This is a book to be published in 2020 by Cambridge University Press (Tracts in Mathematics Series). It focuses on the Assouad dimension of sets and measures in Euclidean space, as well as many variants on the Assouad dimension, including the lower dimension and Assouad spectrum. It considers these notions in the setting of fractal geometry and topics covered include: weak tangents, self-similar sets, self-affine sets, Mandelbrot percolation, limit sets of Kleinian groups, orthogonal projections, distance sets, and Kakeya sets. It also considers applications of these ideas to other areas, including: embedding theory, number theory, probability theory and functional analysis. It ends with a list of open problems.
We study the collection of microsets of randomly constructed fractals, which in this paper, are referred to as Galton-Watson fractals. This is a model that generalizes Mandelbrot percolation, where Galton-Watson trees (whose offspring distribution is not necessarily binomial) are projected to $\mathbb{R}^d$ by a coding map which arises from an iterated function system (IFS) of similarity maps. We show that for such a random fractal $E$, whenever the underlying IFS satisfies the open set condition, almost surely the Assouad dimension of $E$ is the maximal Hausdorff dimension of a set in $\text{…
The Assouad dimension of a metric space determines its extremal scaling properties. The derived notion of the Assouad spectrum fixes relative scales by a scaling function to obtain interpolation behaviour between the quasi-Assouad and box-counting dimensions. While the quasi-Assouad and Assouad dimensions often coincide, they generally differ in random constructions. In this paper we consider a generalised Assouad spectrum that interpolates between the quasi-Assouad to the Assouad dimension. For common models of random fractal sets we obtain a dichotomy of its behaviour by finding a threshold …
The class of stochastically self-similar sets contains many famous examples of random sets, e.g. Mandelbrot percolation and general fractal percolation. Under the assumption of the uniform open set condition and some mild assumptions on the iterated function systems used, we show that the quasi-Assouad dimension of self-similar random recursive sets is almost surely equal to the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of the set. We further comment on random homogeneous and $V$-variable sets and the removal of overlap conditions.
Let $F \subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$, and let $\dim_{\mathrm{A}}$ stand for Assouad dimension. I prove that $\dim_{\mathrm{A}} π_{e}(F) \geq \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{A}} F,1\}$ for all $e \in S^{1}$ outside of a set of Hausdorff dimension zero. This is a strong variant of Marstrand's projection theorem for Assouad dimension, whose analogue is not true for other common notions of fractal dimension, such as Hausdorff or packing dimension.
We introduce the notion of tiling spaces for metric spaces. The class of tiling spaces contains the Euclidean spaces, the middle-third Cantor set, and various self-similar spaces appearing in fractal geometry. For doubling tiling spaces, we characterize metric subspaces whose Assouad dimension coincides with that of the whole space.
We introduce a new dimension spectrum motivated by the Assouad dimension; a familiar notion of dimension which, for a given metric space, returns the minimal exponent $α\geq 0$ such that for any pair of scales $0<r<R$, any ball of radius $R$ may be covered by a constant times $(R/r)^α$ balls of radius $r$. To each $θ\in (0,1)$, we associate the appropriate analogue of the Assouad dimension with the restriction that the two scales $r$ and $R$ used in the definition satisfy $\log R/\log r = θ$. The resulting `dimension spectrum' (as a function of $θ$) thus gives finer geometric information regar…
In this paper, we first show that for all four non-negative real numbers, there exists a Cantor ultrametric space whose Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, upper box dimension, and Assouad dimension are equal to given four numbers, respectively. Next, by constructing topological embeddings of an arbitrary compact metrizable space into the Gromov--Hausdorff space using a direct sum of metrics spaces, we prove that the set of all compact metric spaces possessing prescribed topological dimension, and four dimensions explained above, and the set of all compact ultrametric spaces are path-conne…
In this paper we propose a new model of random graph directed fractals that extends the current well-known model of random graph directed iterated function systems, $V$-variable attractors, and fractal and Mandelbrot percolation. We study its dimensional properties for similarities with and without overlaps. In particular we show that for the two classes of $1$-variable and $\infty$-variable random graph directed attractors we introduce, the Hausdorff and upper box counting dimension coincide almost surely, irrespective of overlap. Under the additional assumption of the uniform strong separati…
In this paper, we define new fractal dimensions of a metric space in order to calculate the roughness of a set on a large scale. These fractal dimensions are called upper zeta dimension and lower zeta dimension. The upper zeta dimension is an extension of the zeta dimension introduced by Doty, Gu, Lutz, Elvira, Mayordomo, and Moser. We show that the upper zeta dimension is always a lower bound for the Assouad dimension. Moreover, we apply the upper zeta dimension to the existence of weak arithmetic patches of a given set. Arithmetic patches are higher dimensionalized arithmetic progressions. A…
We prove that, up to topological conjugacy, every Smale space admits an Ahlfors regular Bowen measure. Bowen's construction of Markov partitions implies that Smale spaces are factors of topological Markov chains. The latter are equipped with Parry's measure which is Ahlfors regular. By extending Bowen's construction we create a tool for transferring the Ahlfors regularity of the Parry measure down to the Bowen measure of the Smale space. An essential part of our method uses a refined notion of approximation graphs over compact metric spaces. Moreover, we obtain new estimates for the Hausdorff,…
We investigate the relationships between several classical notions in arithmetic combinatorics and geometry including: the presence (or lack of) arithmetic progressions (or patches in dimensions $\geq 2$); the structure of tangent sets; and the Assouad dimension. We begin by extending a recent result of Dyatlov and Zahl by showing that a set cannot contain arbitrarily large arithmetic progressions (patches) if it has Assouad dimension strictly smaller than the ambient spatial dimension. Seeking a partial converse, we go on to prove that having Assouad dimension equal to the ambient spatial dim…
In 1984 Bedford and McMullen independently introduced a family of self-affine sets now known as \emph{Bedford-McMullen carpets}. Their work stimulated a lot of research in the areas of fractal geometry and non-conformal dynamics. In this survey article we discuss some aspects of Bedford-McMullen carpets, focusing mostly on dimension theory.

Self-similar sets with open set condition, the linear objects of fractal geometry, have been considered mainly for crystallographic data. Here we introduce new symmetry classes in the plane, based on rotation by irrational angles. Examples without characteristic directions, with strong connectedness and small complexity were found in a computer-assisted search. They are surprising since the rotations are given by rational matrices, and the proof of the open set condition usually requires integer data. We develop a classification of self-similar sets by symmetry class and algebraic numbers. Exa…
Noncommutative geometry provides a framework, via the construction of spectral triples, for the study of the geometry of certain classes of fractals. Many fractals are constructed as natural limits of certain sets with a simpler structure: for instance, the Sierpiński is the limit of finite graphs consisting of various affine images of an equilateral triangle. It is thus natural to ask whether the spectral triples, constructed on a class of fractals called piecewise $C^1$-fractal curves, are indeed limits, in an appropriate sense, of spectral triples on the approximating sets. We answer this q…
