The isoperimetric quotient of the whole family of inner and outer parallel bodies of a convex body is shown to be decreasing in the parameter of definition of parallel bodies, along with a characterization of those convex bodies for which that quotient happens to be constant on some interval within its domain. This is obtained relative to arbitrary gauge bodies, having the classical Euclidean setting as a particular case. Similar results are established for different families of Wulff shapes that are closely related to parallel bodies. These give rise to solutions of isoperimetric-type problems. Furthermore, new results on the monotonicity of quotients of other quermassintegrals different from surface area and volume, for the family of parallel bodies, are obtained.
We show a reverse isoperimetric inequality within the class of relative outer parallel bodies, with respect to a general convex body $E$, along with its equality condition. Based on the convexity of the sequence of quermassintegrals of Minkowski sums we also prove further inequalities.
We analyze aspects of the behavior of the family of inner parallel bodies of a convex body for the isoperimetric quotient and deficit of arbitrary quermassintegrals. By means of technical boundary properties of the so-called form body of a convex body and similar constructions for inner parallel bodies, we point out an erroneous use of a relation between the latter bodies in two different works. We correct these results, limiting them to convex bodies having a very precise boundary structure.
The aim of this note is twofold: to give a short proof of the results in [S. Larson, A bound for the perimeter of inner parallel bodies, J. Funct. Anal. 271 (2016), 610-619] and [G. Domokos and Z. Lángi, The isoperimetric quotient of a convex body decreases monotonically under the eikonal abrasion model, Mathematika 65 (2019), 119-129]; and to generalize them to the anisotropic case.
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
A stability version of the Blaschke-Santaló inequality and the affine isoperimetric inequality for convex bodies of dimension n>2 is proved. The first step is the reduction to the case when the convex body is o-symmetric and has axial rotational symmetry. This step works for related inequalities compatible with Steiner symmetrization. Secondly, for these convex bodies, a stability version of the characterization of ellipsoids by the fact that each hyperplane section is centrally symmetric is established.
In this paper we consider the isoperimetric profile of convex cylinders $K\times\mathbb{R}^q$, where $K$ is an $m$-dimensional convex body, and of cylindrically bounded convex sets, i.e, those with a relatively compact orthogonal projection over some hyperplane of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, asymptotic to a right convex cylinder of the form $K\times\mathbb{R}$, with $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Results concerning the concavity of the isoperimetric profile, existence of isoperimetric regions, and geometric descriptions of isoperimetric regions for small and large volumes are obtained.
For a broad class of integral functionals defined on the space of $n$-dimensional convex bodies, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for monotonicity, and necessary conditions for the validity of a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. In particular, we prove that a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality implies monotonicity, and that a general Brunn-Minkowski type inequality is equivalent to the functional being a mixed volume.
In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a convex body, i.e., a compact convex set in Euclidean space with interior points. We shall not impose any regularity assumption on the boundary of the convex set. Amongst other results, we shall prove the equivalence between Hausdorff and Lipschitz convergence, the continuity of the isoperimetric profile with respect to the Hausdorff distance, and the convergence in Hausdorff distance of sequences of isoperimetric regions and their free boundaries. We shall also describe the …
We consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in an unbounded convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, without assuming any further regularity on the boundary of $C$. Motivated by an example of an unbounded convex body with null isoperimetric profile, we introduce the concept of unbounded convex body with uniform geometry. We then provide a handy characterization of the uniform geometry property and, by exploiting the notion of asymptotic cylinder of $C$, we prove existence of isoperimetric regions in a generalized sense. By an approximation argument we…
We consider the problem of lower bounding a generalized Minkowski measure of subsets of a convex body with a log-concave probability measure, conditioned on the set size. A bound is given in terms of diameter and set size, which is sharp for all set sizes, dimensions, and norms. In the case of uniform density a stronger theorem is shown which is also sharp.
In this paper we solve several reverse isoperimetric problems in the class of $λ$-convex bodies, i.e., convex bodies whose curvature at each point of their boundary is bounded below by some $λ> 0$. We give an affirmative answer in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to a conjecture due to Borisenko which states that the $λ$-convex lens, i.e., the intersection of two balls of radius $1/λ$, is the unique minimizer of volume among all $λ$-convex bodies of given surface area. Also, we prove a reverse inradius inequality: in model spaces of constant curvature and arbitrary dimension, we show that the $λ$-convex lens (p…
We consider the class of $λ$-concave bodies in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$; that is, convex bodies with the property that each of their boundary points supports a tangent ball of radius $1/λ$ that lies locally (around the boundary point) inside the body. In this class we solve a reverse isoperimetric problem: we show that the convex hull of two balls of radius $1/λ$ (a sausage body) is a unique volume minimizer among all $λ$-concave bodies of given surface area. This is in a surprising contrast to the standard isoperimetric problem for which, as it is well-known, the unique maximizer is a ball. We solve…
The minimizers of the anisotropic fractional isoperimetric inequality with respect to the convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are shown to be equivalent to star bodies whenever $K$ is strictly convex and unconditional. From this a Pólya-Szegö principle for anisotropic fractional seminorms is derived by using symmetrization with respect to star bodies.
This paper presents bounds for the best approximation, with respect to the Hausdorff metric, of a convex body $K$ by a circumscribed polytope $P$ with a given number of facets. These bounds are of particular interest if $K$ is elongated. To measure the elongation of the convex set, its isoperimetric ratio $ V_j(K)^{1/j} V_i(K)^{-1/i} $ is used.
We establish a family of isoperimetric inequalities for sets that interpolate between intersection bodies and dual Lp centroid bodies. This provides a bridge between the Busemann intersection inequality and the Lutwak--Zhang inequality. The approach depends on new empirical versions of these inequalities.
The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory receives considerable attention recently, and many results in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory have been extended to their Orlicz counterparts. The aim of this paper is to develop Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for single convex body as well as for multiple convex bodies, which generalize the $L_p$ (mixed) affine and geominimal surface areas -- fundamental concepts in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory. Our extensions are different from the general affine surface areas by Ludwig (in Adv. Math. 224 (2010)). Moreover, our definitions for Orlicz $…
We extend the definition of the centroid body operator to an Orlicz--Lorentz centroid body operator on the star bodies in $\mathbb R^n$, and establish the sharp affine isoperimetric inequality that bounds (from below) the volume of the Orlicz--Lorentz centroid body of any convex body containing the origin in its interior by the volume of this convex body.
We investigate the weighted $L_p$ affine surface areas which appear in the recently established $L_p$ Steiner formula of the $L_p$ Brunn Minkowski theory. We show that they are valuations on the set of convex bodies and prove isoperimetric inequalities for them. We show that they are related to $f$ divergences of the cone measures of the convex body and its polar, namely the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the Rényi-divergence.
We give the sharp lower bound of the volume product of $n$-dimensional convex bodies which are invariant under a discrete subgroup $SO(K)=\{ g \in SO(n); g(K)=K \}$, where $K$ is an $n$-cube or $n$-simplex. This provides new partial results of Mahler's conjecture and its non-symmetric version. In addition, we give partial answers for Viterbo's isoperimetric type conjecture in symplectic geometry from the view point of Mahler's conjecture.
The affine quermassintegrals associated to a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are affine-invariant analogues of the classical intrinsic volumes from the Brunn-Minkowski theory, and thus constitute a central pillar of affine convex geometry. They were introduced in the 1980's by E. Lutwak, who conjectured that among all convex bodies of a given volume, the $k$-th affine quermassintegral is minimized precisely on the family of ellipsoids. The known cases $k=1$ and $k=n-1$ correspond to the classical Blaschke-Santaló and Petty projection inequalities, respectively. In this work we confirm Lutwak's c…
In this paper, we introduce several mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas for multiple convex bodies for all $p\neq -n$. Our definitions are motivated from an equivalent formula for the mixed $p$-affine surface area. Some properties, such as the affine invariance, for these mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas are proved. Related inequalities, such as, Alexander-Fenchel type inequality, Santaló style inequality, affine isoperimetric inequalities, and cyclic inequalities are established. Moreover, we also study some properties and inequalities for the $i$-th mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas …
In this note we link symplectic and convex geometry by relating two seemingly different open conjectures: a symplectic isoperimetric-type inequality for convex domains, and Mahler's conjecture on the volume product of centrally symmetric convex bodies. More precisely, we show that if for convex bodies of fixed volume in the classical phase space the Hofer-Zehnder capacity is maximized by the Euclidean ball, then a hypercube is a minimizer for the volume product among centrally symmetric convex bodies.
In 2015, I. Soprunov and A. Zvavitch have shown how to use the Bernstein-Khovanskii-Kushnirenko theorem to derive non-negativity of a certain bilinear form $F_Δ$, defined on (pairs of) convex bodies. Together with C. Saroglou, they proved non-negativity of $F_K$ characterizes simplices, among all polytopes. It is conjectured the characterization further holds among all convex bodies. Towards this conjecture, several necessary conditions on $K$ (for non-negativity of $F_K$), were derived. We give a new necessary condition, expressed with isoperimetric ratios, which provides a further step towar…
On the class of log-concave functions on $\R^n$, endowed with a suitable algebraic structure, we study the first variation of the total mass functional, which corresponds to the volume of convex bodies when restricted to the subclass of characteristic functions. We prove some integral representation formulae for such first variation, which lead to define in a natural way the notion of area measure for a log-concave function. In the same framework, we obtain a functional counterpart of Minkowski first inequality for convex bodies; as corollaries, we derive a functional form of the isoperimetric…
Zhang's reverse affine isoperimetric inequality states that among all convex bodies $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, the affine invariant quantity $|K|^{n-1}|Π^*(K)|$ (where $Π^*(K)$ denotes the polar projection body of $K$) is minimized if and only if $K$ is a simplex. In this paper we prove an extension of Zhang's inequality in the setting of integrable log-concave functions, characterizing also the equality cases.
This is an extended version of a talk on October 4, 2004 at the research seminar ``Differential geometry and applications'' (headed by Academician A. T. Fomenko) at Moscow State University. The paper contains an overview of available (but far from well-known) results about the Blaschke addition of convex bodies, some new theorems on the monotonicity of the volume of convex bodies (in particular, convex polyhedra with parallel faces) as well as description of a software for visualization of polyhedra with prescribed outward normals and face areas.
The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, a far-reaching generalization of the classical isoperimetric inequality to arbitrary mixed volumes, lies at the heart of convex geometry. The characterization of its extremal bodies is a long-standing open problem that dates back to Alexandrov's original 1937 paper. The known extremals already form a very rich family, and even the fundamental conjectures on their general structure, due to Schneider, are incomplete. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes. In particular, we show that the extre…
What is the least surface area of a symmetric body $B$ whose $\mathbb{Z}^n$ translations tile $\mathbb{R}^n$? Since any such body must have volume $1$, the isoperimetric inequality implies that its surface area must be at least $Ω(\sqrt{n})$. Remarkably, Kindler et al.\ showed that for general bodies $B$ this is tight, i.e.\ that there is a tiling body of $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose surface area is $O(\sqrt{n})$. In theoretical computer science, the tiling problem is intimately to the study of parallel repetition theorems (which are an important component in PCPs), and more specifically in the questi…
