The affine quermassintegrals associated to a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are affine-invariant analogues of the classical intrinsic volumes from the Brunn-Minkowski theory, and thus constitute a central pillar of affine convex geometry. They were introduced in the 1980's by E. Lutwak, who conjectured that among all convex bodies of a given volume, the $k$-th affine quermassintegral is minimized precisely on the family of ellipsoids. The known cases $k=1$ and $k=n-1$ correspond to the classical Blaschke-Santaló and Petty projection inequalities, respectively. In this work we confirm Lutwak's conjecture, including characterization of the equality cases, for all values of $k=1,\ldots,n-1$, in a single unified framework. In fact, it turns out that ellipsoids are the only local minimizers with respect to the Hausdorff topology.
For the proof, we introduce a number of new ingredients, including a novel construction of the Projection Rolodex of a convex body. In particular, from this new view point, Petty's inequality is interpreted as an integrated form of a generalized Blaschke--Santaló inequality for a new family of polar bodies encoded by the Projection Rolodex. We extend these results to more general $L^p$-moment quermassintegrals, and interpret the case $p=0$ as a sharp averaged Loomis--Whitney isoperimetric inequality.
We use Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for quermassintegrals to deduce a family of inequalities of Poincaré type on the unit sphere and on the boundary of smooth convex bodies in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
In this paper, we first introduce a new concept of {\it dual quermassintegral sum function} of two star bodies and establish Minkowski's type inequality for dual quermassintegral sum of mixed intersection bodies, which is a general form of the Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies. Then, we give the Aleksandrov--Fenchel inequality and the Brunn--Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies and some related results. Our results present, for intersection bodies, all dual inequalities for Lutwak's mixed prosection bodies inequalities.
We extend to a functional setting the concept of quermassintegrals, well-known within the Minkowski theory of convex bodies. We work in the class of quasi-concave functions defined on the Euclidean space, and with the hierarchy of their subclasses given by $α$-concave functions. In this setting, we investigate the most relevant features of functional quermassintegrals, and we show they inherit the basic properties of their classical geometric counterpart. As a first main result, we prove a Steiner-type formula which holds true by choosing a suitable functional equivalent of the unit ball. Then…
We show a reverse isoperimetric inequality within the class of relative outer parallel bodies, with respect to a general convex body $E$, along with its equality condition. Based on the convexity of the sequence of quermassintegrals of Minkowski sums we also prove further inequalities.
We provide general estimates which compare the quermassintegrals of a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with the averages of the corresponding quermassintegrals of the $k$-codimensional sections of $K$ over $G_{n,n-k}$. An example is the inequality $$α_{n,k,j}\frac{W_j(K)}{|K|}\leq\int_{G_{n,n-k}}\frac{W_j(K\cap F)}{|K\cap F|}dν_{n,n-k}(F)\leq β_{n,k,j}\frac{W_j(K)}{|K|}$$ where the constants $α_{n,k,j}$ and $β_{n,k,j}$ depend only on $n,k$ and $j$, which holds true for any centrally symmetric convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ and any $0\leq j\leq n-k-1\leq n-1$. Using these estimates we obt…
In this paper, we introduce first the mixed affine quermassintegrals. The Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality for the mixed affine quermassintegrals is established. As an application, the Minkowski, Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for the mixed affine quermassintegrals are also derived.
We analyze aspects of the behavior of the family of inner parallel bodies of a convex body for the isoperimetric quotient and deficit of arbitrary quermassintegrals. By means of technical boundary properties of the so-called form body of a convex body and similar constructions for inner parallel bodies, we point out an erroneous use of a relation between the latter bodies in two different works. We correct these results, limiting them to convex bodies having a very precise boundary structure.
It is shown that every even, zonal measure on the Euclidean unit sphere gives rise to an isoperimetric inequality for sets of finite perimeter which directly implies the classical Euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The strongest member of this large family of inequalities is shown to be the only affine invariant one among them - the Petty projection inequality. As an application, a family of sharp Sobolev inequalities for functions of bounded variation is obtained, each of which is stronger than the classical Sobolev inequality. Moreover, corresponding families of Lp isoperimetric and Sobolev…
In this paper, we develop a basic theory of Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas for convex and $s$-concave functions. We prove some basic properties for these newly introduced functional affine invariants and establish related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities as well as functional Santaló type inequalities.
We prove new $L_p$ affine isoperimetric inequalities for all $ p \in [-\infty,1)$. We establish, for all $p\neq -n$, a duality formula which shows that $L_p$ affine surface area of a convex body $K$ equals $L_\frac{n^2}{p}$ affine surface area of the polar body $K^\circ$.
In this paper we prove an isoperimetric inequality of euclidean type for complete metric spaces admitting a cone-type inequality. These include all Banach spaces and all complete, simply-connected metric spaces of non-positive curvature in the sense of Alexandrov or, more generally, of Busemann. The main theorem generalizes results of Gromov and Ambrosio-Kirchheim.
The isoperimetric quotient of the whole family of inner and outer parallel bodies of a convex body is shown to be decreasing in the parameter of definition of parallel bodies, along with a characterization of those convex bodies for which that quotient happens to be constant on some interval within its domain. This is obtained relative to arbitrary gauge bodies, having the classical Euclidean setting as a particular case. Similar results are established for different families of Wulff shapes that are closely related to parallel bodies. These give rise to solutions of isoperimetric-type problem…
Lutwak's volume inequalities for polar projection bodies of all orders are generalized to polarizations of Minkowski valuations generated by even, zonal measures on the Euclidean unit sphere. This is based on analogues of mixed projection bodies for such Minkowski valuations and a generalization of the notion of centroid bodies. A new integral representation is used to single out Lutwak's inequalities as the strongest among these families of inequalities, which in turn are related to a conjecture on affine quermassintegrals. In the dual setting, a generalization of volume inequalities for inte…
We prove a family of $L^p$ uncertainty inequalities on fairly general groups and homogeneous spaces, both in the smooth and in the discrete setting. The crucial point is the proof of the $L^1$ endpoint, which is derived from a general weak isoperimetric inequality.
In recent years, it has been shown that some classical inequalities follow from a local stochastic dominance for naturally associated random polytopes. We strengthen planar isoperimetric inequalities by attaching a stochastic model to some classical inequalities, such as Mahler's Theorem, and a reverse Lutwak-Zhang inequality, the polar for $L_p$ centroid bodies. In particular, we obtain the dual counterpart to a result of Bisztriczky-Böröczky.
We consider the class of $λ$-concave bodies in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$; that is, convex bodies with the property that each of their boundary points supports a tangent ball of radius $1/λ$ that lies locally (around the boundary point) inside the body. In this class we solve a reverse isoperimetric problem: we show that the convex hull of two balls of radius $1/λ$ (a sausage body) is a unique volume minimizer among all $λ$-concave bodies of given surface area. This is in a surprising contrast to the standard isoperimetric problem for which, as it is well-known, the unique maximizer is a ball. We solve…
This article treats isoperimetric inequalities for integral currents in the setting of stratified nilpotent Lie groups equipped with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. We prove that for each such group there is a dimension in which no Euclidean isoperimetric inequality is admitted, while in all smaller dimensions strictly Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities are satisfied.
In this paper we adapt the well-estabilished $Γ$-calculus techniques to the context of $RCD(K,\infty)$ spaces, proving Bobkov's local isoperimetric inequality and, when $K$ is positive, the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality in this class of spaces. The proof relies on the measure-valued $Γ_2$ operator introduced by Savaré.
We discuss isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets. These include the classical isoperimetric inequality and that of Brunn-Minkowski, Blaschke-Santalo, Busemann-Petty and their various extensions. We show that many such inequalities admit stronger randomized forms in the following sense: for natural families of associated random convex sets one has stochastic dominance for various functionals such as volume, surface area, mean width and others. By laws of large numbers, these randomized versions recover the classical inequalities. We give an overview of when such stochastic dominance arises…
A celebrated theorem of Kanai states that quasi-isometries preserve isoperimetric inequalities between uniform Riemannian manifolds (with positive injectivity radius) and graphs. Our main result states that we can study the (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in a Riemann surface by using a graph related to it, even if the surface has injectivity radius zero (this graph is inspired in Kanai's graph, but it is different from it). We also present an application relating Gromov boundary and isoperimetric inequality.
We prove that the results regarding the Isoperimetric inequality and Cheeger constant formulated in terms of the Minkowski content, obtained by the authors in previous papers in the framework of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces verifying the local curvature dimension condition, also hold in the stronger formulation in terms of the perimeter.
We obtain new sharp isoperimetric inequalities on a Riemannian manifold equipped with a probability measure, whose generalized Ricci curvature is bounded from below (possibly negatively), and generalized dimension and diameter of the convex support are bounded from above (possibly infinitely). Our inequalities are sharp for sets of any given measure and with respect to all parameters (curvature, dimension and diameter). Moreover, for each choice of parameters, we identify the model spaces which are extremal for the isoperimetric problem. In particular, we recover the Gromov--Lévy and Bakry--Le…
In the Heisenberg group H^n, we prove quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for Pansu's spheres, that are known to be isoperimetric under various assumptions. The inequalities are shown for suitably restricted classes of competing sets and the proof relies on the construction of sub-calibrations.
The classical isoperimetric inequality can be extended to a general normed plane. In the Euclidean plane, the defect in the isoperimetric inequality can be calculated in terms of the signed areas of some singular sets. In this paper we consider normed planes with smooth by parts unit balls and the corresponding class of admissible curves. For such an admissible curve, the singular sets are defined as projections in the subspaces of symmetric and constant width admissible curves. In this context, we obtain some improved isoperimetric inequalities whose equality hold for symmetric or constant wi…
In this paper, we prove a class of weighted isoperimetric inequalities for bounded domains in hyperbolic space by using the isoperimetric inequality with log-convex density in Euclidean space. As a consequence, we remove the horo-convex assumption of domains in a weighted isoperimetric inequality proved by Scheuer-Xia. Furthermore, we prove weighted isoperimetric inequalities for star-shaped domains in warped product manifolds. Particularly, we obtain a weighted isoperimetric inequality for star-shaped hypersurfaces lying outside a certain radial coordinate slice in the anti-de Sitter-Schwarzs…
A unified approach used to generalize classical Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities to Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities, called the Lp transference principle, is refined in this paper. As illustrations of the effectiveness and practicability of this method, several new Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities concerning the mixed volume, moment of inertia, quermassintegral, projection body and capacity are established.
In this note we apply the billiard technique to deduce some results on Viterbo's conjectured inequality between volume of a convex body and its symplectic capacity. We show that the product of a permutohedron and a simplex (properly related to each other) delivers equality in Viterbo's conjecture. Using this result as well as previously known equality cases, we prove some special cases of Viterbo's conjecture and interpret them as isoperimetric-like inequalities for billiard trajectories.
We prove that on an essentially non-branching $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ space, if a geodesic ball has a volume lower bound and satisfies some additional geometric conditions, then in a smaller geodesic ball (in a quantified sense) we have an estimate on the isoperimetric constants.
In this paper we construct a large family of examples of subsets of Euclidean space that support a 1-Poincaré inequality yet have empty interior. These examples are formed from an iterative process that involves removing well-behaved domains, or more precisely, domains whose complements are uniform in the sense of Martio and Sarvas. While existing arguments rely on explicit constructions of Semmes families of curves, we include a new way of obtaining Poincaré inequalities through the use of relative isoperimetric inequalities, after Korte and Lahti. To do so, we further introduce the notion of…
In this paper we consider the isoperimetric profile of convex cylinders $K\times\mathbb{R}^q$, where $K$ is an $m$-dimensional convex body, and of cylindrically bounded convex sets, i.e, those with a relatively compact orthogonal projection over some hyperplane of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, asymptotic to a right convex cylinder of the form $K\times\mathbb{R}$, with $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Results concerning the concavity of the isoperimetric profile, existence of isoperimetric regions, and geometric descriptions of isoperimetric regions for small and large volumes are obtained.
We consider the edge- and vertex-isoperimetric probem on finite and infinite hexagonal grids: For a subset W of the hexagonal grid of given cardinality, we give a lower bound for the number of edges between W and its complement, and lower bounds for the number of vertices in the neighborhood of W and for the number of vertices in the boundary of W. For the infinite hexagonal grid the given bounds are tight.
This paper is about hyperbolic properties on planar graphs. First, we study the relations among various kinds of strong isoperimetric inequalities on planar graphs and their duals. In particular, we show that a planar graph satisfies a strong isoperimetric inequality if and only if its dual has the same property, if the graph satisfies some minor regularity conditions and we choose an appropriate notion of strong isoperimetric inequalities. Second, we consider planar graphs where negative combinatorial curvatures dominate, and use the outcomes of the first part to strengthen the results of Hig…
In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a convex body, i.e., a compact convex set in Euclidean space with interior points. We shall not impose any regularity assumption on the boundary of the convex set. Amongst other results, we shall prove the equivalence between Hausdorff and Lipschitz convergence, the continuity of the isoperimetric profile with respect to the Hausdorff distance, and the convergence in Hausdorff distance of sequences of isoperimetric regions and their free boundaries. We shall also describe the …
We prove a pair of sharp reverse isoperimetric inequalities for domains in nonpositively curved surfaces: (1) metric disks centered at the vertex of a Euclidean cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved disks of the same perimeter and the same total curvature; (2) geodesic triangles in a Euclidean (resp. hyperbolic) cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved geodesic triangles (resp. all geodesic triangles of curvature at most $-1$) with the same side lengths and angles.
We prove that if a quasiconvex subset $X$ of a metric space $Y$ has finite Nagata dimension and is Lipschitz $k$-connected or admits Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities up to dimension $k$ for some $k$ then $X$ is isoperimetrically undistorted in $Y$ up to dimension $k+1$. This generalizes and strengthens a recent result of the third named author and has several consequences and applications. It yields for example that in spaces of finite Nagata dimension, Lipschitz connectedness implies Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities, and Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities imply coning inequalities. …
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
We consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in an unbounded convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, without assuming any further regularity on the boundary of $C$. Motivated by an example of an unbounded convex body with null isoperimetric profile, we introduce the concept of unbounded convex body with uniform geometry. We then provide a handy characterization of the uniform geometry property and, by exploiting the notion of asymptotic cylinder of $C$, we prove existence of isoperimetric regions in a generalized sense. By an approximation argument we…
For a general family of graphs on $\mathbb{Z}^n$, we translate the edge-isoperimetric problem into a continuous isoperimetric problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We then solve the continuous isoperimetric problem using the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and Minkowski's theorem on Mixed Volumes. This translation allows us to conclude, under a reasonable assumption about the discrete problem, that the shapes of the optimal sets in the discrete problem approach the shape of the optimal set in the continuous problem as the size of the set grows. The solution is the zonotope defined as the Minkowski sum of the …
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
We prove an inequality, valid on any finitely generated group with a fixed finite symmetric generating set, involving the growth of successive balls, and the average length of an element in a ball. It generalizes recent improvements of the Coulhon Saloff-Coste inequality. We reformulate the inequality in terms of the Følner function; in the case the finitely generated group is amenable with exponential growth, this allows us to express the best possible (outer) constant in the Coulhon Saloff-Coste isoperimetric inequality with the help of a formula involving the growth rate and the asymptotic …
We prove an inequality for submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, which relates the geometry of a submanifold to the measure of the geodesics in the ambient space which it intersects. For hypersurfaces, this gives an extension of Banchoff and Pohl's isoperimetric inequality to spaces of non-positive curvature. We also prove a modified version of Croke's isoperimetric inequality for hypersurfaces immersed in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and a sharp, quantitative version of an isoperimetric inequality of Yau in spaces of negative curvature. We discuss the relationship between these results, and…
We show that the Cheeger constant of compact surfaces is bounded by a function of the area. We apply this to isoperimetric profiles of bounded genus non-compact surfaces, to show that if their isoperimetric profile grows faster than $\sqrt t$, then it grows at least as fast as a linear function. This generalizes a result of Gromov for simply connected surfaces. We study the isoperimetric problem in dimension 3. We show that if the filling volume function in dimension 2 is Euclidean, while in dimension 3 is sub-Euclidean and there is a $g$ such that minimizers in dimension 3 have genus at most …
