We present a quantitative estimate for the radially symmetric configuration concerning a Serrin-type overdetermined problem for the torsional rigidity in a bounded domain $Ω$, when the equation is known on $Ω\setminus \overlineω$ only, for some open subset $ω\Subset Ω$. The problem has concrete motivations in optimal heating with malfunctioning, laminar flows and beams with small inhomogeneities.
We consider the solution of the torsion problem $-Δu=1$ in $Ω$ and $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$. Serrin's celebrated symmetry theorem states that, if the normal derivative $u_ν$ is constant on $\partial Ω$, then $Ω$ must be a ball. In a recent paper, it has been conjectured that Serrin's theorem may be obtained {\it by stability} in the following way: first, for the solution $u$ of the torsion problem prove the estimate $$ r_e-r_i\leq C_t\,\Bigl(\max_{Γ_t} u-\min_{Γ_t} u\Bigr) $$ for some constant $C_t$ depending on $t$, where $r_e$ and $r_i$ are the radii of an annulus containing $\partialΩ$ and $Γ_…
We study Serrin's overdetermined boundary value problem \begin{equation*} -Δ_{S^N}\, u=1 \quad \text{ in $Ω$},\qquad u=0, \; \partial_ηu=\textrm{const} \quad \text{on $\partial Ω$} \end{equation*} in subdomains $Ω$ of the round unit sphere $S^N \subset \mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $Δ_{S^N}$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $S^N$. A subdomain $Ω$ of $S^N$ is called a Serrin domain if it admits a solution of this overdetermined problem. In our main result, we construct Serrin domains in $S^N$, $N \ge 2$ which bifurcate from symmetric straight tubular neighborhoods of the equator. Our result …
In a bounded domain $Ω$, we consider a positive solution of the problem $Δu+f(u)=0$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is a locally Lipschitz continuous function. Under sufficient conditions on $Ω$ (for instance, if $Ω$ is convex), we show that $\partialΩ$ is contained in a spherical annulus of radii $r_i<r_e$, where $r_e-r_i\leq C\,[u_ν]_{\partialΩ}^α$ for some constants $C>0$ and $α\in (0,1]$. Here, $[u_ν]_{\partialΩ}$ is the Lipschitz seminorm on $\partialΩ$ of the normal derivative of $u$. This result improves to Hölder stability the logarithmic estimate obtain…
Given an open bounded subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, which is convex and satisfies an interior sphere condition, we consider the pde $-Δ_{\infty} u = 1$ in $Ω$, subject to the homogeneous boundary condition $u = 0$ on $\partial Ω$. We prove that the unique solution to this Dirichlet problem is power-concave (precisely, 3/4 concave) and it is of class $C ^1(Ω)$. We then investigate the overdetermined Serrin-type problem obtained by adding the extra boundary condition $|\nabla u| = a$ on $\partial Ω$; by using a suitable $P$-function we prove that, if $Ω$ satisfies the same assumptions as above a…
In this paper, we consider the conditional regularity of weak solution to the 3D Navier--Stokes equations. More precisely, we prove that if one directional derivative of velocity, say $\partial_3 u,$ satisfies $\partial_3 u \in L^{p_0,1}(0,T; L^{q_0}(\mathbb{R}^3))$ with $\frac{2}{p_{0}}+\frac{3}{q_{0}}=2$ and $\frac{3}{2}<q_0< +\infty,$ then the weak solution is regular on $(0,T].$ The proof is based on the new local energy estimates introduced by Chae-Wolf (arXiv:1911.02699) and Wang-Wu-Zhang (arXiv:2005.11906).
We study the existence of nontrivial unbounded domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ such that the overdetermined problem $$ -Δu = 1 \quad \text{in $Ω$}, \qquad u=0, \quad \partial_νu=\textrm{const} \qquad \text{on $\partial Ω$} $$ admits a solution $u$. By this, we complement Serrin's classification result from 1971 which yields that every bounded domain admitting a solution of the above problem is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$. The domains we construct are periodic in some variables and radial in the other variables, and they bifurcate from a straight (generalized) cylinder or slab. We also show that the…
We construct nontrivial smooth bounded domains $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ of the form $Ω_0 \setminus \overlineΩ_1$, bifurcating from annuli, for which there exists a positive solution to the overdetermined boundary value problem \[ -Δu = 1, \; u>0 \quad \text{in } Ω, \qquad u = 0 ,\; \partial_νu = \text{const} \quad \text{on } \partialΩ_0, \qquad u = \text{const} ,\; \partial_νu = \text{const} \quad \text{on } \partial Ω_1, \] where $ν$ stands for the inner unit normal to $\partialΩ$. From results by Reichel and later by Sirakov, it was known that the condition $\partial_νu \leq 0$ on $\partial…
This paper concerns rigidity results to Serrin's overdetermined problem in an epigraph $$ \{\begin{aligned} &Δu+ f(u)=0,\ \ \ {in}\ Ω=\{(x^\prime,x_n): x_n>φ(x^\prime)\},\\ &u>0,\ \ \ {in}\ Ω,\\ &u=0,\ \ \ {on}\ \partialΩ,\\ &|\nabla u|=const. {on} \partialΩ. \end{aligned}. $$ We prove that up to isometry the epigraph must be an half space and that the solution $u$ must be one-dimensional, provided that one of the following assumptions are satisfied: either $n=2$; or $ φ$ is globally Lipschitz, or $n \leq 8$ and $ \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_n} >0$ in $Ω$. In view of the counterexample constr…
We study the quantitative stability of Serrin's symmetry problem and it's connection with a dynamic model for contact angle motion of quasi-static capillary drops. We prove a new stability result which is both linear and depends only on a weak norm \[ \big\||Du|^2- 1\big\|_{L^2(\partial Ω)}. \] This improvement is particularly important to us since the $L^2(\partial Ω)$ norm squared of $|Du|^2-1$ is exactly the energy dissipation rate of the associated dynamic model. Combining the energy estimate for the dynamic model with the new stability result for the equilibrium problem yields an exponent…
We prove a rigidity result for Serrin's overdetermined problem in a cone that is contained in a half-space in arbitrary dimensions. In the special case where the cone is an epigraph, this result was shown previously in low dimensions with a different approach.
It is well known that the Serrin condition is a necessary condition for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the prescribed mean curvature equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with certain regularity. In this paper we investigate the sharpness of the Serrin condition for the vertical mean curvature equation in the product $ M^n \times \mathbb{R} $. Precisely, given a $\mathscr{C}^2$ bounded domain $Ω$ in $M$ and a function $ H = H (x, z) $ continuous in $\overlineΩ\times\mathbb{R}$ and non-decreasing in the variable $z$, we prove that the strong Serrin condition $(n-1)\mathcal…
For all $N \geq 9$, we find smooth entire epigraphs in $\R^N$, namely smooth domains of the form $Ω: = \{x\in \R^N\ / \ x_N > F (x_1,\ldots, x_{N-1})\}$, which are not half-spaces and in which a problem of the form $Δu + f(u) = 0 $ in $Ω$ has a positive, bounded solution with 0 Dirichlet boundary data and constant Neumann boundary data on $\partial Ω$. This answers negatively for large dimensions a question by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg \cite{bcn2}. In 1971, Serrin \cite{serrin} proved that a bounded domain where such an overdetermined problem is solvable must be a ball, in analogy t…
Let $u$ denote a solution to a rotationally invariant Hessian equation $F(D^2u)=0$ on a bounded simply connected domain $Ω\subset R^2$, with constant Dirichlet and Neumann data on $\partial Ω$. In this paper we prove that if $u$ is real analytic and not identically zero, then $u$ is radial and $Ω$ is a disk. The fully nonlinear operator $F\not\equiv 0$ is of general type, and in particular, not assumed to be elliptic. We also show that the result is sharp, in the sense that it is not true if $Ω$ is not simply connected, or if $u$ is $C^{\infty}$ but not real analytic.
Several types of new regularity criteria for Leray-Hopf weak solutions $u$ to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. Some of them are based on the third component $u_3$ of velocity under Prodi-Serrin index condition, another type is in terms of $ω_3$ and $\partial_3u_3$ with Prodi-Serrin index condition. And a very recent work of the authors, based on only one of the nine entries of the gradient tensor, is renovated.
We extend the symmetry result of Serrin and Weinberger from the Laplacian operator to the highly degenerate game-theoretic $p$-Laplacian operator and show that viscosity solutions of $-Δ_p^Nu=1$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ and $\tfrac{\partial u}{\partialν}=-c\neq 0$ on $\partialΩ$ can only exist on a bounded domain $Ω$ if $Ω$ is a ball.
We consider the $p$-Laplacian equation $-Δ_p u=1$ for $1<p<2$, on a regular bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$, with $N\ge2$, under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the spirit of Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem and of Serrin's symmetry result for the overdetermined problems, we prove that if the mean curvature $H$ of $\partialΩ$ is constant, then $Ω$ is a ball and the unique solution of the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian problem is radial. The main tools used are integral identities, the $P$-function, and the maximum principle.
We consider a partially overdetermined problem in a sector-like domain $Ω$ in a cone $Σ$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, and prove a rigidity result of Serrin type by showing that the existence of a solution implies that $Ω$ is a spherical sector, under a convexity assumption on the cone. We also consider the related question of characterizing constant mean curvature compact surfaces $Γ$ with boundary which satisfy a "gluing" condition with respect to the cone $Σ$. We prove that if either the cone is convex or the surface is a radial graph then $Γ$ must be a spherical cap. Finally we show that, …
We investigate the Cauchy problem for a quasilinear equation with transport rough input of the form $\mathrm{d} u-\partial_i(a^{ij}(u)\partial_j u)\mathrm{d} t =\mathrm{d} \mathbf{X}_t^i(x)\partial_i u_t,$ $u_0\in L^2$ on the torus $\mathbb T^d$, where $\mathbf{X}$ is two-step enhancement of a family of coefficients $(X^i_t(x))_{i=1,\dots d}$, akin to a geometric rough path with Hölder regularity $α>1/3.$ Using energy estimates, we provide sufficient conditions that guarantee existence in any dimension, and uniqueness in the case when $X$ is divergence-free. We then focus on the one-dimensiona…
We prove that, if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open bounded starshaped domain of class $C^2$, the constancy over $\partial Ω$ of the function $$φ(y) = \int_0^{λ(y)} \prod_{j=1}^{n-1}[1-t κ_j(y)]\, dt$$ implies that $Ω$ is a ball. Here $k_j(y)$ and $λ(y)$ denote respectively the principal curvatures and the cut value of a boundary point $y \in \partial Ω$. We apply this geometric result to different symmetry questions for PDE's: an overdetermined system of Monge-Kantorovich type equations (which can be viewed as the limit as $p \to + \infty$ of Serrin's symmetry problem for the $p$-Laplacian),…
We give formulae that yield an information about the location of an unknown polygonal inclusion having unknown constant conductivity inside a known conductive material having known constant conductivity from a partial knowledge of the Neumann -to-Dirichlet operator.
The initial boundary-value problem (IBVP) and the Cauchy problem for the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation and other related $2m$th-order semilinear parabolic partial differential equations in one and N dimensions are considered. Global existence and blow-up as well as uniform bounds are reviewed by using: (i) classic tools of interpolation theory and Galerkin methods, (ii) eigenfunction and nonlinear capacity methods, (iii) Henry's version of weighted Gronwall's inequalities, and (vi) two types of scaling (blow-up) arguments. For the IBVPs, existence of global solutions is proved for both Dirich…
We prove nonexistence of nontrivial bounded solutions to some nonlinear problems involving nonlocal operators of the form \[Lu(x)=\sum a_{ij}\partial_{ij}u+{\rm PV}\int_{\R^n}(u(x)-u(x+y))K(y)dy.\] These operators are infinitesimal generators of symmetric Lévy processes. Our results apply to even kernels $K$ satisfying that $K(y)|y|^{n+σ}$ is nondecreasing along rays from the origin, for some $σ\in(0,2)$ in case $a_{ij}\equiv0$ and for $σ=2$ in case that $(a_{ij})$ is a positive definite symmetric matrix. Our nonexistence results concern Dirichlet problems for $L$ in star-shaped domains with c…
We show uniqueness for overdetermined elliptic problems defined on topological disks $Ω$ with $C^2$ boundary, i.e., positive solutions $u$ to $Δu + f(u)=0$ in $Ω\subset (M^2,g)$ so that $u = 0$ and $\frac{\partial u}{\partial \vecη} = cte $ along $\partial Ω$, $\vecη$ the unit outward normal along $\partialΩ$ under the assumption of the existence of a candidate family. To do so, we adapt the Gálvez-Mira generalized Hopf-type Theorem to the realm of overdetermined elliptic problem. When $(M^2,g)$ is the standard sphere $\mathbb S^2$ and $f$ is a $C^1$ function so that $f(x)>0$ and $f(x)\ge x \,…
This paper is devoted to the identification of the unknown smooth coefficient c entering the hyperbolic equation $c(x)\partial_{t}^{2}u - Δu = 0$ in a bounded smooth domain in $\R^{d}$ from partial (on part of the boundary) dynamic boundary measurements. In this paper we prove that the knowledge of the partial Cauchy data for this class of hyperbolic PDE on any open subset $Γ$ of the boundary determines explicitly the coefficient $c$ provided that $c$ is known outside a bounded domain. Then, through construction of appropriate test functions by a geometrical control method, we derive a formula…
We consider the multidimensional Borg-Levinson theorem of determining both the magnetic field $dA$ and the electric potential $V$, appearing in the Dirichlet realization of the magnetic Schrödinger operator $H=(-{\rm i}\nabla+A)^2+V$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$, from partial knowledge of the boundary spectral data of $H$. The full boundary spectral data are given by the set $\{(λ_{k},{\partial_νϕ_{k}}_{|\partialΩ}):\ k\geq1\}$, where $\{ λ_k:\ k\in \mathbb N^* \}$ is the non-decreasing sequence of eigenvalues of $H$, $\{ ϕ_k:\ k\in \mathbb N^* \}$ an associated Hilberti…
We consider a class of rigidity results in a convex cone $Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^N$. These include overdetermined Serrin-type problems for a mixed boundary value problem relative to $Σ$, Alexandrov's soap bubble-type results relative to $Σ$, and a Heintze-Karcher's inequality relative to $Σ$. Each rigidity result is obtained by means of a single integral identity and holds true under weak integral conditions. Optimal quantitative stability estimates are obtained in terms of an $L^2$-pseudodistance. In particular, the optimal stability estimate for Heintze-Karcher's inequality is new even in the…
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on an arbitrary open portion of the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, for a class of semilinear elliptic equations, determines the nonlinearity uniquely.
We study the inverse problem for determining the time-dependent matrix potential appearing in the wave equation. We prove the unique determination of potential from the knowledge of solution measured on a part of the boundary.
In this paper we show, in dimension n >=3, that knowledge of the Cauchy data for the Schroedinger equation in the presence of a magnetic potential, measured on possibly very small subsets of the boundary, determines uniquely the magnetic field and the electric potential.
We prove that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, measured on a part of the boundary of a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n, n\geq2$, can uniquely determine, in a nonlinear magnetic Schrödinger equation, the vector-valued magnetic potential and the scalar electric potential, both being nonlinear in the solution.
In this article we study stability aspects for the determination of time-dependent vector and scalar potentials in relativistic Schrödinger equation from partial knowledge of boundary measurements. For space dimensions strictly greater than 2 we obtain log-log stability estimates for the determination of vector potentials (modulo gauge equivalence) and log-log-log stability estimates for the determination of scalar potentials from partial boundary data assuming suitable a-priori bounds on these potentials.
We extend a global uniqueness result for the Calderón problem with partial data, due to Kenig-Sjöstrand-Uhlmann, to the case of less regular conductivities. Specifically, we show that in dimensions $n\ge 3$, the knowledge of the Diricihlet-to-Neumann map, measured on possibly very small subsets of the boundary, determines uniquely a conductivity having essentially $3/2$ derivatives in an $L^2$ sense.
