We discuss isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets. These include the classical isoperimetric inequality and that of Brunn-Minkowski, Blaschke-Santalo, Busemann-Petty and their various extensions. We show that many such inequalities admit stronger randomized forms in the following sense: for natural families of associated random convex sets one has stochastic dominance for various functionals such as volume, surface area, mean width and others. By laws of large numbers, these randomized versions recover the classical inequalities. We give an overview of when such stochastic dominance arises and its applications in convex geometry and probability.
This article treats isoperimetric inequalities for integral currents in the setting of stratified nilpotent Lie groups equipped with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. We prove that for each such group there is a dimension in which no Euclidean isoperimetric inequality is admitted, while in all smaller dimensions strictly Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities are satisfied.
A celebrated theorem of Kanai states that quasi-isometries preserve isoperimetric inequalities between uniform Riemannian manifolds (with positive injectivity radius) and graphs. Our main result states that we can study the (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in a Riemann surface by using a graph related to it, even if the surface has injectivity radius zero (this graph is inspired in Kanai's graph, but it is different from it). We also present an application relating Gromov boundary and isoperimetric inequality.
The classical isoperimetric inequality can be extended to a general normed plane. In the Euclidean plane, the defect in the isoperimetric inequality can be calculated in terms of the signed areas of some singular sets. In this paper we consider normed planes with smooth by parts unit balls and the corresponding class of admissible curves. For such an admissible curve, the singular sets are defined as projections in the subspaces of symmetric and constant width admissible curves. In this context, we obtain some improved isoperimetric inequalities whose equality hold for symmetric or constant wi…
In this note we apply the billiard technique to deduce some results on Viterbo's conjectured inequality between volume of a convex body and its symplectic capacity. We show that the product of a permutohedron and a simplex (properly related to each other) delivers equality in Viterbo's conjecture. Using this result as well as previously known equality cases, we prove some special cases of Viterbo's conjecture and interpret them as isoperimetric-like inequalities for billiard trajectories.
In this paper we construct a large family of examples of subsets of Euclidean space that support a 1-Poincaré inequality yet have empty interior. These examples are formed from an iterative process that involves removing well-behaved domains, or more precisely, domains whose complements are uniform in the sense of Martio and Sarvas. While existing arguments rely on explicit constructions of Semmes families of curves, we include a new way of obtaining Poincaré inequalities through the use of relative isoperimetric inequalities, after Korte and Lahti. To do so, we further introduce the notion of…
It is shown that every even, zonal measure on the Euclidean unit sphere gives rise to an isoperimetric inequality for sets of finite perimeter which directly implies the classical Euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The strongest member of this large family of inequalities is shown to be the only affine invariant one among them - the Petty projection inequality. As an application, a family of sharp Sobolev inequalities for functions of bounded variation is obtained, each of which is stronger than the classical Sobolev inequality. Moreover, corresponding families of Lp isoperimetric and Sobolev…
In this paper, we prove a class of weighted isoperimetric inequalities for bounded domains in hyperbolic space by using the isoperimetric inequality with log-convex density in Euclidean space. As a consequence, we remove the horo-convex assumption of domains in a weighted isoperimetric inequality proved by Scheuer-Xia. Furthermore, we prove weighted isoperimetric inequalities for star-shaped domains in warped product manifolds. Particularly, we obtain a weighted isoperimetric inequality for star-shaped hypersurfaces lying outside a certain radial coordinate slice in the anti-de Sitter-Schwarzs…
In this paper, we develop a basic theory of Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas for convex and $s$-concave functions. We prove some basic properties for these newly introduced functional affine invariants and establish related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities as well as functional Santaló type inequalities.
We prove that on an essentially non-branching $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ space, if a geodesic ball has a volume lower bound and satisfies some additional geometric conditions, then in a smaller geodesic ball (in a quantified sense) we have an estimate on the isoperimetric constants.
In recent years, it has been shown that some classical inequalities follow from a local stochastic dominance for naturally associated random polytopes. We strengthen planar isoperimetric inequalities by attaching a stochastic model to some classical inequalities, such as Mahler's Theorem, and a reverse Lutwak-Zhang inequality, the polar for $L_p$ centroid bodies. In particular, we obtain the dual counterpart to a result of Bisztriczky-Böröczky.
In this paper we adapt the well-estabilished $Γ$-calculus techniques to the context of $RCD(K,\infty)$ spaces, proving Bobkov's local isoperimetric inequality and, when $K$ is positive, the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality in this class of spaces. The proof relies on the measure-valued $Γ_2$ operator introduced by Savaré.
We prove a pair of sharp reverse isoperimetric inequalities for domains in nonpositively curved surfaces: (1) metric disks centered at the vertex of a Euclidean cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved disks of the same perimeter and the same total curvature; (2) geodesic triangles in a Euclidean (resp. hyperbolic) cone of angle at least $2π$ have minimal area among all nonpositively curved geodesic triangles (resp. all geodesic triangles of curvature at most $-1$) with the same side lengths and angles.
We prove that if a quasiconvex subset $X$ of a metric space $Y$ has finite Nagata dimension and is Lipschitz $k$-connected or admits Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities up to dimension $k$ for some $k$ then $X$ is isoperimetrically undistorted in $Y$ up to dimension $k+1$. This generalizes and strengthens a recent result of the third named author and has several consequences and applications. It yields for example that in spaces of finite Nagata dimension, Lipschitz connectedness implies Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities, and Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities imply coning inequalities. …
We consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in an unbounded convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, without assuming any further regularity on the boundary of $C$. Motivated by an example of an unbounded convex body with null isoperimetric profile, we introduce the concept of unbounded convex body with uniform geometry. We then provide a handy characterization of the uniform geometry property and, by exploiting the notion of asymptotic cylinder of $C$, we prove existence of isoperimetric regions in a generalized sense. By an approximation argument we…
For a general family of graphs on $\mathbb{Z}^n$, we translate the edge-isoperimetric problem into a continuous isoperimetric problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We then solve the continuous isoperimetric problem using the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and Minkowski's theorem on Mixed Volumes. This translation allows us to conclude, under a reasonable assumption about the discrete problem, that the shapes of the optimal sets in the discrete problem approach the shape of the optimal set in the continuous problem as the size of the set grows. The solution is the zonotope defined as the Minkowski sum of the …
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
We prove an inequality, valid on any finitely generated group with a fixed finite symmetric generating set, involving the growth of successive balls, and the average length of an element in a ball. It generalizes recent improvements of the Coulhon Saloff-Coste inequality. We reformulate the inequality in terms of the Følner function; in the case the finitely generated group is amenable with exponential growth, this allows us to express the best possible (outer) constant in the Coulhon Saloff-Coste isoperimetric inequality with the help of a formula involving the growth rate and the asymptotic …
Klartag recently gave a beautiful alternative proof of the isoperimetric inequalities of Levy-Gromov, Bakry-Ledoux, Bayle and E. Milman on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Klartag's approach is based on a generalization of the localization method (so-called needle decompositions) in convex geometry, inspired also by optimal transport theory. Cavalletti and Mondino subsequently generalized the localization method, in a different way more directly along optimal transport theory, to essentially non-branching metric measure spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension condition. This class in particula…
We prove that the results regarding the Isoperimetric inequality and Cheeger constant formulated in terms of the Minkowski content, obtained by the authors in previous papers in the framework of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces verifying the local curvature dimension condition, also hold in the stronger formulation in terms of the perimeter.
We prove an inequality for submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, which relates the geometry of a submanifold to the measure of the geodesics in the ambient space which it intersects. For hypersurfaces, this gives an extension of Banchoff and Pohl's isoperimetric inequality to spaces of non-positive curvature. We also prove a modified version of Croke's isoperimetric inequality for hypersurfaces immersed in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and a sharp, quantitative version of an isoperimetric inequality of Yau in spaces of negative curvature. We discuss the relationship between these results, and…
