Multigrid methods are popular for solving linear systems derived from discretizing PDEs. Local Fourier Analysis (LFA) is a technique for investigating and tuning multigrid methods. P-multigrid is popular for high-order or spectral finite element methods, especially on unstructured meshes. In this paper, we introduce LFAToolkit.jl, a new Julia package for LFA of high-order finite element methods. LFAToolkit.jl analyzes preconditioning techniques for arbitrary systems of second order PDEs and supports mixed finite element methods. Specifically, we develop LFA of p-multigrid with arbitrary second-order PDEs using high-order finite element discretizations and examine the performance of Jacobi and Chebyshev smoothing for two-grid schemes with aggressive p-coarsening. A natural extension of this LFA framework is the analysis of h-multigrid for finite element discretizations or finite difference discretizations that can be represented in the language of finite elements. With this extension, we can replicate previous work on the LFA of h-multigrid for arbitrary order discretizations using a convenient and extensible abstraction. Examples in one, two, and three dimensions are presented to validate our LFA of p-multigrid for the Laplacian and linear elasticity.
In this paper we present a Local Fourier Analysis of a space-time multigrid solver for a hyperbolic test problem. The space-time discretization is based on arbitrarily high order discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods in time and a first order finite volume method in space. We apply a block Jacobi smoother and consider coarsening in space-time, as well as temporal coarsening only. Asymptotic convergence factors for the smoother and the two-grid method for both coarsening strategies are presented. For high CFL numbers, the convergence factors for both strategies are $0.5$ for first ord…
The Fourier analysis of the \emph{p}-multigrid acceleration technique is considered for a dual-time scheme applied to the advection-diffusion equation with various cycle configurations. It is found that improved convergence can be achieved through \emph{V}-cycle asymmetry where additional prolongation smoothing is applied. Experiments conducted on the artificial compressibility formulation of the Navier--Stokes equations found that these analytic findings could be observed numerically in the pressure residual, whereas velocity terms---which are more hyperbolic in character---benefited primaril…
This paper compares the performance of seven different element agglomeration algorithms on unstructured triangular/tetrahedral meshes when used as part of a geometric multigrid. Five of these algorithms come from the literature on AMGe multigrid and mesh partitioning methods. The resulting multigrid schemes are tested matrix-free on two problems in 2D and 3D taken from radiation transport applications; one of which is in the diffusion limit. In two dimensions all coarsening algorithms result in multigrid methods which perform similarly, but in three dimensions aggressive element agglomeration …
Multigrid methods are popular solution algorithms for many discretized PDEs, either as standalone iterative solvers or as preconditioners, due to their high efficiency. However, the choice and optimization of multigrid components such as relaxation schemes and grid-transfer operators is crucial to the design of optimally efficient algorithms. It is well--known that local Fourier analysis (LFA) is a useful tool to predict and analyze the performance of these components. In this paper, we develop a local Fourier analysis of monolithic multigrid methods based on additive Vanka relaxation schemes …
In this paper we analyse the convergence properties of two-level, W-cycle and V-cycle agglomeration-based geometric multigrid schemes for the numerical solution of the linear system of equations stemming from the lowest order $C^0$-conforming Virtual Element discretization of two-dimensional second-order elliptic partial differential equations. The sequence of agglomerated tessellations are nested, but the corresponding multilevel virtual discrete spaces are generally non-nested thus resulting into non-nested multigrid algorithms. We prove the uniform convergence of the two-level method with r…
We present a mesh-independent and parameter-robust multigrid solver for the Scott-Vogelius discretisation of the nearly incompressible linear elasticity equations on meshes with a macro element structure. The discretisation achieves exact representation of the limiting divergence constraint at moderate polynomial degree. Both the relaxation and multigrid transfer operators exploit the macro structure for robustness and efficiency. For the relaxation, we use the existence of local Fortin operators on each macro cell to construct a local space decomposition with parameter-robust convergence. For…
This note describes the full approximation storage (FAS) multigrid scheme for an easy one-dimensional nonlinear boundary value problem. The problem is discretized by a simple finite element (FE) scheme. We apply both FAS V-cycles and F-cycles, with a nonlinear Gauss-Seidel smoother, to solve the resulting finite-dimensional problem. The mathematics of the FAS restriction and prolongation operators, in the FE case, are explained. A self-contained Python program implements the scheme. Optimal performance, i.e. work proportional to the number of unknowns, is demonstrated for both kinds of cycles,…
Local Fourier analysis is a useful tool for predicting and analyzing the performance of many efficient algorithms for the solution of discretized PDEs, such as multigrid and domain decomposition methods. The crucial aspect of local Fourier analysis is that it can be used to minimize an estimate of the spectral radius of a stationary iteration, or the condition number of a preconditioned system, in terms of a symbol representation of the algorithm. In practice, this is a "minimax" problem, minimizing with respect to solver parameters the appropriate measure of work, which involves maximizing ov…
We present a tailored multigrid method for linear problems stemming from a Nitsche-based extended finite element method (XFEM). Our multigrid method is robust with respect to highly varying coefficients and the number of interfaces in a domain. It shows level independent convergence rates when applied to different variants of Nitsche's method. Generally, multigrid methods require a hierarchy of finite element (FE) spaces which can be created geometrically using a hierarchy of nested meshes. However, in the XFEM framework, standard multigrid methods might demonstrate poor convergence properties…

We consider the widely used continuous $\mathcal{Q}_{k}$-$\mathcal{Q}_{k-1}$ quadrilateral or hexahedral Taylor-Hood elements for the finite element discretization of the Stokes and generalized Stokes systems in two and three spatial dimensions. For the fast solution of the corresponding symmetric, but indefinite system of finite element equations, we propose and analyze matrix-free monolithic geometric multigrid solvers that are based on appropriately scaled Chebyshev-Jacobi smoothers. The analysis is based on results by Schöberl and Zulehner (2003). We present and discuss several numerical r…

Internal interfaces in a domain could exist as a material defect or they can appear due to propagations of cracks. Discretization of such geometries and solution of the contact problem on the internal interfaces can be computationally challenging. We employ an unfitted Finite Element (FE) framework for the discretization of the domains and develop a tailored, globally convergent, and efficient multigrid method for solving contact problems on the internal interfaces. In the unfitted FE methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space has to be modified…
In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utili…

Local Fourier analysis is a commonly used tool to assess the quality and aid in the construction of geometric multigrid methods for translationally invariant operators. In this paper we automate the process of local Fourier analysis and present a framework that can be applied to arbitrary, including non-orthogonal, repetitive structures. To this end we introduce the notion of crystal structures and a suitable definition of corresponding wave functions, which allow for a natural representation of almost all translationally invariant operators that are encountered in applications, e.g., discreti…
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…

It is known that the solution of a conservative steady-state two-sided fractional diffusion problem can exhibit singularities near the boundaries. As consequence of this, and due to the conservative nature of the problem, we adopt a finite volume elements discretization approach over a generic non-uniform mesh. We focus on grids mapped by a smooth function which consist in a combination of a graded mesh near the singularity and a uniform mesh where the solution is smooth. Such a choice gives rise to Toeplitz-like discretization matrices and thus allows a low computational cost of the matrix-ve…

In marine offshore engineering, cost-efficient simulation of unsteady water waves and their nonlinear interaction with bodies are important to address a broad range of engineering applications at increasing fidelity and scale. We consider a fully nonlinear potential flow (FNPF) model discretized using a Galerkin spectral element method to serve as a basis for handling both wave propagation and wave-body interaction with high computational efficiency within a single modellingapproach. We design and propose an efficientO(n)-scalable computational procedure based on geometric p-multigrid for solv…
We present families of space-time finite element methods (STFEMs) for a coupled hyperbolic-parabolic system of poro- or thermoelasticity. Well-posedness of the discrete problems is proved. Higher order approximations inheriting most of the rich structure of solutions to the continuous problem on computationally feasible grids are naturally embedded. However, the block structure and solution of the algebraic systems become increasingly complex for these members of the families. We present and analyze a robust geometric multigrid (GMG) preconditioner for GMRES iterations. The GMG method uses a l…
We present a parallelized geometric multigrid (GMG) method, based on the cell-based Vanka smoother, for higher order space-time finite element methods (STFEM) to the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The STFEM is implemented as a time marching scheme. The GMG solver is applied as a preconditioner for GMRES iterations. Its performance properties are demonstrated for 2d and 3d benchmarks of flow around a cylinder. The key ingredients of the GMG approach are the construction of the local Vanka smoother over all degrees of freedom in time of the respective subinterval and its efficient appl…
Advanced finite-element discretizations and preconditioners for models of poroelasticity have attracted significant attention in recent years. The equations of poroelasticity offer significant challenges in both areas, due to the potentially strong coupling between unknowns in the system, saddle-point structure, and the need to account for wide ranges of parameter values, including limiting behavior such as incompressible elasticity. This paper was motivated by an attempt to develop monolithic multigrid preconditioners for the discretization developed in [48]; we show here why this is a diffic…
We present a simple finite element formulation of mass-consistent approximation, and a fast multigrid iterative method with adaptive semicoarsening, which maintains the convergence of the iterations over a range of grids and penalty coefficients. The method is designed to run in each time step of WRF-SFIRE and replace the interpolation from the atmospheric mesh to the fire mesh by a diagnostic model of the air flow over a fine-scale terrain.
