This paper compares the performance of seven different element agglomeration algorithms on unstructured triangular/tetrahedral meshes when used as part of a geometric multigrid. Five of these algorithms come from the literature on AMGe multigrid and mesh partitioning methods. The resulting multigrid schemes are tested matrix-free on two problems in 2D and 3D taken from radiation transport applications; one of which is in the diffusion limit. In two dimensions all coarsening algorithms result in multigrid methods which perform similarly, but in three dimensions aggressive element agglomeration performed by METIS produces the shortest runtimes and multigrid setup times.
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
In this paper we analyse the convergence properties of two-level, W-cycle and V-cycle agglomeration-based geometric multigrid schemes for the numerical solution of the linear system of equations stemming from the lowest order $C^0$-conforming Virtual Element discretization of two-dimensional second-order elliptic partial differential equations. The sequence of agglomerated tessellations are nested, but the corresponding multilevel virtual discrete spaces are generally non-nested thus resulting into non-nested multigrid algorithms. We prove the uniform convergence of the two-level method with r…
Agglomeration-based strategies are important both within adaptive refinement algorithms and to construct scalable multilevel algebraic solvers. In order to automatically perform agglomeration of polygonal grids, we propose the use of Machine Learning (ML) strategies, that can naturally exploit geometrical information about the mesh in order to preserve the grid quality, enhancing performance of numerical methods and reducing the overall computational cost. In particular, we employ the k-means clustering algorithm and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to partition the connectivity graph of a computa…
This paper introduces a novel geometric multigrid solver for unstructured curved surfaces. Multigrid methods are highly efficient iterative methods for solving systems of linear equations. Despite the success in solving problems defined on structured domains, generalizing multigrid to unstructured curved domains remains a challenging problem. The critical missing ingredient is a prolongation operator to transfer functions across different multigrid levels. We propose a novel method for computing the prolongation for triangulated surfaces based on intrinsic geometry, enabling an efficient geome…

Multigrid methods are popular for solving linear systems derived from discretizing PDEs. Local Fourier Analysis (LFA) is a technique for investigating and tuning multigrid methods. P-multigrid is popular for high-order or spectral finite element methods, especially on unstructured meshes. In this paper, we introduce LFAToolkit.jl, a new Julia package for LFA of high-order finite element methods. LFAToolkit.jl analyzes preconditioning techniques for arbitrary systems of second order PDEs and supports mixed finite element methods. Specifically, we develop LFA of p-multigrid with arbitrary second…
A nonlinear multigrid solver for two-phase flow and transport in a mixed fractional-flow velocity-pressure-saturation formulation is proposed. The solver, which is under the framework of the full approximation scheme (FAS), extends our previous work on nonlinear multigrid for heterogeneous diffusion problems. The coarse spaces in the multigrid hierarchy are constructed by first aggregating degrees of freedom, and then solving some local flow problems. The mixed formulation and the choice of coarse spaces allow us to assemble the coarse problems without visiting finer levels during the solving …

We expand the applicabilities and capabilities of an already existing space-time parallel method based on a block Jacobi smoother. First we formulate a more detailed criterion for spatial coarsening, which enables the method to deal with unstructured meshes and varying material parameters. Further we investigate the application to the eddy-current equation, where the non-trivial kernel of the curl operator causes severe problems. This is remedied with a new nodal auxiliary space correction. We proceed to identify convergence rates by local Fourier analysis and numerical experiments. Finally, w…

In marine offshore engineering, cost-efficient simulation of unsteady water waves and their nonlinear interaction with bodies are important to address a broad range of engineering applications at increasing fidelity and scale. We consider a fully nonlinear potential flow (FNPF) model discretized using a Galerkin spectral element method to serve as a basis for handling both wave propagation and wave-body interaction with high computational efficiency within a single modellingapproach. We design and propose an efficientO(n)-scalable computational procedure based on geometric p-multigrid for solv…
We propose a new high order accurate nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations (PDE) on unstructured polygonal Voronoi meshes. Rather than using classical polynomials of degree N inside each element, in our new approach the discrete solution is represented by piecewise continuous polynomials of degree N within each Voronoi element, using a continuous finite element basis defined on a subgrid inside each polygon. We call the resulting subgrid basis an agglomerated finite element (AFE) basis for the DG method on ge…
In this work, we provide a performance comparison between the Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and the Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) preconditioners for cardiac mechanics on both structured and unstructured finite element meshes. The mechanical behavior of myocardium can be described by the equations of three-dimensional finite elasticity, which are discretized by finite elements in space and yield the solution of a large scale nonlinear algebraic system. This problem is solved by a Newton-Krylov method, where the solution of the Jacobian linear system is accelerated by BDDC/AM…
