The first order condition of the constrained minimization problem leads to a saddle point problem. A multigrid method using a multiplicative Schwarz smoother for saddle point problems can thus be interpreted as a successive subspace optimization method based on a multilevel decomposition of the constraint space. Convergence theory is developed for successive subspace optimization methods based on two assumptions on the space decomposition: stable decomposition and strengthened Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, and successfully applied to the saddle point systems arising from mixed finite element methods for Poisson and Stokes equations. Uniform convergence is obtained without the full regularity assumption of the underlying partial differential equations. As a byproduct, a V-cycle multigrid method for non-conforming finite elements is developed and proved to be uniform convergent with even one smoothing step.
Saddle point problems arise in a variety of applications, e.g., when solving the Stokes equations. They can be formulated such that the system matrix is symmetric, but indefinite, so the variational convergence theory that is usually used to prove multigrid convergence cannot be applied. In a 2016 paper in Numerische Mathematik Notay has presented a different algebraic approach that analyzes properly preconditioned saddle point problems, proving convergence of the Two-Grid method. In the present paper we analyze saddle point problems where the blocks are circulant within this framework. We are…
In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utili…
In recent years, solvers for finite-element discretizations of linear or linearized saddle-point problems, like the Stokes and Oseen equations, have become well established. There are two main classes of preconditioners for such systems: those based on block-factorization approach and those based on monolithic multigrid. Both classes of preconditioners have several critical choices to be made in their composition, such as the selection of a suitable relaxation scheme for monolithic multigrid. From existing studies, some insight can be gained as to what options are preferable in low-performance…
Large linear systems of saddle-point type have arisen in a wide variety of applications throughout computational science and engineering. The discretizations of distributed control problems have a saddle-point structure. The numerical solution of saddle-point problems has attracted considerable interest in recent years. In this work, we propose a novel Braess-Sarazin multigrid relaxation scheme for finite element discretizations of the distributed control problems, where we use the stiffness matrix obtained from the five-point finite difference method for the Laplacian to approximate the inver…
The dual formulation for linear elasticity, in contrast to the primal formulation, is not affected by locking, as it is based on the stresses as main unknowns. Thus it is quite attractive for nearly incompressible and incompressible materials. Discretization with mixed finite elements will lead to -- possibly large -- linear saddle point systems with a particular structure. Whereas efficient multigrid methods exist for solving problems in mixed plane elasticity, to the knowledge of the authors, no multigrid methods are readily available for the general dual formulation. Two are the main challe…

The solution of saddle-point problems, such as the Stokes equations, is a challenging task, especially in large-scale problems. Multigrid methods are one of the most efficient solvers for such systems of equations and can achieve convergence rates independent of the problem size. The smoother is a crucial component of multigrid methods and significantly affects its overall efficiency. We propose a Vanka-type smoother that we refer to as Restricted Additive Vanka and investigate its convergence in the context of adaptive geometric multigrid methods for the Stokes equations. The proposed smoothe…
Unfitted finite element methods have emerged as a popular alternative to classical finite element methods for the solution of partial differential equations and allow modeling arbitrary geometries without the need for a boundary-conforming mesh. On the other hand, the efficient solution of the resultant system is a challenging task because of the numerical ill-conditioning that typically entails from the formulation of such methods. We use an adaptive geometric multigrid solver for the solution of the mixed finite cell formulation of saddle-point problems and investigate its convergence in the…
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…
Effective relaxation methods are necessary for good multigrid convergence. For many equations, standard Jacobi and Gauß-Seidel are inadequate, and more sophisticated space decompositions are required; examples include problems with semidefinite terms or saddle point structure. In this paper we present a unifying software abstraction, PCPATCH, for the topological construction of space decompositions for multigrid relaxation methods. Space decompositions are specified by collecting topological entities in a mesh (such as all vertices or faces) and applying a construction rule (such as taking all…
We model incompressible flows with an adaptive stabilized finite element method Stokes flows, which solves a discretely stable saddle-point problem to approximate the velocity-pressure pair. Additionally, this saddle-point problem delivers a robust error estimator to guide mesh adaptivity. We analyze the accuracy of different discrete velocity-pressure pairs of continuous finite element spaces, which do not necessarily satisfy the discrete inf-sup condition. We validate the framework's performance with numerical examples.
We present a scalability study of Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization for the parallel iterative solution of symmetric indefinite linear systems with a 2x2 block structure. The algorithms have been implemented within the parallel numerical library PETSc. Since a nested inner-outer iteration strategy may be necessary, we investigate different choices for the inner solvers, including parallel sparse direct and multigrid accelerated iterative methods. We show the strong and weak scalability of the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization based iterative method when applied to a two-dimensional Poiseuille flow and…
We propose a goal-oriented mesh-adaptive algorithm for a finite element method stabilized via residual minimization on dual discontinuous-Galerkin norms. By solving a saddle-point problem, this residual minimization delivers a stable continuous approximation to the solution on each mesh instance and a residual projection onto a broken polynomial space, which is a robust error estimator to minimize the discrete energy norm via automatic mesh refinement. In this work, we propose and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm for this stable residual minimization. We solve the primal and adjoint …
Internal interfaces in a domain could exist as a material defect or they can appear due to propagations of cracks. Discretization of such geometries and solution of the contact problem on the internal interfaces can be computationally challenging. We employ an unfitted Finite Element (FE) framework for the discretization of the domains and develop a tailored, globally convergent, and efficient multigrid method for solving contact problems on the internal interfaces. In the unfitted FE methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space has to be modified…

In this paper, we consider a primal-dual domain decomposition method for total variation regularized problems appearing in mathematical image processing. The model problem is transformed into an equivalent constrained minimization problem by tearing-and-interconnecting domain decomposition. Then, the continuity constraints on the subdomain interfaces are treated by introducing Lagrange multipliers. The resulting saddle point problem is solved by the first order primal-dual algorithm. We apply the proposed method to image denoising, inpainting, and segmentation problems with either $L^2$-fideli…
We design and analyze a new adaptive stabilized finite element method. We construct a discrete approximation of the solution in a continuous trial space by minimizing the residual measured in a dual norm of a discontinuous test space that has inf-sup stability. We formulate this residual minimization as a stable saddle-point problem which delivers a stabilized discrete solution and a residual representation that drives the adaptive mesh refinement. Numerical results on an advection-reaction model problem show competitive error reduction rates when compared to discontinuous Galerkin methods on …
Saddle points play important roles as the transition states of activated process in gradient system driven by energy functional. However, for the same energy functional, the saddle points, as well as other stationary points, are different in different metrics such as the $L^2$ metric and the $H^{-1}$ metric. The saddle point calculation in $H^{-1}$ metric is more challenging with much higher computational cost since it involves higher order derivative in space and the inner product calculation needs to solve another Possion equation to get the $Δ^{-1}$ operator. In this paper, we introduce the…
In this paper we propose a primal-dual dynamical approach to the minimization of a structured convex function consisting of a smooth term, a nonsmooth term, and the composition of another nonsmooth term with a linear continuous operator. In this scope we introduce a dynamical system for which we prove that its trajectories asymptotically converge to a saddle point of the Lagrangian of the underlying convex minimization problem as time tends to infinity. In addition, we provide rates for both the violation of the feasibility condition by the ergodic trajectories and the convergence of the objec…
