For an even positive integer $n$, we study rank-one Eisenstein cohomology of the split orthogonal group ${\rm O}(2n+2)$ over a totally real number field $F.$ This is used to prove a rationality result for the ratios of successive critical values of degree-$2n$ Langlands $L$-functions associated to the group ${\rm GL}_1 \times {\rm O}(2n)$ over $F$. The case $n=2$ specializes to classical results of Shimura on the special values of Rankin - Selberg $L$-functions attached to a pair of Hilbert modular forms.
The paper investigates a significant part of the automorphic, in fact of the so-called Eisenstein cohomology of split odd orthogonal groups over Q. The main result provides a description of residual and regular Eisenstein cohomology classes for maximal parabolic Q-subgroups in case of generic cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of their Levi subgroups. That is, such identifying necessary conditions on these latter representations as well as on the complex parameters in order for the associated Eisenstein series to possibly yield non-trivial classes in the automorphic cohomology.
We set up a general framework to compute the exact multiplicity with which certain automorphic representations appear in both the cuspidal and Eisenstein cohomology of locally symmetric spaces. We apply this machinery to Eisenstein series on $GSp_4$ and split $G_2$. In the case of $G_2$, we will also obtain new information about the archimedean components of certain CAP representations using Arthur's conjectures.
The aim of this article is to study rank-one Eisenstein cohomology for the group GL(N)/F, where F is a totally real field extension of Q. This is then used to prove rationality results for ratios of successive critical values for Rankin-Selberg L-functions for GL(n) x GL(n') over F with the parity condition that nn' is even. The key idea is to interpret Langlands's constant term theorem in terms of Eisenstein cohomology.
The automorphic cohomology of a connected reductive algebraic group defined over Q decomposes as a direct algebraic sum of cuspidal and Eisenstein cohomology. In the present paper we construct regular Eisenstein cohomology classes for congruence subgroups of a rational form G of Q-rank 2 of SO(n,2).
This is an announcement of results on rank-one Eisenstein cohomology of GL(N), with N > 1 an odd integer, and algebraicity theorems for ratios of successive critical values of certain Rankin-Selberg L-functions for GL(n) x GL(n') when n is even and n' is odd.
This brief article gives an alternative interpretation, based on a theorem of Berkovich, of the Eisenstein classes in the cohomology of Shimura varieties, used in forthcoming work of the author with K. W. Lan, R. Taylor, and J. Thorne.
We give a formula for the Eisenstein cohomology of local systems on the partial compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties given by rank 1 degenerations. For genus 2 we give a formula for the full Eisenstein cohomology.
In this article, Eisenstein cohomology of the arithmetic group $G_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any finite dimensional highest weight irreducible representation has been determined. We accomplish this by studying the cohomology of the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification.
In his paper, 'On torsion in the cohomology of locally symmetric varieties', Peter Scholze has introduced a new, purely topological method to construct the cohomology classes on arithmetic quotients of symmetric spaces of rational reductive groups originating from the cohomology of the similar quotients of Levi subgroups of maximal parabolic subgroups. We extend this construction beyond the cases he considers, and, in the complex case, to the cohomology of local systems.
In this article, several cohomology spaces associated to the arithmetic groups $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any highest weight representation $\mathcal{M}_λ$ have been computed, where $λ$ denotes their highest weight. Consequently, we obtain detailed information of their Eisenstein cohomology with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. When $\mathcal{M}_λ$ is not self dual, the Eisenstein cohomology coincides with the cohomology of the underlying arithmetic group with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. In particular, for such a large class of represe…
We study the arithmetic of degree $N-1$ Eisenstein cohomology classes for locally symmetric spaces associated to $\mathrm{GL}_N$ over an imaginary quadratic field $k$. Under natural conditions we evaluate these classes on $(N-1)$-cycles associated to degree $N$ extensions $F/k$ as linear combinations of generalised Dedekind sums. As a consequence we prove a remarkable conjecture of Sczech and Colmez expressing critical values of $L$-functions attached to Hecke characters of $F$ as polynomials in Kronecker--Eisenstein series evaluated at torsion points on elliptic curves with multiplication by …
Rationality results are proved for the ratios of critical values of Rankin-Selberg L-functions of GL(n) x GL(n') over a totally imaginary field F, by studying rank-one Eisenstein cohomology for the group GL(N)/F, where N = n+n', generalizing the methods and results of previous work with Guenter Harder where the base field was totally real. In contrast to the totally real situation, the internal structure of the totally imaginary base field has a delicate effect on the rationality results.
Let $F$ be a CM field, let $p$ be a prime number. The goal of this paper is to show, under mild conditions, that the modulo $p$ cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces $X$ for $GL_2(F)$ with level prime to $p$ is concentrated in degrees belonging to the Borel-Wallach range $[q_0,q_0+\ell_0]$ after localizing at a "strongly non-Eisenstein" maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra. From this result, we deduce expected consequences on the structure of the first and last cohomology groups as modules over the Hecke algebra.
We study the arithmetic of Eisenstein cohomology classes (in the sense of G. Harder) for symmetric spaces associated to GL_2 over imaginary quadratic fields. We prove in many cases a lower bound on their denominator in terms of a special L-value of a Hecke character providing evidence for a conjecture of Harder that the denominator is given by this L-value. We also prove under some additional assumptions that the restriction of the classes to the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification of the spaces is integral. Such classes are interesting for their use in congruences with cuspidal class…
Let F be the imaginary quadratic field of discriminant -3 and OF its ring of integers. Let Gamma be the arithmetic group GL_3 (OF), and for any ideal n subset OF let Gamma_0 (n) be the congruence subgroup of level n consisting of matrices with bottom row (0,0,*) bmod n. In this paper we compute the cohomology spaces H^{nu - 1} (Gamma_0 (n); C) as a Hecke module for various levels n, where nu is the virtual cohomological dimension of Gamma. This represents the first attempt at such computations for GL_3 over an imaginary quadratic field, and complements work of Grunewald--Helling--Mennicke and …
The cohomology $H^*(Γ, E) $ of a torsion-free arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ of the special linear $\mathbb{Q}$-group $\mathsf{G} = SL_n$ may be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of $Γ$. Within this framework, there is a decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology and the Eisenstein cohomology. The latter space is decomposed according to the classes $\{\mathsf{P}\}$ of associate proper parabolic $\mathbb{Q}$-subgroups of $\mathsf{G}$. Each summand $H^*_{\mathrm{\{P\}}}(Γ, E)$ is built up by Eisenstein series (or residues of such) attached to cuspidal automorphic forms …
Let G=O(n+3) be an orthogonal group of rank one and H=O(n+2) an anisotropic subgroup. We unwind the period along H of a spherical Eisenstein series of G against a cuspform of H into an Euler product and evaluate the local factors at odd primes.
We give a new, purely topological construction of Eisenstein cohomology classes for Hilbert-Blumenthal varieties using the polylogarithm for families of topological tori and a decomposition with respect to the units in the center of $GL_2$. These classes are explicitly calculated in de Rham chomology and compared with Harder's Eisenstein classes. For non-trivial coefficient systems the whole Eisenstein cohomology in positive degrees is generated by these topological Eisenstein classes. This gives an alternative proof for the rationality of Harder's Eisenstein operator without using any multipl…
Fix a number field k with its adele ring A. Let G=O(n+3) be an orthogonal group of k-rank 1 and H=O(n+2) a k-anisotropic subgroup. We have previously [arXiv:0908.3521] described how to factor the global period of a spherical Eisenstein series of G against a cuspform F of H into an Euler product. Here, we describe how to evaluate the factors at even primes. When the local field is unramified, we carry out the computation in all cases. We show also concrete examples of the complete period when k=Q. The results are consistent with the Gross-Prasad conjecture.
The main purpose of this paper is the geometric construction, and the analysis of the formalism of elliptic Bloch groups. In the setting of absolute cohomology, we obtain a generalization of Beilinson's Eisenstein symbol to divisors of an elliptic curve, whose support is not necessarily torsion. For motivic cohomology, such a generalization is obtained in low degrees. Our main result shows that the Eisenstein symbol can be defined in all degrees if the elliptic analogue of the Beilinson-Soule vanishing conjecture holds.
We construct a norm compatible system of Galois cohomology classes in the cyclotomic extension of the field of rationnals giving rise (conjecturally) to the degree four p-adic L-function of the symplectic group GSp(4). These classes are defined as cup products of torsion sections of the elliptic polylogarithm pro-sheaf. We rely on the norm compatibility of the elliptic polylogarithm and on some weight computations in the cohomology of Siegel threefolds.
We develop a theory of modular forms on the groups $\mathrm{SO}(3,n+1)$, $n \geq 3$. This is very similar to, but simpler, than the notion of modular forms on quaternionic exceptional groups, which was initiated by Gross-Wallach and Gan-Gross-Savin. We prove the results analogous to those of earlier papers of the author on modular forms on exceptional groups, except now in the familiar setting of classical groups. Moreover, in the setting of $\mathrm{SO}(3,n+1)$, there is a family of absolutely convergent Eisenstein series, which are modular forms. We prove that these Eisenstein series have al…
We show that the periods of the holomorphic Eisenstein series of level 1, parallel weight 2, on a Hilbert modular surface are not rational, even up to scaling. This is deduced from a study of the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Hilbert modular surface, where we find extension classes related to the units of the real quadratic field. We prove similar results for Hilbert modular varieties of all dimensions, and produce extensions of Galois representations in étale cohomology. The key point is to study the restriction of the canonical extension of the Hodge bundle to the boundary o…
In this paper we compute the cohomology groups of GL(4,Z) with coefficients in symmetric powers of the standard representation twisted by the determinant. This problem arises in Goncharov's approach to the study of motivic multiple zeta values of depth 4. The techniques that we use include Kostant's formula for cohomology groups of nilpotent Lie subalgebras of a reductive Lie algebra, Borel-Serre compactification, a result of Harder on Eisenstein cohomology. Finally, we need to show that the ghost class, which is present in the cohomology of the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification, di…
Eisenstein classes of Siegel varieties are motivic cohomology classes defined as pull-backs by torsion sections of the polylogarithm prosheaf on the universal abelian scheme. By reduction to the Hilbert-Blumenthal case, we prove that the Betti realization of these classes on Siegel varieties of arbitrary genus have non-trivial residue on zero dimensional strata of the Baily-Borel compactification. A direct corollary is the non-vanishing of a higher regulator map.
In this paper we prove that the motivic Eisenstein classes associated to polylogarithms of commutative group schemes can be $p$-adically interpolated in étale cohomology. This generalizes results for elliptic curves obtained in our former work. Already for one dimensional commutative groups the results proved here are much more flexible as they allow to treat degeneration questions easily.
This is an announcement of certain rationality results for the critical values of the degree-2n L-functions attached to GL(1) $\times$ SO(n, n) over $\mathbb Q$ for an even positive integer n. The proof follows from studying the rank-one Eisenstein cohomology for SO(n + 1, n + 1).
We study the Whittaker coefficients of the minimal parabolic Eisenstein series on the $n$-fold cover of the split odd orthogonal group $SO_{2r+1}$. If the degree of the cover is odd, then Beineke, Brubaker and Frechette have conjectured that the $p$-power contributions to the Whittaker coefficients may be computed using the theory of crystal graphs of type C, by attaching to each path component a Gauss sum or a degenerate Gauss sum depending on the fine structure of the path. We establish their conjecture using a combination of automorphic and combinatorial-representation-theoretic methods. Su…
We apply the methods of Fukaya, Kato and Sharifi to refine Mazur's study of the Eisenstein ideal. Given prime numbers $N$ and $p\geq 5$ such that $p\mid φ(N)$, we study the quotient of the cohomology group of modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ by the square of the Eisenstein ideal. We study two invariants $b,c$ attached to this quotient and compute $c$. We propose a conjecture about the invariant $b$ which relates the structure of the ray class group of conductor $N$ to the modular symbols of $X_{0}(N)$. Assuming this conjecture, We compute the invariant $b$.
We use pseudodeformation theory to study Mazur's Eisenstein ideal. Given prime numbers $N$ and $p>3$, we study the Eisenstein part of the $p$-adic Hecke algebra for $Γ_0(N)$. We compute the rank of this Hecke algebra (and, more generally, its Newton polygon) in terms of Massey products in Galois cohomology, answering a question of Mazur and generalizing a result of Calegari-Emerton. We also also give new proofs of Merel's result on this rank and of Mazur's results on the structure of the Hecke algebra.
We develop the topological polylogarithm which provides an integral version of Nori's Eisenstein cohomology classes for $GL_n(\mathbf{Z})$ and yields classes with values in an Iwasawa algebra. This implies directly the integrality properties of special values of $L$-functions of totally real fields and a construction of the associated $p$-adic $L$-function. Using a result of Graf, we also apply this to prove some integrality and $p$-adic interpolation results for the Eisenstein cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties.
We describe torsion classes in the first cohomology group of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain generalized Dickson's invariants for p-power polynomial rings. Secondly, we describe torsion classes in the zero-th homology group of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as a module over the torsion invariants. As application, we obtain various congruences between cuspidal forms of level one and Eisenstein series.
We provide a new and simple automorphic method using Eisenstein series to study the equidistribution of modular symbols modulo primes, which we apply to prove an average version of a conjecture of Mazur and Rubin. More precisely, we prove that modular symbols corresponding to a Hecke basis of weight 2 cusp forms are asymptotically jointly equidistributed mod $p$ while we allow restrictions on the location of the cusps. As an application, we obtain a residual equidistribution result for Dedekind sums. Furthermore, we calculate the variance of the distribution and show a surprising bias with con…
In this paper, we relate three objects. The first is a particular value of a cup product in the cohomology of the Galois group of the maximal unramified outside p extension of a cyclotomic field containing the pth roots of unity. The second is an Iwasawa module over a nonabelian extension of the rationals, a subquotient of the maximal pro-p abelian unramified completely split at p extension of a certain pro-p Kummer extension of a cyclotomic field that contains all p-power roots of unity. The third is the quotient of an Eisenstein ideal in an ordinary Hecke algebra of Hida by the square of the…
Let $p$ and $\ell$ be primes such that $p > 3$ and $p \mid \ell-1$ and $k$ be an even integer. We use deformation theory of pseudo-representations to study the completion of the Hecke algebra acting on the space of cuspidal modular forms of weight $k$ and level $Γ_0(\ell)$ at the maximal Eisenstein ideal containing $p$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-rank of this Hecke algebra to be greater than $1$ in terms of vanishing of the cup products of certain global Galois cohomology classes. We also recover some of the results proven by Wake and Wang-Erickson for …
Let $N>1$ be an integer, and let $Γ= Γ_0 (N) \subset \SL_4 (\Z)$ be the subgroup of matrices with bottom row congruent to $(0,0,0,*)\mod N$. We compute $H^5 (Γ; \C) $ for a range of $N$, and compute the action of some Hecke operators on many of these groups. We relate the classes we find to classes coming from the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification, to Eisenstein series, and to classical holomorphic modular forms of weights 2 and 4.
Let $k,N \in \mathbb{N}$ with $N$ square-free and $k>1$. We prove an orthogonal relation and use this to compute the Fourier coefficients of the Eisenstein part of any $f(z) \in M_{2k}(Γ_0(N))$ in terms of sum of divisors function. In particular, if $f(z) \in E_{2k}(Γ_0(N))$, then the computation will to yield to an expression for the Fourier coefficients of $f(z)$. Then we apply our main theorem to give formulas for convolution sums of the divisor function to extend the result by Ramanujan, and to eta quotients which yields to formulas for number of representations of integers by certain fami…
We work out instances of a general conjecture on congruences between Hecke eigenvalues of induced and cuspidal automorphic representations of a reductive group, modulo divisors of certain critical L-values, in the case that the group is a split orthogonal group. We provide some numerical evidence in the case that the group is SO(4,3) and the L-function is the spinor L-function of a genus 2, vector-valued, Siegel cusp form. We also consider the case that the group is SO(4,4) and the L-function is a triple product L-function.
In this paper we fully describe the cuspidal and the Eisenstein cohomology of the group $G=GL_2$ over a definite quaternion algebra $D/\Q$. Functoriality is used to show the existence of residual and cuspidal automorphic forms, having cohomology in degree 1. The latter ones turn out to be CAP-representations, though $G$ satisfies Strong Multiplicity One. A non-vanishing result on intertwining operators of induced representations will serve as a starting point for further investigations concerning rationality of critical $L$-values.
In recent years, a number of papers have been devoted to the study of roots of period polynomials of modular forms. Here, we study cohomological analogues of the Eichler-Shimura period polynomials corresponding to higher $L$-derivatives. We state general conjectures about the locations of the roots of the full and odd parts of the polynomials, in analogy with the existing literature on period polynomials, and we also give numerical evidence that similar results hold for our higher derivative "period polynomials" in the case of cusp forms. We prove a special case of this conjecture in the case …
