Let $T$ be the subgroup of diagonal matrices in the group SL(n). The aim of this paper is to find all finite-dimensional simple rational SL(n)-modules $V$ with the following property: for each point $v\in V$ the closure $\bar{Tv}$ of its $T$-orbit is a normal affine variety. Moreover, for any SL(n)-module without this property a $T$-orbit with non-normal closure is constructed. The proof is purely combinatorial: it deals with the set of weights of simple SL(n)-modules. The saturation property is checked for each subset in the set of weights.
Let T be a maximal torus in a classical linear group G. In this paper we find all simple rational G-modules V such that for each vector v in V the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For every other G-module we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. We use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in terms of the set of weights of a simple G-module. This work is a continuation of the previous work, where the same problem was solved in the case G=SL(n).
The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and its Poincare polynomial agrees with the Eulerian polynomial. In this paper, we study the Poincare polynomial of a generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety in $G/B$. When the generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety is smooth, its Poincare polynomial is known to agree with a certain generalization of the Eulerian polynomial. We extend this result to an arbitrary generic torus orbit closure which is not necessarily smooth.
Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group, and let T be a maximal torus in G. In this paper, for every such G, we find all simple rational G-modules V with the following property: for every vector v in V, the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For all G-modules without this property we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. To solve this problem, we use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in the terms of weights of a simple G-module. This paper continues two papers of the second author, where the same problem was solved for classical linear groups.
In this article the generic torus orbit closure in a flag Bott manifold is shown to be a non-singular toric variety, and its fan structure is explicitly calculated.
The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A_{n-1}$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and well studied. In this paper we introduce the notion of a generic torus orbit in the Schubert variety $X_w$ $(w\in \mathfrak{S}_n)$ and study its closure $Y_w$. We identify the maximal cone in the fan of $Y_w$ corresponding to a fixed point $uB$ $(u\le w)$, associate a graph $Γ_w(u)$ to each $u\le w$, and show that $Y_w$ is smooth at $uB$ if and only if $Γ_w(u)$ is a forest. We also introduce a polynomial $A_w(t)$ for each $w$, which agrees with the Eulerian polynomial whe…
Given a reductive group $G$ and a parabolic subgroup $P\subset G$, with maximaltorus $T$, we consider (following Dabrowski's work) the closure $X$ of a generic $T$-orbit in $G/P$, and determine in combinatorial termswhen the toric variety $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein Fano, extending in this way the classification of smooth Fano generic closures given by Voskresenski\uı and Klyachko. As an application, we apply the well known correspondence between Gorenstein Fano toric varieties and reflexive polytopes in order to exhibit which reflexive polytopes correspond to generic closures -- this list …
A finite Coxeter group $W$ has a natural metric $d$ and if $\mathcal{M}$ is a subset of $W$, then for each $u\in W$, there is $q\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $d(u,q)=d(u,\mathcal{M})$. Such $q$ is not unique in general but if $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid, then it is unique, and we define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ so that $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}(u)=q$. The $T$-fixed point set $Y^T$ of a $T$-orbit closure $Y$ in a flag variety $G/B$ is a Coxeter matroid, where $G$ is a semisimple algebraic group, $B$ is a Borel subgroup, and $T$ is a maxim…
In this paper, we compute the fundamental group of the complement of linear torus curves of maximal contact and we show that it is isomorphic that of generic linear torus curves.
We define the Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties. We show they are isomorphic to the smooth varieties defined in [D.~Barbasch-S.~Evens '94] that map generically finitely to symmetric orbit closures, thereby giving resolutions of singularities in certain cases. Our definition parallels [P.~Magyar '98]'s construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties [H.~C.~Hansen '73, M.~Demazure '74]. From this alternative viewpoint, one deduces a graphical description in type $A$, stratification into closed subvarieties of the same kind, and determination of the torus-fixed points. Moreover, we explain how these ma…
Let p be a prime, k be a field of characteristic different from p containing a primitive p-th root of unity and N be the normalizer of the maximal torus in the projective linear group PGLn. We compute the exact value of the essential dimension ed(N;p) of N at p for every n.
We study a variation of Mumford's quotient for the action of a maximal torus $T$ on a flag variety $G/B$ depending on projective embedding $G/B \hookrightarrow \Bbb P(V(χ))$, where $T$-linearization is induced by the standard $G$-linearization. We describe the linear spans of the supports of semistable orbits, that allow us to calculate the rank of the Picard group of quotient $(G/B)^{ss}//T$, when $G$ does not contain simple factors of type $A_n$.
Motivated by Buchstaber's and Terzic' work on the complex Grassmannians G(2,4) and G(2,5) we describe the moment map and the orbit space of oriented Grassmannians of planes under the action of a maximal compact torus. Our main tool is the realisation of these oriented Grassmannians as smooth complex quadric hypersurfaces and the relatively simple Geometric Invariant Theory of the corresponding algebraic torus action.
Let L be a homogeneous ample line bundle on any flag variety G/P and let T be a maximal torus of G. We prove a general necessary and sufficient condition for L to descend as a line bundle on the GIT quotient of G/P by T. We use this result to explicitly determine exactly which L descend to the GIT quotient for any simple complex algebraic group G and any parabolic subgroup P.
Let $G$ be the product $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We show that the $G$-equivariant Chow class of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is determined by a matroid. To do this, we split the natural surjective map from the $G$ equvariant Chow ring of the space of matrices to the torus equivariant Chow ring of the Grassmannian. The splitting takes the class of a Schubert variety to the corresponding factorial Schur polynomial, and also has the property that the class of a subvariety of the Grassmannian is mapped to the class of the closure of those matrices whose row span is …
An infinite type toric variety is a normal toric variety given by a fan with infinitely many cones. We construct examples in this paper coming from representation theory of loop groups. The fans that appear are cones on Voronoi tilings on a vector space equipped with an inner product. We also explain the affine analogue of the connection between a generic torus orbit closure in a flag variety and the closure a maximal torus in the wonderful compactification.
Let $G=SO(8n+4,\mathbb{C})$ ($n\ge 1$). Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $P (\supset B)$ denote the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n+2}$. In this article, we prove projective normality of the GIT quotients of certain Schubert varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian $G/P$ with respect to the descent of a suitable $T$-linearized very ample line bundle.
Consider an algebraic action of a connected complex reductive algebraic group on a complex polarized projective variety. In this paper, we first introduce the nilpotent quotient, the quotient of the polarized projective variety by a maximal unipotent subgroup. Then, we introduce and investigate three induced actions: one by the reductive group, one by a Borel subgroup, and one by a maximal torus, respectively. Our main result is that there are natural correspondences among quotients of these three actions. In the end, we mention a possible application to the moduli spaces of parabolic bundles …
For any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B,C$ and $D$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we provide a criterion for a Richardson variety in $G/P$ to admit semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$.
We study the maximum likelihood degree of linear concentration models in algebraic statistics. We relate the geometry of the reciprocal variety to that of semidefinite programming. We show that the Zariski closure in the Grassmanian of the set of linear spaces that do not attain their maximal possible maximum likelihood degree coincides with the Zariski closure of the set of linear spaces defining a projection with non-closed image of the positive semidefinite cone. In particular, this shows that this closure is a union of coisotropic hypersurfaces.
We show that the fundamental group of the complement of any irreducible tame torus sextics in $\bf P^2$ is isomorphic to $\bf Z_2*\bf Z_3$ except one class. The exceptional class has the configuration of the singularities $\{C_{3,9},3A_2\}$ and the fundamental group is bigger than $\bf Z_2*\bf Z_3$. In fact, the Alexander polynomial is given by $(t^2-t+1)^2$. For the proof, we first reduce the assertion to maximal curves and then we compute the fundamental groups for maximal tame torus curves.
We explore connected affine algebraic groups $G$, which enjoy the following finiteness property $\rm (F)$: for every algebraic action of $G$, the closure of every $G$-orbit contains only finitely many $G$-orbits. We obtain two main results. First, we classify such groups. Namely, we prove that a connected affine algebraic group $G$ enjoys property $\rm (F)$ if and only if $G$ is either a torus or a product of a torus and a one-dimensional connected unipotent algebraic group. Secondly, we obtain a characterization of such groups in terms of the modality of action in the sense of V. Arnol'd. Nam…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of maximal actions of compact tori on smooth manifolds and study compact connected complex manifolds equipped with maximal actions of compact tori. We give a complete classification of such manifolds, in terms of combinatorial objects, which are triples $(Δ, \mathfrak{h}, G)$ of nonsingular complete fan $Δ$ in $\mathfrak{g}$, complex vector subspace $\mathfrak{h}$ of $\mathfrak{g}^{\mathbb{C}}$ and compact torus $G$ satisfying certain conditions. We also give an equivalence of categories with suitable definitions of morphisms in these families, like toric…
Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the…
We give a stratification of the GIT quotient of the Grassmannian $G_{2,n}$ modulo the normaliser of a maximal torus of $SL_{n}(k)$ with respect to the ample generator of the Picard group of $G_{2,n}$. We also prove that the flag variety $GL_{n}(k)/B_{n}$ can be obtained as a GIT quotient of $GL_{n+1}(k)/B_{n+1}$ modulo a maximal torus of $SL_{n+1}(k)$ for a suitable choice of an ample line bundle on $GL_{n+1}(k)/B_{n+1}$.
A subset X of a vector space V is said to have the "Separation Property" if it separates linear forms in the following sense: given a pair (a, b) of linearly independent forms on V there is a point x on X such that a(x)=0 and b(x) is not equal to 0. A more geometric way to express this is the following: every homogeneous hyperplane H in V is linearly spanned by its intersection with X. The separation property was first asked for conjugacy classes in simple Lie algebras. We give an answer for orbit closures in representation spaces of an algebraic torus. We consider also the strong and the weak…
We confirm, to some extent, the belief that a projective variety X has the largest number (relative to the dimension of X) of independent commuting automorphisms of positive entropy only when X is birational to a complex torus or a quotient of a torus. We also include an addendum to an early paper though it is not used in the present paper.
We prove that a conical symplectic variety with maximal weight 1 is isomorphic to one of the following: (i) an affine space with the standard symplectic form (ii) a nilpotent orbit closure of a complex semisimple Lie algebra with the Kirillov-Kostant form.
In this paper, for any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B_n,C_n$ or $D_n$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we describe all minimal dimensional Schubert varieties in $G/P$ admitting semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$. In this paper, we also describe, for any semi-simple simply connected algebraic group $G$ and for any Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$, all Coxeter elements $τ$ for which the Schubert variety $X(τ)$ admits a semistable point for the action of the torus $T$ with respect to a non-trivi…
For an automorphism group G on an n-dimensional (n > 2) normal projective variety or a compact Kähler manifold X so that G modulo its subgroup N(G) of null entropy elements is an abelian group of maximal rank n-1, we show that N(G) is virtually contained in Aut_0(X), the X is a quotient of a complex torus T and G is mostly descended from the symmetries on the torus T, provided that both X and the pair (X, G) are minimal.
To any algebraic curve A in a complex 2-torus $(\C^*)^2$ one may associate a closed infinite region in a real plane called the amoeba of A. The amoebas of different curves of the same degree come in different shapes and sizes. All amoebas in have finite area and, furthermore, there is an upper bound on the area in terms of the degree of the curve. The subject of this paper is the curves in a complex 2-torus whose amoebas are of the maximal area. We show that up to multiplication by a constant such curves are defined over real numbers and, furthermore, that their real loci are isotopic to so-ca…
Using results of Cartan, Matsumoto, and Casselman, we give a short proof of Timashev's theorem computing the real component group π_0 G(R) of a connected reductive real algebraic group G in terms of a maximal torus of G containing a maximal split torus.
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$, where $G = GL(n,\C)$, and where $K$ is one of the symmetric subgroups $O(n,\C)$ or $Sp(n,\C)$. We realize these orbit closures as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety equipped with a single flag of subbundles and a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form taking values in the trivial bundle. We describe how our equivariant formulas can be interpreted as giving formu…
We consider aspects of the geometry and topology of nilpotent orbits in finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. In particular, we give the equivariant cohomologies of the regular and minimal nilpotent orbits with respect to the action of a maximal compact torus of the overall group in question.
We give explicit formulas for torus-equivariant fundamental classes of closed $K$-orbits on the flag variety $G/B$ when $G$ is one of the classical groups $SL(n,\C)$, $SO(n,\C)$, or $Sp(2n,\C)$, and $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of $G$. We describe parametrizations of each orbit set and the combinatorics of its weak order, allowing us to compute formulas for the equivariant classes of all remaining orbit closures using divided difference operators. In each of the cases in type A, we realize the $K$-orbit closures as universal degeneracy loci of a certain type, involving a vector bundle $V$ over …
We describe noncommutative desingularizations of determinantal varieties, determinantal varieties defined by minors of generic symmetric matrices, and pfaffian varieties defined by pfaffians of generic anti-symmetric matrices. For maximal minors of square matrices and symmetric matrices, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution. Along the way, we describe a method to calculate the quiver with relations for any non-commutative desingularizations coming from exceptional collections over partial flag varieties.
We determine the integral homology of the orbit space of a maximal compact torus action on the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). Our approach uses the well-known Geometric Invariant Theory of the maximal algebraic torus action on this Grassmannian.

A Coxeter link is a closure of a product of two braids, one being a quasi-Coxeter element and the other being a product of partial full twists. This class of links includes torus knots \(T_{n,k}\) and torus links \(T_{n,nk}\). We identify the knot homology of a Coxeter link with the space of sections of a particular line bundle on a natural generalization of the punctual locus inside the flag Hilbert scheme of points in \(\mathbb{C}^2\).
An action of a group on a vector space partitions the latter into a set of orbits. We consider three natural and useful algorithmic "isomorphism" or "classification" problems, namely, orbit equality, orbit closure intersection, and orbit closure containment. These capture and relate to a variety of problems within mathematics, physics and computer science, optimization and statistics. These orbit problems extend the more basic null cone problem, whose algorithmic complexity has seen significant progress in recent years. In this paper, we initiate a study of these problems by focusing on the ac…
