We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
We consider the problem of lower bounding a generalized Minkowski measure of subsets of a convex body with a log-concave probability measure, conditioned on the set size. A bound is given in terms of diameter and set size, which is sharp for all set sizes, dimensions, and norms. In the case of uniform density a stronger theorem is shown which is also sharp.
We establish a family of isoperimetric inequalities for sets that interpolate between intersection bodies and dual Lp centroid bodies. This provides a bridge between the Busemann intersection inequality and the Lutwak--Zhang inequality. The approach depends on new empirical versions of these inequalities.
In recent years, it has been shown that some classical inequalities follow from a local stochastic dominance for naturally associated random polytopes. We strengthen planar isoperimetric inequalities by attaching a stochastic model to some classical inequalities, such as Mahler's Theorem, and a reverse Lutwak-Zhang inequality, the polar for $L_p$ centroid bodies. In particular, we obtain the dual counterpart to a result of Bisztriczky-Böröczky.
In a recent paper A. Cianchi, N. Fusco, F. Maggi, and A. Pratelli have shown that, in the Gauss space, a set of given measure and almost minimal Gauss boundary measure is necessarily close to be a half-space. Using only geometric tools, we extend their result to all symmetric log-concave measures μon the real line. We give sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequalities and prove that among sets of given measure and given asymmetry (distance to half line, i.e. distance to sets of minimal perimeter), the intervals or complements of intervals have minimal perimeter.
Bi-log-concavity of probability measures is a univariate extension of the notion of log-concavity that has been recently proposed in a statistical literature. Among other things, it has the nice property from a modelisation perspective to admit some multimodal distributions, while preserving some nice features of log-concave measures. We compute the isoperimetric constant for a bi-log-concave measure, extending a property available for log-concave measures. This implies that bi-log-concave measures have exponentially decreasing tails. Then we show that the convolution of a bi-log-concave measu…
We show that the conjecture of Kannan, Lovász, and Simonovits on isoperimetric properties of convex bodies and log-concave measures, is true for log-concave measures of the form $ρ(|x|_B)dx$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $ρ(t,|x|_B) dx$ on $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$, where $|x|_B$ is the norm associated to any convex body $B$ already satisfying the conjecture. In particular, the conjecture holds for convex bodies of revolution.
Star-shaped bodies are an important nonconvex generalization of convex bodies (e.g., linear programming with violations). Here we present an efficient algorithm for sampling a given star-shaped body. The complexity of the algorithm grows polynomially in the dimension and inverse polynomially in the fraction of the volume taken up by the kernel of the star-shaped body. The analysis is based on a new isoperimetric inequality. Our main technical contribution is a tool for proving such inequalities when the domain is not convex. As a consequence, we obtain a polynomial algorithm for computing the …
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for probability measures $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with density proportional to $\exp(-ϕ(λ| x|))$, where $|x|$ is the euclidean norm on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $ϕ$ is a non-decreasing convex function. It applies in particular when $ϕ(x)=x^α$ with $α\ge1$. Under mild assumptions on $ϕ$, the inequality is dimension-free if $λ$ is chosen such that the covariance of $μ$ is the identity.
The central limit theorem for convex bodies says that with high probability the marginal of an isotropic log-concave distribution along a random direction is close to a Gaussian, with the quantitative difference determined asymptotically by the Cheeger/Poincare/KLS constant. Here we propose a generalized CLT for marginals along random directions drawn from any isotropic log-concave distribution; namely, for $x,y$ drawn independently from isotropic log-concave densities $p,q$, the random variable $\langle x,y\rangle$ is close to Gaussian. Our main result is that this generalized CLT is quantita…
In this paper we present new versions of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for different classes of measures and sets. We show that the inequality \[ μ(λA + (1-λ)B)^{1/n} \geq λμ(A)^{1/n} + (1-λ)μ(B)^{1/n} \] holds true for an unconditional product measure $μ$ with decreasing density and a pair of unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that the above inequality is true for any unconditional $\log$-concave measure $μ$ and unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we prove that the inequality is true for a symmetric $\log$-concave measu…
We provide a sharp rate of convergence in the central limit theorem for random vectors with an unconditional, log-concave density. The argument relies on analysis of the Neumann laplacian on convex domains and on the theory of optimal transportation of measures.
The famous Minkowski inequality provides a sharp lower bound for the mixed volume $V(K,M[n-1])$ of two convex bodies $K,M\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of powers of the volumes of the individual bodies $K$ and $M$. The special case where $K$ is the unit ball yields the isoperimetric inequality. In the plane, Betke and Weil (1991) found a sharp upper bound for the mixed area of $K$ and $M$ in terms of the perimeters of $K$ and $M$. We extend this result to general dimensions by proving a sharp upper bound for the mixed volume $V(K,M[n-1])$ in terms of the mean width of $K$ and the surface area o…
In the paper we study closures of classes of log--concave measures under taking weak limits, linear transformations and tensor products. We consider what uniform measures on convex bodies can one obtain starting from some class $\mathcal{K}$. In particular we prove that if one starts from one--dimensional log--concave measures, one obtains no non--trivial uniform mesures on convex bodies.
We present a short proof of Klartag's central limit theorem for convex bodies, using only the most classical facts about log-concave functions. An appendix is included where we give the proof that thin shell implies CLT. The paper is accessible to anyone.
This is a continuation of our previous work 0712.4092. It is well known that various isoperimetric inequalities imply their functional ``counterparts'', but in general this is not an equivalence. We show that under certain convexity assumptions (e.g. for log-concave probability measures in Euclidean space), the latter implication can in fact be reversed for very general inequalities, generalizing a reverse form of Cheeger's inequality due to Buser and Ledoux. We develop a coherent single framework for passing between isoperimetric inequalities, Orlicz-Sobolev functional inequalities and capaci…
We study the expected volume of random polytopes generated by taking the convex hull of independent identically distributed points from a given distribution. We show that for log-concave distributions supported on convex bodies, we need at least exponentially many (in dimension) samples for the expected volume to be significant and that super-exponentially many samples suffice for concave measures when their parameter of concavity is positive.
Brascamp--Lieb-type, weighted Poincaré-type and related analytic inequalities are studied for multidimensional Cauchy distributions and more general $κ$-concave probability measures (in the hierarchy of convex measures). In analogy with the limiting (infinite-dimensional log-concave) Gaussian model, the weighted inequalities fully describe the measure concentration and large deviation properties of this family of measures. Cheeger-type isoperimetric inequalities are investigated similarly, giving rise to a common weight in the class of concave probability measures under consideration.
Let $C$ and $K$ be centrally symmetric convex bodies of volume $1$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We provide upper bounds for the multi-integral expression \begin{equation*}\|{\bf t}\|_{C^s,K}=\int_{C}\cdots\int_{C}\Big\|\sum_{j=1}^st_jx_j\Big\|_K\,dx_1\cdots dx_s\end{equation*} in the case where $C$ is isotropic. Our approach provides an alternative proof of the sharp lower bound, due to Gluskin and V. Milman, for this quantity. We also present some applications to "randomized" vector balancing problems.
For a convex body $K\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ the mean distance $Δ(K)=\mathbb{E}|X_1-X_2|$ is the expected Euclidean distance of two independent and uniformly distributed random points $X_1,X_2\in K$. Optimal lower and upper bounds for ratio between $Δ(K)$ and the first intrinsic volume $V_1(K)$ of $K$ (normalized mean width) are derived and degenerate extremal cases are discussed. The argument relies on Riesz's rearrangement inequality and the solution of an optimization problem for powers of concave functions. The relation with results known from the existing literature is reviewed in detail.
In the first part we study deviation of a polynomial from its mathematical expectation. This deviation can be estimated from above by Carbery--Wright inequality, so we investigate estimates of the deviation from below. We obtain such estimates in two different cases: for Gaussian measures and a polynomial of an arbitrary degree and for an arbitrary log-concave measure but only for polynomials of the second degree. In the second part we deals with isoperimetric inequality and the Poincaré inequality for probability measures on the real line that are images of the uniform distributions on convex…
