degree of the function, and is linear in the degree. More generally, we show that there exists an explicit uniform bound on the number of periodic points for any rational function in a given finitely generated semigroup (under composition) of rational functions of degree at least 2. We show that under stronger assumptions the dependence on the degree of the map in the bounds can be removed.
Let $N$ be a non-squarefree positive integer and let $\ell$ be an odd prime such that $\ell^2$ does not divide $N$. Consider the Hecke ring $\mathbb{T}(N)$ of weight $2$ for $Γ_0(N)$, and its rational Eisenstein primes of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ containing $\ell$, defined in Section 3. If $\mathfrak{m}$ is such a rational Eisenstein prime, then we prove that $\mathfrak{m}$ is of the form $(\ell, ~\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N})$, where the ideal $\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N}$ of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ is also defined in Section 3. Furthermore, we prove that $\mathcal{C}(N)[\mathfrak{m}] \neq 0$, where $\mathcal{C}(N)$ is the …

In this paper, we use the methods of Andrade, Rudnick and Soundarajan to prove a Theorem about Lower bounds of moments of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions associated to monic irreducible polynomials over function fields.
Given a pair of regular quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Q}$ which are in the same genus and a finite set of primes $P$, we show that there is an effective way to determine a rational equivalence between these two quadratic forms which are integral over every prime in $P$. This answers one of the principal questions posed by Conway and Sloane in their book {\em Sphere packings, lattices and groups}, Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften [Fundamental Principles of Mathematical Sciences], Vol 290, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1999; page 402.
Let $\ell \geq 5$ be a prime and let $N$ be a non-squarefree integer not divisible by $\ell$. For a rational Eisenstein prime $\mathfrak{m}$ of the Hecke ring $\mathbb{T}(N)$ of level $N$ acting on $J_0(N)$, we precisely compute the dimension of the kernel $J_0(N)[\mathfrak{m}]$ under a mild assumption. In the case of level $qr^2$ which violates our mild assumption, we propose a conjecture based on Sage computations. Assuming this conjecture, we complete our computation in all the remaining cases.
Given a finitely generated multiplicative subgroup of rational numbers $Γ$, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we determine an asymptotic formula for average over prime numbers, powers of the order of the reduction group modulo $p$. The problem was considered in the case of rank $1$ by Pomerance and Kurlberg. In the case when $Γ$ contains only positive numbers, we give an explicit expression for the involved density in terms of an Euler product. We conclude with some numerical computations.
The set of primes where a hypergeomeric series with rational parameters is $p$-adically bounded is known by [10] to have a Dirichlet density. We establish a formula for this Dirichlet density and conjecture that it is rare for the density to be large. We prove this conjecture for hypergeometric series whose parameters have denominators equal to a prime of the form $p = 2q^r + 1$, where $q$ is an odd prime, by establishing an upper bound on the density of bounded primes in this case. The general case remains open. This paper is the output of an undergraduate research course taught by the first …
Let $C$ be a smooth, absolutely irreducible genus-$3$ curve over a number field $M$. Suppose that the Jacobian of $C$ has complex multiplication by a sextic CM-field $K$. Suppose further that $K$ contains no imaginary quadratic subfield. We give a bound on the primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $M$ such that the stable reduction of $C$ at $\mathfrak{p}$ contains three irreducible components of genus $1$.
Let $[K:\mathbb{Q}]=p$ be a prime number and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with $j(E) \in \mathbb{Q}$. We determine the all possibilities for $E(K)_{tors}$. We obtain these results by studying Galois representations of $E$ and of it's quadratic twists.
We show that, for any fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ and almost all primes $p$, the $g$-ary expansion of any fraction $m/p$ with $\gcd(m,p) = 1$ contains almost all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (5/24 - \varepsilon) \log_g p$. This complements a result of J. Bourgain, S. V. Konyagin, and I. E. Shparlinski that asserts that, for almost all primes, all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (41/504 -\varepsilon) \log_g p$ occur in the $g$-ary expansion of $m/p$.
Let K be a number field. We consider a local-global principle for elliptic curves E/K that admit (or do not admit) a rational isogeny of prime degree n. For suitable K (including K=Q), we prove that this principle holds when n = 1 mod 4, and for n < 7, but find a counterexample when n = 7 for an elliptic curve with j-invariant 2268945/128. For K = Q we show that, up to isomorphism, this is the only counterexample.

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, and $p$ a prime where $E$ has good reduction, and assume that $E$ admits a rational $p$-isogeny. In this paper, we study the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of $E$ over an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits, which we relate to the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of characters following the method of Greenberg--Vatsal. As a result of our study, we obtain a proof, under mild hypotheses, of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture, as well as a $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin and the $p$-part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dy…
In his work about Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence, for any odd prime p and any positive integer t, of a multiquadratic p-rational number field of degree 2 t. In this article, we prove that there exists infinitely many primes p such that the triquadratic field Q(p(p + 2), p(p -- 2), i) is p-rational. To do this, we use an analytic result, proved apart in section \S4, providing us with infinitely many prime numbers p such that p + 2 et p -- 2 have ''big'' square factors. Therefore the related imaginary quadratic subfields Q(i $\sqrt$ p + 2), Q(i $\sqrt$ p -- 2) and Q(…
Any ideal in a number field can be factored into a product of prime ideals. In this paper we study the prime ideal shortest vector problem (SVP) in the ring $ \Z[x]/(x^{2^n} + 1) $, a popular choice in the design of ideal lattice based cryptosystems. We show that a majority of rational primes lie under prime ideals admitting a polynomial time algorithm for SVP. Although the shortest vector problem of ideal lattices underpins the security of Ring-LWE cryptosystem, this work does not break Ring-LWE, since the security reduction is from the worst case ideal SVP to the average case Ring-LWE, and i…
We show that a genus $2$ curve over a number field whose jacobian has complex multiplication will usually have stable bad reduction at some prime. We prove this by computing the Faltings height of the jacobian in two different ways. First, we use a formula by Colmez and Obus specific to the CM case and valid when the CM field is an abelian extension of the rationals. This formula links the height and the logarithmic derivatives of an $L$-function. The second formula involves a decomposition of the height into local terms based on a hyperelliptic model. We use results of Igusa, Liu, and Saito t…
For each odd prime $p$, we prove the existence of infinitely many real quadratic fields which are $p$-rational. Explicit imaginary and real bi-quadratic $p$-rational fields are also given for each prime $p$. Using a recent method developed by Greenberg, we deduce the existence of Galois extensions of $\mathbf{Q}$ with Galois group isomorphic to an open subgroup of $GL_n(\mathbf{Z_p})$, for $n =4$ and $n =5$ and at least for all the primes $p <192.699.943$.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
Let $k$ be a field and $G$ be a finite group acting on the rational function field $k(x_g\,|\,g\in G)$ by $k$-automorphisms $h(x_g)=x_{hg}$ for any $g,h\in G$. Noether's problem asks whether the invariant field $k(G)=k(x_g\,|\,g\in G)^G$ is rational (i.e. purely transcendental) over $k$. In 1974, Lenstra gave a necessary and sufficient condition to this problem for abelian groups $G$. However, even for the cyclic group $C_p$ of prime order $p$, it is unknown whether there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $\mathbb{Q}(C_p)$ is rational over $\mathbb{Q}$. Only known $17$ primes $p$ for …
We initiate the study of an intrinsic notion of Diophantine approximation on a rational Carnot group $G$. If $G$ has Hausdorff dimension $Q$, we show that its Diophantine exponent is equal to $(Q+1)/Q$, generalizing the case $G=\mathbb R^n$. We furthermore obtain a precise asymptotic on the count of rational approximations. We then focus on the case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, distinguishing between two notions of Diophantine approximation by rational points in $\mathbb H^n$: Carnot Diophantine approximation and Siegel Diophantine approximation. After computing the Siegel Diophantin…
Let p be an odd prime number and let S be a finite set of prime numbers congruent to 1 modulo p. We prove that the group G_S(Q)(p) has cohomological dimension 2 if the linking diagram attached to S and p satisfies a certain technical condition, and we show that G_S(Q)(p) is a duality group in these cases. Furthermore, we investigate the decomposition behaviour of primes in the extension Q_S(p)/Q and we relate the cohomology of G_S(Q)(p) to the etale cohomology of the scheme Spec(Z)-S. Finally, we calculate the dualizing module.
For K a cyclic cubic number field with odd class number containing a unit w such that Norm(w)=Norm(1-w)=-1, we prove that the density of rational primes p that satisfy the given spin relation is equal to 1/2. Furthermore, we prove that this density restricted to rational primes that are 1 mod 4 is 1/4 and this density restricted to rational primes that are -1 mod 4 is 3/4.
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
