In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utilize the Uzawa method for solving the saddle point system and propose preconditioning strategies for primal and dual systems.
For the dual systems, we review and compare the preconditioning strategies that are developed for FETI and SIMPLE methods. While for the primal system, we employ a tailored multigrid method specifically developed for the unfitted meshes. Lastly, the comparison between the proposed preconditioners is made through several numerical experiments.
Internal interfaces in a domain could exist as a material defect or they can appear due to propagations of cracks. Discretization of such geometries and solution of the contact problem on the internal interfaces can be computationally challenging. We employ an unfitted Finite Element (FE) framework for the discretization of the domains and develop a tailored, globally convergent, and efficient multigrid method for solving contact problems on the internal interfaces. In the unfitted FE methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space has to be modified…
In this work, we propose a multigrid preconditioner for Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) methods. Our multigrid method does not require knowledge of the Jacobian at any level of the multigrid hierarchy. As it is common in standard multigrid methods, the proposed method also relies on three building blocks: transfer operators, smoothers, and a coarse level solver. In addition to the restriction and prolongation operator, we also use a projection operator to transfer the current Newton iterate to a coarser level. The three-level Chebyshev semi-iterative method is employed as a smoother, as it …
Topology optimization for large scale problems continues to be a computational challenge. Several works exist in the literature to address this topic, and all make use of iterative solvers to handle the linear system arising from the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). However, the preconditioners used in these works vary, and in many cases are notably suboptimal. A handful of works have already demonstrated the effectiveness of Geometric Multigrid (GMG) preconditioners in topology optimization. Here, we show that Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) preconditioners offer superior robustness with only a small…

In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…

We construct an algebraic multigrid (AMG) based preconditioner for the reduced Hessian of a linear-quadratic optimization problem constrained by an elliptic partial differential equation. While the preconditioner generalizes a geometric multigrid preconditioner introduced in earlier works, its construction relies entirely on a standard AMG infrastructure built for solving the forward elliptic equation, thus allowing for it to be implemented using a variety of AMG methods and standard packages. Our analysis establishes a clear connection between the quality of the preconditioner and the AMG met…
In a previous paper (Lathouwers and Perkó, 2019) we have developed an efficient angular multigrid preconditioner for the Boltzmann transport equation with forward-peaked scatter modeled by the Fokker-Planck approximation. The discretization was based on a completely discontinuous Galerkin finite element scheme both for space and angle. The scheme was found to be highly effective on isotropically and anisotropically refined angular meshes. The purpose of this paper is to extend the method to non-Fokker-Planck models describing the forward scatter by general Legendre expansions. As smoother the …
In this paper we consider a class of unfitted finite element methods for scalar elliptic problems. These so-called CutFEM methods use standard finite element spaces on a fixed unfitted triangulation combined with the Nitsche technique and a ghost penalty stabilization. As a model problem we consider the application of such a method to the Poisson interface problem. We introduce and analyze a new class of preconditioners that is based on a subspace decomposition approach. The unfitted finite element space is split into two subspaces, where one subspace is the standard finite element space assoc…
The paper focuses on developing and studying efficient block preconditioners based on classical algebraic multigrid for the large-scale sparse linear systems arising from the fully coupled and implicitly cell-centered finite volume discretization of multi-group radiation diffusion equations, whose coefficient matrices can be rearranged into the $(G+2)\times(G+2)$ block form, where $G$ is the number of energy groups. The preconditioning techniques are based on the monolithic classical algebraic multigrid method, physical-variable based coarsening two-level algorithm and two types of block Schur…
Multiphase flow is a critical process in a wide range of applications, including carbon sequestration, contaminant remediation, and groundwater management. Typically, this process is modeled by a nonlinear system of partial differential equations derived by considering the mass conservation of each phase (e.g., oil, water), along with constitutive laws for the relationship of phase velocity to phase pressure. In this study, we develop and study efficient solution algorithms for solving the algebraic systems of equations derived from a fully coupled and time-implicit treatment of models of mult…
We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…
In recent years, solvers for finite-element discretizations of linear or linearized saddle-point problems, like the Stokes and Oseen equations, have become well established. There are two main classes of preconditioners for such systems: those based on block-factorization approach and those based on monolithic multigrid. Both classes of preconditioners have several critical choices to be made in their composition, such as the selection of a suitable relaxation scheme for monolithic multigrid. From existing studies, some insight can be gained as to what options are preferable in low-performance…
We present a monolithic geometric multigrid preconditioner for solving fluid-solid interaction problems in Stokes limit. The problems are discretized by a spatially adaptive high-order meshless method, the generalized moving least squares (GMLS) with adaptive $h$-refinement. In Stokes limit, solid kinematics can be dominated by the singularities governing the lubrication effects. Resolving those singularities with adaptive $h$-refinement can lead to an ill-conditioned linear system of equations. For constructing the interpolation and restriction operators - the key ingredients of the multigrid…
Advanced finite-element discretizations and preconditioners for models of poroelasticity have attracted significant attention in recent years. The equations of poroelasticity offer significant challenges in both areas, due to the potentially strong coupling between unknowns in the system, saddle-point structure, and the need to account for wide ranges of parameter values, including limiting behavior such as incompressible elasticity. This paper was motivated by an attempt to develop monolithic multigrid preconditioners for the discretization developed in [48]; we show here why this is a diffic…
Efficient and suitably preconditioned iterative solvers for elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) of the convection-diffusion type are used in all fields of science and engineering. To achieve optimal performance, solvers have to exhibit high arithmetic intensity and need to exploit every form of parallelism available in modern manycore CPUs. The computationally most expensive components of the solver are the repeated applications of the linear operator and the preconditioner. For discretisations based on higher-order Discontinuous Galerkin methods, sum-factorisation results in a dram…
We propose an adaptive multigrid preconditioning technology for solving linear systems arising from Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretizations. Unlike standard multigrid techniques, this preconditioner involves only trace spaces defined on the mesh skeleton, and it is suitable for adaptive hp-meshes. The key point of the construction is the integration of the iterative solver with a fully automatic and reliable mesh refinement process provided by the DPG technology. The efficacy of the solution technique is showcased with numerous examples of linear acoustics and electromagnetic simul…
Solving the indefinite Helmholtz equation is not only crucial for the understanding of many physical phenomena but also represents an outstandingly-difficult benchmark problem for the successful application of numerical methods. Here we introduce a new approach for evolving efficient preconditioned iterative solvers for Helmholtz problems with multi-objective grammar-guided genetic programming. Our approach is based on a novel context-free grammar, which enables the construction of multigrid preconditioners that employ a tailored sequence of operations on each discretization level. To find sol…
This paper describes a massively parallel algebraic multigrid method based on non-smoothed aggregation. It is especially suited for solving heterogeneous elliptic problems as it uses a greedy heuristic algorithm for the aggregation that detects changes in the coefficients and prevents aggregation across them. Using decoupled aggregation on each process with data agglomeration onto fewer processes on the coarse level, it weakly scales well in terms of both total time to solution and time per iteration to nearly 300,000 cores. Because of simple piecewise constant interpolation between the levels…
In this paper, we present a data-driven approach to iteratively solve the discrete heterogeneous Helmholtz equation at high wavenumbers. In our approach, we combine classical iterative solvers with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to form a preconditioner which is applied within a Krylov solver. For the preconditioner, we use a CNN of type U-Net that operates in conjunction with multigrid ingredients. Two types of preconditioners are proposed 1) U-Net as a coarse grid solver, and 2) U-Net as a deflation operator with shifted Laplacian V-cycles. Following our training scheme and data-augmen…
Three complementary methods have been implemented in the code Denovo that accelerate neutral particle transport calculations with methods that use leadership-class computers fully and effectively: a multigroup block (MG) Krylov solver, a Rayleigh quotient iteration (RQI) eigenvalue solver, and a multigrid in energy preconditioner. The multigroup Krylov solver converges more quickly than Gauss Seidel and enables energy decomposition such that Denovo can scale to hundreds of thousands of cores. The new multigrid in energy preconditioner reduces iteration count for many problem types and takes ad…
Most research on preconditioners for time-dependent PDEs has focused on implicit multi-step or diagonally-implicit multi-stage temporal discretizations. In this paper, we consider monolithic multigrid preconditioners for fully-implicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration methods. These temporal discretizations have very attractive accuracy and stability properties, but they couple the spatial degrees of freedom across multiple time levels, requiring the solution of very large linear systems. We extend the classical Vanka relaxation scheme to implicit RK discretizations of saddle poin…
Within the framework of $ p $-adaptive flux reconstruction, we aim to construct efficient polynomial multigrid ($p$MG) preconditioners for implicit time integration of the Navier--Stokes equations using Jacobian-free Newton--Krylov (JFNK) methods. We hypothesise that in pseudo transient continuation (PTC), as the residual drops, the frequency of error modes that dictates the convergence rate gets higher and higher. We apply nonlinear $p$MG solvers to stiff steady problems at low Mach number ($\mathrm{Ma}=10^{-3}$) to verify our hypothesis. It is demonstrated that once the residual drops by a f…
Unfitted finite element methods have emerged as a popular alternative to classical finite element methods for the solution of partial differential equations and allow modeling arbitrary geometries without the need for a boundary-conforming mesh. On the other hand, the efficient solution of the resultant system is a challenging task because of the numerical ill-conditioning that typically entails from the formulation of such methods. We use an adaptive geometric multigrid solver for the solution of the mixed finite cell formulation of saddle-point problems and investigate its convergence in the…
