In this work, we propose a robust and easily implemented algebraic multigrid method as a stand-alone solver or a preconditioner in Krylov subspace methods for solving either symmetric and positive definite or saddle point linear systems of equations arising from the finite element discretization of the vector Laplacian problem, linear elasticity problem in pure displacement and mixed displacement-pressure form, and Stokes problem in mixed velocity-pressure form in 3D, respectively. We use hierarchical quadratic basis functions to construct the finite element spaces. A new heuristic algebraic coarsening strategy is introduced for construction of the hierarchical coarse system matrices. We focus on numerical study of the mesh-independence robustness of the algebraic multigrid and the algebraic multigrid preconditioned Krylov subspace methods.
Saddle point problems arise in a variety of applications, e.g., when solving the Stokes equations. They can be formulated such that the system matrix is symmetric, but indefinite, so the variational convergence theory that is usually used to prove multigrid convergence cannot be applied. In a 2016 paper in Numerische Mathematik Notay has presented a different algebraic approach that analyzes properly preconditioned saddle point problems, proving convergence of the Two-Grid method. In the present paper we analyze saddle point problems where the blocks are circulant within this framework. We are…
In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utili…
In recent years, solvers for finite-element discretizations of linear or linearized saddle-point problems, like the Stokes and Oseen equations, have become well established. There are two main classes of preconditioners for such systems: those based on block-factorization approach and those based on monolithic multigrid. Both classes of preconditioners have several critical choices to be made in their composition, such as the selection of a suitable relaxation scheme for monolithic multigrid. From existing studies, some insight can be gained as to what options are preferable in low-performance…
Large linear systems of saddle-point type have arisen in a wide variety of applications throughout computational science and engineering. The discretizations of distributed control problems have a saddle-point structure. The numerical solution of saddle-point problems has attracted considerable interest in recent years. In this work, we propose a novel Braess-Sarazin multigrid relaxation scheme for finite element discretizations of the distributed control problems, where we use the stiffness matrix obtained from the five-point finite difference method for the Laplacian to approximate the inver…
The dual formulation for linear elasticity, in contrast to the primal formulation, is not affected by locking, as it is based on the stresses as main unknowns. Thus it is quite attractive for nearly incompressible and incompressible materials. Discretization with mixed finite elements will lead to -- possibly large -- linear saddle point systems with a particular structure. Whereas efficient multigrid methods exist for solving problems in mixed plane elasticity, to the knowledge of the authors, no multigrid methods are readily available for the general dual formulation. Two are the main challe…

Two new relaxation schemes are proposed for the smoothing step in the geometric multigrid solution of PDEs on 2D and 3D stretched structured grids. The new schemes are characterized by efficient line relaxation on branched sets of lines of alternating colour, where the lines are constructed to be everywhere orthogonal to the local direction of maximum grid clustering. Tweed relaxation is best suited for grid clustering near the boundaries of the computational domain, whereas wireframe relaxation is best suited for grid clustering near the centre of the computational domain. On strongly stretch…
The solution of saddle-point problems, such as the Stokes equations, is a challenging task, especially in large-scale problems. Multigrid methods are one of the most efficient solvers for such systems of equations and can achieve convergence rates independent of the problem size. The smoother is a crucial component of multigrid methods and significantly affects its overall efficiency. We propose a Vanka-type smoother that we refer to as Restricted Additive Vanka and investigate its convergence in the context of adaptive geometric multigrid methods for the Stokes equations. The proposed smoothe…
Unfitted finite element methods have emerged as a popular alternative to classical finite element methods for the solution of partial differential equations and allow modeling arbitrary geometries without the need for a boundary-conforming mesh. On the other hand, the efficient solution of the resultant system is a challenging task because of the numerical ill-conditioning that typically entails from the formulation of such methods. We use an adaptive geometric multigrid solver for the solution of the mixed finite cell formulation of saddle-point problems and investigate its convergence in the…

Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…

In this paper we study and compare two multigrid relaxation schemes with coarsening by two, three, and four for solving elliptic sparse optimal control problems with control constraints. First, we perform a detailed local Fourier analysis (LFA) of a well-known collective Jacobi relaxation (CJR) scheme, where the optimal smoothing factors are derived. This insightful analysis reveals that the optimal relaxation parameters depend on mesh size and regularization parameters, which was not investigated in literature. Second, we propose and analyze a new mass-based Braess-Sarazin relaxation (BSR) sc…
In this paper we analyse the convergence properties of two-level, W-cycle and V-cycle agglomeration-based geometric multigrid schemes for the numerical solution of the linear system of equations stemming from the lowest order $C^0$-conforming Virtual Element discretization of two-dimensional second-order elliptic partial differential equations. The sequence of agglomerated tessellations are nested, but the corresponding multilevel virtual discrete spaces are generally non-nested thus resulting into non-nested multigrid algorithms. We prove the uniform convergence of the two-level method with r…
Effective relaxation methods are necessary for good multigrid convergence. For many equations, standard Jacobi and Gauß-Seidel are inadequate, and more sophisticated space decompositions are required; examples include problems with semidefinite terms or saddle point structure. In this paper we present a unifying software abstraction, PCPATCH, for the topological construction of space decompositions for multigrid relaxation methods. Space decompositions are specified by collecting topological entities in a mesh (such as all vertices or faces) and applying a construction rule (such as taking all…
The main focus of this paper is the characterization and exploitation of the asymptotic spectrum of the saddle--point matrix sequences arising from the discretization of optimization problems constrained by elliptic partial differential equations. We uncover the existence of a hidden structure in these matrix sequences, namely, we show that these are indeed an example of Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences. We show that this enables a sharper characterization of the spectral properties of such sequences than the one that is available by using only the fact that we deal with saddle--po…
This paper introduces a novel approach to algebraic multigrid methods for large systems of linear equations coming from finite element discretizations of certain elliptic second order partial differential equations. Based on a discrete energy made up of edge and vertex contributions, we are able to develop coarsening criteria that guarantee two-level convergence even for systems of equations. This energy also allows us to construct prolongations with prescribed sparsity pattern that still preserve kernel vectors exactly. These allow for a straightforward optimization that simplifies paralleliz…

We present a Boundary Local Fourier Analysis (BLFA) to optimize the relaxation parameters of boundary conditions in a multigrid framework. The method is implemented to solve elliptic equations on curved domains embedded in a uniform Cartesian mesh, although it is designed to be extended for general PDEs in curved domains, wherever a multigrid technique can be implemented. The boundary is implicitly defined by a level-set function and a ghost-point technique is employed to treat the boundary conditions. Existing strategies in literature adopt a constant relaxation parameter on the whole boundar…
