The Cauchy problem for a multidimensional linear transport equation with discontinuous coefficient is investigated. Provided the coefficient satisfies a one-sided Lipschitz condition, existence, uniqueness and weak stability of solutions are obtained for either the conservative backward problem or the advective forward problem by duality. Specific uniqueness criteria are introduced for the backward conservation equation since weak solutions are not unique. A main point is the introduction of a generalized flow in the sense of partial differential equations, which is proved to have unique jacobian determinant, even though it is itself nonunique.
We present an existence result for a partial differential inclusion with linear parabolic principal part and relaxed one-sided Lipschitz multivalued nonlinearity in the framework of Gelfand triples. Our study uses discretizations of the differential inclusion by a Galerkin scheme, which is compatible with a conforming finite element method, and we analyze convergence properties of the discrete solution sets.
We use X^{s,b}-inspired spaces to prove a uniqueness result for Calderon's problem in a Lipschitz domain under the assumption that the conductivity is Lipschitz. For Lipschitz conductivities, we obtain uniqueness for conductivities close to the identity in a suitable sense. We also prove uniqueness for arbitrary C^1 conductivities.
We consider the follow-the-leader particle approximation scheme for a $1d$ scalar conservation law with nonnegative $L^\infty_c$ initial datum and with a $C^1$ concave flux, which is known to provide convergence towards the entropy solution $ρ$ to the corresponding Cauchy problem. We provide two novel contributions to this theory. First, we prove that the one-sided Lipschitz condition satisfied by the approximating density $ρ^n$ is a discrete version of an entropy condition; more precisely, under fairly general assumptions on $f$ (which imply concavity of $f$) we prove that the continuum versi…
In this paper we consider the problem of determining an unknown pair $λ$, $μ$ of piecewise constant Lamé parameters inside a three dimensional body from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz continuous dependence of $λ$ and $μ$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map.
In this paper we study the backward uniqueness for parabolic equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients in time and space. The result presented here improves an old uniqueness theorem due to Lions and Malgrange [Math. Scand. ${\bf 8}$ (1960), 277--286] and some more recent results of Del Santo and Prizzi [J. Math. Pures Appl. ${\bf 84}$ (2005), 471--491; Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., to appear].
In this paper, we consider a stochastic balance law with a Lipschitz flux and gain the uniqueness for stochastic entropy solutions. The argument is supported by the stochastic kinetic formulation, the Itô formula and the regularization techniques. Furthermore, as an application, we derive the uniqueness of stochastic entropy solutions for stochastic porous media type equations.
In this paper we study the local behavior of a solution to the Lamé system with \emph{Lipschitz} coefficients in dimension $n\ge 2$. Our main result is the bound on the vanishing order of a nontrivial solution, which immediately implies the strong unique continuation property. This paper solves the open problem of the strong uniqueness continuation property for the Lamé system with Lipschitz coefficients in any dimension.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
We are concerned with the problem of determining the damping boundary coefficient appearing in a dissipative wave equation from a single boundary measurement. We prove that the uniqueness holds at the origin provided that the initial condition is appropriately chosen. We show that the choice of the initial condition leading to uniqueness is related to a fine version of unique continuation property for elliptic operators. We also establish a Lipschitz directional stability estimate at the origin, which is obtained by a linearization process.
We prove a Lipschitz extension lemma in which the extension procedure simultaneously preserves the Lipschitz continuity for two non-equivalent distances. The two distances under consideration are the Euclidean distance and, roughly speaking, the geodesic distance along integral curves of a (possibly multi-valued) flow of a continuous vector field. The Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the extension can be estimated in terms of the Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the original function. This Lipschitz extension lemma allows us to remove the high integrability assump…
This work establishes the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the initial-value problem for the geometric transport equation $$ \frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d} t}T_t+\mathcal{L}_b T_t=0 $$ in the class of $k$-dimensional integral or normal currents $T_t$ ($t$ being the time variable) under the natural assumption of Lipschitz regularity of the driving vector field $b$. Our argument relies crucially on the notion of decomposability bundle introduced recently by Alberti and Marchese. In the particular case of $0$-currents, this also yields a new proof of the uniqueness for the continuity equati…
We establish a new local well-posedness result in the space of finite Borel measures for mild solutions of the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) model of chemotactic aggregation in two dimensions. Our result only requires that the initial measure satisfy the necessary assumption $\max_{x \in \Real^2}μ(\set{x}) < 8π$. This work improves the small-data results of Biler and the existence results of Senba and Suzuki. Our work is based on that of Gallagher and Gallay, who prove the uniqueness and log-Lipschitz continuity of the solution map for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) with m…
We consider the second order Cauchy problem $$u''+\m{u}Au=0, u(0)=u_{0}, u'(0)=u_{1},$$ where $m:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty)$ is a continuous function, and $A$ is a self-adjoint nonnegative operator with dense domain on a Hilbert space. It is well known that this problem admits local-in-time solutions provided that $u_{0}$ and $u_{1}$ are regular enough, depending on the continuity modulus of $m$. It is also well known that the solution is unique when $m$ is locally Lipschitz continuous. In this paper we prove that if either $<Au_{0},u_{1}>\neq 0$, or $|A^{1/2}u_{1}|^{2}\neq\m{u_{0}}|Au_{0}|^{2}…
We prove uniqueness for Calderón's problem with Lipschitz conductivities in higher dimensions. Combined with the recent work of Haberman, who treated the three and four dimensional cases, this confirms a conjecture of Uhlmann. Our proof builds on the work of Sylvester and Uhlmann, Brown, and Haberman and Tataru who proved uniqueness for $C^1$ conductivities and Lipschitz conductivities sufficiently close to the identity.
Using Bony's paramultiplication we improve a result obtained in in a previous paper for operators having coefficients non-Lipschitz-continuous with respect to $t$ but ${\mathcal C}^2$ with respect to $x$, showing that the same result is valid when ${\mathcal C}^2$ regularity is replaced by Lipschitz regularity in $x$.
We prove uniqueness in the inverse conductivity problem for uniformly elliptic conductivities in $W^{s,p}(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ is Lipschitz, $3\leq n \leq 6$, and $s$ and $p$ are such that $ W^{s,p}(Ω)\not \subset W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$. In particular, we obtain uniqueness for conductivities in $W^{1,n}(Ω)$ ($n=3,4$). This improves on the result of the author and Tataru, who assumed that the conductivity is Lipschitz.
Dissipative solutions have recently been studied as a generalized concept for weak solutions of the complete Euler system. Apparently, these are expectations of suitable measure-valued solutions. Motivated from [Feireisl, Ghoshal and Jana, Commun. Partial Differ. Equ., 2019], we impose a one-sided Lipschitz bound on velocity component as uniqueness criteria for a weak solution in Besov space $B^{α,\infty}_{p}$ with $α>1/2$. We prove that the Besov solution satisfying the above-mentioned condition is unique in the class of dissipative solutions. In the later part of this article, we prove that …
We consider the impedance tomography problem in the plane. Using Bukhgeim's scattering data for the Dirac problem, we prove that the conductivity is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neuman map
We prove uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering in the case the density of the medium has an unbounded gradient across $Σ\subseteqΓ=\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a Lipschitz boundary. This follows from a uniqueness result in inverse scattering for Schrödinger operators with singular $δ$-type potential supported on the surface $Γ$ and of strength $α\in L^{p}(Γ)$, $p>2$.
The Oleinik inequality for conservation laws and Aronson-Benilan type inequalities for porous medium or p-Laplacian equations are one-sided inequalities that provide the fundamental features of the solution such as the uniqueness and sharp regularity. In this paper such one-sided inequalities are unified and generalized for a wide class of first and second order equations in the form of $$ u_t=σ(t,u,u_x,u_{xx}),\quad u(x,0)=u^0(x)\ge0,\quad t>0,\,x\in\bfR, $$ where the non-strict parabolicity ${\partial\over\partial q} σ(t,z,p,q)\ge0$ is assumed. The generalization or unification of one-sided …
An inverse problem of finding an obstacle and the boundary condition on its surface from the fixed-energy scattering data is studied. A new method is developed for a proof of the uniqueness results. The method does not use the discreteness of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian in a bounded domain. Proof of the uniqueness results is based on the fact that the Hilbert space of square integrable functions is separable.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain existence and uniqueness results in weighted Sobolev spaces for transmission problems for the non-linear Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman system and the linear Stokes system in two complementary Lipschitz domains in ${\mathbb R}^3$, one of them is a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ with connected boundary, and another one is the exterior Lipschitz domain ${\mathbb R}^3\setminus \overline{Ω}$. We exploit a layer potential method for the Stokes and Brinkman systems combined with a fixed point theorem in order to show the desired existence and uniqueness results, when…
We discuss the Lagrangian-Eulerian framework for hydrodynamic models and provide a proof of Lipschitz dependence of solutions on initial data in path space. The paper presents a corrected version of the result in \cite{c1}.
An overdetermination is introduced in an initial condition for the second order mean field games system (MFGS). This makes the resulting problem close to the classical ill-posed Cauchy problems for PDEs. Indeed, in such a problem and overdetermination in boundary conditions usually takes place. A Lipschitz stability estimate is obtained. This estimate implies uniqueness. A new Carleman estimate is derived. The second estimate the author calls "quasi-Carleman estimate", since it contains two test functions rather than a single one in conventional Carleman estimates. These two estimates play the…
In this paper we provide a complete analogy between the Cauchy-Lipschitz and the DiPerna-Lions theories for ODE's, by developing a local version of the DiPerna-Lions theory. More precisely, we prove existence and uniqueness of a maximal regular flow for the DiPerna-Lions theory using only local regularity and summability assumptions on the vector field, in analogy with the classical theory, which uses only local regularity assumptions. We also study the behaviour of the ODE trajectories before the maximal existence time. Unlike the Cauchy-Lipschitz theory, this behaviour crucially depends on t…
We consider the Benjamin-Ono equation on the real line for initial data in weighted Sobolev spaces. After the application of the gauge transform, the flow is shown to be Lipschitz continuous and to present a nonlinear smoothing effect. As a consequence, unconditional uniqueness for the Benjamin-Ono equation is proved.
In this note we prove that McShane and Whitney's Lipschitz extensions are viscosity solutions of Jensen's auxiliary equations, known to have a key role in Jensen's celebrated proof of uniqueness of infinity harmonic functions, and therefore of Absolutely Minimizing Lipschitz Extensions. To the best of the author's knowledge, this result does not appear to be known in the literature in spite of the vast amount of work around the topic.
We prove the backward uniqueness for general parabolic operators of second order in the whole space under assumptions that the leading coefficients of the operator are Lipschitz and their gradients satisfy certain decay conditions. This result extends in some ways a classical result of Lions and Malgrange [12] and a recent result of the authors [10].
We use the method of layer potentials to study the $R_2$ Regularity problem and the $D_2$ Dirichlet problem for second order elliptic equations of the form $\mathcal{L}u=0$, with lower order coefficients, in bounded Lipschitz domains. For $R_2$ we establish existence and uniqueness assuming that $\mathcal{L}$ is of the form $\mathcal{L}u=-\text{div}(A\nabla u+bu)+c\nabla u+du$, where the matrix $A$ is uniformly elliptic and Hölder continuous, $b$ is Hölder continuous, and $c,d$ belong to Lebesgue classes and they satisfy either the condition $d\geq\text{div}b$, or $d\geq\text{div}c$ in the sen…
For a Lipschitz domain we show that solutions of certain first order systems are unique. This result is then applied to prove a crucial step for showing Korn's first inequality as well as to prove the 'infinitesimal rigid displacement lemma in curvilinear coordinates'.
In this paper we study viscosity solutions of semilinear parabolic equations in the Heisenberg group. We show uniqueness of viscosity solutions with exponential growth at space infinity. We also study Lipschitz and horizontal convexity preserving properties under appropriate assumptions. Counterexamples show that in general such properties that are well-known for semilinear and fully nonlinear parabolic equations in the Euclidean spaces do not hold in the Heisenberg group.
In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a diffusion and absorption coefficients in steady-state optical tomography problem from the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. We first prove a Global uniqueness and Lipschitz stability estimate for the absorption parameter provided that the diffusion is known. Then, we prove a Lipschitz stability result for simultaneous recovery of diffusion and absorption. In both cases the parameters belong to a known finite subspace with a priori known bounds. The proofs relies on a monotonicity result combined with the techniques of localized potentials.…
Consider a bounded open set $U$ in $R^n$ and a Lipschitz function g from the boundary of $U$ to $R^m$. Does this function always have a canonical optimal Lipschitz extension to all of $U$? We propose a notion of optimal Lipschitz extension and address existence and uniqueness in some special cases. In the case $n=m=2$, we show that smooth solutions have two phases: in one they are conformal and in the other they are variants of infinity harmonic functions called infinity harmonic fans. We also prove existence and uniqueness for the extension problem on finite graphs.
We consider the semi linear Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piscounov equation for the advance of an advantageous gene in biology. Its non-smooth reaction function $f(u)$ allows for the introduction of travelling waves with a new profile. We study existence, uniqueness, and long-time asymptotic behavior of the solutions $u(x,t)$, $(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}_+$. We prove also the existence and uniqueness (up to a spatial shift) of a travelling wave $U$. Our main result is the uniform convergence (for $x\in \mathbb{R}$) of every solution $u(x,t)$ of the Cauchy problem to a single traveling…
We consider the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for second-order linear elliptic equations: \[ -\triangle u +\mathrm{div}(u\mathbf{b}) =f \quad\text{ and }\quad -\triangle v -\mathbf{b} \cdot \nabla v =g \] in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ $(n\geq 3)$, where $\mathbf{b}:Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ is a given vector field. Under the assumption that $\mathbf{b} \in L^{n}(Ω)^n$, we first establish existence and uniqueness of solutions in $L_α^{p}(Ω)$ for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems. Here $L_α^{p}(Ω)$ denotes the Sobolev space (or Bessel potential space) with the pair $(α,p…
Segregated direct boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) based on a parametrix and associated with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems for the linear stationary diffusion partial differential equation with a variable non-smooth (or limited-smoothness) coefficient on Lipschitz domains are formulated. The PDE right hand sides belong to the Sobolev (Bessel-potential) space $H^{s-2}(Ω)$ or $\widetilde H^{s-2}(Ω)$, $1/2<s<3/2$, when neither strong classical nor weak canonical co-normal derivatives are well defined. Equivalence of the BDIEs to the original BVP, BDIE solvability, so…
The dissipative solutions can be seen as a convenient generalization of the concept of weak solution to the isentropic Euler system. They can be seen as expectations of the Young measures associated to a suitable measure--valued solution of the problem. We show that dissipative solutions coincide with weak solutions starting from the same initial data on condition that: {\bf (i)} the weak solution enjoys certain Besov regularity; {\bf (ii)} the symmetric velocity gradient of the weak solution satisfies a one--sided Lipschitz bound.
The goal of the present paper is to study the weak--strong uniqueness problem for the compressible Navier--Stokes system with a general barotropic pressure law. Our results include the case of a hard sphere pressure of Van der Waals type with a non--monotone perturbation and a Lipschitz perturbation of a monotone pressure. Although the main tool is the relative energy inequality, the results are conditioned by the presence of viscosity and do not seem extendable to the Euler system.
The purpose of this paper is to study boundary value problems of transmission type for the Navier-Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman systems in two complementary Lipschitz domains on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension 2 or 3. We exploit a layer potential method combined with a fixed point theorem in order to show existence and uniqueness results when the given data are suitably small in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of determining the spatially dependent source in a time fractional diffusion-wave equation, with the aid of extra measurement data at subboundary. Uniqueness result is obtained by using the analyticity and the new established unique continuation principle provided that the coefficients are all temporally independent. We also derive a Lipschitz stability of our inverse source problem under a suitable topology whose norm is given via the adjoint system of the fractional diffusion-wave equation.
In this paper we are concerned with the steady Navier-Stokes and Stokes problems with mixed boundary conditions involving Tresca slip, leak condition, one-sided leak conditions, velocity, pressure, rotation, stress and normal derivative of velocity together. Relying on the relations among strain, rotation, normal derivative of velocity and shape of boundary surface, we have variational formulations for the problems, which consist of five formulae with five unknowns. We get the variational inequalities equivalent to the formulated variational problems, which have one unknown. Then, we study the…

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), i.e., a set which satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Assume that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition. Let $L_0u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators, and write $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ for the associated elliptic measures. The goal of this program is to find sufficient c…
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of solutions for several classes of stochastic evolution equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients, that is, backward stochastic evolution equations, stochastic Volterra type evolution equations and stochastic functional evolution equations. In particular, the results can be used to treat a large class of quasi-linear stochastic equations, which includes the reaction diffusion and porous medium equations.
In this article, we prove uniqueness and energy balance for isentropic Euler system driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. Pathwise uniqueness result is obtained for weak solutions having Hölder regularity $C^α,α>1/2$ in space and satisfying one-sided Lipschitz bound on velocity. We prove Onsager's conjecture for isentropic Euler system with stochastic forcing, that is, energy balance equation for solutions enjoying Hölder regularity $C^α,α>1/3$. Both the results have been obtained in a more general setting by considering regularity in Besov space.
Nonnegative measure-valued solutions of the continuity equation are uniquely determined by their initial condition, if the characteristic ODE associated to the velocity field has a unique solution. In this paper we give a partial extension of this result to signed measure-valued solutions, under a quantitative two-sided Osgood condition on the velocity field. Our results extend those obtained for log-Lipschitz vector fields by Bahouri and Chemin.
This paper presents an inverse problem for the nonlinear 1-d Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (K-S) equation. More precisely, we study the nonlinear inverse problem of retrieving the anti-diffusion coefficient from the measurements of the solution on a part of the boundary and at some positive time everywhere. Uniqueness and Lipschitz stability for this inverse problem are proven with the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method. The proof is based on a global Carleman estimate for the linearized K-S equation.
