It is well known that in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space ($n\geq 2$) the classes of (diametrically) complete sets and of bodies of constant width coincide. Due to this, they both form a proper subfamily of the class of reduced bodies. For $n$-dimensional Minkowski spaces, this coincidence is no longer true if $n\geq 3$. Thus, the question occurs whether for $n\geq 3$ any complete set is reduced. Answering this in the negative for $n\geq 3$, we construct $(2^{k}-1)$-dimensional ($k\geq 2$) complete sets which are not reduced.
Minkowski's classical existence theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for a Borel measure on the unit sphere of Euclidean space to be the surface area measure of a convex body. The solution is unique up to a translation. We deal with corresponding questions for unbounded convex sets, whose behavior at infinity is determined by a given closed convex cone. We provide an existence theorem and a stability result.
Let $C$ be a closed convex cone in ${\mathbb R}^n$, pointed and with interior points. We consider sets of the form $A=C\setminus A^\bullet$, where $A^\bullet\subset C$ is a closed convex set. If $A$ has finite volume (Lebesgue measure), then $A$ is called a $C$-coconvex set. The family of $C$-coconvex sets is closed under the addition $\oplus$ defined by $C\setminus(A_1\oplus A_2)= (C\setminus A_1)+(C\setminus A_2)$. We develop first steps of a Brunn--Minkowski theory for $C$-coconvex sets, which relates this addition to the notion of volume. In particular, we establish the equality conditions…
In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretizati…
We study Minkowski contents and fractal curvatures of arbitrary self-similar tilings (constructed on a feasible open set of an IFS) and the general relations to the corresponding functionals for self-similar sets. In particular, we characterize the situation, when these functionals coincide. In this case, the Minkowski content and the fractal curvatures of a self-similar set can be expressed completely in terms of the volume function or curvature data, respectively, of the generator of the tiling. In special cases such formulas have been obtained recently using tube formulas and complex dimens…
We shall prove a convergence result relative to sequences of Minkowski symmetrals of general compact sets. In particular, we investigate the case when this process is induced by sequences of subspaces whose elements belong to a finite family, following the path marked by Klain in [13], and the generalizations in [4] and [2]. We prove an analogue result for Fiber symmetrization of a specific class of compact sets. The idempotency for symmetrization of this family of sets is investigated, leading to a simple generalization of a result from Klartag [14] regarding the approximation of a ball throu…
Let $K_1, K_2$ be two compact convex sets in $\mathit{C}$. Their Minkowski product is the set $K_1K_2 = \{ab: a \in K_1, b\in K_2\}$. We show that the set $K_1K_2$ is star-shaped if $K_1$ is a line segment or a circular disk. Examples for $K_1$ and $K_2$ are given so that $K_1$ and $K_2$ are triangles (including interior) and $K_1K_2$ is not star-shaped. This gives a negative answer to a conjecture by Puchala et. al concerning the product numerical range in the study of quantum information science. Additional results and open problems are presented.
It was shown recently that the Minkowski content of a bounded set $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with volume zero can be characterized in terms of the asymptotic behaviour of the boundary surface area of its parallel sets $A_r$ as the parallel radius $r$ tends to $0$. Here we discuss localizations of such results. The asymptotic behaviour of the local parallel volume of $A$ relative to a suitable second set $Ω$ can be understood in terms of the suitably defined local surface area relative to $Ω$. Also a measure version of this relation is shown: Viewing the Minkowski content as a locally determined mea…
We provide sharp upper bounds for the number of symmetrizations required to transform a star shaped set in ${\mathbb R}^n$ arbitrarily close (in the Hausdorff metric) to the Euclidean ball.
Let $C$ be a pointed closed convex cone in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with vertex at the origin $o$ and having nonempty interior. The set $A\subset C$ is $C$-coconvex if the volume of $A$ is finite and $A^{\bullet}=C\setminus A$ is a closed convex set. For $0<p<1$, the $p$-co-sum of $C$-coconvex sets is introduced, and the corresponding $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $C$-coconvex sets is established. We also define the $L_p$ surface area measures, for $0\neq p\in \mathbb{R}$, of certain $C$-coconvex sets, which are critical in deriving a variational formula of the volume of the Wulff shape associate…
The Minkowski content of a compact set is a fine measure of its geometric scaling. For Lebesgue null sets it measures the decay of the Lebesgue measure of epsilon neighbourhoods of the set. It is well known that self-similar sets, satisfying reasonable separation conditions and non-log comensurable contraction ratios, have a well-defined Minkowski content. When dropping the contraction conditions, the more general notion of average Minkowski content still exists. For random recursive self-similar sets the Minkowski content also exists almost surely, whereas for random homogeneous self-similar …
The notion of ball convexity, considered in finite dimensional real Banach spaces, is a natural and useful extension of usual convexity; one replaces intersections of half-spaces by suitable intersections of balls. A subset $S$ of a normed space is called ball convex if it coincides with its ball hull, which is obtained as intersection of all balls (of fixed radius) containing $S$. Ball convex sets are closely related to notions like ball polytopes, complete sets, bodies of constant width, and spindle convexity. We will study geometric properties of ball convex bodies in normed spaces, for exa…
This paper considers the radii functionals (circumradius, inradius, and diameter) as well as the Minkowski asymmetry for general (possibly non-symmetric) gauge bodies. A generalization of the concentricity inequality (which states that the sum of the inradius and circumradius is not greater than the diameter in general Minkowski spaces) for non-symmetric gauge bodies is derived and a strong connection between this new inequality, extremal sets of the generalized Bohnenblust inequality, and completeness of simplices is revealed.
Given a lattice $Λ\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we consider its Minkowski reduced basis and the solid angle $Ω$ spanned by the basis vectors. Such a basis satisfies strong near-orthogonality conditions, which allow us to bound from above and below the measure of $Ω$. Sharp upper and lower bounds are derived for all rank $3$ and rank $4$ lattices so that $Ω$ always measures in between. Extreme cases happen when $Λ$ is similar to the rectangular ($\mathcal{R}$) or alternating ($\mathcal{A}$) lattice. This result settles a question raised earlier by Fukshansky and Robins in connection to sphere packings…
A long-standing conjecture of Lapidus claims that under certain conditions, self-similar fractal sets fail to be Minkowski measurable if and only if they are of lattice type. The theorem was established for fractal subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ by Falconer, Lapidus and v.~Frankenhuijsen, and the forward direction was shown for fractal subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, by Gatzouras. Since then, much effort has been made to prove the converse. In this paper, we prove a partial converse by means of renewal theory. Our proof allows us to recover several previous results in this regard, but is much …
Given one metric measure space $X$ satisfying a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality, and a second one $Y$ satisfying a Brunn-Minkowski inequality with exponent $p\ge -1$, we prove that the product $X\times Y$ with the standard product distance and measure satisfies a Brunn-Minkowski inequality of order $1/(1+p^{-1})$ under mild conditions on the measures and the assumption that the distances are strictly intrinsic. The same result holds when we consider restricted classes of sets. We also prove that a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained in $X\times Y$ when $Y$ satisfies a Prékopa-Leind…
The structure of $k$-diametral point configurations in Minkowski $d$-space is shown to be closely related to the properties of $k$-antipodal point configurations in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular, the maximum size of $k$-diametral point configurations of Minkowski $d$-spaces is obtained for given $k\geq 2$ and $d\geq 2$ generalizing Petty's results (Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 29: 369-374, 1971) on equilateral sets in Minkowski spaces. Furthermore, bounds are derived for the maximum size of $k$-diametral point configurations in Euclidean $d$-space. In the proofs convexity methods are combined with vol…
For a compact set $A \subset {\mathbb R}^d$ and an integer $k\ge 1$, let us denote by $$ A[k] = \left\{a_1+\cdots +a_k: a_1, \ldots, a_k\in A\right\}=\sum_{i=1}^k A$$ the Minkowski sum of $k$ copies of $A$. A theorem of Shapley, Folkmann and Starr (1969) states that $\frac{1}{k}A[k]$ converges to the convex hull of $A$ in Hausdorff distance as $k$ tends to infinity. Bobkov, Madiman and Wang (2011) conjectured that the volume of $\frac{1}{k}A[k]$ is non-decreasing in $k$, or in other words, in terms of the volume deficit between the convex hull of $A$ and $\frac{1}{k}A[k]$, this convergence is …
Steiner and Schwarz symmetrizations, and their most important relatives, the Minkowski, Minkowski-Blaschke, fiber, inner rotational, and outer rotational symmetrizations, are investigated. The focus is on the convergence of successive symmetrals with respect to a sequence of $i$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Such a sequence is called universal for a family of sets if the successive symmetrals of any set in the family converge to a ball with center at the origin. New universal sequences for the main symmetrizations, for all valid dimensions $i$ of the subspaces, are found, by combini…
We discuss the notions of circumradius, inradius, diameter, and minimum width in generalized Minkowski spaces (that is, with respect to gauges), i.e., we measure the "size" of a given convex set in a finite-dimensional real vector space with respect to another convex set. This is done via formulating some kind of containment problem incorporating homothetic bodies of the latter set or strips bounded by parallel supporting hyperplanes thereof. The paper can be seen as a theoretical starting point for studying metrical problems of sets in generalized Minkowski spaces.
We consider the problem of finding the best function $φ_n:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$ such that for any pair of convex bodies $K,L\in\mathbb{R}^n$ the following Brunn-Minkowski type inequality holds $$ |K+_θL|^\frac{1}{n}\geqφ_n(θ)(|K|^\frac{1}{n}+|L|^\frac{1}{n}), $$ where $K+_θL$ is the $θ$-convolution body of $K$ and $L$. We prove a sharp inclusion of the family of Ball's bodies of an $α$-concave function in its super-level sets in order to provide the best possible function in the range $\left(\frac{3}{4}\right)^n\leqθ\leq1$, characterizing the equality cases.
Let $λ_k$ denote the $k$-th successive minimum of a lattice $L$. We study properties of the lengths of certain bases of $L$. If $v_1, \dots v_n$ is a basis which is reduced in the sense of Minkowski we show that $\lvert v_k \rvert^2 \leq \frac{k}{4} λ_{k}^2$ for $k = 6, 7$, confirming a conjecture of Schürmann, and obtaining the first improvement of a classical bound by Van der Waerden. We construct a sequences of lattices where $\lvert v_n \rvert$ is significantly longer than the longest vector in a Korkin-Zolotarev reduced basis, answering a question of Schürmann. In an appendix joint with L…
We study several of the recent conjectures in regards to the role of symmetry in the inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type, such as the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture of Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang, and the Dimensional Brunn-Minkowski conjecture of Gardner and Zvavitch, in a unified framework. We obtain several new results for these conjectures. We show that when $K\subset L,$ the multiplicative form of the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture holds for Lebesgue measure for $p\geq 1-Cn^{-0.75}$, which improves upon the estimate of Kolesnikov and Milman in the partial case when one body is co…
Let $γ_n$ be the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that for every symmetric convex sets $K,L$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and every $λ\in(0,1)$, $$γ_n(λK+(1-λ)L)^{\frac{1}{n}} \geq λγ_n(K)^{\frac{1}{n}}+(1-λ)γ_n(L)^{\frac{1}{n}},$$ thus settling a problem raised by Gardner and Zvavitch (2010). This is the Gaussian analogue of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Lebesgue measure. We also show that, for a fixed $λ\in(0,1)$, equality is attained if and only if $K=L$.
In this paper, we study the conjecture of Gardner and Zvavitch from \cite{GZ}, which suggests that the standard Gaussian measure $γ$ enjoys $\frac{1}{n}$-concavity with respect to the Minkowski addition of \textbf{symmetric} convex sets. We prove this fact up to a factor of 2: that is, we show that for symmetric convex $K$ and $L,$ $$ γ(λK+(1-λ)L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}\geq λγ(K)^{\frac{1}{2n}}+(1-λ)γ(L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}. $$ Further, we show that under suitable dimension-free uniform bounds on the Hessian of the potential, the log-concavity of even measures can be strengthened to $p$-concavity, with $p>…
The classical Brunn-Minkowski theory studies the geometry of convex bodies in Euclidean space by use of the Minkowski sum. It originated from H. Brunn's thesis in 1887 and H. Minkowski's paper in 1903. Because there is no universally acknowledged definition of the sum of two sets in hyperbolic space, there has been no Brunn-Minkowski theory in hyperbolic space since 1903. In this paper, for any $p>0$ we introduce a sum of two sets in hyperbolic space, and we call it the hyperbolic $p$-sum. Then we develop a Brunn-Minkowski theory in the hyperbolic space by use of our hyperbolic $p$-sum, and we…
In an $n$-dimensional normed space every bounded set has a unique circumball if and only if every set of cardinality two has a unique circumball and if and only if the unit ball of the space is strictly convex. When the symmetry of the norm is dropped, i.e., when the centrally symmetric unit ball is replaced by an arbitrary convex body, then the above three conditions are no longer equivalent. We show for the latter case that every bounded set has a unique circumball if and only if every set of cardinality at most $n$ has a unique circumball. We also give an equivalent condition in terms of th…
The Brunn-Minkowski and Prékopa-Leindler inequalities admit a variety of proofs that are inspired by convexity. Nevertheless, the former holds for compact sets and the latter for integrable functions so it seems that convexity has no special signficance. On the other hand, it was recently shown that the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, specialized to convex sets, follows from a local stochastic dominance for naturally associated random polytopes. We show that for the subclass of $\log$-concave functions and associated stochastic approximations, a similar stochastic dominance underlies the Prékopa-L…
We revisit the problem of characterizing the eigenvalue distribution of the Dirichlet-Laplacian on bounded open sets $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}$ with fractal boundaries. It is well-known from the results of Lapidus and Pomerance \cite{LapPo1} that the asymptotic second term of the eigenvalue counting function can be described in terms of the Minkowski content of the boundary of $Ω$ provided it exists. He and Lapidus \cite{HeLap2} discussed a remarkable extension of this characterization to sets $Ω$ with boundaries that are not necessarily Minkowski measurable. They employed so-called generalized Mink…
