We are concerned with the problem of determining the damping boundary coefficient appearing in a dissipative wave equation from a single boundary measurement. We prove that the uniqueness holds at the origin provided that the initial condition is appropriately chosen. We show that the choice of the initial condition leading to uniqueness is related to a fine version of unique continuation property for elliptic operators. We also establish a Lipschitz directional stability estimate at the origin, which is obtained by a linearization process.
We establish the concept of $α$-dissipative solutions for the two-component Hunter-Saxton system under the assumption that either $α(x)=1$ or $0\leq α(x)<1$ for all $x\in \mathbb{R}$. Furthermore, we investigate the Lipschitz stability of solutions with respect to time by introducing a suitable parametrized family of metrics in Lagrangian coordinates. This is necessary due to the fact that the solution space is not invariant with respect to time.
We prove a Lipschitz extension lemma in which the extension procedure simultaneously preserves the Lipschitz continuity for two non-equivalent distances. The two distances under consideration are the Euclidean distance and, roughly speaking, the geodesic distance along integral curves of a (possibly multi-valued) flow of a continuous vector field. The Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the extension can be estimated in terms of the Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the original function. This Lipschitz extension lemma allows us to remove the high integrability assump…
In this paper, we study various dissipative mechanics associated with the Boussinesq systems which model two-dimensional small amplitude long wavelength water waves. We will show that the decay rate for the damped one-directional model equations, such as the KdV and BBM equations, holds for some of the damped Boussinesq systems which model two-directional waves.
Dissipative solutions have recently been studied as a generalized concept for weak solutions of the complete Euler system. Apparently, these are expectations of suitable measure-valued solutions. Motivated from [Feireisl, Ghoshal and Jana, Commun. Partial Differ. Equ., 2019], we impose a one-sided Lipschitz bound on velocity component as uniqueness criteria for a weak solution in Besov space $B^{α,\infty}_{p}$ with $α>1/2$. We prove that the Besov solution satisfying the above-mentioned condition is unique in the class of dissipative solutions. In the later part of this article, we prove that …
We study the Lipschitz stability in time for $α$-dissipative solutions to the Hunter-Saxton equation, where $α\in [0,1]$ is a constant. We define metrics in both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates, and establish Lipschitz stability for those metrics.
The dissipative solutions can be seen as a convenient generalization of the concept of weak solution to the isentropic Euler system. They can be seen as expectations of the Young measures associated to a suitable measure--valued solution of the problem. We show that dissipative solutions coincide with weak solutions starting from the same initial data on condition that: {\bf (i)} the weak solution enjoys certain Besov regularity; {\bf (ii)} the symmetric velocity gradient of the weak solution satisfies a one--sided Lipschitz bound.
We consider the critical dissipative SQG equation in bounded domains, with the square root of the Dirichlet Laplacian dissipation. We prove global a priori interior $C^α$ and Lipschitz bounds for large data.
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a monotone nonlinear drift term and multiplicative noise, considerably extending corresponding results obtained in previous work of ours. In particular, we assume the initial datum to be only measurable and we allow the diffusion coefficient to be locally Lipschitz-continuous. Moreover, we show, in a quantitative fashion, how the finiteness of the $p$-th moment of solutions depends on the integrability of the initial datum, in the whole range $p \in ]0,\infty[$. Lipschitz continuity of t…
We discuss various issues related to the finite-dimensionality of the asymptotic dynamics of solutions of parabolic equations. In particular, we study the regularity of the vector field on the global attractor associated with these equations. We show that certain dissipative partial differential equations possess a linear term that is log-Lipschitz continuous on the attractor. We then prove that this property implies that the associated global attractor $\mathcal A$ lies within a small neighbourhood of a smooth manifold, given as a Lipschitz graph over a finite number of Fourier modes. Consequ…
So far existence of dissipative weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. weak solutions satisfying the relative energy inequality) is known only in the case of boundary conditions with non zero inflow/outflow (i.e., in particular, when the normal component of the velocity on the boundary of the ow domain is equal to zero). Most of physical applications (as ows in wind tunnels, pipes, reactors of jet engines) requires to consider non-zero inflow-outflow boundary condtions. We prove existence of dissipative weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in ba…
We investigate the equation $(u_t + (f(u))_x)_x = f''(u) (u_x)^2/2$ where $f(u)$ is a given smooth function. Typically $f(u)= u^2/2$ or $u^3/3$. This equation models unidirectional and weakly nonlinear waves for the variational wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x =0$ which models some liquid crystals with a natural sinusoidal $c$. The equation itself is also the Euler-Lagrange equation of a variational problem. Two natural classes of solutions can be associated with this equation. A conservative solution will preserve its energy in time, while a dissipative weak solution loses energy at t…
For general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws we show that dissipative weak solutions belonging to an appropriate Besov space $B^{α,\infty}_q$ and satisfying a one-sided bound condition are unique within the class of dissipative solutions. The exponent $α>1/2$ is universal independently of the nature of the nonlinearity and the Besov regularity need only be imposed in space when the system is expressed in appropriate variables. The proof utilises a commutator estimate which allows for an extension of the relative entropy method to the required regularity setting. The systems of elasticit…
We study in this paper stability estimates for the fault inverse problem. In this problem, faults are assumed to be planar open surfaces in a half space elastic medium with known Lamé coefficients. A traction free condition is imposed on the boundary of the half space. Displacement fields present jumps across faults, called slips, while traction derivatives are continuous. It was proved in \cite{volkov2017reconstruction} that if the displacement field is known on an open set on the boundary of the half space, then the fault and the slip are uniquely determined. In this present paper, we study …
In this paper we consider the following modified quasi-geostrophic equation \partial_{t}θ+u\cdot\nablaθ+ν|D|^αθ=0, \quad u=|D|^{α-1}\mathcal{R}^{\bot}θ,\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^2 with $ν>0$ and $α\in ]0,1[\,\cup \,]1,2[$. When $α\in]0,1[$, the equation was firstly introduced by Constantin, Iyer and Wu in \cite{ref ConstanIW}. Here, by using the modulus of continuity method, we prove the global well-posedness of the system with the smooth initial data. As a byproduct, we also show that for every $α\in ]0,2[$, the Lipschitz norm of the solution has a uniform exponential bound.
We consider the class of dissipative reaction-diffusion-convection systems on the circle and obtain conditions under which the final (at large times) phase dynamics of a system can be described by an ODE with Lipschitz vector field in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. Precisely in this class, the first example of a parabolic problem of mathematical physics without the indicated property was recently constructed.
For Maxwell operators $(E,H) \to (i ε^{-1} \nabla\times H, -i μ^{-1} \nabla \times E)$ in Lipschitz domains, we describe all m-dissipative boundary conditions and apply this result to generalized impedance and Leontovich boundary conditions including the cases of singular, degenerate, and randomized impedance coefficients. To this end we construct Riesz bases in the trace spaces associated with the curl-operator and introduce a modified version of boundary triple adapted for the specifics of Maxwell equations, namely, to the mixed-order duality of the related trace spaces. This provides a tran…
We continue our study of the problem of mixing for a class of PDEs with very degenerate noise. As we established earlier, the uniqueness of stationary measure and its exponential stability in the dual-Lipschitz metric holds under the hypothesis that the unperturbed equation has exactly one globally stable equilibrium point. In this paper, we relax that condition, assuming only global controllability to a given point. It is proved that the uniqueness of a stationary measure and convergence to it are still valid, whereas the rate of convergence is not necessarily exponential. The result is appli…
We deal with the uniqueness of distributional solutions to the continuity equation with a Sobolev vector field and with the property of being a Lagrangian solution, that means transported by a flow of the associated ordinary differential equation. We work in a framework with lack of local integrability of the solution, in which the classical DiPerna-Lions theory of uniqueness and Lagrangianity of distributional solutions does not apply due to the insufficient integrability of the commutator. We introduce a general principle to prove that a solution is Lagrangian: we rely on a disintegration al…
The determining modes for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) are shown to satisfy an ordinary differential equation of the form $dv/dt=F(v)$, in the Banach space, $X$, of all bounded continuous functions of the variable $s\in\mathbb{R}$ with values in certain finite-dimensional linear space. This new evolution ODE, named {\it determining form}, induces an infinite-dimensional dynamical system in the space $X$ which is noteworthy for two reasons. One is that $F$ is globally Lipschitz from $X$ into itself. The other is that the long-term dynamics of the determining …
We introduce a new lattice growth model, which we call boundary sandpile. The model amounts to potential-theoretic redistribution of a given initial mass on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\geq 2$) onto the boundary of an (a priori) unknown domain. The latter evolves through sandpile dynamics, and has the property that the mass on the boundary is forced to stay below a prescribed threshold. Since finding the domain is part of the problem, the redistribution process is a discrete model of a free boundary problem, whose continuum limit is yet to be understood. We prove general results concerning our model. Th…
