A surface in a Riemannian space is called of constant astigmatism if the difference between the principal radii of curvatures at each point is a constant function. In this paper we give a classification of all rotational surfaces of constant astigmatism in space forms. We also prove that the generating curves of such surfaces are critical points of a variational problem for a curvature energy. Using the description of these curves, we locally construct all rotational surfaces of constant astigmatism as the associated binormal evolution surfaces from the generating curves.
By using Bäcklund transformation for the sine-Gordon equation, new periodic exact solutions of the constant astigmatism equation $ z_{yy} + ({1}/{z})_{xx} + 2 = 0 $ are generated from a seed which corresponds to Lipschitz surfaces of constant astigmatism.
We introduce an algebraic formula producing infinitely many exact solutions of the constant astigmatism equation $ z_{yy} + ({1}/{z})_{xx} + 2 = 0 $ from a given seed. A construction of corresponding surfaces of constant astigmatism is then a matter of routine. As a special case, we consider multisoliton solutions of the constant astigmatism equation defined as counterparts of famous multisoliton solutions of the sine-Gordon equation. A few particular examples are surveyed as well.
In this paper we continue investigation of the constant astigmatism equation z_{yy} + (1/z)_{xx} + 2 = 0. We newly interpret its solutions as describing spherical orthogonal equiareal patterns, with relevance to two-dimensional plasticity. We show how the classical Bianchi superposition principle for the sine-Gordon equation can be extended to generate an arbitrary number of solutions of the constant astigmatism equation by algebraic manipulations. As a by-product, we show that sine-Gordon solutions give slip line fields on the sphere. Finally, we compute the solutions corresponding to classic…
We introduce a nonlocal transformation to generate exact solutions of the constant astigmatism equation $z_{yy} + (1/z)_{xx} + 2 = 0$. The transformation is related to the special case of the famous Bäcklund transformation of the sine-Gordon equation with the Bäcklund parameter $λ= \pm1$. It is also a nonlocal symmetry.
The techniques used in this paper are based on the exterior calculus of Maurer-Cartan forms, and Weingarten surfaces are used to illustrate the methods that apply to quadratic exterior equations with constant coefficients. Isothermic {\it surfaces of constant astigmatism} (non-linear Weingarten surfaces whose difference of principal curvatures is a constant) are shown to represent dual surfaces of isothermic surfaces which satisfy the relation $H + αK = 0$.
In the 1950's Hopf gave examples of non-round convex 2-spheres in Euclidean 3-space with rotational symmetry that satisfy a linear relationship between their principal curvatures. In this paper we investigate conditions under which evolving a smooth rotationally symmetric sphere by a linear combination of its radii of curvature yields a Hopf sphere. When the coefficients of the flow have certain integer values, the fate of an initial sphere is entirely determined by the local geometry of its isolated umbilic points. A surprising variety of behaviours is uncovered: convergence to round spheres …
We study rotational hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature. We solve the ODE for the generating curves of such hypersurfaces and analyze several geometric properties of such hypersurfaces. In particular, we discover a class of non-compact rotational hypersurfaces with constant and negative Gauss-Kronecker curvature and finite volume, which can be seen as the higher-dimensional generalization of the pseudo-sphere. Finally we investigate other types of rotational hypersurfaces with similar curvature constraints, including those with prescribed Gauss-Kronecker curvature.
In this paper, we classify the rotational surfaces with constant skew curvature in $3$-space forms. We also give a variational characterization of the profile curves of these surfaces as critical points of a curvature energy involving the exponential of the curvature of the curve. Finally, we provide a converse process to produce all rotational surfaces with constant skew curvature based on the evolution of a critical curve under the flow of its binormal vector field with prescribed velocity.
We give a full classification of complete rotationally invariant surfaces with constant Gauss curvature in Berger spheres: they are either Clifford tori, which are flat, or spheres of Gauss curvature $K \geq K_0$ for a positive constant $K_0$, which we determine explicitly and depends on the geometry of the ambient Berger sphere. For values of $K_0 \leq K \leq K_P$, for a specific constant $K_P$, it was not known until now whether complete constant Gauss curvature $K$ surfaces existed in Berger spheres, so our classification provides the first examples. For $K > K_P$, we prove that the rotatio…
We give the classification of constant mean curvature rotational surfaces of elliptic, hyperbolic, and parabolic type in the four-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space with neutral metric.
If a piece of the contour of a picture is missing to the eye vision, then the brain tends to complete it using some kind of sub-Riemannian geodesics of the unit tangent bundle of the plane, R2xS1. These geodesics can be obtained by lifting extremal curves of a total curvature type energy in the plane. We completely solve this variational problem, geometrically. Moreover, we also show a way of constructing rotational surfaces of constant negative curvature in R3 by evolving these extremal curves under their associated binormal flow with prescribed velocity. Finally, we prove that, locally, all …
We flow a hypersurface in Euclidean space by mean curvature flow with a Neumann boundary condition, where the boundary manifold is any torus of revolution. If we impose the conditions that the initial manifold is compatible and does not contain the rotational vector field in its tangent space, then mean curvature flow exists for all time and converges to a flat cross-section as $t \rightarrow \infty$.
We classify constant mean curvature surfaces invariant by a 1-parameter group of isometries in the Berger spheres and in the special linear group Sl(2, R). In particular, all constant mean curvature spheres in those spaces are described explicitly, proving that they are not always embedded. Besides new examples of Delaunay-type surfaces are obtained. Finally the relation between the area and volume of these spheres in the Berger spheres is studied, showing that, in some cases, they are not solution to the isoperimetric problem.
We study rotational surfaces in Euclidean 3-space whose Gauss curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. By means of a phase plane analysis and under mild assumptions on the prescribed function, we generalize the classification of rotational surfaces of constant Gauss curvature; exhibit examples that cannot exist in the constant Gauss curvature case; and analyze the asymptotic behavior of strictly convex graphs. We also prove the existence of singular radial solutions intersecting orthogonally the axis of rotation.
We study surfaces of constant mean curvature which are invariant by oneparameter group of either rotational isometries or parabolic isometries, immersed into the homogeneous manifold PSL2(R,tau). Also, we give some applications.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of all rotational linear Weingarten surface into the Euclidean sphere S3. These surfaces are characterized by a linear relation aH+bK=c, where H and K stand for their mean and Gaussian curvatures, respectively, whereas a; b and c are real constants.
We obtain an infinite family of complete non embedded rotational surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ whose second fundamental forms have length equal to one at any point. Also we prove that a complete rotational surface with second fundamental form of constant length is either a round sphere, a circular cylinder or, up to a homothety and a rigid motion, a member of that family. In particular, the round sphere and the circular cylinder are the only complete embedded rotational surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ with second fundamental form of constant length.
Second order partial differential equations which describe spherical surfaces (ss) or pseudospherical surfaces (pss) are considered. These equations are equivalent to the structure equations of a metric with Gaussian curvature $K = 1$ or $K = -1$, respectively, and they can be seen as the compatibility condition of an associated su(2)-valued or sl(2, R)-valued linear problem, also referred to as a zero curvature representation. Under certain assumptions we give a complete and explicit classiffcation of equations of the form $z_{tt} = A(z, z_x , z_t) z_{xx} + B(z, z_x , z_t ) z_{xt} + C(z, z_x …
We study a class of Riemannian manifolds with respect to the covariant derivative of their curvature tensors. We introduce geometrically the class of directed Riemannian manifolds of pointwise constant relative sectional curvature and give a tensor characterization for such manifolds. We prove that all rotational hypersurfaces are directed and find the rotational hypersurfaces of pointwise constant relative sectional curvature. For the class of directed Riemannian manifolds of pointwise constant relative sectional curvature having a totally umbilical scalar distribution we prove a structural t…
Weingarten surfaces are those whose principal curvatures satisfy a functional relation, whose set of solutions is called the curvature diagram or the W-diagram of the surface. Making use of the notion of geometric linear momentum of a plane curve, we propose a new approach to the study of rotational Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean 3-space. Our contribution consists of reducing any type of Weingarten condition on a rotational surface to a first order differential equation on the momentum of the generatrix curve. In this line, we provide two new classification results involving a cubic and an h…
We study rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski Gaussian curvature and rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski mean curvature in a $3$-dimensional normed space with rotationally symmetric norm. We have a generalization of the catenoid, pseudo-sphere and Delaunay surfaces.
We study hypersurfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{n+1}_s$, which write as a warped product of a $1$-dimensional base with an $(n-1)$-manifold of constant sectional curvature. We show that either they have constant sectional curvature or they are contained in a rotational hypersurface. Therefore, we first define rotational hypersurfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space.
In this article, we study spacelike and timelike rotational surfaces in a 3--dimensional de Sitter space $\mathbb{S}^3_1$ which are the orbit of a regular curve under the action of the orthogonal transformation of 4--dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ leaving a spacelike, a timelike or a degenerate plane pointwise fixed. We determine the profile curve of such Weingarten rotational surfaces parameterized by the principal curvature. Then, we classify spacelike and timelike Weingarten rotational surface in $\mathbb{S}^3_1$ with the principal curvatures $κ$ and $λ$ satisfying $κ=aλ+b$ or…
We prove that any piece of a rotational hypersurface with prescribed mean curvature function in a Euclidean space can be uniquely extended infinitely, which generalizes the results by Euler and Delaunay for surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvautre. Next, we prove the same kind of theorem for generalized rotational hypersurfaces of O(l+1) x O(m+1)-type. The key lemmas in this paper show the existence of solutions for singular initial value problems which arise from the analysis of ordinary differential equations of generating curves of those hypersurfaces.
We study constant mean curvature 1/2 surfaces in H2xR that admit a compactification of the mean curvature operator. We show that a particular family of complete entire graphs over H2 admits a structure of infinite dimensional manifold with local control on the behaviors at infinity. These graphs also appear to have a half-space property and we deduce a uniqueness result at infinity. Deforming non degenerate constant mean curvature 1/2 annuli, we provide a large class of (non rotational) examples and construct (possibly embedded) annuli without axis, i.e. with two vertical, asymptotically rotat…
We consider surfaces in Euclidean space parametrized on an annular domain such that the first fundamental form and the principal curvatures are rotationally invariant, and the principal curvature directions only depend on the angle of rotation (but not the radius). Such surfaces generalize the Enneper surface. We show that they are necessarily of constant mean curvature, and that the rotational speed of the principal curvature directions is constant. We classify the minimal case. The (non-zero) constant mean curvature case has been classified by Smyth.
We classify all rotational surfaces in Euclidean space whose principal curvatures $κ_1$ and $κ_2$ satisfy the linear relation $κ_1=aκ_2+b$, where $a$ and $b$ are two constants. We give a variational characterization of these surfaces in terms of its generating curve. As a consequence of our classification, we find closed (embedded and not embedded) surfaces and periodic (embedded and not embedded) surfaces with a geometric behaviour similar to Delaunay surfaces.
We show that a compact embedded minimal or constant mean curvature annulus with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature which is tangent to two spheres of same radius or tangent to a sphere and meeting a plane in constant contact angle is rotational.
We prove that every Kaehler metric, whose potential is a function of the time-like distance in the flat Kaehler-Lorentz space, is of quasi-constant holomorphic sectional curvatures, satisfying certain conditions. This gives a local classification of the Kaehler manifolds with the above mentioned metrics. New examples of Sasakian space forms are obtained as real hypersurfaces of a Kaehler space form with special invariant distribution. We introduce three types of even dimensional rotational hypersurfaces in flat spaces and endow them with locally conformal Kaehler structures. We prove that thes…
Very recently Ben Andrews and Haizhong Li showed that every embedded cmc torus in the three dimensional sphere is axially symmetric. There is a two-parametric family of axially symmetric cmc surfaces; more precisely, for every real number H and every C > 2 (H+\sqrt{1+H^2}) there is an axially symmetry surface Σ_{H,C} with mean curvature H. In 2010, Perdomo showed that for every H between cot(π/m) and (m^2-2)/(2(m^2-1)^1/2), there exists an embedded axially symmetric example with non constant principal curvatures that is invariant under the ciclic group Z_m. Andrews and Li, showed that these ex…
We show that one-sided Alexandrov embedded constant mean curvature cylinders of finite type in the 3-sphere are surfaces of revolution. This confirms a conjecture by Pinkall and Sterling that the only embedded constant mean curvature tori in the 3-sphere are rotational.
In this paper, we prove that minimal hypersurfaces when $n\geq 3$ and nonzero constant mean curvature hypersurfaces when $n\geq2$ foliated by spheres in parallel horizontal hyperplanes in ${\mathbb{H}}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ must be rotationally symmetric.
In this paper we study sets in the $n$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\hhn$ which are critical points, under a volume constraint, of the sub-Riemannian perimeter associated to the distribution of horizontal vector fields in $\hhn$. We define a notion of mean curvature for hypersurfaces and we show that the boundary of a stationary set is a constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurface. Our definition coincides with previous ones. Our main result describes which are the CMC hypersurfaces of revolution in $\hhn$. The fact that such a hypersurface is invariant under a compact group of rotations allow…
We obtain a classification result for rotational surfaces in the Heisenberg space and the universal cover of the special linear group, whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We show that these surfaces behave like the Delaunay surfaces of constant mean curvature, under some assumptions on the prescribed function. In contrast with the constant mean curvature case, we exhibit the existence of rotational, embedded tori, providing counterexamples of the Alexandrov problem for this class of immersed surfaces.
In an ambient space with rotational symmetry around an axis (which include the Hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces), we study the evolution under the volume-preserving mean curvature flow of a revolution hypersurface M generated by a graph over the axis of revolution and with boundary in two totally geodesic hypersurfaces (tgh for short). Requiring that, for each time t, the evolving hypersurface M_t meets such tgh ortogonally, we prove that: a) the flow exists while M_t does not touch the axis of rotation; b) throughout the time interval of existence, b1) the generating curve of M_t remains a gra…
We classify compact conformally flat $n$-dimensional manifolds with constant positive scalar curvature and satisfying an optimal integral pinching condition: they are covered isometrically by either $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with the round metric, $\mathbb{S}^{1}\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ with the product metric or $\mathbb{S}^{1}\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ with a rotationally symmetric Derdziński metric.
We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.
We study stable constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces $Σ$ in slabs in a product space $M\times\r,$ where $M$ is an orientable Riemannian manifold. We obtain a characterization of stable cylinders and prove that if $Σ$ is not a cylinder then it is locally a vertical graph. Moreover, in case $M$ is $\h^n,\r^n$ or $\s_+^n$ and each of its boundary components is embedded then $Σ$ is rotationally invariant. When $M$ has dimension 2 and Gaussian curvature bounded from below by a positive constant $κ,$ we prove there is no stable CMC with free boundary connecting the boundary components of a sl…
We use a phase space analysis to give some classification results for rotational hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. For the case where the prescribed function is an even function in $\mathbb{S}^n$, we show that a Delaunay-type classification holds for this class of hypersurfaces. We also exhibit examples showing that the behavior of rotational hypersurfaces of prescribed (non-constant) mean curvature is much richer than in the constant mean curvature case.
Let $M$ be a simply connected homogeneous three-manifold with isometry group of dimension $4$, and let $Σ$ be any compact surface of genus zero immersed in $M$ whose mean, extrinsic and Gauss curvatures satisfy a smooth elliptic relation $Φ(H,K_e,K)=0$. In this paper we prove that $Σ$ is a sphere of revolution, provided that the unique inextendible rotational surface $S$ in $M$ that satisfies this equation and touches its rotation axis orthogonally has bounded second fundamental form. In particular, we prove that: (i) any elliptic Weingarten sphere immersed in $\mathbb{H}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ i…
We prove an existence result for non rotational constant mean curvature ends in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$, where $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the hyperbolic real plane. The value of the curvature is $h \, \in \, (0, 1/2)$. We use Schauder theory and a continuity method for solution of the prescribed mean curvature equation of exterior domains of $\mathbb{H}^2$. We also prove a fine property of the asymptotic behavior of the rotational ends introduced by Sa Earp and Toubiana.
