The time-evolution of a moderately dense gas in a vacuum is described in classical mechanics by a particle density function obtained from the Enskog equation. Based on a McKean-Vlasov stochastic equation with jumps, the associated stochastic process was recently studied in \cite{ARS17}. The latter work was extended in \cite{FRS18} to the case of general hard and soft potentials without Grad's angular cut-off assumption. By the introduction of a shifted distance that exactly compensates for the free transport term that accrues in the spatially inhomogeneous setting, we prove in this work an inequality on the Wasserstein distance for any two measure-valued solutions to the Enskog equation. As a particular consequence, we find sufficient conditions for the uniqueness and continuous-dependence on initial data for solutions to the Enskog equation applicable to hard and soft potentials without angular cut-off.
An overdetermination is introduced in an initial condition for the second order mean field games system (MFGS). This makes the resulting problem close to the classical ill-posed Cauchy problems for PDEs. Indeed, in such a problem and overdetermination in boundary conditions usually takes place. A Lipschitz stability estimate is obtained. This estimate implies uniqueness. A new Carleman estimate is derived. The second estimate the author calls "quasi-Carleman estimate", since it contains two test functions rather than a single one in conventional Carleman estimates. These two estimates play the…
In this paper, we establish uniqueness of the solution of the Vlasov-Poisson system with spatial density belonging to a certain class of Orlicz spaces. This extends the uniqueness result of Loeper (which holds for uniformly bounded density) and the uniqueness result of the second author. Uniqueness is a direct consequence of our main result, which provides a quantitative stability estimate for the Wasserstein distance between two weak solutions with spatial density in such Orlicz spaces, in the spirit of Dobrushin's proof of stability for mean-field PDEs. Our proofs are built on the second-ord…
We prove an existence and uniqueness result for solutions $φ$ to a weighted pendulum equation in $\mathbb{R}$ where the weight is non-smooth and coercive. We also establish (in)stability results for $φ$ according to the monotonicity of the weight. These results are applied in a reduced model for thin ferromagnetic nanowires with notches to obtain existence, uniqueness and stability of domain walls connecting two opposite directions of the magnetization.
There is a few results about the global stability of nontrivial solutions to quasilinear wave equations. In this paper we are concerned with the uniqueness and stability of traveling waves to the time-like extremal hypersurface in Minkowski space. Firstly, we can get the existence and uniqueness of traveling wave solutions to the time-like extremal hypersurface in R1+(n+1), which can be considered as the generalized Bernstein theorem in Minkowski space. Furthermore, we also get the stability of traveling wave solutions with speed of light to time-like extremal hypersurface in 1 + (2 + 1) dimen…
When a plane shock hits a two-dimensional wedge head on, it experiences a reflection-diffraction process, and then a self-similar reflected shock moves outward as the original shock moves forward in time. The experimental, computational, and asymptotic analysis has indicated that various patterns occur, including regular reflection and Mach reflection. The von Neumann conjectures on the transition from regular to Mach reflection involve the existence, uniqueness, and stability of regular shock reflection-diffraction configurations, generated by concave cornered wedges for compressible flow. In…
The existence, uniqueness and stability of periodic traveling waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation is considered. In our approach, we give sufficient conditions to prove a uniqueness result for the single-lobe solution obtained by a constrained minimization problem. The spectral stability is then shown by determining that the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum and mass at the periodic wave has no negative eigenvalues. We propose the Petviashvili's method to investigate the spectral stability…
We study a system of parabolic equations consisting of a double nonlinear parabolic equations of Forchheimer type coupled with a semilinear parabolic equations. The system describes a fluid-like driven system for active-passive pedestrian dynamics. The structure of the nonlinearity of the coupling allows us to prove the uniqueness of solutions. We provide also stability estimates of solutions with respect to selected parameters.
In the recent paper [17] the first experimental determination of the density matrix of a free electron beam has been reported. The employed method leads to a linear inverse problem with a positive semidefinite operator as unknown. The purpose of this paper is to complement the experimental and algorithmic results in the work mentioned above by a mathematical analysis of the inverse problem concerning uniqueness, stability, and rates of convergence under different types of a-priori information.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of determining the spatially dependent source in a time fractional diffusion-wave equation, with the aid of extra measurement data at subboundary. Uniqueness result is obtained by using the analyticity and the new established unique continuation principle provided that the coefficients are all temporally independent. We also derive a Lipschitz stability of our inverse source problem under a suitable topology whose norm is given via the adjoint system of the fractional diffusion-wave equation.
We consider the subsonic moving point source problem for the scalar wave equation in $\pmb{R}^3$, proving a regularity result for the direct problem, and uniqueness and stability results for the inverse problem. We then present and investigate numerically a Bayesian framework for the inference of the source trajectory and intensity from wave field measurements. The framework employs Gaussian process priors, the pre-conditioned Crank-Nicholson scheme with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling, and conditioning on functionals to include prior information on the source trajectory.
In this paper, we show uniqueness and stability for the piecewise-smooth solutions to the Burgers--Hilbert equation constructed in Bressan and Zhang [Commun. Math. Sci., 15(1):165--184, 2017]. The Burgers--Hilbert equation is $u_t+(\frac{u^2}{2})_x=\mathbf{H}[u]$ where $\mathbf{H}$ is the Hilbert transform, a nonlocal operator. We show stability and uniqueness for solutions amongst a larger class than the uniqueness result in Bressan and Zhang. The solutions we consider are measurable and bounded, satisfy at least one entropy condition, and verify a strong trace condition. We do not have small…
This paper is concerned with the qualitative properties of viscocity solutions to a class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations (HJEs) in Banach spaces. Specifically, based on the concept of $β$-derivative \cite{DGZ93b} we establish the existence, uniqueness and stability of $β$-viscosity solutions for a class of HJEs in the form $u+H(x,u,Du)=0.$ The obtained results in this paper extend ealier works in the literature, for example, \cite{CL85}, \cite{CL86} and \cite{DGZ93b}.
We study nonlocal conservation laws with a discontinuous flux function of regularity $\mathsf{L}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ in the spatial variable and show existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in $\mathsf{C}\big([0,T];\mathsf{L}^{1}_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R})\big)$, as well as related maximum principles. We achieve this well-posedness by a proper reformulation in terms of a fixed-point problem. This fixed-point problem itself necessitates the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of a class of discontinuous ordinary differential equations. On the ODE level, we compare the solution type …
This paper is concerned with inverse source problems for the time-dependent Lamé system in an unbounded domain corresponding to the exterior of a bounded cavity or the full space $\R^3$. If the time and spatial variables of the source term can be separated with compact support, we prove that the vector valued spatial source term can be uniquely determined by boundary Dirichlet data in the exterior of a given cavity. Uniqueness and stability for recovering some class of time-dependent source terms are also obtained using partial boundary data.
This paper contains two main contributions. First, it provides optimal stability estimates for advection-diffusion equations in a setting in which the velocity field is Sobolev regular in the spatial variable. This estimate is formulated with the help of Kantorovich--Rubinstein distances with logarithmic cost functions. Second, the stability estimates are extended to the advection-diffusion equations with velocity fields whose gradients are singular integrals of $L^1$ functions entailing a new well-posedness result.
We show global well-posedness and exponential stability of equilibria for a general class of nonlinear dissipative bulk-interface systems. They correspond to thermodynamically consistent gradient structure models of bulk-interface interaction. The setting includes nonlinear slow and fast diffusion in the bulk and nonlinear coupled diffusion on the interface. Additional driving mechanisms can be included and non-smooth geometries and coefficients are admissible, to some extent. An important application are volume-surface reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear coupled diffusion.
In this short note, we observe that the Bamler-Kleiner proof of uniqueness and stability for 3-dimensional Ricci flow through singularities generalizes to singular Ricci flows in higher dimensions that satisfy an analogous canonical neighborhood property. In particular, this gives a canonical evolution through singularities for manifolds with positive isotropic curvature. The new ingredients we use are the recent classification of higher dimensional $κ$-solutions by Brendle, Daskalopoulos, Naff and Sesum, and the maximum principle for the linearized Ricci-DeTurck flow on locally conformally fl…
We consider the Cauchy problems of a non-strictly hyperbolic system which describes the compressible Euler fluid with exothermic reaction. In this paper a Lyapunov-type functional is constructed for balance laws. By analysis of the flow generated by front tracking method, we prove the well-posedness theorems and present the local features of global solutions.
We prove that standing-waves solutions to the non-linear Schrödinger equation in dimension one whose profiles can be obtained as minima of the energy over the mass, are orbitally stable and non-degenerate, provided the non-linear term $ G $ satisfies a Euler differential inequality. When the non-linear term $ G $ is a combined pure power-type, then there is only one positive, symmetric minimum of prescribed mass.

In this paper, we prove the uniqueness and structural stability of Poiseuille flows for axisymmetric solutions of steady Navier-Stokes system supplemented with Navier boundary conditions in a periodic pipe. Moreover, the stability is uniform with respect to both the flux and the slip coefficient of Navier boundary conditions. It is also showed that the non-zero frequency part of the velocity is bounded by a power function of the flux with negative power as long as the flux is suitably large. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to prove the uniform linear structural stability, where t…
The present paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations in time heterogeneous media of bistable type under the unbalanced condition. We first study space nonincreasing transition fronts and prove various important qualitative properties, including uniform steepness, stability, uniform stability and exponential decaying estimates. Then, we show that any transition front, after certain space shift, coincides with a space nonincreasing transition front (if it exists), which implies the uniqueness, up to space …
The initial value problem for an evolution equation of type $v' + Av + BKv = f$ is studied, where $A:V_A \to V_A'$ is a monotone, coercive operator and where $B:V_B \to V_B'$ induces an inner product. The Banach space $V_A$ is not required to be embedded in $V_B$ or vice versa. The operator $K$ incorporates a Volterra integral operator in time of convolution type with an exponentially decaying kernel. Existence of a global-in-time solution is shown by proving convergence of a suitable time discretisation. Moreover, uniqueness as well as stability results are proved. Appropriate integration-by-…
In this paper we study the uniqueness and the increasing stability in the inverse source problem for electromagnetic waves in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media from boundary data at multiple wave numbers. For the unique determination of sources, we consider inhomogeneous media and use tangential components of the electric field and magnetic field at the boundary of the reference domain. The proof relies on the Fourier transform with respect to the wave numbers and the unique continuation theorems. To study the increasing stability in the source identification, we consider homogeneous media a…
We study the flow of two immiscible fluids located on a solid bottom, where the lower fluid is Newtonian and the upper fluid is a non-Newtonian Ellis fluid. Neglecting gravitational effects, we consider the formal asymptotic limit of small film heights in the two-phase Navier--Stokes system. This leads to a strongly coupled system of two parabolic equations of fourth order with merely Hölder-continuous dependence on the coefficients. For the case of strictly positive initial film heights we prove local existence of strong solutions by abstract semigroup theory. Uniqueness is proved by energy m…
The manuscript is concerned with uniqueness and stability for inverse source problem of determining spatially varying factor $f(x)$ of a source term given by $R(t)f(x)$ with suitable given $R(t)$ in the right hand side of the Schrödinger equation with time independent coefficients. In order to establish these results we provide a simple proof of a logarithmic conditional stability of the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation with time-independent coefficients and the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on the whole boundary and a proof of uniqueness of solution to the Cauchy problem for t…
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{\fracα{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers' solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state s…
In this paper, uniqueness and uniform structural stability of Poiseuille flows in an infinitely long pipe with Navier boundary conditions are established for axisymmetric solutions of steady Navier-Stokes system. The crucial point is that the estimate is uniform with respect both the flux of flows and slip coefficient which appeared in Navier boundary conditions. With the aid of special structure of Navier-Stokes system and the refined estimate for some quantities such as radial velocity, the uniqueness and existence of steady solutions of Navier-Stokes system can be obtained even when the ext…
We investigate a PDE-constrained optimization problem, with an intuitive interpretation in terms of the design of robust membranes made out of an arbitrary number of different materials. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for general smooth bounded domains, and derive a symmetry result for radial ones. We strengthen our analysis by proving that, for this particular problem, there are no non-global local optima. When the membrane is made out of two materials, the problem reduces to a shape optimization problem. We lay the preliminary foundation for computable analysis of this type o…
Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system describes the evolution of two isothermal, incompressible, immiscible fluids in a bounded domain. In this work, we consider the stationary nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system in two and three dimensions with singular potential. We prove the existence of a weak solution for the system using pseudo-monotonicity arguments and Browder's theorem. Further we establish the uniqueness and regularity results for the weak solution of the stationary nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system for constant mobility parameter and viscosity. Finally, in two dimensi…
