In this paper we analyse the convergence properties of V-cycle multigrid algorithms for the numerical solution of the linear system of equations arising from discontinuous Galerkin discretization of second-order elliptic partial differential equations on polytopal meshes. Here, the sequence of spaces that stands at the basis of the multigrid scheme is possibly non nested and is obtained based on employing agglomeration with possible edge/face coarsening. We prove that the method converges uniformly with respect to the granularity of the grid and the polynomial approximation degree p, provided that the number of smoothing steps, which depends on p, is chosen sufficiently large.
Discontinuous Galerkin (dG) methods on meshes consisting of polygonal/polyhedral (henceforth, collectively termed as \emph{polytopic}) elements have received considerable attention in recent years. Due to the physical frame basis functions used typically and the quadrature challenges involved, the matrix-assembly step for these methods is often computationally cumbersome. To address this important practical issue, this work proposes two parallel assembly implementation algorithms on CUDA-enabled graphics cards for the interior penalty dG method on polytopic meshes for various classes of linear…
In this article, using the weighted discrete least-squares, we propose a patch reconstruction finite element space with only one degree of freedom per element. As the approximation space, it is applied to the discontinuous Galerkin methods with the upwind scheme for the steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems over polytopic meshes. The optimal error estimates are provided in both diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated regimes. Furthermore, several numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical error estimates, and to well approximate boundary layers and/or inte…
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.

It is known that the solution of a conservative steady-state two-sided fractional diffusion problem can exhibit singularities near the boundaries. As consequence of this, and due to the conservative nature of the problem, we adopt a finite volume elements discretization approach over a generic non-uniform mesh. We focus on grids mapped by a smooth function which consist in a combination of a graded mesh near the singularity and a uniform mesh where the solution is smooth. Such a choice gives rise to Toeplitz-like discretization matrices and thus allows a low computational cost of the matrix-ve…
Problems arising in Earth's mantle convection involve finding the solution to Stokes systems with large viscosity contrasts. These systems contain localized features which, even with adaptive mesh refinement, result in linear systems that can be on the order of 10^9 or more unknowns. One common approach for preconditioning to the velocity block of these systems is to apply an Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) v-cycle (as is done in the ASPECT software, for example), however, with AMG, robustness can be difficult with respect to problem size and number of parallel processes. Additionally, we see an inc…
This work studies three multigrid variants for matrix-free finite-element computations on locally refined meshes: geometric local smoothing, geometric global coarsening, and polynomial global coarsening. We have integrated the algorithms into the same framework-the open-source finite-element library deal.II-, which allows us to make fair comparisons regarding their implementation complexity, computational efficiency, and parallel scalability as well as to compare the measurements with theoretically derived performance models. Serial simulations and parallel weak and strong scaling on up to 147…
We present a stability analysis of the Discontinuous Galerkin method on polygonal and polyhedral meshes (PolyDG) for the Stokes problem. In particular, we analyze the discrete inf-sup condition for different choices of the polynomial approximation order of the velocity and pressure approximation spaces. To this aim, we employ a generalized inf-sup condition with a pressure stabilization term. We also prove a priori hp-version error estimates in suitable norms. We numerically check the behaviour of the inf-sup constant and the order of convergence with respect to the mesh configuration, the mes…

This paper compares the performance of seven different element agglomeration algorithms on unstructured triangular/tetrahedral meshes when used as part of a geometric multigrid. Five of these algorithms come from the literature on AMGe multigrid and mesh partitioning methods. The resulting multigrid schemes are tested matrix-free on two problems in 2D and 3D taken from radiation transport applications; one of which is in the diffusion limit. In two dimensions all coarsening algorithms result in multigrid methods which perform similarly, but in three dimensions aggressive element agglomeration …
In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utili…
A simple and efficient interface-fitted mesh generation algorithm is developed in this paper. This algorithm can produce a local anisotropic fitting mixed mesh which consists of both triangles and quadrilaterals near the interface. A new finite element method is proposed for second order elliptic interface problems based on the resulting mesh. Optimal approximation capabilities on anisotropic elements are proved in both the $H^1$ and $L^2$ norms. The discrete system is usually ill-conditioned due to anisotropic and small elements near the interface. Thereupon, a multigrid method is presented t…

We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…

In marine offshore engineering, cost-efficient simulation of unsteady water waves and their nonlinear interaction with bodies are important to address a broad range of engineering applications at increasing fidelity and scale. We consider a fully nonlinear potential flow (FNPF) model discretized using a Galerkin spectral element method to serve as a basis for handling both wave propagation and wave-body interaction with high computational efficiency within a single modellingapproach. We design and propose an efficientO(n)-scalable computational procedure based on geometric p-multigrid for solv…
In a previous paper (Lathouwers and Perkó, 2019) we have developed an efficient angular multigrid preconditioner for the Boltzmann transport equation with forward-peaked scatter modeled by the Fokker-Planck approximation. The discretization was based on a completely discontinuous Galerkin finite element scheme both for space and angle. The scheme was found to be highly effective on isotropically and anisotropically refined angular meshes. The purpose of this paper is to extend the method to non-Fokker-Planck models describing the forward scatter by general Legendre expansions. As smoother the …

We expand the applicabilities and capabilities of an already existing space-time parallel method based on a block Jacobi smoother. First we formulate a more detailed criterion for spatial coarsening, which enables the method to deal with unstructured meshes and varying material parameters. Further we investigate the application to the eddy-current equation, where the non-trivial kernel of the curl operator causes severe problems. This is remedied with a new nodal auxiliary space correction. We proceed to identify convergence rates by local Fourier analysis and numerical experiments. Finally, w…
This work deals with the efficient numerical solution of the time-fractional heat equation discretized on non-uniform temporal meshes. Non-uniform grids are essential to capture the singularities of "typical" solutions of time-fractional problems. We propose an efficient space-time multigrid method based on the waveform relaxation technique, which accounts for the nonlocal character of the fractional differential operator. To maintain an optimal complexity, which can be obtained for the case of uniform grids, we approximate the coefficient matrix corresponding to the temporal discretization by…

We propose a high-order discontinuous Galerkin scheme for nonlinear acoustic waves on polytopic meshes. To model sound propagation with and without losses, we use Westervelt's nonlinear wave equation with and without strong damping. Challenges in the numerical analysis lie in handling the nonlinearity in the model, which involves the derivatives in time of the acoustic velocity potential, and in preventing the equation from degenerating. We rely in our approach on the Banach fixed-point theorem combined with a stability and convergence analysis of a linear wave equation with a variable coeffic…
The Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes (CHNS) system provides a computationally tractable model that can be used to effectively capture interfacial dynamics in two-phase fluid flows. In this work, we present a semi-implicit, projection-based finite element framework for solving the CHNS system. We use a projection-based semi-implicit time discretization for the Navier-Stokes equation and a fully-implicit time discretization for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We use a conforming continuous Galerkin (cG) finite element method in space equipped with a residual-based variational multiscale (RBVMS) formulati…
