In the course of classifying generic sparse polynomial systems which are solvable in radicals, Esterov recently showed that the volume of the Minkowski sum $P_1+\dots+P_d$ of $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes is bounded from above by a function of order $O(m^{2^d})$, where $m$ is the mixed volume of the tuple $(P_1,\dots,P_d)$. This is a consequence of the well-known Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality. Esterov also posed the problem of determining a sharper bound. We show how additional relations between mixed volumes can be employed to improve the bound to $O(m^d)$, which is asymptotically sharp. We furthermore prove a sharp exact upper bound in dimensions 2 and 3. Our results generalize to tuples of arbitrary convex bodies with volume at least one.
We consider the problem of finding the best function $φ_n:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$ such that for any pair of convex bodies $K,L\in\mathbb{R}^n$ the following Brunn-Minkowski type inequality holds $$ |K+_θL|^\frac{1}{n}\geqφ_n(θ)(|K|^\frac{1}{n}+|L|^\frac{1}{n}), $$ where $K+_θL$ is the $θ$-convolution body of $K$ and $L$. We prove a sharp inclusion of the family of Ball's bodies of an $α$-concave function in its super-level sets in order to provide the best possible function in the range $\left(\frac{3}{4}\right)^n\leqθ\leq1$, characterizing the equality cases.
In this short note we explain why the log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture is correct for complex convex bodies. We do this by relating the conjecture to the notion of complex interpolation, and appealing to a general theorem by Cordero-Erausquin.
In an earlier paper \cite{mazeng} the authors introduced the notion of curvature entropy, and proved the plane log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy under the symmetry assumption. In this paper we demonstrate the plane log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy for general convex bodies. The equivalence of the uniqueness of cone-volume measure, the log-Minkowski inequality of volume, and the log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy for general convex bodies in $\mathbb R^{2}$ are shown.
The theory of coconvex bodies was formalized by A.~Khovanski{\uı} and V.~Timorin in \cite{KT}. It has fascinating relations with the classical theory of convex bodies, as well as applications to Lorentzian geometry. In a recent preprint \cite{schnei2}, R.~Schneider proved a result that implies a reversed Brunn--Minkowski inequality for coconvex bodies, with description of equality case. In this note we show that this latter result is an immediate consequence of a more general result, namely that the volume of coconvex bodies is strictly convex. This result itself follows from a classical eleme…
We prove several stability and volume difference inequalities for projections of convex bodies and apply them to prove a hyperplane inequality for surface area of projection bodies.
In this paper, we first introduce a new concept of {\it dual quermassintegral sum function} of two star bodies and establish Minkowski's type inequality for dual quermassintegral sum of mixed intersection bodies, which is a general form of the Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies. Then, we give the Aleksandrov--Fenchel inequality and the Brunn--Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies and some related results. Our results present, for intersection bodies, all dual inequalities for Lutwak's mixed prosection bodies inequalities.
A unified approach used to generalize classical Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities to Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities, called the Lp transference principle, is refined in this paper. As illustrations of the effectiveness and practicability of this method, several new Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities concerning the mixed volume, moment of inertia, quermassintegral, projection body and capacity are established.
A generalization of pairwise intersecting Minkowski arrangement of centrally symmetric convex bodies is the pairwise intersecting Minkowski arrangement of order $μ$. Here, the homothetic copies of a centrally symmetric convex body are so that none of their interiors intersect the $μ$-kernel of any other. We give general upper and lower bounds on the cardinality of such arrangements, and study two special cases: For $d$-dimensional translates in classical pairwise intersecting Minkowski arrangement we prove that the sharp upper bound is $3^d$. For $μ=1$ the general version yields to another kno…
We use Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for quermassintegrals to deduce a family of inequalities of Poincaré type on the unit sphere and on the boundary of smooth convex bodies in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
For a broad class of integral functionals defined on the space of $n$-dimensional convex bodies, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for monotonicity, and necessary conditions for the validity of a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. In particular, we prove that a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality implies monotonicity, and that a general Brunn-Minkowski type inequality is equivalent to the functional being a mixed volume.
A Minkowski class is a closed subset of the space of convex bodies in Euclidean space Rn which is closed under Minkowski addition and non-negative dilatations. A convex body in Rn is universal if the expansion of its support function in spherical harmonics contains non-zero harmonics of all orders. If K is universal, then a dense class of convex bodies M has the following property. There exist convex bodies T1; T2 such that M + T1 = T2, and T1; T2 belong to the rotation invariant Minkowski class generated by K. It is shown that every convex body K which is not centrally symmetric has a linear …
In this paper, we propose and study the polar Orlicz-Minkowski problems: under what conditions on a nonzero finite measure $μ$ and a continuous function $φ:(0,\infty)\rightarrow(0,\infty)$, there exists a convex body $K\in\mathcal{K}_0$ such that $K$ is an optimizer of the following optimization problems: \begin{equation*} \inf/\sup \bigg\{\int_{S^{n-1}}φ\big( h_L \big) \,d μ: L \in \mathcal{K}_{0} \ \text{and}\ |L^\circ|=ω_{n}\bigg\}. \end{equation*} The solvability of the polar Orlicz-Minkowski problems is discussed under different conditions. In particular, under certain conditions on $φ,$ …
Lutwak's volume inequalities for polar projection bodies of all orders are generalized to polarizations of Minkowski valuations generated by even, zonal measures on the Euclidean unit sphere. This is based on analogues of mixed projection bodies for such Minkowski valuations and a generalization of the notion of centroid bodies. A new integral representation is used to single out Lutwak's inequalities as the strongest among these families of inequalities, which in turn are related to a conjecture on affine quermassintegrals. In the dual setting, a generalization of volume inequalities for inte…
In this paper we establish Minkowski inequality and Brunn--Minkowski inequality for $p$-quermassintegral differences of convex bodies. Further, we give Minkowski inequality and Brunn--Minkowski inequality for quermassintegral differences of mixed projection bodies.
Very recently J. Kotrbaty has proven general inequalities for translation invariant smooth valuations formally analogous to the Hodge- Riemann bilinear relations in the Kahler geometry. The goal of this note is to apply Kotrbaty's theorem to obtain a few apparently new inequalities for mixed volumes of convex bodies.
Analogues of the classical inequalities from the Brunn-Minkowski theory for rotation intertwining additive maps of convex bodies are developed. Analogues are also proved of inequalities from the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory for intertwining additive maps of star bodies. These inequalities provide generalizations of results for projection and intersection bodies. As a corollary, a new Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained for the volume of polar projection bodies.
The notion of ball convexity, considered in finite dimensional real Banach spaces, is a natural and useful extension of usual convexity; one replaces intersections of half-spaces by suitable intersections of balls. A subset $S$ of a normed space is called ball convex if it coincides with its ball hull, which is obtained as intersection of all balls (of fixed radius) containing $S$. Ball convex sets are closely related to notions like ball polytopes, complete sets, bodies of constant width, and spindle convexity. We will study geometric properties of ball convex bodies in normed spaces, for exa…
The classical Loomis-Whitney inequality and the uniform cover inequality of Bollobás and Thomason provide lower bounds for the volume of a compact set in terms of its lower dimensional coordinate projections. We provide further extensions of these inequalities in the setting of convex bodies. We also establish the corresponding dual inequalities for coordinate sections; these uniform cover inequalities for sections may be viewed as extensions of Meyer's dual Loomis-Whitney inequality.
We study the class of (locally) anti-blocking bodies as well as some associated classes of convex bodies. For these bodies, we prove geometric inequalities regarding volumes and mixed volumes, including Godberson's conjecture, near-optimal bounds on Mahler volumes, Saint-Raymond-type inequalities on mixed volumes, and reverse Kleitman inequalities for mixed volumes. We apply our results to the combinatorics of posets and prove Sidorenko-type inequalities for linear extensions of pairs of 2-dimensional posets. The results rely on some elegant decompositions of differences of anti-blocking bodie…
We give an alternative proof for discrete Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities, recently obtained by Halikias, Klartag and the author. This proof also implies somewhat stronger weighted versions of these inequalities. Our approach generalizes ideas of Gozlan, Roberto, Samson and Tetali from the theory of measure transportation and provides new displacement convexity of entropy type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator.
We present an argument which leads from the Brunn-Minkowski inequality to a Poincare' type inequality on the boundary of convex bodies with smooth boundary and positive Gauss curvature
The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory, introduced by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang, is a new extension of the classical Brunn-Minkowski theory. It represents a generalization of the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory, analogous to the way that Orlicz spaces generalize $L_p$ spaces. For appropriate convex functions $φ:[0,\infty)^m\to [0,\infty)$, a new way of combining arbitrary sets in $\R^n$ is introduced. This operation, called Orlicz addition and denoted by $+_φ$, has several desirable properties, but is not associative unless it reduces to $L_p$ addition. A general framework is introduced for the Orlicz-B…
It is shown that each monotone Minkowski endomorphism of convex bodies gives rise to an isoperimetric inequality which directly implies the classical Urysohn inequality. Among this large family of new inequalities, the only affine invariant one - the Blaschke-Santaló inequality - turns out to be the strongest one. A further extension of these inequalities to merely weakly monotone Minkowski endomorphisms is proven to be impossible. Moreover, for functional analogues of monotone Minkowski endomorphisms, a family of analytic inequalities for log-concave functions is established which generalizes…
Lutwak, Yang and Zhang \cite{LYZ2018} introduced the $L_p$ dual curvature measure that unifies several other geometric measures in dual Brunn-Minkowski theory and Brunn- Minkowski theory. Motivated by works in \cite{LYZ2018}, we consider the uniqueness and continuity of the solution to the $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem. To extend the important work (Theorem \ref{uniquepolytope}) of LYZ to the case for general convex bodies, we establish some new Minkowski-type inequalities which are closely related to the optimization problem associated with the $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem. When $q< p$, the un…
A complete classification is established of Minkowski valuations on lattice polytopes that intertwine the special linear group over the integers and are translation invariant. In the contravariant case, the only such valuations are multiples of projection bodies. In the equivariant case, the only such valuations are generalized difference bodies combined with multiples of the newly defined discrete Steiner point.
We study upper bounds on the number of lattice points for convex bodies having their centroid at the origin. For the family of simplices as well as in the planar case we obtain best possible results. For arbitrary convex bodies we provide an upper bound, which extends the centrally symmetric case and which, in particular, shows that the centroid assumption is indeed much more restrictive than an assumption on the number of interior lattice points even for the class of lattice polytopes.
We prove the validity of the $p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the intrinsic volume $V_k$, $k=2,\dots, n-1$, of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in a neighborhood of the unit ball, for $0\le p<1$. We also prove that this inequality does not hold true on the entire class of convex bodies of $\mathbb{R}^n$, when $p$ is sufficiently close to $0$.
We present an alternative, short proof of a recent discrete version of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality due to Lehec and the second named author. Our proof also yields the four functions theorem of Ahlswede and Daykin as well as some new variants.
We obtain a new extension of Rogers-Shephard inequality providing an upper bound for the volume of the sum of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. We also give lower bounds for the volume of the $k$-th limiting convolution body of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. Special attention is paid to the $(n-1)$-th limiting convolution body, for which a sharp inequality, which is equality only when $K=-L$ is a simplex, is given. Since the $n$-th limiting convolution body of $K$ and $-K$ is the polar projection body of $K$, these inequalities can be viewed as an extension of Zhang's inequality.
In this paper, we develop a basic theory of Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas for convex and $s$-concave functions. We prove some basic properties for these newly introduced functional affine invariants and establish related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities as well as functional Santaló type inequalities.
A classification of SL$(n)$ contravariant, continuous function valued valuations on convex bodies is established. Such valuations are natural extensions of SL$(n)$ contravariant $L_p$ Minkowski valuations, the classification of which characterized $L_p$ projection bodies, which are fundamental in the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski theory, for $p \geq 1$. Hence our result will help to better understand extensions of the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski theory. In fact, our results characterize general projection functions which extend $L_p$ projection functions ($p$-th powers of the support functions of $L_p$ proj…
Rotation intertwining maps from the set of convex bodies in Rn into itself that are continuous linear operators with respect to Minkowski and Blaschke addition are investigated. The main focus is on Blaschke-Minkowski homomorphisms. We show that such maps are represented by a spherical convolution operator. An application of this representation is a complete classification of all even Blaschke-Minkowski homomorphisms which shows that these maps behave in many respects similar to the well known projection body operator. Among further applications is the following result: If an even Blaschke-Min…
This paper develops basic setting for the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. An Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two or more star bodies is proposed and related dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a linear Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two star bodies, we derive a formula for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume. Moreover, a dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume, a dual Orlicz isoperimetric inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual surface area and a dual Orlicz-Urysohn inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-harmonic mean radius are…
This article derives closed-form parametric formulas for the Minkowski sums of convex bodies in d-dimensional Euclidean space with boundaries that are smooth and have all positive sectional curvatures at every point. Under these conditions, there is a unique relationship between the position of each boundary point and the surface normal. The main results are presented as two theorems. The first theorem directly parameterizes the Minkowski sums using the unit normal vector at each surface point. Although simple to express mathematically, such a parameterization is not always practical to obtain…
Log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality was conjectured by Boröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang \cite{BLYZ}, and it states that a certain strengthening of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality is admissible in the case of symmetric convex sets. It was recently shown by Nayar, Zvavitch, the second and the third authors \cite{LMNZ}, that Log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality implies a certain dimensional Brunn-Minkowski inequality for log-concave measures, which in the case of Gaussian measure was conjectured by Gardner and Zvavitch \cite{GZ}. In this note, we obtain stability results for both Log-Brunn-Minkowsk…
In this paper we state a one-to-one connection between the maximal ratio of the circumradius and the diameter of a body (the Jung constant) in an arbitrary Minkowski space and the maximal Minkowski asymmetry of the complete bodies within that space. This allows to generalize and unify recent results on complete bodies and to derive a necessary condition on the unit ball of the space, assuming a given body to be complete. Finally, we state several corollaries, i.e. concerning the Helly dimension or the Banach-Mazur distance.
Geometric and functional Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator $\mathrm{G}_n(\cdot)$ are provided. In particular, we show that $$\mathrm{G}_n((1-λ)K + λL + (-1,1)^n)^{1/n}\geq (1-λ)\mathrm{G}_n(K)^{1/n}+λ\mathrm{G}_n(L)^{1/n}$$ for any non-empty bounded sets $K, L\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and all $λ\in(0,1)$. We also show that these new discrete versions imply the classical results, and discuss some links with other related inequalities.
The dual Minkowski problem for even data asks what are the necessary and sufficient conditions on an even prescribed measure on the unit sphere for it to be the $q$-th dual curvature measure of an origin-symmetric convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$. A full solution to this is given when $1 < q < n$. The necessary and sufficient condition is an explicit measure concentration condition. A variational approach is used, where the functional is the sum of a dual quermassintegral and an entropy integral. The proof requires two crucial estimates. The first is an estimate of the entropy integral proved usi…
It is well known that in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space ($n\geq 2$) the classes of (diametrically) complete sets and of bodies of constant width coincide. Due to this, they both form a proper subfamily of the class of reduced bodies. For $n$-dimensional Minkowski spaces, this coincidence is no longer true if $n\geq 3$. Thus, the question occurs whether for $n\geq 3$ any complete set is reduced. Answering this in the negative for $n\geq 3$, we construct $(2^{k}-1)$-dimensional ($k\geq 2$) complete sets which are not reduced.
We show that for any Minkowski centered planar convex compact set $C$ the Harmonic mean of $C$ and $-C$ can be optimally contained in the arithmetic mean of the same sets if and only if the Minkowski asymmetry of $C$ is at most the golden ratio $(1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618$. Moreover, the most asymmetric such set that is (up to a linear transformation) a special pentagon, which we call the golden house.
We prove several inequalities estimating the distance between volumes of two bodies in terms of the maximal or minimal difference between areas of sections or projections of these bodies. We also provide extensions in which volume is replaced by an arbitrary measure.
We consider a generalization of the hyperplane problem to arbitrary measures in place of volume and to sections of lower dimensions. We prove this generalization for unconditional convex bodies and for duals of bodies with bounded volume ratio. We also prove it for arbitrary symmetric convex bodies under the condition that the dimension of sections is less than $λn$ for some $λ\in (0,1).$ The constant depends only on $λ.$ Finally, we show that the behavior of the minimal sections for some measures may be different from the case of volume.
General results on convex bodies are reviewed and used to derive an exact closed-form parametric formula for the Minkowski sum boundary of $m$ arbitrary ellipsoids in $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. Expressions for the principal curvatures of these Minkowski sums are also derived. These results are then used to obtain upper and lower volume bounds for the Minkowski sum of ellipsoids in terms of their defining matrices; the lower bounds are sharper than the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. A reverse isometric inequality for convex bodies is also given.
$L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski type inequa\-li\-ties for the lattice point enumerator $\mathrm{G}_n(\cdot)$ are shown, both in a geometrical and in a functional setting. In particular, we prove that \[\mathrm{G}_n\bigl((1-λ)\cdot K +_p λ\cdot L + (-1,1)^n\bigr)^{p/n}\geq (1-λ)\mathrm{G}_n(K)^{p/n}+λ\mathrm{G}_n(L)^{p/n}\] for any $K, L\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ bounded sets with integer points and all $λ\in(0,1)$. We also show that these new discrete analogues (for $\mathrm{G}_n(\cdot)$) imply the corresponding results concerning the Lebesgue measure.
