The interrelations between (upper and lower) Minkowski contents and (upper and lower) surface area based contents (S-contents) as well as between their associated dimensions have recently been investigated for general sets in R^d (cf. [3]). While the upper dimensions always coincide and the upper contents are bounded by each other, the bounds obtained in [3] suggest that there is much more flexibility for the lower contents and dimensions.
We show that this is indeed the case. There are sets whose lower S-dimension is strictly smaller than their lower Minkowski dimension. More precisely, given two numbers s, m with 0 < s < m < 1, we construct sets in R^d with lower S-dimension s+d-1 and lower Minkowski dimension m+d-1. In particular, these sets are used to demonstrate that the inequalities obtained in [3] regarding the general relation of these two dimensions are best possible.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of minimal $N$-point Riesz $s$-energy on fractal sets of non-integer dimension, with algebraically dependent contraction ratios. For $s$ bigger than the dimension of the set $A$, we prove the asymptotic behavior of the minimal $N$-point Riesz $s$-energy of $A$ along explicit subsequences, but we show that the general asymptotic behavior does not exist.
Fractal sets, by definition, are non-differentiable, however their dimension can be continuous, differentiable, and arithmetically manipulable as function of their construction parameters. A new arithmetic for fractal dimension of polyadic Cantor sets is introduced by means of properly defining operators for the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The new operators have the usual properties of the corresponding operations with real numbers. The combination of an infinitesimal change of fractal dimension with these arithmetic operators allows the manipulation of fractal dimensi…
Most of the known methods for estimating the fractal dimension of fractal sets are based on the evaluation of a single geometric characteristic, e.g. the volume of its parallel sets. We propose a method involving the evaluation of several geometric characteristics, namely all the intrinsic volumes (i.e.\ volume, surface area, Euler characteristic etc.) of the parallel sets of a fractal. Motivated by recent results on their limiting behaviour, we use these functionals to estimate the fractal dimension of sets from digital images. Simultaneously, we also obtain estimates of the fractal curvature…
A compact set $E\subset {\Bbb R}^d$ is said to be arithmetically thick if there exists a positive integer $n$ so that the $n$-fold arithmetic sum of $E$ has non-empty interior. We prove the arithmetic thickness of $E$, if $E$ is uniformly non-flat, in the sense that there exists $ε_0>0$ such that for $x\in E$ and $0<r\leq {\rm diam}(E)$, $E\cap B(x,r)$ never stays $ε_0r$-close to a hyperplane in ${\Bbb R}^d$. Moreover, we prove the arithmetic thickness for several classes of fractal sets, including self-similar sets, self-conformal sets in ${\Bbb R}^d$ (with $d\geq 2$) and self-affine sets in …
In this paper, we introduce a class of fractals named homogeneous sets based on some measure versions of homogeneity, uniform perfectness and doubling. This fractal class includes all Ahlfors-David regular sets, but most of them are irregular in the sense that they may have different Hausdorff dimensions and packing dimensions. Using Moran sets as main tool, we study the dimensions, bilipschitz embedding and quasi-Lipschitz equivalence of homogeneous fractals.
We outline necessary and sufficient condition to the existence of extrmas of a function on a self-similar set, and we describe discrete gradient algorithm to find the extrema.
We investigate several aspects of the Assouad dimension and the lower dimension, which together form a natural `dimension pair'. In particular, we compute these dimensions for certain classes of self-affine sets and quasi-self-similar sets and study their relationships with other notions of dimension, like the Hausdorff dimension for example. We also investigate some basic properties of these dimensions including their behaviour regarding unions and products and their set theoretic complexity.
Fractal Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures C^f_k(F,.), k = 0, ..., d, are determined for a large class of self-similar sets F in R^d. They arise as weak limits of the appropriately rescaled classical Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures C_k(F_r,.) from geometric measure theory of parallel sets F_r for small distances r>0. Due to self-similarity the limit measures appear to be constant multiples of the normalized Hausdorff measures on F, and the constants agree with the corresponding total fractal curvatures C^f_k(F). This provides information on the 'second order' geometric fine structure of…
This paper uses a connection between bounded remainder sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and cut-and-project sets in $\mathbb{R}$ together with the fact that each one-dimensional Pisot substitution sequence is bounded distance equivalent to some lattice in order to construct several bounded remainder sets with fractal boundary. Moreover it is shown that there are cut-and-project sets being not bounded distance equivalent to each other even if they are locally indistinguishable, more precisely: even if they are contained in the same hull.
We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for Lalley-Gatzouras sets to be uniform disconnected. This enable us to find all Lalley-Gatzouras sets which are quasisymmetrically equivalent to the Cantor ternary set. As another application, we also study the limit behavior of the gap sequence of Lalley-Gatzouras sets.
For self-similar fractals, the Minkowski content and fractal curvature have been introduced as a suitable limit of the geometric characteristics of its parallel sets, i.e., of uniformly thin coatings of the fractal. For some self-conformal sets, the surface and Minkowski contents are known to exist. Conformal iterated function systems are more flexible models than similarities. This work unifies and extends such results to general self-conformal sets in R^d. We prove the rescaled volume, surface area, and curvature of parallel sets converge in a Cesaro average sense of the limit. Fractal Lipsc…
We consider several distances between two sets of points, which are modifications of the Hausdorff metric, and apply them to describe some fractals such as $δ$-quasi-self-similar sets, and some other geometric notions in Euclidean space, such as tilings with quasi-prototiles and patterns with quasi-motifs. For the $δ$-quasi-self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition we obtain the same result as a classical theorem due to P. A. P. Moran. In this paper we try to gaze on fractals in an aspect of their "form" and suggest a few of related questions. Finally, we attempt to inquire an issue …
In this paper, we identify two fractals if and only if they are biLipschitz equivalent. Fix ratio $r,$ for dust-like graph-directed sets with ratio $r$ and integer characteristics, we show that they are rigid in the sense that they are uniquely determined by their Hausdorff dimensions. Using this rigidity theorem, we show that in some class of self-similar sets, two totally disconnected self-similar sets without complete overlaps are biLipschitz equivalent.
We study Minkowski contents and fractal curvatures of arbitrary self-similar tilings (constructed on a feasible open set of an IFS) and the general relations to the corresponding functionals for self-similar sets. In particular, we characterize the situation, when these functionals coincide. In this case, the Minkowski content and the fractal curvatures of a self-similar set can be expressed completely in terms of the volume function or curvature data, respectively, of the generator of the tiling. In special cases such formulas have been obtained recently using tube formulas and complex dimens…
Since the recent dissertation by Steffen Winter, for certain self-similar sets $F$ the growth behaviour of the Minkowski functionals of the parallel sets $F_\varepsilon := \{x\in \mathbb R^d : d(x,F)\leq \varepsilon\}$ as $\varepsilon \downarrow 0$ is known, leading to the notion of fractal curvatures $C_k^f(F)$, $k\in \{0,\ldots,d\}$. The dependence of the growth behaviour on the fractal dimension $s = \dim F$ is exploited, and estimators for $s$ and $C_k^f(F)$ are derived. The performance of these estimators is tested on binary images of self-similar sets.
We study the scaling scenery of Gibbs measures for subshifts of finite type on self-conformal fractals and applications to Falconer's distance set problem and dimensions of projections. Our analysis includes hyperbolic Julia sets, limit sets of Schottky groups and graph-directed self-similar sets.
We show that the fractal curvature measures of invariant sets of one-dimensional conformal iterated function systems satisfying the open set condition exist, if and only if the associated geometric potential function is nonlattice. Moreover, in the nonlattice situation we obtain that the Minkowski content exists and prove that the fractal curvature measures are constant multiples of the $δ$-conformal measure, where $δ$ denotes the Minkowski dimension of the invariant set. For the first fractal curvature measure, this constant factor coincides with the Minkowski content of the invariant set. In…
Algorithmic fractal dimensions quantify the algorithmic information density of individual points and may be defined in terms of Kolmogorov complexity. This work uses these dimensions to bound the classical Hausdorff and packing dimensions of intersections and Cartesian products of fractals in Euclidean spaces. This approach shows that two prominent, fundamental results about the dimension of Borel or analytic sets also hold for arbitrary sets.
We construct Dirac operators and spectral triples for certain, not necessarily self-similar, fractal sets built on curves. Connes' distance formula of noncommutative geometry provides a natural metric on the fractal. To motivate the construction, we address Kigami's measurable Riemannian geometry, which is a metric realization of the Sierpinski gasket as a self-affine space with continuously differentiable geodesics. As a fractal analog of Connes' theorem for a compact Riemmanian manifold, it is proved that the natural metric coincides with Kigami's geodesic metric. This present work extends t…
We construct spectral triples and, in particular, Dirac operators, for the algebra of continuous functions on certain compact metric spaces. The triples are countable sums of triples where each summand is based on a curve in the space. Several fractals, like a finitely summable infinite tree and the Sierpinski gasket, fit naturally within our framework. In these cases, we show that our spectral triples do describe the geodesic distance and the Minkowski dimension as well as, more generally, the complex fractal dimensions of the space. Furthermore, in the case of the Sierpinski gasket, the asso…
This is a book to be published in 2020 by Cambridge University Press (Tracts in Mathematics Series). It focuses on the Assouad dimension of sets and measures in Euclidean space, as well as many variants on the Assouad dimension, including the lower dimension and Assouad spectrum. It considers these notions in the setting of fractal geometry and topics covered include: weak tangents, self-similar sets, self-affine sets, Mandelbrot percolation, limit sets of Kleinian groups, orthogonal projections, distance sets, and Kakeya sets. It also considers applications of these ideas to other areas, incl…
Fractal nests are sets defined as unions of unit $n$-spheres scaled by a sequence of $k^{-α}$ for some $α>0$. In this article we generalise the concept to subsets of such spheres and find the formulas for their box counting dimensions. We introduce some novel classes of parameterised fractal nests and apply these results to compute the dimensions with respect to these parameters. We also show that these dimensions can be seen numerically. These results motivate further research that may explain the unintuitive behaviour of box counting dimensions for nest-type fractals, and in general the clas…
Homogeneous random fractals form a probabilistic extension of self-similar sets with more dependencies than in random recursive constructions. For such random fractals we consider mean values of the Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of their parallel sets for small parallel radii. Under the Uniform Strong Open Set Condition and some further geometric assumptions we show that rescaled limits of these mean values exist as the parallel radius tends to zero. Moreover, integral representations are derived for these limits which extend those known in the deterministic case.
Self-similar sets with open set condition, the linear objects of fractal geometry, have been considered mainly for crystallographic data. Here we introduce new symmetry classes in the plane, based on rotation by irrational angles. Examples without characteristic directions, with strong connectedness and small complexity were found in a computer-assisted search. They are surprising since the rotations are given by rational matrices, and the proof of the open set condition usually requires integer data. We develop a classification of self-similar sets by symmetry class and algebraic numbers. Exa…
