We consider the class of dissipative reaction-diffusion-convection systems on the circle and obtain conditions under which the final (at large times) phase dynamics of a system can be described by an ODE with Lipschitz vector field in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. Precisely in this class, the first example of a parabolic problem of mathematical physics without the indicated property was recently constructed.
In this paper, we show that, for scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the circle S1, the property of hyperbolicity of all equilibria and periodic orbits is generic with respect to the non-linearity . In other words, we prove that in an appropriate functional space of nonlinear terms in the equation, the set of functions, for which all equilibria and periodic orbits are hyperbolic, is a countable intersection of open dense sets. The main tools in the proof are the property of the lap number and the Sard-Smale theorem.
We study the properties of non-wandering points of the following scalar reaction-diffusion equation on the circle $S^1$, \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is independent of $t$ or $T$-periodic in $t$. Assume that the equation admits a compact global attractor. It is proved that, any non-wandering point is a limit point of the system (that is, it is a point in some $ω$-limit set). More precisely, in the autonomous case, it is proved that any non-wandering point is either a fixed point or generates a rotating wave …
We study topological structure of the $ω$-limit sets of the skew-product semiflow generated by the following scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f(t,u,u_x)$ is $C^2$-admissible with time-recurrent structure including almost-periodicity and almost-automorphy. Contrary to the time-periodic cases (for which any $ω$-limit set can be imbedded into a periodically forced circle flow), it is shown that one cannot expect that any $ω$-limit set can be imbedded into an almost-periodically force…
In this paper, we show that, for scalar reaction-diffusion equations $u_t=u_{xx}+f(x,u,u_x)$ on the circle $S^1$, the Morse-Smale property is generic with respect to the non-linearity $f$. In \cite{CR}, Czaja and Rocha have proved that any connecting orbit, which connects two hyperbolic periodic orbits, is transverse and that there does not exist any homoclinic orbit, connecting a hyperbolic periodic orbit to itself. In \cite{JR}, we have shown that, generically with respect to the non-linearity $f$, all the equilibria and periodic orbits are hyperbolic. Here we complete these results by showi…
We consider the skew-product semiflow which is generated by a scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is uniformly almost periodic in $t$. The structure of the minimal set $M$ is thoroughly investigated under the assumption that the center space $V^c(M)$ associated with $M$ is no more than $2$-dimensional. Such situation naturally occurs while, for instance, $M$ is hyperbolic or uniquely ergodic. It is shown in this paper that $M$ is a $1$-cover of the hull $H(f)$ provided that $M$ is…
We are considering the asimptotic behavior as $t\to\infty$ of solutions of the Cauchy problem for parabolic second order equations with time periodic coefficients. The problem is reduced to considering degenerate time-homogeneous diffusion processes on the product of a unit circle and Euclidean space.
In this work we determine the second-order coefficient in a parabolic equation from the knowledge of a single final data. Under assumptions on the concentration of eigenvalues of the associated elliptic operator, and the initial state, we show the uniqueness of solution, and we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate for the inversion when the final time is large enough. The Lipschitz stability constant grows exponentially with respect to the final time, which makes the inversion ill-posed. The proof of the stability estimate is based on a spectral decomposition of the solution to the parabolic …
We prove logarithmic conditional stability up to the final time for backward-parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz continuous in $t$ and Lipschitz continuous in $x$. The result complements previous achievements of Del Santo and Prizzi (2009) and Del Santo, Jaeh and Prizzi (2015), concerning conditional stability (of a type intermediate between Hoelder and logarithmic), arbitrarily closed, but not up to the final time.
We analyze the pattern forming ability and pattern stability for a one-dimensional non-linear transport-diffusion equation on the circle. We show that the trivial steady state is stable when diffusion is sufficiently strong. In the limit for vanishing diffusion, linear combinations of delta peaks can be stationary solutions; we study their stability properties. Finally, we present numerical examples exhibiting a variety of behaviors.
We prove that a large class of parabolic final value problems is well posed. This results via explicit Hilbert spaces that characterise the data yielding existence, uniqueness and stability of solutions. This data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator, which represents a new compatibility condition pertinent for final value problems. The framework is evolution equations for Lax--Milgram operators in vector distribution spaces. The final value heat equation on a smooth open set is also covered, and for non-zero Dirichlet data a non-trivial extension of the compatibility condi…
This paper focuses on parabolic final value problems, and well-posedness is proved for a large class of these. The clarification is obtained from Hilbert spaces that characterise data that give existence, uniqueness and stability of the solutions. The data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator that maps final states to the corresponding initial states. It induces a new compatibility condition, depending crucially on the fact that analytic semigroups always are invertible in the class of closed operators. Lax--Milgram operators in vector distribution spaces constitute the ma…
We consider a parabolic equation in a bounded domain $\OOO$ over a time interval $(0,T)$ with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We arbitrarily choose a subboundary $Γ\subset \ppp\OOO$. Then, we discuss an inverse problem of determining a zeroth-order spatially varying coefficient by extra data of solution $u$: $u\vert_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ and $u(\cdot,t_0)$ in $\OOO$ with $t_0=0$ or $t=T$. First we establish a conditional Lipschitz stability estimate as well as the uniqueness for the case $t_0=T.$ Second, under additional condition for $Γ$, we prove the uniqueness for the case $t_0=0$. T…
This paper is concerned with the inverse moving source problems for parabolic equations. Given the temporal function, we prove the uniqueness of the nonlinear inverse problem of determining the orbit function by final data measured in a bounded domain. On the other hand, given the orbit function we also show that the profile function can be uniquely determined by final data measured in a bounded domain away from the domain enclosing the moving orbit. The proofs adopt the Fourier approach and results from complex analysis.
This article concerns the basic understanding of parabolic final value problems, and a large class of such problems is proved to be well posed. The clarification is obtained via explicit Hilbert spaces that characterise the possible data, giving existence, uniqueness and stability of the corresponding solutions. The data space is given as the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator occurring naturally in the theory. It induces a new compatibility condition, which relies on the fact, shown here, that analytic semigroups always are invertible in the class of closed operators. The general se…
In this paper, we establish blow-up rates for higher-order semilinear parabolic equations with nonlocal in time nonlinearity with no positive assumption on the solution. We also give Liouville-type theorem for higher-order semilinear parabolic equation with infinite memory nonlinear term which plays the main tools to prove our blow-up rate result. Finally, we study the well-posedness of mild solutions.
Regimes with a singular peaking for a wide class of quasilinear second order parabolic equations are studied. On the basis of energy methods, precise estimates of a final profile of a weak solution in a neighborhood of the peaking time are established depending on the rate of increase of a global energy of this solution. Key words: quasilinear parabolic equations, peaking regimes, energy solutions.
We establish a local boundedness estimate for weak subsolutions to a doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equation. Our argument relies on energy estimates and a parabolic nonlocal version of De Giorgi's method. Furthermore, by means of a new algebraic inequality, we show that positive weak supersolutions satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality. Finally, we also prove a logarithmic decay estimate for positive supersolutions.
In this paper we consider models for short-term, mean-term and long-term morphodynamics of dunes and megariples. We give an existence and uniqueness result for long term dynamics of dunes. This result is based on a time-space periodic solution existence result for degenerated parabolic equation that we set out. Finally the mean-term and long-term models are homogenized.
Aim of this paper is to extend the continuous dependence estimates proved in \cite{JK1} to quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order parabolic equations. As by-product of these estimates, we get an Hölder estimate for bounded solutions of systems and a rate of convergence estimate for the vanishing viscosity approximation. In the second part of the paper we employ similar techniques to study the periodic homogenization of quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order uniformly parabolic equations. Finally, some examples are discussed.
In this paper we build models for short-term, mean-term and long-term dynamics of dune and megariple morphodynamics. They are models that are degenerated parabolic equations which are, moreover, singularly perturbed. We, then give an existence and uniqueness result for the short-term and mean-term models. This result is based on a time-space periodic solution existence result for degenerated parabolic equation that we set out. Finally the short-term model is homogenized.
In the class of the so called non-dynamic Fractional Obstacle Problems of parabolic type, it is shown how to obtain higher regularity as well as optimal regularity of the space derivatives of the solution. Furthermore, at free boundary points of positive parabolic density, it is proven that the time derivative of the solution is Hölder continuous. Finally, at regular free boundary points, space-time regularity of the corresponding free boundary is obtained for any fraction $s\in(0,1)$.
We investigate the link between inverse problems and final state observability for a general class of parabolic systems. We generalize a stability result for initial data due to García and Takahashi [16], known for the case of self-adjoint dissipative operators. More precisely, we consider a system governed by an analytic semigroup. Under the assumption of final state observability, we prove a logarithmic stability estimate depending on the analyticity angle of the semigroup. This is done by using a general logarithmic convexity result. The abstract result is illustrated by considering the Orn…
We study the local in time existence of a regular solution of a nonlinear parabolic backward-forward system arising from the theory of Mean-Field Games (briefly MFG). The proof is based on a contraction argument in a suitable space that takes account of the peculiar structure of the system, which involves also a coupling at the final horizon. We apply the result to obtain existence to very general MFG models, including also congestion problems.
In this article, we consider a semilinear pseudo parabolic heat equation with the nonlinearity which is the product of logarithmic and polynomial functions. Here we prove the global existence of solution to the problem for arbitrary dimension $n \geq 1$ and power index $p>1$. Asymptotic behaviour of the solution has been addressed at different energy levels. Moreover, we prove that the global solution indeed decays with an exponential rate. Finally, sufficient conditions are provided under which blow up of solutions take place.
A nonlinear fourth-order parabolic equation in one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions is studied. This equation arises in the context of fluctuations of a stationary nonequilibrium interface and in the modeling of quantum semiconductor devices. The existence of global-in-time non-negative weak solutions is shown. A criterion for the uniqueness of non-negative weak solutions is given. Finally, it is proved that the solution converges exponentially fast to its mean value in the ``entropy norm'' using a new optimal logarithmic Sobolev inequality for higher derivatives.
We investigate the issue of uniqueness of the limit flow for a relevant class of quasi-linear parabolic equations defined on the whole space. More precisely, we shall investigate conditions which guarantee that the global solutions decay at infinity uniformly in time and their entire trajectory approaches a single steady state as time goes to infinity. Finally, we obtain a characterization of solutions which blow-up, vanish or converge to a stationary state for initial data of the form $λφ_0$ while $λ>0$ crosses a bifurcation value $λ_0$.
We give a new stability estimate for the problem of determining the time-dependent zero order coefficient in a parabolic equation from a partial parabolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The novelty of our result is that, contrary to the previous works, we do not need any measurement on the final time. We also show how this result can be used to establish a stability estimate for the problem of determining the nonlinear term in a semilinear parabolic equation from the corresponding "linearized" Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key ingredient in our analysis is a parabolic version of an elliptic Carlema…
We study the Cauchy problem for fully nonlinear (stochastic) parabolic partial differential equations. We provide both in deterministic and stochastic case the existence of a maximal defined solution for the problem and we provide suitable blow-up criterion. The key idea is the use of the paradifferential operator calculus in order to reduce the fully nonlinear problem into an abstract quasilinear (stochastic) parabolic equation. This allows us to use some recent results on abstract quasilinear (stochastic) evolution equations in Banach spaces. To do so, we analyse the properties of the paradi…
We study two identification problems in relation with a strongly degenerate parabolic diffusion equation characterized by a vanishing diffusion coefficient $u\in W^{1,\infty},$ with the property $\frac{1}{u}\notin L^{1}. $ The aim is to identify $u$ from certain observations on the solution, by a technique of nonlinear optimal control with control in coefficients. The existence of a controller $u$ which is searched in $% W^{1,\infty}$ and the determination of the optimality conditions are given for homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. An approximating problem further introduced allows a …
In this paper we investigate maximal $L^q$-regularity for time-dependent viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with unbounded right-hand side and superlinear growth in the gradient. Our approach is based on the interplay between new integral and Hölder estimates, interpolation inequalities, and parabolic regularity for linear equations. These estimates are obtained via a duality method à la Evans. This sheds new light on a parabolic counterpart of a conjecture by P.-L. Lions on maximal regularity for Hamilton-Jacobi equations, recently addressed in the stationary framework by the authors. Finally,…
The aim of this work is to show an abstract framework to analyze a family of linear degenerate parabolic mixed equations. We combine the theory for the degenerate parabolic equations with the classical Babuska-Brezzi theory for linear mixed stationary equations to deduce sufficient conditions to prove the well-posedness of the problem. Finally, we illustrate the application of the abstract framework through examples that come from physical science applications including fluid dynamics models and electromagnetic problems.
The main purpose of this paper is to study the problem of determining initial condition of nonlinear parabolic equation from noisy observations of the final condition. We introduce a regularized method to establish an approximate solution. We prove an upper bound on the rate of convergence of the mean integrated squared error.
This paper is concerned with approximation of blow-up phenomena in nonlinear parabolic problems. We consider the equation u_t = u_xx +|u|^p -b(x)|u_x|^q in a bounded domain, we study the behavior of the semidiscrete problem. Under some assumptions we show existence and unicity of the semidiscrete solution, we show that it blows up in a finite time and we prove the convergence of the semidiscrete problem. Finally, we give an approximation of the blow up rate and the blow up time of the semidiscrete solution
