We address the problem of counting periodic orbits of vector fields on smooth closed manifolds. The space of non-constant periodic orbits is enlarged to a complete space by adding the ghost orbits, which are decorations of the zeros of vector fields. Associated with any compact and open subset $Γ$ of the moduli space of periodic and ghost orbits, we define an integer weight. When the vector field moves along a path, and $Γ$ deforms in a compact and open family, we show that the weight function stays constant. We also give a number of examples and computations, which illustrate the applications of our main theorem.
We provide lower bounds on the number of periodic Finsler billiard trajectories inside a quadratically convex smooth closed hypersurface $M$ in a $d$-dimensional Finsler space with possibly irreversible Finsler metric. An example of such a system is a billiard in a sufficiently weak magnetic field. The $r$-periodic Finsler billiard trajectories correspond to $r$-gons inscribed in $M$ and having extremal Finsler length. The cyclic group ${\mathbb Z}_r$ acts on these extremal polygons, and one counts the ${\mathbb Z}_r$-orbits. Using Morse and Lusternik-Schnirelmann theories, we prove that if $r…
We prove the equidistribution of (weighted) periodic orbits of the geodesic ow on noncompact negatively curved manifolds toward equilibrium states in the narrow topology, i.e. in the dual of bounded continuous functions. We deduce an exact asymptotic counting for periodic orbits (weighted or not), which was previously known only for geometrically nite manifolds.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group without compact factor and $Γ< G$ a torsion-free, cocompact, irreducible lattice. According to Selberg, periodic orbits of regular Weyl chamber flows live on maximal flat periodic tori of the space of Weyl chambers. We prove that these flat periodic tori equidistribute exponentially fast towards the quotient of the Haar measure. From the equidistribution formula, we deduce a higher rank prime geodesic theorem. These counting and equidistribution results also hold in the non cocompact, finite covolume case for $G=\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ and $Γ<\mathrm{SL}(d,…
The main result of this article is that if a $3$-manifold $M$ supports an Anosov flow, then the number of conjugacy classes in the fundamental group of $M$ grows exponentially fast with the length of the shortest orbit representative, hereby answering a question raised by Plante and Thurston in 1972. In fact we show that, when the flow is transitive, the exponential growth rate is exactly the topological entropy of the flow. We also show that taking only the shortest orbit representatives in each conjugacy classes still yields Bowen's version of the measure of maximal entropy. These results ar…
We study the rich structure of periodic stationary solutions of Nagumo reaction diffusion equation on lattices. By exploring the relationship with Nagumo equations on cyclic graphs we are able to divide these periodic solutions into equivalence classes that can be partially ordered and counted. In order to accomplish this, we use combinatorial concepts such as necklaces, bracelets and Lyndon words.
An existing dialogue between number theory and dynamical systems is advanced. A combinatorial device gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of non-negative integers to count the periodic points in a dynamical system. This is applied to study linear recurrence sequences which count periodic points. Instances where the $p$-parts of an integer sequence themselves count periodic points are studied. The Mersenne sequence provides one example, and the denominators of the Bernoulli numbers provide another. The methods give a dynamical interpretation of many classical congruences suc…
We study periodic wind-tree models, billiards in the plane endowed with $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodically located identical connected symmetric right-angled obstacles. We show asymptotic formulas for the number of (isotopy classes of) closed billiard trajectories (up to $\mathbb{Z}^2$-translations) on the wind-tree billiard. We also compute explicitly the associated Siegel-Veech constant for generic wind-tree billiards depending on the number of corners on the obstacle.
We study the spectrum of the Schrödinger operators with $n\times n$ matrix valued potentials on a finite interval subject to $θ-$periodic boundary conditions. For two such operators, corresponding to different values of $θ$, we compute the difference of their eigenvalue counting functions via the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian planes. In addition we derive a formula for the derivatives of the eigenvalues with respect to $θ$ in terms of the Maslov crossing form. Finally, we give a new shorter proof of a recent result relating the Morse and Maslov indices of the Schrödinger operator for a …
We study periodic wind-tree models, billiards in the plane endowed with $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodically located identical connected symmetric right-angled obstacles. We exhibit effective asymptotic formulas for the number of (isotopy classes of) periodic billiard trajectories (up to $\mathbb{Z}^2$-translations) on Veech wind-tree billiards, that is, wind-tree billiards whose underlying compact translation surfaces are Veech surfaces. We show that the error term depends on spectral properties of the Veech group and give explicit estimates in the case when obstacles are squares of side length $1/2$.

We present a general counting result for the unstable eigenvalues of linear operators of the form $JL$ in which $J$ and $L$ are skew- and self-adjoint operators, respectively. Assuming that there exists a self-adjoint operator $K$ such that the operators $JL$ and $JK$ commute, we prove that the number of unstable eigenvalues of $JL$ is bounded by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of~$K$. As an application, we discuss the transverse stability of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves in the classical KP-II (Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) equation. We show that these one-dimensional periodic wav…
We establish a precise asymptotic formula for the number of homotopy classes of periodic orbits for the geodesic flow on rank one manifolds of nonpositive curvature. This extends a celebrated result of G. A. Margulis to the nonuniformly hyperbolic case and strengthens previous results by G. Knieper. We also establish some useful properties of the measure of maximal entropy.
We establish central limit theorems for an action of a group G on a hyperbolic space X with respect to the counting measure on a Cayley graph of G. Our techniques allow us to remove the usual assumptions of properness and smoothness of the space, or cocompactness of the action. We provide several applications which require our general framework, including to lengths of geodesics in geometrically finite manifolds and to intersection numbers with submanifolds.
We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions with small amplitude of the non--linear planar double pendulum perturbed by smooth or non--smooth functions.
We consider billiard trajectories in a smooth convex body in $\mathbb R^d$ and estimate the number of distinct periodic trajectories that make exactly $p$ reflections per period at the boundary of the body. In the case of prime $p$ we obtain the lower bound $(d-2)(p-1)+2$, which is much better than the previous estimates.
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of invariant curves of planar mappings which are quasi-periodic in the spatial variable, satisfy the intersection property, $\mathcal{C}^{p}$ smooth with $p>2n+1$, $n$ is the number of frequencies.
In this paper, the general perturbation problem of piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with two switching planes is considered. Firstly, when the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov vector function is derived which can be used to study the number of periodic orbits bifurcated from the period annuli. Then, by using the obtained Melnikov vector function, we get an upper bound of the number of periodic orbits of a concrete $n$-dimensional piecewise smooth differential system.
In the present paper, we establish a reduction theorem for linear Schrödinger equation with finite smooth and time-quasi-periodic potential subject to Dirichlet boundary condition by means of KAM technique. Moreover, it is proved that the corresponding Schrödinger operator possesses the property of pure point spectra and zero Lyapunov exponent.
One knows that the set of quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent is open and dense in the analytic topology. In this paper, we construct cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent which can be approximated by ones with zero Lyapunov exponent in the space of ${\cal C}^ l$ ($1 \le l\le \infty$) smooth quasi-periodic cocycles. As a consequence, the set of quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent is not ${\cal C}^ l$ open.
We prove that periodic asymptotic expansiveness introduced in \cite{em} implies the equidistribution of periodic points to measures of maximal entropy. Then following Yomdin's approach \cite{Yom} we show by using semi-algebraic tools that $C^\infty$ interval maps and $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms satisfy this expansiveness property respectively for repelling and saddle hyperbolic points with Lyapunov exponents uniformly away from zero.
The Conley theory has a tool to guarantee the existence of periodic trajectories in isolating neighborhoods of semi-dynamical systems. We prove that the positive trajectories generated by a piecewise-smooth vector field $Z=(X, Y)$ defined in a closed manifold of three dimensions without the scape region produces a semi-dynamical system. Thus, we have built a semiflow that allows us to apply the classical Conley theory. Furthermore, we use it to guarantee the existence of periodic orbits in this class of piecewise-smooth vector fields.
In the present paper, the reducibility is derived for the wave equations with finitely smooth and time-quasi-periodic potential subjects to periodic boundary conditions. More exactly, the linear wave equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx}+Mu+\varepsilon (V_0(ωt)u_{xx}+V(ωt, x)u)=0,\;x\in \mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}$ can be reduced to a linear Hamiltonian system of a constant coefficient operator which is of pure imaginary point spectrum set, where $V$ is finitely smooth in $(t, x)$, quasi-periodic in time $t$ with Diophantine frequency $ω\in \mathbb{R}^{n},$ and $V_0$ is finitely smooth and quasi-periodic in tim…
Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.
By varying a parameter of a one-dimensional piecewise smooth map, stable periodic orbits are observed. In this paper, complete analytic characterization of these stable periodic orbits is obtained. An interesting relationship between the cardinality of orbits and their period is established. It is proved that for any $n$, there exist $ϕ(n)$ distinct admissible patterns of cardinality $n$. An algorithm to obtain these distinct admissible patterns is outlined. Additionally, a novel algorithm to find the range of parameter for which the orbit exists is proposed.
We consider functional differential equations(FDEs) which are perturbations of smooth ordinary differential equations(ODEs). The FDE can involve multiple state-dependent delays or distributed delays (forward or backward). We show that, under some mild assumptions, if the ODE has a nondegenerate periodic orbit, then the FDE has a smooth periodic orbit. Moreover, we get smooth dependence of the periodic orbit and its frequency on parameters with high regularity. The result also applies to FDEs which are perturbations of some evolutionary partial differential equations(PDEs). The proof consists i…
We consider a counting problem in the setting of hyperbolic dynamics. Let $ϕ_t : Λ\to Λ$ be a weak mixing hyperbolic flow. We count the proportion of prime periodic orbits of $ϕ_t$, with length less than $T$, that satisfy an averaging condition related to a Hölder continuous function $f: Λ\to \mathbb{R}$. We show, assuming an approximability condition on $ϕ$, that as $T \to \infty$, we obtain a central limit theorem.
Counting periodic orbits of endomorphisms on the 2-torus is considered, with special focus on the relation between global and local aspects and between the dynamical zeta function on the torus and its analogue on finite lattices. The situation on the lattices, up to local conjugacy, is completely determined by the determinant, the trace and a third invariant of the matrix defining the toral endomorphism.
We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelli…
We derive a precise energy stability criterion for smooth periodic waves in the Degasperis--Procesi (DP) equation. Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of…
Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a…
In this paper the statement of the second Bogolyubov's theorem on periodic solutions of smooth systems with small parameter is justified for discountinuous systems. It is assumed that the generating solution intersects the discontinuity hyperplanes transversally and that the system is smooth outside of these hyperplanes. Such a situation is natural for mechanical systems with dry friction and without constraints and sticking of oscillations. To illustrate the result we prove stability of the velocity of vibration-induced displacement.
We consider the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in higher dimension with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with a non-local smoothing nonlinearity. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions. In the fully resonant case we find solutions which at leading order are wave packets, in the sense that they continue linear solutions with an arbitrarily large number of resonant modes. The main difficulty in the proof consists in solving a "small divisor problem" which we do by using a renormalisation group approach.
We prove that either there exists at least one hamilton periodic orbit in a given energy close smooth hypersurface or there exist at least two hamilton periodic orbits in a near-by energy close smooth hypersurface. More general results also hold.
The aim of this paper is to study growth properties of group extensions of hyperbolic dynamical systems, where we do not assume that the extension satisfies the symmetry conditions seen, for example, in the work of Stadlbauer on symmetric group extensions and of the authors on geodesic flows. Our main application is to growth rates of periodic orbits for covers of an Anosov flow: we reduce the problem of counting periodic orbits in an amenable cover $X$ to counting in a maximal abelian subcover $X^{\mathrm{ab}}$. In this way, we obtain an equivalence for the Gurevič entropy: $h(X)=h(X^{\mathrm…
The averaging method combined with the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction provides sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of the following class of perturbative $T$-periodic nonautonomous differential equations $x'=F_0(t,x)+\varepsilon F(t,x,\varepsilon)$. Such periodic solutions bifurcate from a manifold $\mathcal{Z}$ of periodic solutions of the unperturbed system $x'=F_0(t,x)$. Determining the stability of this kind of periodic solutions involves the computation of eigenvalues of matrix-valued functions $M(\varepsilon)$, which can done using the theory of $k$-hyperbolic matri…
We prove that every $C^\infty$-smooth, area preserving diffeomorphism of the closed 2-disk having not more than one periodic point is the uniform limit of periodic $C^\infty$-smooth diffeomorphisms. In particular every smooth irrational pseudo-rotation can be $C^0$-approximated by integrable systems. This partially answers a long standing question of A. Katok regarding zero entropy Hamiltonian systems in low dimensions. Our approach uses pseudoholomorphic curve techniques from symplectic geometry.
We consider asymptotic orbit-counting problems for certain expansive actions by commuting automorphisms of compact groups. A dichotomy is found between systems with asymptotically more periodic orbits than the topological entropy predicts, and those for which there is no excess of periodic orbits.
There are two algebraic lower bounds of the number of n-periodic points of a self-map f:M\to M of a compact smooth manifold of dimension at least 3 : NF_n(f)=min {#Fix(g^n) ;g\sim f; g continuous} and NJD_n(f)=min {#Fix}(g^n) ;g\sim f; g smooth}}. In general NJD_n(f) may be much greater than NF_n(f). We show that for a self-map of a semi-simple Lie group, inducing the identity fundamental group homomorphism, the equality NF_n(f)=NJD_n(f) holds for all n iff all eigenvalues of a quotient cohomology homomorphism induced by f have moduli \le 1.
We consider the Boussinesq PDE perturbed by a time-dependent forcing. Even though there is no smoothing effect for arbitrary smooth initial data, we are able to apply the method of self-consistent bounds to deduce the existence of smooth classical periodic solutions in the vicinity of 0. The proof is non-perturbative and relies on construction of periodic isolating segments in the Galerkin projections.
We prove a very general Weyl-type law for Periodic Floer Homology, estimating the action of twisted Periodic Floer Homology classes over essentially any coefficient ring in terms of the grading and the degree, and recovering the Calabi invariant of Hamiltonians in the limit. We also prove a strong non-vanishing result, showing that under a monotonicity assumption which holds for a dense set of maps, the Periodic Floer Homology has infinite rank. An application of these results yields that a $C^{\infty}$-generic area-preserving diffeomorphism of a closed surface has a dense set of periodic poin…
For Hill's equations with matrix valued periodic potential, we discuss relations between the Morse index, counting the number of unstable eigenvalues, and the Maslov index, counting the number of signed intersections of a path in the space of Lagrangian planes with a fixed plane. We adapt to the one dimensional periodic setting the strategy of a recent paper by J. Deng and C. Jones relating the Morse and Maslov indices for multidimensional elliptic eigenvalue problems.
