The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, a far-reaching generalization of the classical isoperimetric inequality to arbitrary mixed volumes, lies at the heart of convex geometry. The characterization of its extremal bodies is a long-standing open problem that dates back to Alexandrov's original 1937 paper. The known extremals already form a very rich family, and even the fundamental conjectures on their general structure, due to Schneider, are incomplete. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes. In particular, we show that the extremals arise from the combination of three distinct mechanisms: translation, support, and dimensionality. The characterization of these mechanisms requires the development of a diverse range of techniques that shed new light on the geometry of mixed volumes of nonsmooth convex bodies. Our main result extends further beyond polytopes in a number of ways, including to the setting of quermassintegrals of arbitrary convex bodies. As an application of our main result, we settle a question of Stanley on the extremal behavior of certain log-concave sequences that arise in the combinatorics of partially ordered sets.
In this note we give an answer to a question about mixed volumes asked by Gromov in his paper "Convex Sets and Kahler Manifolds". For reader's convenience we remind definitions and some of the properties of mixed volumes and mixed discriminants.
In this article, we give a complex-geometric proof of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality without using toric compactifications. The idea is to use the Legendre transform and develop the Brascamp-Lieb proof of the Prékopa theorem. New ingredients in our proof include an integration of Timorin's mixed Hodge-Riemann bilinear relation and a mixed norm version of Hörmander's $L^2$-estimate, which also implies a non-compact version of the Khovanskiĭ-Teissier inequality.
The Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality bounds from below the square of the mixed volume $V(K_1,K_2,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$ of convex bodies $K_1,\ldots,K_n$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ by the product of the mixed volumes $V(K_1,K_1,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$ and $V(K_2,K_2,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$. As a consequence, for integers $α_1,\ldots,α_m\in\mathbb{N}$ with $α_1+\cdots+α_m=n$ the product $V_n(K_1)^{\frac{α_1}{n}}\cdots V_n(K_m)^{\frac{α_m}{n}} $ of suitable powers of the volumes $V_n(K_i)$ of the convex bodies $K_i$, $i=1,\ldots,m$, is a lower bound for the mixed volume $V(K_1[α_1],\ldots,K_m[α_m])$, where $α_i$ is the multip…
We present a constructive proof of Alexandrov's theorem regarding the existence of a convex polytope with a given metric on the boundary. The polytope is obtained as a result of a certain deformation in the class of generalized convex polytopes with the given boundary. We study the space of generalized convex polytopes and discover a relation with the weighted Delaunay triangulations of polyhedral surfaces. The existence of the deformation follows from the non-degeneracy of the Hessian of the total scalar curvature of a positively curved generalized convex polytope. The latter is shown to be e…
We prove the reversed Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed Monge-Ampère masses of plurisubharmonic functions, which generalizes a result of Demailly and Pham. As applications to convex geometry, this gives a complex analytic proof of the reversed Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed covolumes, which generalizes recent results in convex geometry of Kaveh-Khovanskii, Khovanskii-Timorin, Milman-Rotem and R. Schneider on reversed (or complemented) Brunn-Minkowski and Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. Also for toric plurisubharmonic functions in the Cegrell class, we confirm Demailly's conject…
We prove a Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre-type inequality for the lattice of compositions of the integer n with at most r parts. As an immediate application we get a wide generalization of the classical Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes and of Teissier's inequality for mixed covolumes.
We prove new Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities and new affine isoperimetric inequalities for mixed $p$-affine surface areas. We introduce a new class of bodies, the illumination surface bodies, and establish some of their properties. We show, for instance, that they are not necessarily convex. We give geometric interpretations of $L_p$ affine surface areas, mixed $p$-affine surface areas and other functionals via these bodies. The surprising new element is that not necessarily convex bodies provide the tool for these interpretations.
In this paper, the concept of the classical $f$-divergence (for a pair of measures) is extended to the mixed $f$-divergence (for multiple pairs of measures). The mixed $f$-divergence provides a way to measure the difference between multiple pairs of (probability) measures. Properties for the mixed $f$-divergence are established, such as permutation invariance and symmetry in distributions. An Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequality and an isoperimetric type inequality for the mixed $f$-divergence will be proved and applications in the theory of convex bodies are given.
In the course of classifying generic sparse polynomial systems which are solvable in radicals, Esterov recently showed that the volume of the Minkowski sum $P_1+\dots+P_d$ of $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes is bounded from above by a function of order $O(m^{2^d})$, where $m$ is the mixed volume of the tuple $(P_1,\dots,P_d)$. This is a consequence of the well-known Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality. Esterov also posed the problem of determining a sharper bound. We show how additional relations between mixed volumes can be employed to improve the bound to $O(m^d)$, which is asymptotically sharp.…
We develop a calculus based on zonoids - a special class of convex bodies - for the expectation of functionals related to a random submanifold $Z$ defined as the zero set of a smooth vector valued random field on a Riemannian manifold. We identify a convenient set of hypotheses on the random field under which we define its zonoid section, an assignment of a zonoid $ζ(p)$ in the exterior algebra of the cotangent space at each point $p$ of the manifold. We prove that the first intrinsic volume of $ζ(p)$ is the Kac-Rice density of the expected volume of $Z$, while its center computes the expected…
