Consider the action of a connected complex reductive group on a finite-dimensional vector space. A fundamental result in invariant theory states that the orbit closure of a vector v is separated from the origin if and only if some homogeneous invariant polynomial is nonzero on v, i.e. v is not in the null cone. Thus, efficiently finding the minimum distance between the orbit closure and the origin can lead to deterministic algorithms for null cone membership, an important polynomial identity testing problem including the non-commutative Edmonds problem. This connection to optimization has recently led to efficient algorithms for many problems in invariant theory.
Here we explore a refinement of the famous duality between orbit closures and invariant polynomials, which holds that the following two quantities coincide: (1) the logarithm of the Euclidean distance between the orbit closure and the origin and (2) the rate of exponential growth of the 'invariant part' of $v^{\otimes k}$ in the semiclassical limit as k tends to infinity. This result can be deduced from work of S. Zhang (Geometric reductivity at Archimedean places, 1994), which uses sophisticated tools in arithmetic geometry. We provide a new and independent elementary proof inspired by the Fourier-analytic proof of the local central limit theorem. We generalize the result to projections onto highest weight vectors and isotypical components, and explore connections between such semiclassical limits and the asymptotic behavior of multiplicities in representation theory, large deviations theory in classical and quantum statistics, and the Jacobian conjecture as reformulated by Mathieu. Our formulas imply that they can be computed, in many cases efficiently, to arbitrary precision.
We develop reductions for classifications of singularities of orbit closures in module varieties. Then we show that the orbit closures for representations of Dynkin quivers are regular in codimension two.
Given two elements of a vector space acted on by a reductive group, we ask whether they lie in the same orbit, and if not, whether one lies in the orbit closure of the other. We develop techniques to optimize the orbit and orbit closure algorithms and apply these to give a partial classification of orbit closure containments in the case of cubic surfaces with infinitely many singular points, which are known to fall into 13 normal forms. We also discuss the computational obstructions to completing this classification, and discuss tools for future work in this direction.
We characterize the Sp_{2n} orbits in the flag variety for SL_{2n} with rationally smooth closure via a pattern avoidance criterion, also showing that the singular and rationally singular loci of such orbit closures coincide.
We use the geometric technique, developed by Weyman, to calculate the resolution of orbit closures of representations of Dynkin quivers with every vertex being source or sink. We use this resolution to derive the normality of such orbit closures. As a consequence we obtain the normality of certain orbit closures of type E.
In this paper we investigate the orbit closures for the class of representations of simple algebraic groups associated to various gradings on a simple Lie algebras of type $E_6$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The methods for classifying the orbits for these actions were developed by Vinberg. We give the orbit descriptions, the degeneration partial orders, and decide the normality of the orbit closures. We also investigate the rational singularities, Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties for the orbit closures. We give the generators of the defining ideals of orbit closures.
We investigate the properties of coordinate rings of orbit closures for quivers of type $A_3$ by considering the desingularization given by Reineke. We construct explicit minimal free resolutions of the defining ideals of the orbit closures thus giving us a minimal set of generators for the defining ideal. The resolution allows us to read off some geometric properties of the orbit closure. In addition, we give a characterization for the orbit closure to be Gorenstein.
Let A be a finitely generated associative algebra over an algebraically closed field. We characterize the finite dimensional modules over A whose orbit closures are regular varieties.
We show that the orbit closure of a directing module is regular in codimension one. In particular, this result gives information about a distinguished irreducible component of a module variety.
We give a negative answer to a question by J.M. Landsberg on the nature of normalizations of orbit closures. A counterexample originates from the study of complex, ternary, cubic forms.
We show that the orbit closures for directing modules over tame algebras are normal and Cohen-Macaulay. The proof is based on deformations to normal toric varieties.
This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1201.1102. We investigate the orbit closures for the class of representations of simple algebraic groups associated to various gradings on the simple Lie algebra of type $E_7$. The methods for classifying the orbits for these actions were developed by Vinberg . We give the orbit descriptions, the degeneration partial orders, and indicate normality of the orbit closures. We also investigate the rational singularities, Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties for the orbit closures. We give the information on the defining ideals of orbit closures.
We use the Kempf-Lascoux-Weyman geometric technique in order to determine the minimal free resolutions of some orbit closures of quivers. As a consequence, we obtain that for Dynkin quivers orbit closures of 1-step representations are normal with rational singularities. For Dynkin quivers of type $A$, we describe explicit minimal generators of the defining ideals of orbit closures of 1-step representations. Using this, we provide an algorithm for type $A$ quivers for describing an efficient set of generators of the defining ideal of the orbit closure of any representation.
We classify the orbit closures in the variety Nov_3 of complex, 3-dimensional Novikov algebras and obtain the Hasse diagrams for the closure ordering of the orbits. We provide invariants which are easy to compute and which enable us to decide whether or not one Novikov algebra degenerates to another Novikov algebra.
We study in this paper the jet schemes of the closure of nilpotent orbits in a finite-dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra. For the nilpotent cone, which is the closure of the regular nilpotent orbit, all the jet schemes are irreducible. This was first observed by Eisenbud and Frenkel, and follows from a strong result of Mustautca (2001). Using induction and restriction of "little" nilpotent orbits in reductive Lie algebras, we show that for a large number of nilpotent orbits, the jet schemes of their closure are reducible. As a consequence, we obtain certain geometrical properties of the…
This short note is a supplement to the previous article with the same title. Here we treat a conical symplectic variety obtained as a finite covering of a (not necessarily normal) nilpotent orbit closure of a complex semisimple Lie algebra.
We continue the study of the closures of $GL(V)$-orbits in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\cN$ begun by the first two authors. We prove that each closure is an invariant-theoretic quotient of a suitably-defined enhanced quiver variety. We conjecture, and prove in special cases, that these enhanced quiver varieties are normal complete intersections, implying that the enhanced nilpotent orbit closures are also normal.
The group $G = GL_r(k) \times (k^\times)^n$ acts on $\mathbf{A}^{r \times n}$, the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices: $GL_r(k)$ acts by row operations and $(k^\times)^n$ scales columns. A matrix orbit closure is the Zariski closure of a point orbit for this action. We prove that the class of such an orbit closure in $G$ equivariant $K$-theory of $\mathbf{A}^{r \times n}$ is determined by the matroid of a generic point. We present two formulas for this class. The key to the proof is to show that matrix orbit closures have rational singularities.
The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and its Poincare polynomial agrees with the Eulerian polynomial. In this paper, we study the Poincare polynomial of a generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety in $G/B$. When the generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety is smooth, its Poincare polynomial is known to agree with a certain generalization of the Eulerian polynomial. We extend this result to an arbitrary generic torus orbit closure which is not necessarily smooth.
In this article the generic torus orbit closure in a flag Bott manifold is shown to be a non-singular toric variety, and its fan structure is explicitly calculated.
We give a new proof of the classification of ${\rm GL}^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closures that are saturated for the absolute period foliation of the Hodge bundle. As a consequence, we obtain a short proof of the classification of closures of leaves of the absolute period foliation of the Hodge bundle. Our approach is based on a method for classifying ${\rm GL}^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closures using deformations of flat pairs of pants.
Let $N$ be a point of an orbit closure $\bar{O_M}$ in a module variety such that its orbit $O_N$ has codimension two in $\bar{O_M}$. We show that under some additional conditions the pointed variety $(\bar{O_M},N)$ is smoothly equivalent to a cone over a rational normal curve.
The projectivised nilpotent orbit closure P(\bar{O}) carries a natural contact structure on its smooth part. A resolution X \to P(\bar{O}) is called contact if the contact structure on P(O) extends to a contact structure on X. It turns out that contact resolutions, crepant resolutions and minimal models of P(\bar{O}) are all the same. In this note, we determine when the projectivised nilpotent orbit closure admits a contact resolution, and in the case of existence, we study the birational geometry among different contact resolutions.
We study resolutions of singularities of orbit closures in quiver representations. We consider certain resolutions of singularities which have already been constructed by Reineke, and we determine under which conditions they are crepant. More specifically, we deal with quivers of type A3, An, D4. Then, as an application of the results we have found, we construct several Fano and Calabi-Yau varieties as orbital degeneracy loci.
We study the distribution of $S$-integral points on $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms and prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $S$-integral points of bounded height on $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms. This extends a result of Duke, Rudnick, and Sarnak. The main ingredients of the proof are the method of mixing developed by Eskin-McMullen and Benoist-Oh, Chambert-Loir-Tschinkel's study of asymptotic volume of height balls, and Hassett-Tschinkel's description of log resolutions of $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms.
One of our results of this article is that every (projective) crepant resolution of a Slodowy slice in a nilpotent orbit closure in $\mathfrak{sl}_N(\mathbb{C})$ can be obtained as the restriction of some crepant resolution of the nilpotent orbit closure. We also show that there is a decomposition of the Slodowy slice into other Slodowy slices with good properties. From this decomposition, one can count the number of crepant resolutions.
Over a field of characteristic $0$, we construct a minimal set of generators of the defining ideals of closures of nilpotent conjugacy class in the set of $n \times n$ matrices. This modifies a conjecture of Weyman and provides a complete answer to it.
We develop an algorithm for computing the closure of a given nilpotent $G_0$-orbit in $\g_1$, where $\g_1$ and $G_0$ are coming from a $\Z$ or a $\Z/m\Z$-grading $\g= \bigoplus \g_i$ of a simple complex Lie algebra $\g$.
We prove that a conical symplectic variety with maximal weight 1 is isomorphic to one of the following: (i) an affine space with the standard symplectic form (ii) a nilpotent orbit closure of a complex semisimple Lie algebra with the Kirillov-Kostant form.
Working over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 3, we calculate the orbit closures in the Witt algebra W under the action of its automorphism group G. We also outline how the same techniques can be used to determine closures of orbits of all heights except p-1 (in which case we only obtain a conditional statement) in the dual space W^* under the induced action of G. As a corollary we prove that the algebra of invariants k[W^*]^G is trivial.
In this note we investigate the normality of closures of orthogonal and symplectic nilpotent orbits in positive characteristic. We prove that the closure of such a nilpotent orbit is normal provided that neither type d nor type e minimal irreducible degeneration occurs in the closure, and conversely if the closure is normal, then any type e minimal irreducible degeneration does not occur in it. Here, the minimal irreducible degenerations of a nilpotent orbit are introduced by W. Hesselink in [6] (or see [11] from which we take Table 1 for the complete list of all minimal irreducible degenerati…
We develop interval pattern avoidance and Mars-Springer ideals to study singularities of symmetric orbit closures in a flag variety. This paper focuses on the case of the Levi subgroup GL_p x GL_q acting on the classical flag variety. We prove that all reasonable singularity properties can be classified in terms of interval patterns of clans.
We show the existence of a large family of representations supported by the orbit closure of the determinant. However, the validity of our result is based on the validity of the celebrated `Latin Square Conjecture' due to Alon-Tarsi or more precisely on the validity of an equivalent `column Latin Square Conjecture' due to Huang-Rota.
We review the various pattern avoidance criteria that have been developed for smoothness and rational smoothness of symmetric subvarieties of flag varieties in the classical cases, including some proofs and giving references for other results.
Let M_d(k) denote the space of dxd-matrices with coefficients in an algebraically closed field k. Let X be an orbit closure in the product [M_d(k)]^t equipped with the action of the general linear group GL_d(k) by simultaneous conjugation. We show that X is regular at any its point y such that the orbit of y has codimension one in X. The proof uses mainly the representation theory of associative algebras.
We prove that for a simply laced group, the closure of the Borel conjugacy class of any nilpotent element of height $2$ in its conjugacy class is normal and admits a rational resolution. We extend this, using Frobenius splitting techniques, to the closure in the whole Lie algebra if either the group has type $A$ or the element has rank $2$.
Let $T$ be the subgroup of diagonal matrices in the group SL(n). The aim of this paper is to find all finite-dimensional simple rational SL(n)-modules $V$ with the following property: for each point $v\in V$ the closure $\bar{Tv}$ of its $T$-orbit is a normal affine variety. Moreover, for any SL(n)-module without this property a $T$-orbit with non-normal closure is constructed. The proof is purely combinatorial: it deals with the set of weights of simple SL(n)-modules. The saturation property is checked for each subset in the set of weights.
Let T be a maximal torus in a classical linear group G. In this paper we find all simple rational G-modules V such that for each vector v in V the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For every other G-module we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. We use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in terms of the set of weights of a simple G-module. This work is a continuation of the previous work, where the same problem was solved in the case G=SL(n).
A nilpotent orbit $O$ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ has finite fundamental group. Associated with an etale cover of $O$, we have a finite cover of the closure $\bar{O}$ of $O$. In this article we consider the finite cover X associated with the universal cover of a nilpotent orbit $O$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We construct explicitly a Q-factorial terminalization of X in a group theoretic way.

Understanding the difference between group orbits and their closures is a key difficulty in geometric complexity theory (GCT): While the GCT program is set up to separate certain orbit closures, many beautiful mathematical properties are only known for the group orbits, in particular close relations with symmetry groups and invariant spaces, while the orbit closures seem much more difficult to understand. However, in order to prove lower bounds in algebraic complexity theory, considering group orbits is not enough. In this paper we tighten the relationship between the orbit of the power sum po…
Given a reductive group $G$ and a parabolic subgroup $P\subset G$, with maximaltorus $T$, we consider (following Dabrowski's work) the closure $X$ of a generic $T$-orbit in $G/P$, and determine in combinatorial termswhen the toric variety $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein Fano, extending in this way the classification of smooth Fano generic closures given by Voskresenski\uı and Klyachko. As an application, we apply the well known correspondence between Gorenstein Fano toric varieties and reflexive polytopes in order to exhibit which reflexive polytopes correspond to generic closures -- this list …
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group, let $V$ be a finite dimensional algebraic $G$-module, and let $\mathcal O_1$, $\mathcal O_2$ be two $G$-orbits in $V$. We describe a constructive way to find out whether $\mathcal O_1$ lies in the closure of $\mathcal O_2$ or not.
Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group, and let T be a maximal torus in G. In this paper, for every such G, we find all simple rational G-modules V with the following property: for every vector v in V, the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For all G-modules without this property we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. To solve this problem, we use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in the terms of weights of a simple G-module. This paper continues two papers of the second author, where the same problem was solved for classical linear groups.
This article contains an overview of the author's joint work with Allen Knutson and Jenna Rajchgot on $K$-polynomials of orbit closures for type $A$ quivers. It is written to an audience interested in interactions between representations of algebras, algebraic geometry, and commutative algebra. A few open problems resulting from the work are also explained.
This paper deals with singularities of closures of $2$-nilpotent Borel conjugacy classes in either a $\text{GL}_n$-conjugacy class or in the nilpotent cone of $\text{GL}_n$. In the latter case we construct a resolution of singularities, in the former we show that singularities are rational by applying a result of M. Brion. We reason why this generalizes the result of N. Perrin and E. Smirnov on the rationality of singularities of Springer fiber components in the two-column case. In the case of Borel orbit closures being contained in orbital varieties, we give an alternative version of L. Fress…
The irreducible representations of complex semisimple algebraic groups with finitely many orbits are parametrized by graded simple Lie algebras. For the exceptional Lie algebras, Kraskiewicz and Weyman exhibit the Hilbert polynomials and the expected minimal free resolutions of the normalization of the orbit closures. We present an interactive method to construct explicitly these and related resolutions in Macaulay2. The method is then used in the cases of the Lie algebras of type $E_6$, $F_4$ and $G_2$, to confirm the shape of the expected resolutions as well as some geometric properties of t…
The subgroup K=GL_p x GL_q of GL_{p+q} acts on the (complex) flag variety GL_{p+q}/B with finitely many orbits. We introduce a family of polynomials that specializes to representatives for cohomology classes of the orbit closures in the Borel model. We define and study K-orbit determinantal ideals to support the geometric naturality of these representatives. Using a modification of these ideals, we describe an analogy between two local singularity measures: the H-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials.
We study closures of conjugacy classes in the symmetric matrices of the orthogonal group and we determine which one are normal varieties. In contrast to the result for the symplectic group where all classes have normal closure, there is only a relatively small portion of classes with normal closure. We perform a combinatorial computation on top of the same methods used by Kraft-Procesi and Ohta.
Let $X$ denote an equivariant embedding of a connected reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $B$ denote a Borel subgroup of $G$ and let $Z$ denote a $B \times B$-orbit closure in $X$. When the characteristic of $k$ is positive and $X$ is projective we prove that $Z$ is globally $F$-regular. As a consequence, $Z$ is normal and Cohen-Macaulay for arbitrary $X$ and arbitrary characteristics. Moreover, in characteristic zero it follows that $Z$ has rational singularities. This extends earlier results by the second author and M. Brion.
A subset X of a vector space V is said to have the "Separation Property" if it separates linear forms in the following sense: given a pair (a, b) of linearly independent forms on V there is a point x on X such that a(x)=0 and b(x) is not equal to 0. A more geometric way to express this is the following: every homogeneous hyperplane H in V is linearly spanned by its intersection with X. The separation property was first asked for conjugacy classes in simple Lie algebras. We give an answer for orbit closures in representation spaces of an algebraic torus. We consider also the strong and the weak…
