In this paper, we first introduce a new concept of {\it dual quermassintegral sum function} of two star bodies and establish Minkowski's type inequality for dual quermassintegral sum of mixed intersection bodies, which is a general form of the Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies. Then, we give the Aleksandrov--Fenchel inequality and the Brunn--Minkowski inequality for mixed intersection bodies and some related results. Our results present, for intersection bodies, all dual inequalities for Lutwak's mixed prosection bodies inequalities.
In this paper we establish Minkowski inequality and Brunn--Minkowski inequality for $p$-quermassintegral differences of convex bodies. Further, we give Minkowski inequality and Brunn--Minkowski inequality for quermassintegral differences of mixed projection bodies.
We provide general estimates which compare the quermassintegrals of a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with the averages of the corresponding quermassintegrals of the $k$-codimensional sections of $K$ over $G_{n,n-k}$. An example is the inequality $$α_{n,k,j}\frac{W_j(K)}{|K|}\leq\int_{G_{n,n-k}}\frac{W_j(K\cap F)}{|K\cap F|}dν_{n,n-k}(F)\leq β_{n,k,j}\frac{W_j(K)}{|K|}$$ where the constants $α_{n,k,j}$ and $β_{n,k,j}$ depend only on $n,k$ and $j$, which holds true for any centrally symmetric convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ and any $0\leq j\leq n-k-1\leq n-1$. Using these estimates we obt…
We extend to a functional setting the concept of quermassintegrals, well-known within the Minkowski theory of convex bodies. We work in the class of quasi-concave functions defined on the Euclidean space, and with the hierarchy of their subclasses given by $α$-concave functions. In this setting, we investigate the most relevant features of functional quermassintegrals, and we show they inherit the basic properties of their classical geometric counterpart. As a first main result, we prove a Steiner-type formula which holds true by choosing a suitable functional equivalent of the unit ball. Then…
Let $d \ge 2$, and let $K \subset {\Bbb{R}}^d$ be a convex body containing the origin $0$ in its interior. In a previous paper we have proved the following. The body $K$ is $0$-symmetric if and only if the following holds. For each $ω\in S^{d-1}$, we have that the $(d-1)$-volume of the intersection of $K$ and an arbitrary hyperplane, with normal $ω$, attains its maximum if the hyperplane contains $0$. An analogous theorem, for $1$-dimensional sections and $1$-volumes, has been proved long ago by Hammer (\cite{H}). In this paper we deal with the ($(d-2)$-dimensional) surface area, or with lower…
We use Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for quermassintegrals to deduce a family of inequalities of Poincaré type on the unit sphere and on the boundary of smooth convex bodies in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
In this paper, we introduce first the mixed affine quermassintegrals. The Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality for the mixed affine quermassintegrals is established. As an application, the Minkowski, Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for the mixed affine quermassintegrals are also derived.
For any $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ finite with $0\in I$, we provide a characterization of those tuples $(ω_i)_{i\in I}$ of positive numbers which are dual quermaßintegrals of two star bodies. It turns out that this problem is related to the moment problem. Based on this relation we also get new inequalities for the dual quermaßintegrals. Moreover, the above characterization will be the key tool in order to investigate structural properties of the set of roots of dual Steiner polynomials of star bodies.
A body $K$ is called polynomially integrable if its parallel section function $V_{n-1}(K\cap\{ξ^\perp+tξ\})$ is a polynomial of $t$ (on its support) for every $ξ$. A complete characterization of such bodies was given recently. Here we obtain a generalization of these results in the setting of dual quermassintegrals. We also address the associated smoothness issues.
In this paper, the functional Quermassintegrals of log-concave functions in $\mathbb R^n$ are discussed, we obtain the integral expression of the $i$-th functional mixed Quermassintegrals, which are similar to the integral expression of the $i$-th Quermassintegrals of convex bodies.
Lutwak's volume inequalities for polar projection bodies of all orders are generalized to polarizations of Minkowski valuations generated by even, zonal measures on the Euclidean unit sphere. This is based on analogues of mixed projection bodies for such Minkowski valuations and a generalization of the notion of centroid bodies. A new integral representation is used to single out Lutwak's inequalities as the strongest among these families of inequalities, which in turn are related to a conjecture on affine quermassintegrals. In the dual setting, a generalization of volume inequalities for inte…
We show a reverse isoperimetric inequality within the class of relative outer parallel bodies, with respect to a general convex body $E$, along with its equality condition. Based on the convexity of the sequence of quermassintegrals of Minkowski sums we also prove further inequalities.
The affine quermassintegrals associated to a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are affine-invariant analogues of the classical intrinsic volumes from the Brunn-Minkowski theory, and thus constitute a central pillar of affine convex geometry. They were introduced in the 1980's by E. Lutwak, who conjectured that among all convex bodies of a given volume, the $k$-th affine quermassintegral is minimized precisely on the family of ellipsoids. The known cases $k=1$ and $k=n-1$ correspond to the classical Blaschke-Santaló and Petty projection inequalities, respectively. In this work we confirm Lutwak's c…
A unified approach used to generalize classical Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities to Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities, called the Lp transference principle, is refined in this paper. As illustrations of the effectiveness and practicability of this method, several new Lp Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities concerning the mixed volume, moment of inertia, quermassintegral, projection body and capacity are established.
The dual Minkowski problem for even data asks what are the necessary and sufficient conditions on an even prescribed measure on the unit sphere for it to be the $q$-th dual curvature measure of an origin-symmetric convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$. A full solution to this is given when $1 < q < n$. The necessary and sufficient condition is an explicit measure concentration condition. A variational approach is used, where the functional is the sum of a dual quermassintegral and an entropy integral. The proof requires two crucial estimates. The first is an estimate of the entropy integral proved usi…
We provide general inequalities that compare the surface area S(K) of a convex body K in ${\mathbb R}^n$ to the minimal, average or maximal surface area of its hyperplane or lower dimensional projections. We discuss the same questions for all the quermassintegrals of K. We examine separately the dependence of the constants on the dimension in the case where K is in some of the classical positions or K is a projection body. Our results are in the spirit of the hyperplane problem, with sections replaced by projections and volume by surface area.
We investigate geometrical properties and inequalities satisfied by the complex difference body, in the sense of studying which of the classical ones for the difference body have an analog in the complex framework. Among others we give an equivalent expression for the support function of the complex difference body and prove that, unlike the classical case, the dimension of the complex difference body depends on the position of the body with respect to the complex structure of the vector space. We use spherical harmonics to characterize the bodies for which the complex difference body is a bal…
We prove several stability and volume difference inequalities for projections of convex bodies and apply them to prove a hyperplane inequality for surface area of projection bodies.
Very recently J. Kotrbaty has proven general inequalities for translation invariant smooth valuations formally analogous to the Hodge- Riemann bilinear relations in the Kahler geometry. The goal of this note is to apply Kotrbaty's theorem to obtain a few apparently new inequalities for mixed volumes of convex bodies.
The classical Loomis-Whitney inequality and the uniform cover inequality of Bollobás and Thomason provide lower bounds for the volume of a compact set in terms of its lower dimensional coordinate projections. We provide further extensions of these inequalities in the setting of convex bodies. We also establish the corresponding dual inequalities for coordinate sections; these uniform cover inequalities for sections may be viewed as extensions of Meyer's dual Loomis-Whitney inequality.
We study upper bounds on the number of lattice points for convex bodies having their centroid at the origin. For the family of simplices as well as in the planar case we obtain best possible results. For arbitrary convex bodies we provide an upper bound, which extends the centrally symmetric case and which, in particular, shows that the centroid assumption is indeed much more restrictive than an assumption on the number of interior lattice points even for the class of lattice polytopes.
We obtain a new extension of Rogers-Shephard inequality providing an upper bound for the volume of the sum of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. We also give lower bounds for the volume of the $k$-th limiting convolution body of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. Special attention is paid to the $(n-1)$-th limiting convolution body, for which a sharp inequality, which is equality only when $K=-L$ is a simplex, is given. Since the $n$-th limiting convolution body of $K$ and $-K$ is the polar projection body of $K$, these inequalities can be viewed as an extension of Zhang's inequality.
We prove several inequalities estimating the distance between volumes of two bodies in terms of the maximal or minimal difference between areas of sections or projections of these bodies. We also provide extensions in which volume is replaced by an arbitrary measure.
We prove sharp inequalities for the average number of affine diameters through the points of a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. These inequalities hold if $K$ is either a polytope or of dimension two. An example shows that the proof given in the latter case does not extend to higher dimensions.
We study the class of (locally) anti-blocking bodies as well as some associated classes of convex bodies. For these bodies, we prove geometric inequalities regarding volumes and mixed volumes, including Godberson's conjecture, near-optimal bounds on Mahler volumes, Saint-Raymond-type inequalities on mixed volumes, and reverse Kleitman inequalities for mixed volumes. We apply our results to the combinatorics of posets and prove Sidorenko-type inequalities for linear extensions of pairs of 2-dimensional posets. The results rely on some elegant decompositions of differences of anti-blocking bodie…
This article is a survey of recent results on slicing inequalities for convex bodies. The focus is on the setting of arbitrary measures in place of volume.
We prove the validity of the $p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the intrinsic volume $V_k$, $k=2,\dots, n-1$, of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in a neighborhood of the unit ball, for $0\le p<1$. We also prove that this inequality does not hold true on the entire class of convex bodies of $\mathbb{R}^n$, when $p$ is sufficiently close to $0$.
Analogues of the classical inequalities from the Brunn-Minkowski theory for rotation intertwining additive maps of convex bodies are developed. Analogues are also proved of inequalities from the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory for intertwining additive maps of star bodies. These inequalities provide generalizations of results for projection and intersection bodies. As a corollary, a new Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained for the volume of polar projection bodies.
We prove a generalization of the hyperplane inequality for intersection bodies, where volume is replaced by an arbitrary measure $μ$ with even continuous density and sections are of arbitrary dimension $n-k,\ 1\le k <n.$ If $K$ is a generalized $k$-intersection body, then $$μ(K)\,\leq\,\frac{n}{n-k}c_{n,k}\max_{H} μ(K\cap H) \vol_n(K)^{k/n}.$$ Here $c_{n,k} = |B_2^n|^{(n-k)/n}/|B_2^{n-k}|<1,$ $|B_2^n|$ is the volume of the unit Euclidean ball, and maximum is taken over all $(n-k)$-dimensional subspaces of $\R^n.$ The constant is optimal, and for each intersection body the inequality holds for …
We consider a generalization of the hyperplane problem to arbitrary measures in place of volume and to sections of lower dimensions. We prove this generalization for unconditional convex bodies and for duals of bodies with bounded volume ratio. We also prove it for arbitrary symmetric convex bodies under the condition that the dimension of sections is less than $λn$ for some $λ\in (0,1).$ The constant depends only on $λ.$ Finally, we show that the behavior of the minimal sections for some measures may be different from the case of volume.
We prove new Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities and new affine isoperimetric inequalities for mixed $p$-affine surface areas. We introduce a new class of bodies, the illumination surface bodies, and establish some of their properties. We show, for instance, that they are not necessarily convex. We give geometric interpretations of $L_p$ affine surface areas, mixed $p$-affine surface areas and other functionals via these bodies. The surprising new element is that not necessarily convex bodies provide the tool for these interpretations.
It has been proved that the sup-norm of the Radon transform of an arbitrary probability density on an origin-symmetric convex body of volume 1 is bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on the dimension. In this note we extend this result to the derivatives of the Radon transform. We also prove a comparison theorem for these derivatives.
In this paper, we introduce several mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas for multiple convex bodies for all $p\neq -n$. Our definitions are motivated from an equivalent formula for the mixed $p$-affine surface area. Some properties, such as the affine invariance, for these mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas are proved. Related inequalities, such as, Alexander-Fenchel type inequality, Santaló style inequality, affine isoperimetric inequalities, and cyclic inequalities are established. Moreover, we also study some properties and inequalities for the $i$-th mixed $L_p$ geominimal surface areas …
The Alesker-Bernig-Schuster theorem asserts that each irreducible representation of the special orthogonal group appears with multiplicity at most one as a subrepresentation of the space of continuous translation-invariant valuations with fixed degree of homogeneity. Moreover, the theorem describes in terms of highest weights which irreducible representations appear with multiplicity one. In this paper, we present a refinement of this result, namely the explicit construction of a highest weight vector in each irreducible subrepresentation. We then describe how important natural operations on v…
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
We establish a family of isoperimetric inequalities for sets that interpolate between intersection bodies and dual Lp centroid bodies. This provides a bridge between the Busemann intersection inequality and the Lutwak--Zhang inequality. The approach depends on new empirical versions of these inequalities.
In this paper we consider the isoperimetric profile of convex cylinders $K\times\mathbb{R}^q$, where $K$ is an $m$-dimensional convex body, and of cylindrically bounded convex sets, i.e, those with a relatively compact orthogonal projection over some hyperplane of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, asymptotic to a right convex cylinder of the form $K\times\mathbb{R}$, with $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Results concerning the concavity of the isoperimetric profile, existence of isoperimetric regions, and geometric descriptions of isoperimetric regions for small and large volumes are obtained.
